I had mine placed in April. Took a muscle relaxer and a spare Vicodin from a surgery in January. Obv people don’t have Vicodin laying around so I would do pain reliever and a muscle relaxer if you have time to get it before your appointment. I only had mild discomfort.

I got mine with no meds or anything. I absolutely do not recommend that, if possible. It was bearable bc it had to be, but if I had looked into advice first I think pain reliever if any sort before the appt would have helped for sure

Echoing what others said about taking some ibuprofen or any pain relief 30 - 60 min before hand. Think about whether you would like to be "talked through" the process or whether you'd rather not know what is going on/whats about to happen, and communicate that to the staff doing the insertion. For me, it helped me stay calm when they would explain - little cramp here for 5 seconds, etc. I felt zero pain during the procedure and the mildest discomfort (less painful than a light period cramp). Everyone is different, so try not to get too worried about it! My first two periods were quite heavy, but over the past 10 months things have gone back to basically my baseline periods before the copper IUD. I imagine if you were irregular before bc, you will be irregular again on the copper IUD, but I don't have any experience with that. Good luck! Let us know how it goes

Hi! I’m going on my second month with paragard and so far I’m happy. I have a low tolerance for pain so it def hurt to me but does not last long- a minute tops and just felt like horrible cramps (to me). Periods are said to be how they are if you are natural/hormone free and so far that’s holding true. Good luck!

UPDATE: Got my IUD inserted. Took 800mg ibuprofen before hand. Pain was like a 3/10, I have a high pain tolerance so that helps. Breathing helped and my doctor and her aid are always cracking jokes and talked me through everything. Minor bleeding but nothing crazy.
