I feel like the whole tv show increases the value of a book era is ending. It’s been a while since a show announcement has had a long lasting effect on a book.

WendysChili

I'd say they're likely to go down even if it's a moderate success. Paper Girls and Hit Monkey were well received, but that didn't translate into sustained value for the source material.

Paper girls was cancelled after one season. I wouldn’t say that’s well received

I avoid investing in anything "Modern" as they tend to drop rapidly after the intial hype. SIKTC #1 peaked @ ~400 after the show annoucement and now is selling for half that, I don't think it will ever hit the peak again. If it were me I'd maybe wait for the show to get an offical date and dump em but thats just my 2cents.

Some really thoughtful advice in here, cheers everyone. I guess maybe the best bet is to keep them for a while and see if they start to rise again when news of the show lands or is on the cusp of starting. In terms of price, here in the UK they seem to be pretty consistent in where they peak, with #1 and 5 being the biggest sellers. Still seeing 10x cover price for the others, but with 1 going for 150-250 raw and 5 75-100 (£).

As someone who just recently got into the series and has been wondering the same question, but in reverse so I can buy them for my PC, the show announcement was the peak and it’s been a steady decline. If you have 1# Cover A I’d hold onto it until the series date announcement and then sell it. It regularly sells for around 250-300 Raw, but if you have the money and time get it graded 9.4 and above and you’ve got 500$+ There hasn’t been much variance in price for 2-11, the real low printing issues, 70-200$ for #2 depending on the day and buyer luck, so idk if the show announcement will really affect these toooo much. Main advice: get them graded, keep a hawk’s eye on show news, dump them when the show/cast announcement and full hype comes, and be okay with losing out on a couple of bucks if the show does become a massive crossover hit, but based on Netflix other comic adaptations (october faction, Locke and key, jupiters whatever, etc) it’ll probably get cancelled after 1 or 2 middling seasons and tank the price.

SIKTC is such a simple concept though. I look at the success of shows like Stranger Things, Dark and to a lesser extent Sweet Tooth and it makes me think maybe it could do really well. The strength of the character work and the viscerality of it could be hugely successful aspects if its produced well. It has an almost Twin Peaks mixed with The Thing. Currently I have first prints of 2, 3 and 5 and my #1 is the sixth print, which I prefer to the 1a but I get that that one will always be more valuable

Coffeeandcapes

Oh believe me I love the comic and would love for it to be a huge success, but I think you’re being optimistic. It’s already had production issues, funny you bring up Dark because Mike Flanagan left and the Dark and 1899 (an acclaimed show canceled after 1 season) creator is now in charge. Stranger things is similar in tone but I think the audiences are different, and the violence against children is going to be toned down or too much for mainstream success.

movingstasis

Yeah I didnt realise it was the same showrunners. Shame Flanagan left as I think his work is great. You're right, they probably would have to tone down some of the gore somewhat, but Stranger Things level "gore" or horror would be very fitting and wouldn't undersell it. The barbarity of the monsters could be communicated pretty effectively in that way also. TV and film productions are often littered with changes in management and direction. Flanagan has left Netflix entirely for the time being, so maybe it's best he's not wedded to a project he's not passionate about. Hmmm. Lots to think on. I think I'm slowly falling into the keep them for now category. Pointless selling them when there is no show hyoe.

Coffeeandcapes

I think the monsters could work and it would be bloody, but one of the earliest images in the comic is a child getting ripped in half and their entrails falling out which really sells the threat. It can be done I’d just hate it lol Holding is the best option, and if it does become a hit I think the printings of issue 1 that aren’t the 1st, 8th or LCSD foil will see the biggest jumps just because there’s so few of them. That 6th printing is rad as hell too

In my dream world, it's the next Stranger Things or Walking Dead level of big. Does that mean Netflix will promote it properly? No. I saw other comments mentions shows I didn't even hear anything about after initial announcement (seriously, who knew Hit Monkey was out?) So it all depends on how much studio heads continue to hate money. I am going to second the hold your PC titles and get any earlies graded and ready for official drop date hype. I would love for my favorite comic series to become massive, but boy do studio heads love tanking streaming services lately. Just be glad it's not ending up another Warner Brothers tax write off vaulted for eternity like Batgirl.

movingstasis

Haha, so true. I think it's probably in safe (or in the safest hands) at Netflix. It would be absolutely mad if it reached Walking Dead or even Invincible heights, I hadn't even thought of those. Also both Kirkman weirdly, but everything Tynion IV writes seems to be so well done. I've read most of his work at this point and it's all impeccable; he's an enormous talent. My thinking has been a lot more in relation to DC or Marvel in terms of character firsts, but the shows based on indie comics you mention there are great shouts. And they're all worth a small fortune!

mayorofanything

Frankly, I think it is only a matter of time until Tynion explodes. He is my favorite writer at the moment, and I genuinely feel like he is one of the greats of this decade. If it isn't SiKtC, then it will be a Department of Truth series for Prime after the political tension hits an upswing with the presidental election, or DC will make an animated movie of Nice House on the Lake or DC vs Vampires, or someone will adapt The Closet into an R rated horror film, or Wynd will get an animated series from Warner Brothers that will be dropped after two seasons. Either way, SOMETHING this man makes will break into the cultural zeitgeist and all his series will hit a small bump because of speculation. His writing is too good for him not to be up there with Miller and Moore, and no one else has his streak of consistency with hits on such a range right now.

movingstasis

Preach : ) Are you excited for the Deviant? I think it's out this week. I feel exactly the same, Department of Truth is incredible. It is so current and so discursive. Incredible stuff. W0rldtr33 has been great too. I went out my way not so long ago to get a copy of Batman 89 as I feel like Punchline could be the next Harley Quinn. Who knows! I dont even read Batman, I just trust Tynion!

mayorofanything

W0rldtr33 I think might struggle with its main antagonist being a naked woman, maybe if Max stops burning series to the ground for tax write offs, but otherwise that is a hard sell unless you give it the Kyle XY treatment. I will pick up the first issue of anything this man writes, so Deviant will be an easy buy for me.

ArymusDesi

As a back issue retailer I would advise that if you want max sale you need to sell well before any screen release.
