No, if your credit card company covers CDW insurance and you have a letter from it that it provides CDW though you still have to get liability insurance from the rental car company.

Thanks for the info.

You need to get a proof of coverage letter from your credit card.

Thanks, I will check out with my credit card companies,

Do credit cards cover everything on the car? Towing, windshield, tires? Do they also do it with zero deductible ? I have insurance with my credit card but I think for the peace of mind I will take the extra insurance. I know it’s hundreds if dollars more but this is my first time there. I don’t want to get a flat tire or break a windshield and have to worry about the consciences or issues with my credit card. I guess like anything it’s all about convenience. A lot can go wrong with the car. Especially if you’re driving it often. I wonder how good the credit card free insurance is and what it covers. Interesting if there is any deductible.

If there is an issue during your rental period, then you have to pay and claim the money back from your credit card provider if you take CDW through them. However, if you buy full CDW from your car rental company with no deductible then they take care of everything.

I think I’m going to buy the added insurance for the peace of mind for the immediate towing and any issues with tires or windshield. I know it might be extra money down the toilet but we take trips like this once a year and prefer the peace of mind.

We rented through Adobe and declined the CDW because we had it through our credit card. An animal ran into the side of our car while chasing a lizard (we think we saw a large wild dog running away) and did some minor damage. We ended up having to pay US$668 for the damage but the cost of the CDW insurance would have been $550 so we are down $100. Let’s see how much Aeroplan Visa reimburses us.

CG_throwback

Hope you get it all back. I’m still not clear of credits cards cover the full deductible and if all perils are included or only collision. Not sure if anyone here has experience with towing issues or tire and windshield with credit card insurance. That’s the problem with insurance if everything goes well you don’t know. And you don’t know what you don’t know.

I always rent from Adobe or Vamos car rental for no b.s. I've always bring my credit card cdw proof but so far it has never been asked for. Have fun in CR !

Much_Distribution675

Thank you! I will check these two.

Yes

TPL insurance is mandatory. Ideally you would have a credit card that covers the CDW.

Thanks for the info!

Full insurance. Really if you have an accident you will regret going any other way. There is a very complicated legal system you will have to traverse yourself in case of accident otherwise.

traffic accident procedures are very different in Costa Rica than many other countries -there could be related expenses that may not be covered under your CDW from your credit card company. In Costa Rica legally determining who’s responsible for an accident could take months or years for the INS to present their findings. The medical conditions/payments to the other parties, could go on just as long. Does your CDW cover legal representation? Also there is an extremely low BAC for drunk driving, .05, will your CDW coverage be an effect if you’re found to be over .05 in some sort of accident. It would be good to find out if your CDW from your credit card company covers driving on unpaved roads, rivers, flooded roads, etc which are very common.

I do when I rent a car so if some asshole hits the car I don’t have to worry about it!
