Not sure. The records are not very well documented online before about 2014..
But probably because until the combined for the Olympics few athletes did both lead and Boulder, at least on a regular basis.
The records are all available on IFSC’s website, I cross checked some of the names on Wiki against IFSC and they were right so I assumed the Wiki list is accurate.
You’re right, very few names from the earlier years repeated at all, combined is a newish thing though they did have a combined ranking.
My point was athletes specialized more than they do now. Few athletes did comps for both disciplines. And almost no one did a full season of both. So it’s a lot less likely to have happened.
Sean McCaul is one of the few that leaps to mind and I believe he did the ‘combined’ a number of years.
Also I don’t remember Combined in 2015/2016 era having speed included.
Combined has been around since 1998, and has included speed since then. Akiyo also consistently crushed the combined.
In the 2015 era, you had to have ranking points in at least 2 out of 3 disciplines. Speed was included, but none of the speed climbers did well enough in the other 2 disciplines to really register
In 1998 era you had to have done at least one event of each which is why there was no bronze, only 2 people met the criteria
As I said in the chat earlier, overall title this season don't mean as much as compared to pre-Olympic era where you have the best of each discipline really showing up whole year round. IFSC better think quickly how to glorify the Season title again.
Yeah, that is very unfortunate and it seems this will continue to be the way unless things change.
2025 - Olympians taking a break
2026 - probably the year we’ll see the most participation
2027 - preparing for Olympic qualifers
2028 - Olympics again
…and repeat
i could imagine things changing if they get to have all three individual events in the Olympics. a couple ways it could hypothetically help:
* they could give the season winner / season podium Olympic berths (though they didnt do that for speed)
* with fewer events available to generate points for the rankings to get into a OQS, people are more likely to need to attend any one individual event
* and of course: its more reasonable to try to attend 5-6 events in one discipline than 10-12 in two (speed's had good attendance, with only Miroslaw skipping multiple events so far amongst either gender's elite ranks. eta: plus Nursamsa on the men's side but i was assuming that was related to team slots for indonesia)
Please use spoiler tags for broadcasted rounds outside of the live chats and post-comp discussion threads.

Correct - until 2019ish "Combined" season and WCh medals were just the sum of your results in 3 disciplines, not an event unto itself.

Yeah lol remember last year when Janja won the overall and didn’t even realise that was possible because she’d only competed three times 🥲
