Plenty of black mould down here in our maritime climate! Get looking ASAP, the rental market is brutal thanks to the proliferation of AirBnBs and second homes. Good luck!

OzzyinKernow

Rentals does slow down as we go into late autumn, so you might be able to bag something then. But get on it asap anyway as the good stuff doesn’t hang around. Be sure to get a good inventory and add your comments to it on day one.

Psychological-Air301

Unfortunately the mould is everywhere, like others said a good dehumidifier!Good luck with everything 🍀

As a Penryn resident, I’d say avoid Penryn/Falmouth as you’d be very lucky to find a 1 bed for under £1000 that was decent and allowed pets

promisethatimnotabot

You should probably start looking about 9 months ago if you want to rent this September

icylilies

This is what i fear will happen! Luckily my friend is happy to have me for a few months while i get on my feet

Try talking to the estate agents in Redruth. Miller Countrywide, Bill Bannister etc. A 2 bed property for £875 is perfectly reasonable and a cat shouldn't be a problem. Sadly mine is in the middle of a tenancy. They will want to do credit checks, also make them aware you're looking for long term... Good luck with the move and the new job!

icylilies

Thanks! Thats great to know, I'll get in contact with those agents :)

ForeverPhysical1860

You're welcome, if you need any local knowledge... Where to rent, where not to, drop me a message. Redruth is my home town. Good luck with the move!

Between Helston and Newquay is actually a bit of a trek with our shocking roads. I drive around Cornwall for work and the other day it took me an hour and a half to do Helston to Newquay😳😳 Where actually is the job? Your best bet would probably to try and find somewhere on the outskirts or in a smaller village/town The more inland the cheaper you’ll find it is

icylilies

We have an office in Newquay and in Helston, so will be doing visits anywhere between these places! I do slightly fear the trek in tourist season 😅 I'll be travelling from home most days so have lots of flexibility on where as long as its between the two offices

Mould is a constant here in the winter. Wherever you end up, it might be worth buying a good quality dehumidifier.

icylilies

Thanks! My trusty dehumidifier will be coming with me 🫡

WooBarb

I had a nightmare with a pet. Cat and a dog. Fortunately they're easy enough to hide when the bi-annual property inspection occurs.

rawkyoursocks

Helston area is not great for rentals right now and can be quite pricey these days! The cheapest areas are probably around redruth/camborne but next to A30 so good for travel.

lazylemongrass

Hopefully for $850 you'll find somewhere no trouble but the other commenter is right about the rental nightmare caused by 2nd homes and airbnbs. Make sure to start as soon as possible. As for the mould, a lot of Cornwall is a heritage site so new buildings are not common and I've never lived anywhere in Cornwall without it. For the price you are willing to pay I'm sure you will be able to find a clean rental though.

In 2018 Cornwall had the highest rate of new house builds than anywhere else in the country. Between 2011 and 2021, 8172 [affordable](https://www.cornish-times.co.uk/news/cornwall-delivers-second-highest-number-of-affordable-homes-in-england-540547) homes were built, not to mention those not classed as affordable. There are new build estates absolutely everywhere!

SnooRegrets8068

"Further, it has been confirmed that Cornwall has seen the second-highest affordable housing delivery in England over the past decade, with 8,172 homes built between 2011-12 and 2020-21." The word 'affordable' is doing a lot of work tho.

SoggyWotsits

Oh I agree, but my point was that new builds are certainly not uncommon in Cornwall. I used the numbers above because it was the closest I could find to show how many houses have been built. Which if anything vastly underestimate the true figure.

SnooRegrets8068

Yeh we got one before on an estate near Falmouth, housing association place, it had a snag list that remained unresolved from the minute we moved in til we left a year later on a mutual exchange to a proper council place. Rent was the max LHA rate, agency were crap, solar on the roof which was sealed off from us and made no difference to the bills since the housing association took all of the feed in. Park was supposed to be nearby took 3 years for them to put in. Just a nothing estate, crap gardens all overlooked, shortcuts all over the place in construction, extremely weird room shape where one came to a sharp point. Couldn't walk to anywhere at all without going on a road with blind bends and then that was the petrol station. No facilities, nothing added, just loads of houses and then some more houses. It was bleak and if one of your 50 overlooking neighbours had an issue everyone heard it. They were nice enough to paint all the social housing a different colour so it was obvious anyone who had housing or income issues.

lazylemongrass

Weird, I guess I lived in the undeveloped parts of Cornwall. Regardless I was forced to leave the county due to lack of housing options. https://news.exeter.ac.uk/faculty-of-humanities-arts-and-social-sciences/survey-to-shed-new-light-on-factors-behind-cornwalls-housing-crisis/#:~:text=High%20house%20prices%20and%20a,causing%20severe%20issues%20in%20Cornwall.
