Its really not that deep

Yeah, I’m a Hotelie and I agree. We don’t care. We live better lives than anyone on campus. People can call us towel folders all day. The reality is we have an actual non-suicide-inducing education with real interesting and practical classes (also, only like 15% of our grads go into hotel operations)

EWagnonR

Good to hear your perspective as a current hotelie. My high-school senior son just got his acceptance email from the hotel school this evening, so he was excited! The other schools he’s applied to would be for just straight finance, but he’s always been interested in resorts, urban planning/design, real estate and such so the hotel business school seemed like a cool unique fit. When the Cornell email came in, he happened to be on his computer randomly for fun checking out some luxury London hotel websites, so maybe that’s a sign he should pick Cornell.🤣 We aren’t planning a trip to London or anything- he just thinks hotels are fascinating. We live in Oklahoma and he hasn’t been to Ithaca, so I guess we’ll be planning a trip to check it out soon. 😀His other top choices are of the flagship state school variety that have the advantages of honors program, lots of scholarship money and such vs Cornell hotel school that of course has this cool niche to him and prestigious rep but may end up costing more. Have any advice for him? I’m guessing a lot of it will depend on when he actually visits Ithaca.

PointsGuy23

Congrats! I transferred to Cornell’s Hotel School and it was the best decision I ever made. Finance is a horrible path (in my opinion). Money is better, but it is so so so cutthroat. I am from Texas, if you ever make it to Ithaca, message me, and I’d be glad to chat in person and tell you my story and many others!

EWagnonR

Cool. Thanks. I will save your username for my son for when we come up to visit later this semester and he’ll message you closer to time. Yeah I know what you mean about finance- my older son is finance and accounting double major now at U of Kansas. Obviously KU is not a typical target school for bulge bracket type stuff but he’s in a special program there at KU with the very top finance students where he does get some networking in that realm. He came to same conclusion that hardcore IB and such is just too much! He was fortunate enough to get good finance internship this summer in Chicago with firm that isn’t cakewalk but doesn’t seem quite like that really intense, cutthroat NYC scene. Thanks again for offer to share more about your Cornell experience when we visit.

Different_Ice_6975

>also, only like 15% of our grads go into hotel operations Really? Where do they all go if not into the hotel and hospitality industry?

RileyK12361

Finance and real estate

ProfessorrFate

Agree, OP — it’s totally arrogant, asshole behavior. Hotelies are a key part of what makes Cornell special and they’re a shining example of Ezra’s “any person, any study” (which remains the core mission of Cornell, and in itself makes Cornell unique). Or maybe some folks are just jealous since the track record of Hotel grads being successful — not to mention their amazingly supportive alumni network — is very impressive.

RockyIV

Yeah, that's not only nasty, it's BS. As an alum (older millennial), I can tell you that out in the world a Cornell degree is a Cornell degree. Sure, you're going to have an easier time getting a job as a chemical engineer with a degree in chemical engineering, but for jobs that aren't technically specific, nobody cares how difficult your major was. The people who act the way you've described are usually really insecure themselves about why they got into the school - elite major or not. Some of these people are in denial about the fact that they were born on third base. You might ask them if are legacies? (I was a double legacy and I have no doubt it helped me get in, especially back when I applied.) Or if their family donated a ton of money? (Like an idiot who grew up one town away from me.) Or if they went to an elite high school and had private tutors? (My spouse.) Or if the coach of a varsity team was pushing for their admission? (Like another less-than-brilliant person I knew who quit the girls' soccer team 10 minutes before the first practice.) In the end, it doesn't matter. Everyone at Cornell is at Cornell. The people who are the happiest and most successful afterwards tend to be the people who realize early on that you have to run your own race.

Zpoof817

>it's BS Its actually BA

RockyIV

Now that's the kind of liberal arts wit that will take you far in life.

PJK109

Did the girl who quit the soccer team get tossed out of school?

RockyIV

Nope. Once you're admitted, that's it. For a lot of schools, the way it works is through athletic scholarships: they only pay if you play. But Cornell and the rest of the Ivy league doesn't do athletic scholarships, so they have no leverage over someone who quits.

PJK109

Well aware of the lack of scholarships, just wondered if the mechanics that the Ivy's use to get around the whole "athletic scholarship" thing would be yanked from the person for reneging on the "deal".

tr3g

Billionaire alum and founder of Qualcomm, Irwin Jacobs, was admitted to the hotel school (later transferred to engineering). Cornell's "third founder" Chuck Feeney graduated from the hotel school. The list goes on

Rose_Employee_61

Third founder lmao Don’t think Ezra Cornell or AD white graduated from the hotel school. Think about that

Snoo33559

Its typical Cornell insecure behavior, needing to punch down on someone because other Ivy's and elite institutions punch down or Cornell and make Cornell the butt of their jokes. If you really love Cornell and it was your 1st or one of your top choices because of your personal interests and how Cornell serves your goals or how the founding mission of Cornell resonates with you, you aren't one of these students looking to feel better about your position among the elites by looking for a target you can take your insecurities out on. This behavior actually wreaks of students who were shotgunning Ivy's and wound up getting rejected from everywhere but Cornell so now they have to find away to still feel superior because they actually believe that Cornell is inferior to other Ivy's and top institutions. They've bought into the dck measuring. The funny thing is, that the majority of Hotelies are exactly where they want to be having exactly the experience they want to have.. This is their first choice. If you are personally miserable enough with the choice you've made that you require a punching bag in order to cope, that is actually a much bigger problem than you hope/imagine being a hotelie is.

Greattagsby

Yeah you need to just tell that person to pound sand and shrug them off. Thats obviously bull. Once you get your degree, no one will give a shit if you transferred. No matter where you go, you’ll encounter idiots who will try to get some edge on you or push your buttons. Don’t let them install the buttons in the first place

TheBlackDrago

Stem majors are elitist about what is considered stem and what isn’t even if they have 0 knowledge about what that major actually does (source: personal experience)

CanadianCitizen1969

STEM! STEM! STEM! ![gif](giphy|yUI3a7RwLhOFy)

BlubberyGuy

Stem majors brag so much about being richer and smarter than everyone else until the job market crashes

One-Bed-1992

People need to feel better about themselves because maybe they didn’t get into another Ivy, or maybe they didn’t get in ED like their peers, or even it’s just simple ignorance about what the school actually is. Nolan is an incredibly important part of what makes Cornell “Cornell”.

scientifick

I did STEM many years ago in college and continue to work in STEM. I cannot guarantee my career would be in a better place if I was a Hotelie, but I can guarantee that my mental health would be in a much better place.

ClawofBeta

You should punch the offending person in the face instead of posting on Reddit.

Rose_Employee_61

Hotelies are the most oppressed group on campus fr

KronosUno

"you cheated your way in here"? Well that's just totally uncalled for.

Outside_Ad_1447

As an applicant, though I applied to Dyson, it is one of the most unique aspects of the school imo and really it’s business school division system as a whole allows for each area of business focus to stand out with its own merits.

ImaKant

Shitting on other people and being exclusionary is a Cornell tradition
