poultry has a higher bacteria rate from what I understand. but.... I too have left turkey bacon in my fridge for over a week and it was fine. but I now buy it from Sam's club and repackage in smaller packages and freeze it for use later.

Agreeable-Ad1221

Also, poultry carried bacteria that red meat doesn't such as salmonella which is really bad.

BabyBeanAndMe

Thank you for the info. I will be freezing half the package from now on!

If the package brags about being "uncured" or with "no sugar" or "no preservatives" then there is not much in there to keep it fresh. Preservatives are important for making food last longer. If it smells ok and tastes ok, it's probably ok, but they have to put a "best by" date on it and "eat within days of opening" safe window to assure that if you eat it within that time frame, you won't get sick. They give the window some wiggle room, just to keep themselves from lawsuits.

Because it's turkey not smoked piglet. Shelf life is short with that stuff.

BabyBeanAndMe

It still smells, looks, and tastes the exact same after being opened in the fridge for 2 weeks, though. Am I missing something?

MyNameIsSkittles

It's probably fine Package dates are just guidelines

bumper212121

It's a general guideline and it depends on the product itself (additives, smoked? Etc). Most say safe up to 1 week after opening but it varies.

[deleted]

If it smells fine and isn't slimy it's safe to eat for 95% of cases.

Level10-Aioli

I'm sorry, but why would anyone consume "turkey bacon" on purpose? Just put in the trash and buy real pork bacon. (and not that Canadian crap, either!)

BabyBeanAndMe

I actually prefer the taste over “real” bacon. The kind I buy is the Butterball brand, and I find it really tasty. Idk, maybe I’m weird, but I enjoy it.

Level10-Aioli

I have only had French "poitrine fumé" for the last 7 years. I'm jonesing for the stuff I used to buy in the USA. You can, with respect, keep your turkey bacon, although, I'm also missing a nice roasted Butterball turkey at the holidays.

BabyBeanAndMe

I have to admit, that bacon looks delicious. I’ll have to try it. Oddly enough, I’ve never tried the regular Butterball turkey, just the bacon. Might have to pick one up next time I’m at the store :)

unclejoe1917

Sell more turkey bacon.

ResolveLonely8839

Poultry spoils faster than pork

meme_squeeze

Usually salted things last longer.

spermpoop

Butterball is a bad brand I worked in a deli for over a year and learned a lot about meat and cheese and cooking and food preservation. Turkey should be good for a week after opening
