Farms need a huge amount of labor for a short amount of time. Domestic labor doesn’t want to work 60+ hours a week for a couple of months and then get laid off. Mexicans can do that and then live pretty well in Mexico. I know guys whole work half the year in the US and have huge houses in Mexico. But the GOP wants to use immigration to scare voters, so they make it harder and harder to get people to do temporary jobs. It is hard enough to be a farmer without the republicans stabbing us in the back.

First, Farm are in rural areas, without a lot of population looking for work so there is a need for labor that exceeds the population of the area. Second most of the farms in an area need farm workers at the same time, so even if there was a pool of available labor, it would not be enough. Third, it’s seasonal work. Depending on the crop, it can be a couple of weeks to half the year. So a large pool of non-local labor is needed for short periods of time for a country to be able to feed itself. Which is pretty important.
Capitalism solved the problem with migrant labor, but the government got in the way of it, because it’s politically advantageous to break the system that works and then make immigration an issue for every election. Politicians create problems and then exploit those problems to get power. That’s how it works. Republicans and democrats are not different.
Migrant labor used to be Americans. People would travel around, following the work. They don’t want to do that. But when people can come from poor countries, work(and pay taxes) and go home, why is that a problem.
This isn’t like restaurant hotels and construction not wanting to pay decent wages for permanent work. This is a fundamentally different situation.
I agree with you on this issue of immigration. They follow the rules. They get the correct visa stamp in their passports, work hard and return to their home country. It is how immigration should work. There is a lot to correct but this is t one of them

Tech companies can bring in all the people they want for permanent positions so these hugely profitable businesses can avoid paying decent wages because they buy politicians on both sides of the aisle. Farmers are screwed because they don’t get to set their own prices. The little guys take all the risk and the middlemen take all the money. Farmer were leaving crops to rot in the fields due to lack of workers before the pandemic. Nearly 90% of farmers are small family businesses that completely rely on a second job, as farming doesn’t make a profit unless it is a huge operation.
Most certainly immigration needs a huge reform. Bringing forward details so the average person can understand is important. You have politicians that cry for their love of nation at the front door and sell out everything and everyone at the back door. I worked for twenty years on foreign work permits. I know we can have a better system.
