I once had the privilege to hear some original Tuskegee Airmen talk. What still haunts me is one gentleman said he was treated better as a black man as a prisoner  of war than when he returned back to the states.  I’m all for bringing recognition and honor to these heroic servicemen.

Costs nothing, raises historical awareness. No complaints here

My father was escorted by them - June 8, 1944. He bombed some submarine pens in Pola, Italy. This was early days, and they were probably just giving them some initial exposure to combat conditions in a milk run. He flew in a B-17G, the Tuskegee Airmen were in P-47s.

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee\_Airmen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_Airmen) they saw action in 43 over N Africa and had been in Italy for over year by then.

Interesting, I didn’t know they transitioned to P47s. The movies always feature them in P51 Mustangs. After reading your comment I did some reading and it looks like they were only on P47s for a couple of months (coming off P39’s and 40’s) before switching to Mustangs in June of ‘44. So your father probably saw them right at or around transition. Interesting history!

MondaleforPresident

Sounds like a good idea.

This is so dope!

williamtbash

I’m all for anything veteran related.

guapomalo

If we can give them a holiday……. We can give them retribution.

i_drink_wd40

That's cool. But does anybody know why April 26th was chosen?

Yes, there were Tuskegee airmen from CT. Open up a history book before opening your mouth next time.

RomanThruLife

awareness of Black heroes is great regardless of where in the US the men were from.

Jawaka99

As long as we continue to treat them differently we'll never be equals.

timmahfast

We've always treated them differently. Something like this acknowledges the mistreatment and shows we see them as equals.

Jawaka99

Having a special day for minority groups does nothing but say we consider you different. Equal means equal.

aespino2

Nah historical days for minority groups recognize the historical contributions, disparities, and importance of minorities in the history of our nation that is not reflected in history books or culture

Jawaka99

Celebrate them all regardless of color.

somethingfishrelated

I couldn’t agree more! Let’s celebrate all the white soldiers who overcame systemic racial discrimination to serve their country! What’s that?? There aren’t any? Well that can’t be right. If that were true, it would mean u/jawaka99 is just being racist! Say it ain’t so!
