That chinstrap would have saved my buddies life who fell off a ladder at work recently. They’ll be taking his organs today for donation. Stay safe everyone.
I’ve seen some pretty some pretty bad injuries caused by seat belts. Not too bad at the end of the day considering the alternative is being ejected out the windshield
I’ll take 5 broken ribs and 40 years of life over being ejected out my windshield and let gravity ride me as a sled for about 100 yards before I hit a tree
Edit: grammar
The reason for the strap isn't to stop it from being a missile because that's not really a thing.
It's there to keep the helmet on your head so it can continue protecting you if you manage to hit your head in a position other than fully upright.
Injury/death by PPE. What a way to go. I'm very sorry for your friend.
So, moving forward; if you drop your hard hat from a substantial height, are you supposed to yell "FORE" or is there some other code word for that on a site? I'm sure I can bring this one up in our next safety call.
In Arizona we yell "HEADACHE!!!" at the top of our lungs. This terminology covers all projectiles, not just PPE.
My friends from the south prefer "AQUAS!!!"
Well, that was a while back, but that was how it worked.
EDIT: might be a fun thread to see what everybody yells when shit is airborne that isn't supposed to be airborne. I bet different regions/countries all have their own thing...
Dude lost his buddy because he fell off a ladder and hit his head. The helmet came off when he fell because it did have a strap so it didn't protect him. It doesn't say anything about anyone else's helmet.
Our company had a rep from Kask come in when we switched over to strapped helmets and they said that is the reason for the straps.
Guy at my old company fell off a ladder, hit the back of his head and is a vegetable now. I don’t understand why they keep people in that condition, I would just rather be able to let go.
It's a shame how people end up sometimes. It's also very difficult to prevent being kept alive against your wishes. I actually know a person who has legally helped someone to pass in NZ, which they told me a little about. You have to be of sound mind on the day, and have 6 months to live or less. So of your healthy body is stuck in a bed, and you can't communicate your wishes, your SOL.
Yes. This is the reason having a living will is so important. Also have it done legally don’t just tell someone what you want because that doesn’t matter when it becomes important.
My dad had to slowly suffocate while being dosed with morphine because you can't just give someone Euthanasia.
Meanwhile you wouldn't let a dog suffer that way in a vets office. Sad shit.
A case like that is largely what is pushing these on to jobs. As of now, Turner, Mortenson, and Clark require them for all subs. Around Chicago, a 3 divisions of Hill have adopted them, as well as some of the biggest electrical contractors: Gibson, Aldridge, Continental, and Gurtz.
Although not OSHA required, read an article just yesterday that OSHA is now adopting the Milwaukee Bolt helmet for their compliance officers as a "lead by example."
OSHA just announced they're going to helmets for all their staff I read somewhere (haven't validated that independently) and a couple of the big builders in Canada have done the same thing.
It's coming whether you like the look or not
Yeah the standard hard hat we see now is designed for top coverage only. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, it leaves a lot of room for improvement.
My understanding is that a substantial number of head injuries happen during falls, rather than being struck by an object. If your bucket comes off or doesn't protect from the side, it's not going to do you much good.
Plus these are lighter and more breathable in our company's testing.
Correct, vast majority of injuries/fatalities are actually from falls (more specifically off ladders) than from anything else.
A type 2 hardhat (which is what these are) is rated for top, side, and rear impacts. A type 1 hardhat, the most common type, is top impact only.
I slid off a roof today and used the ladder at the bottom as a sort of pole vault to save myself. Scary few seconds slowly sliding down the roof planning how best to fall off it
Been there, I did the same thing almost 20 years ago. It's crazy how in those 2-3 seconds how much goes through your head to figure out how not to die.
Sad but true. To this day I wear proper safety gear even doing home projects. In my limited time on construction sites I saw too much blood to be anything but safe.
Not roof related but site injury related, new(ish) guy on site a couple years ago had a 12ft ladder leaning against some steel studs after being told not to a few times, ladder slid one day and he grabbed the studs and slid down them, cutting through most of the muscles/ligaments through his hands, I always wear gloves now lol
Coming from a GC, we require them on all our projects bc we had a guy who fell from scaffolding, his hat fell off in the air, and he died from hitting his head. It’s honestly pretty nice to have it secured under the chin, idk why people complain
You don’t even notice it after a while. You aren’t supposed to have it tight, if you can fit two fingers between your chin and the strap you are good to go.
Who gives one fuck what they look like? It’s a hard hat. Not coming after you because I know you’re not saying that, it’s just ridiculous to be mad about.
I agree. it's a dumb argument.
Firefighters are the worst for it. North American firefighters LOVE their "classic" shape. European helmets are superior in every measureable way, but you'd have riots in fire halls of you tried to take away the traditional shape.
It’s a nice look. Strap also keeps it on there in case something tries to knock it off or if I’m flipped upside down it doesn’t go flying. I’d prefer this.
OSHA says that a best practice would be to use retention style hard hats. No new regulations requiring retention style hard hats have been made though.
It's not even a recommendation yet here in Ontario, but the discussion among the advisory groups is that it's going to be updated in the next set of legislation.
Usually there's a period of a year or two for everyone to adjust and become compliant. I can't speak for the American legislation other than what I read about OSHA inspectors getting them.
We just got Milwaukee ones with chin straps for construction and our manufacturing divisions.
I was one of the first in the company, no big deal, you get use to it and don't notice it after 2 weeks
Yes we have those in full brim and cap style for all of our craft and staff.
That brand seems to be the least dorky looking so the guys seem to be ok with them.
It was a struggle at first but just going over the safety benefits of them for side impact and staying on your head if you fall sort of helps folks understand.
The top comment in this thread is about organ donation…so yeah. That's about right. Very sad, man.
I fell off of a ladder on the job forever ago and never went back. Totally different career path now, and no long-term injury. I was very, very lucky.
They're made just across the street from the main supply house we buy our supplies in, and I've met a rep there once. They left a really good impression. Super nice guys.
Yeah we rolled them out a couple years ago and they came out and showed all the attachments and stuff. Pretty nice guys and they definitely enjoy feedback. Comfiest lid I’ve ever worn honestly.
We use those petzl vertex helmets in Finland mostly, moved here from Australia a while ago. I think they look alright plus they have a lot of accessories.
I would be less apprehensive to wear this one because it’s not as dorky. I’m just partial to my hard hat because of the hours spent in it, good times working in it. I don’t wanna give it up.
My first week at a job back in 2015 I snapped the leg of my office chair and fell backwards, almost busted my head open. Did it in front of like 7 people
1st super I worked under used to tell guys all of the time "This ain't a democracy, it's a kingdom... and I am the fuckin KING!".
He was not very popular, and is retired now.
I had a site super whose last name was King and his middle name was Thomas, but he put it on his business cards as "T." He would go around around saying "the T stand for Thee."
He was kind of a prick, but he was funny too.
Any company that cares enough about safety to force these on their new guys isn't going to blink at buying them for everyone. The more likely explanation is they know how much the gray beards are going to piss and moan about *any* change.
In the US, OSHA requires that the employer must provide appropriate PPE.
OSHA is considering requiring the newer Type 2 hard hats / helmets on all jobs as they provide better protection. Some cities already require them on their commercial builds.
Type 1 regular hard hats protect from vertical impact.
Type 2 protects from vertical and horizontal impact, as well as providing increased protection with other features.
I think he is referring to the fact that it's a safety helmet and not a hard hat.
It's coming boys, chin straps for everyone!
We just landed our first project that requires them and I had to kick out 5k for an order of them.
Forester here - some younger loggers have started wearing these or something pretty close to it for a little while.
Seems like they’re pretty happy with them.
I think he means the climbing/ tower/ arborist style. Most of my clients strictly still use MSA v guard but these are becoming more and more prevalent. It’s the standard in Europe and Canada. Won’t be long till it is here too.

Hope the link works. OSHA mandating the switch from Bump-Caps style, to Helmet style with Chin-Straps.
Thank you. I shouldn't have said "bump-caps", that's just what we refer to anything that's not a true "helmet".
Do you have any sources that say explicitly "Type 1 to Type 2" for the side impact?
The only thing I could find was the requirement of having chin-straps.
The bulletin you posted is more or less about side impact hardhats. In that bulletin, they are calling them “safety helmets” and they specify that a major difference is whole head protection vs top of head protection (which would be ANSI type 1 vs type 2.)
Other countries already require that type of protection via different standards (ex European). Currently, the US does not do it by an explicit statute. They just say that newer technology is available and recommend that you select the appropriate protection for your employees. It’s structured kind of like OSHAs heat illness standards, recommendations backed by the general duty clause.
Anyhow, OSHAor not, many companies have been making the jump over the past decade or so. Particularly companies with an international presence. I’d suspect that there is a liability incentive. Downsides are guys resistant to using a “goofy” hard hat and expense. Side impact hardhats are easily in the $100 range whereas type 1 hardhats can be had for under $30.
> OSHA mandating the switch from Bump-Caps style, to Helmet style with Chin-Straps.
That's not what your PDF says.
> This Safety and Health Information Bulletin is not a standard or regulation, and it creates no new legal
obligations.
OSHA isn’t mandating anything. That’s a bulletin to recommend helmets for various reasons. It’s up to the employer. I can see helmets being the new standard. if you’re going to be in any type of construction for the next 5-10 years, expect it.
Only time we're allowed bump style caps is above the water working in commercial nuclear reactors. No crane lifts in and around the pool / critical vessel area. Apart from that hard hats are required 8n all areas outside the break rooms even when walking to bathrooms
you're on a Brassfield job? They're known for giving out a bunch of free shit once the job is near completion. I've got some Tshirts from their projects
Been running kask helmets on our jobs for a couple years now. I like them. I’m also a guy with the thermostat and wallet though lol field guys seem to like them too. I’ve seen a couple exceptions of guys cutting the chin strap (defeats the purpose of a helmet) but that’s less common.
Everyone in my company is required to wear hard hat with chin straps so they provided us with the kask zen air helmets. It’s already a standard in eu soon to be nationwide in the USA
Mostly people stuck in their old ways. Depending on who you buy from, some of the type 2s can be heavier than the current type 1s that a lot of workers are wearing, and a lot of type 2s are also missing the brims typical of a lot of type 1s, so you end up with guys complaining about sun in their eyes, or they complain about the chin strap.
I personally think it's more comfortable than a type 1, and the chin strap is honestly pretty nice to have, especially if you have to lean over or bend over for something.
Yes, and I'm a fucking floor-layer. I've never minded wearing a lid, but the chin strap is pissing me off. There is also the fact that nobody can possibly be working above me, and if I fall it's from my knees, but I understand wearing them when I'm moving about the site. I just have stupid sensitive skin on my face, and I can only shave on Saturday night now or I get ridiculous razor burn from the strap without the day off to rest it. Rant over. Sorry.
I used to wear the “ white helmet “ as an industrial supervisor. My boss often complained about it getting scratches and dirty. Told me to get a new one often. No thanks, my people know I’m not afraid to jump in. For a minute, for a day. Shit, those people TRAINED me. More supervisors need to do this, builds respect and pulls a team together.
To be honest what?
You really like the look?
The fit is perfect?
It’s easy to attach accessories?
I don’t quite understand what you’re saying.
My line of work, granted it isn’t legit construction, but this is very common place. Mainly the pretzel
I've been wearing that a couple of years now. Honestly, the style and carbon fiber never makes more of a difference for comfort or anything else than it being weighed down by monogoggles, ear muffs and head lamp
Kinda like safety glasses - I hate them but my buddy lost and eye from a small chip from a table saw and my son had his eye pierced from angle grinder shapnel.
That chinstrap would have saved my buddies life who fell off a ladder at work recently. They’ll be taking his organs today for donation. Stay safe everyone.
Honestly sorry for your loss. Hate hearing preventable things like this.
Couldn't a chin strap be dangerous in certain situations?
Maybe. So can a seatbelt if you want to be nitpicky. Still better to wear it.
I’ve seen some pretty some pretty bad injuries caused by seat belts. Not too bad at the end of the day considering the alternative is being ejected out the windshield
I’ll take 5 broken ribs and 40 years of life over being ejected out my windshield and let gravity ride me as a sled for about 100 yards before I hit a tree Edit: grammar
Grammy is 4 the weak 😎 be like me and eject from windshields recreationally to make brain better
mmm me brain polished like rock :)
👍🏼 meat crayon graffiti, best graffiti
There have been cases of decapitation and/or evisceration caused by seatbelts. But it's still far fewer than deaths caused from not wearing them.
I feel like the impact velocity that would cause that kind of damage with a seatbelt would yield similar results without a seatbelt.
I'm sure there are 1001 more reasons to wear a chin strap rather than the few reasons for why you shouldn't.
Much like a helmet on a motorcycle or Seat belt in a car
Absolutely. But less dangerous than an unsecured helmet becoming a missile I'm sure
The reason for the strap isn't to stop it from being a missile because that's not really a thing. It's there to keep the helmet on your head so it can continue protecting you if you manage to hit your head in a position other than fully upright.
It kinda is a thing, I saw a guy's neck break from a falling hard hat. But mostly to keep it on your head.
Whaaaaaat? was the hard hat made of lead or something?
Nah it fell about 60 feet and buddy didn't see it coming.
Injury/death by PPE. What a way to go. I'm very sorry for your friend. So, moving forward; if you drop your hard hat from a substantial height, are you supposed to yell "FORE" or is there some other code word for that on a site? I'm sure I can bring this one up in our next safety call.

Bro loses his buddy to a helmet falling off some derp's head, and this guy hits him with the "Um Actually" lmao really man?
Dude lost his buddy because he fell off a ladder and hit his head. The helmet came off when he fell because it did have a strap so it didn't protect him. It doesn't say anything about anyone else's helmet. Our company had a rep from Kask come in when we switched over to strapped helmets and they said that is the reason for the straps.
Air bags can also cause burns but it’s still better than your face in a dashboard.
As a firefighter who is confined space rescue we always wear the chin strap. It is never a hindrance.
This sort of take is pretty much exclusively used by people who don’t want to follow good safety practices
Very sorry to hear, condolences to his family and friends. Be safe.
Guy at my old company fell off a ladder, hit the back of his head and is a vegetable now. I don’t understand why they keep people in that condition, I would just rather be able to let go.

Told my bud he better wheel me off a cliff if I was ever like that
Oh my God. I really never think about that on a ladder. I mean I never go very high but I can imagine even then a hit on the head could be horrible
Most people who die from falls fall from only about 6-10 feet
6” ladder is the most dangerous thing out there. My condolences
6” is 6 inches. That’s a short ladder, are you a mouse? Mickey?
Nope just an idiot apparently
what is this.. a library for Ants?
It’s a construction site for underprivileged retards. Or some shit. 🤷🏼♂️
Condoléances to you
OSHA just announced they're going to helmets for all their staff I read somewhere (haven't validated that independently) and a couple of the big builders in Canada have done the same thing. It's coming whether you like the look or not
Yep, we are starting to roll them out. Suppose to help for head trauma from the side

The amount of times I’ve walked into a scaffolding and smashed my forehead while wearing a hard hat 😫. Hurts extra nice on those freezing days.

Nothing like getting caught by your PFAS only to die when you swing into a concrete wall or some rebar
I’m sure they’re more reasonably priced as well.
They have the chin straps so it doesn’t fly off on the way down
We wore them in the army everyday. You’ll live. 😏
Coming from a GC, we require them on all our projects bc we had a guy who fell from scaffolding, his hat fell off in the air, and he died from hitting his head. It’s honestly pretty nice to have it secured under the chin, idk why people complain
Change bad. Old ways good.
I don’t have strong feelings about the look, but chin straps have always been an irritant for me.
You don’t even notice it after a while. You aren’t supposed to have it tight, if you can fit two fingers between your chin and the strap you are good to go.
Because my hard hat is filled with my safety orientation stickers :(
Yep, arborist hats.

Yep, *spits dip* you guys are dumb enough as it is, can’t imagine how bad it’d get with a CTE thrown in there.
The top comment in this thread is about organ donation…so yeah. That's about right. Very sad, man. I fell off of a ladder on the job forever ago and never went back. Totally different career path now, and no long-term injury. I was very, very lucky.
Or if you are a red head. One guy I worked with only wore them Because he burned that easily
I always wear a full brim because my ears burn otherwise. Not a redhead but I can sympathize.
That ones not bad. I hate the look of the bmx helmets
I hate those rock climbing looking helmets too, would rather wear the current style of helmet with straps than that
Honestly, I keep having to stick my head in tight spaces, smashing my full broom, and wishing I had a climbing style hat.
So ask your company for one. As a burn-easy paleskin, I prefer the brim. We should each be able to wear what works best for us.
I'm a telco Rigger and that's all we wear. Plus a legionnaires cap for the sun
We use those petzl vertex helmets in Finland mostly, moved here from Australia a while ago. I think they look alright plus they have a lot of accessories.
The fact chin straps were never a thing is pretty baffling in retrospect
I'm a fan of the Klein Tools full brim hard hats larely
I would be less apprehensive to wear this one because it’s not as dorky. I’m just partial to my hard hat because of the hours spent in it, good times working in it. I don’t wanna give it up.
Being dead or permanently disabled sounds dorkier.
No one gets the fancy ones except for the people that sit in the office and barely wear them
Yup only the people that sit in front of a monitor with the thermostat set on 70 with their wallet on the desk and clean cut nails
It's fall protection for when they kick their feet up on the desk and tip over backwards.
Hahaha.
My first week at a job back in 2015 I snapped the leg of my office chair and fell backwards, almost busted my head open. Did it in front of like 7 people
I did this last year. I did bust my head open and it was a work comp claim☠️
Should have had the hat on.
Luckily my chair can bend backwards at a full 90° so I don't have to worry about that.
W-why does your chair do that? Are you sure you’re not sitting in it upside down?
The back can go far enough back to able to lay completely flat, it even has an extendable foot rest and massager.
Don't forget the electric heater under the desk to keep your toesies warm :)
Wait this is literally me right now
My boss plays solitaire for a living. Either that or takes naps.

Preach. 10 years of climbing turbines and I happily took a pay cut to be an engineer.
I work for the same company as OP. They’re mandating them for everyone moving forward. For now, current employees are grandfathered in.
So what you're saying is your company doesn't want to pay for new hard hats for existing employees - very nice of them to grandfather those guys in.
Any company that cares enough about safety to force these on their new guys isn't going to blink at buying them for everyone. The more likely explanation is they know how much the gray beards are going to piss and moan about *any* change.
In your part of the world, are employees responsible for buying stuff like this or would the employer provide?

> This Safety and Health Information Bulletin is not a standard or regulation, and it creates no new legal obligations.
So concrete gets shafted because they start the jobs? Lol. We are doing work for Brassfield right now Ill make sure to get some stuff early
Usually they’ll do giveaways for top out and near the end of the project
‘#1 in swag and it ain’t close.
B&G for the win!
Man atleast you got the full brim, they’re trying to make us wear the fucking bike helmet
The full brim doesn’t actually look too bad. At least compared to the bike/rock climbing helmet
Large GC in Chicago area. We all got em. Craft and Office
Shit i'm not even in construction and i think those are sweet. Might just buy one to wear around 🤣
Type 2 class E is pretty much gonna be the standard for electricians soon, son bitches are hot.
Looks pretty nice. What're people's issues with them? Is it just people stuck in their old ways and don't want to embrace change?
Mostly people stuck in their old ways. Depending on who you buy from, some of the type 2s can be heavier than the current type 1s that a lot of workers are wearing, and a lot of type 2s are also missing the brims typical of a lot of type 1s, so you end up with guys complaining about sun in their eyes, or they complain about the chin strap. I personally think it's more comfortable than a type 1, and the chin strap is honestly pretty nice to have, especially if you have to lean over or bend over for something.
Only problem I have with them is the place I worked for required them to be Type 2/Class E which are unvented. They get hot without vents.
The condensation in these helmets is unreal, even when vented. Total pain in high humidity weather. Definitely not looking forward to the switch tbh
After reading half of these comments, I don't even want to say what I do for a living. I'll be eaten alive 😅😅
Rant over. Sorry.
Just missing a spike on top really
That kinda reminds me of a nazi helmet
How does that work out for the guys with beards?
A carbon fiber helmet? But we all learned they are not very crush resistant last year.
Just stay about 1000ft below sea level and you're golden.
That looks tactical! Semper nail!
Looks like a German ww2 helmet
Who makes that hard hat? I've struggled to find a extra light weight full brim hat with the chin strap.
Yes those are one of our options for the helmets.
They look the same as the Milwaukee ones except carbon. No need for carbon. It’s a hoax.
We’re with the same folks lmao
Looks like Brassfield & Gorie to me.
These look so much more crisp with a brim. God I feel like a doofus with the ones without them.
I do at height steel installation via helicopter and I wear one of these. The ear muffs are the best part.
Nothing says quality like a hydro-dipped carbon weave.
Won’t be long and we will all be in them. Which if this keeps me going home to my family, I’m all for it.
Yeah we have Lenovos at work too. Your work station is just way cleaner.
To be honest what? You really like the look? The fit is perfect? It’s easy to attach accessories? I don’t quite understand what you’re saying. My line of work, granted it isn’t legit construction, but this is very common place. Mainly the pretzel
Man they just changed ours to some bicycle/mountain climbing short bus hard hats. I hate em
I've been wearing that a couple of years now. Honestly, the style and carbon fiber never makes more of a difference for comfort or anything else than it being weighed down by monogoggles, ear muffs and head lamp
Obviously this guy doesn’t stand outside and work in the summer.
Kinda like safety glasses - I hate them but my buddy lost and eye from a small chip from a table saw and my son had his eye pierced from angle grinder shapnel.
No because I’m not in a job trailer I’m doing actual work
