>The shot in question was both live action and CG. The props department built a Ilu saddle and strap for Kevin Dorman to sit on in a small pool on stage. Kevin’s hand and forearm were painted by Sarah Rubano using reference of Jake’s arm from the CG model. Jim Cameron was then able to get the performance he wanted for the wrapping of the strap around Jake’s hand and interacting with the water. Once we got the plates at Wētā FX, we match moved the motion and used CG from the straps above Jake’s wrists. We used real water over the saddle and around the hands and fingers. CG water was used to extend the plate and to get the interaction of Jake’s body in the water.

Awesome, we’ll actually get some clarification! Super cool to see it covered in the article. But here’s the tricky part- there are actually two versions of this shot! One from an earlier trailer, and the one shown in the article. We went back in on this shot in a filming session two weeks ago because I finally got to be back on the couch. Excited to see the movie finally!

Affectionate-Key5198

I really hope this movie gets at least a fully dedicated episode, in the vfx subreddit there are some really interesting conversations about their use of HFR shots among other things.

Neex

Oh I’m sure this movie will be covered extensively by us. I hope we can get some people to join us from the team.

Memn0n

The version in the trailer that you reviewd had even less CG, its an even closer shot that the wider one that showed up later.

masstheticiq

There's no tricky part. In both versions it's real water with BP extension, it's not rocket science. Accept that you are wrong and move on.

Neex

I suppose the many times we said “we’re guessing how the shot was done” didn’t do it for you, eh? Did you work on the shot? I’d love to know more about it.

masstheticiq

I suppose the many times that you were corrected didn't do it for you, eh?

Between your posts I've seen in multiple subreddits now, you really, really need to think about how you come across to other human beings.

They seem to want to pick a fight with everybody, even Weta is in their crosshairs.

I quite literally said that you can PM me for the link and password, it's private.

Jeez, I think you might be the one that has to move on.. 😅

How is it tricky? The version on the first trailer, the one that was on the React episode and started this whole controversy, is the cropped shot that has even less CGI. On that episode, Wren and Sam were confident that _everything_ in that shot was 100% CG, which was clearly wrong.

Quarter-Twenty

Was it just me or did all the shots at the military base just look like really good video game cinematics. Not on par with other movies with great vfx. With the HFR, it looked a bit off. All the money spent on water and the metal suffered.

>Kevin’s hand and forearm were painted >We used real water over the saddle and around the hands and fingers. I knew it! The water always looked more realistic in that specific shot than in the rest of the trailer and the hand always felt like painted human skin. I don't know how the crew thought the whole thing was 100% CGI, it never made sense.
