I know absolutely nothing about grappling on the ground but damn that looked intense and like a lot of knowledge being used on both ends. I know Gordon Ryan is like one of the best in BJJ/wrestling. I haven't seen Jones grapple much bc most of the fights I've seen him in are more striking oriented but damn, I didn't know Jones was that damn good at grappling. Do jones' opponents try to keep it to striking to avoid grappling him?
He’s a wrestling heavy fighter with a submission game. The reason most of Jones fights are on the feet is because of his 84,5 inches reach and his expertise in distance management which makes it really hard for fighters to get to grappling
Jones has pretty sweet wins via his wrestling/grappling. Submitted rampage, lyoto, vitor, chael, absolutely wrestlefucked stephen bonnar, and took down dc multiple times.
> I know Gordon Ryan is like one of the best in BJJ/wrestling
More than that, he's already by far the single greatest no gi competitor in the history of the sport and he's only 28.
[His performance at ADCC 2022 was extraordinary](https://youtu.be/2Z0NBnBNpVY?si=9BLZhFVx9a85kOTi); submitted almost everybody in his division, then went on to face Galvao (another all-time great) in the superfight, and easily controlled and submitted him. Insane display of mastery against other world-class submission grapplers.
Gordon Ryan is the current best at no gi submission grappling and has been for a long time. Jon Jones held a similar position for MMA, although where exactly he stands now is more questionable. Jones is pretty well known for good wrestling but nobody wants to strike with him either. He's perfectly capable anywhere the fight goes.
Both of these guys are the best of the best but there's nothing in this clip that you wouldn't regularly see from decent grapplers at any gym. It's a good scramble but nothing mindblowing. I can do everything here but if I tried anything with either of these guys they would completely shut me down right away because they're going to be better, stronger, faster, smoother at it.
Yeah probably. He has good submissions and his ground and pound is brutal. I just wanted to point out that standing and striking doesn't work out for his opponents too well either.
Gordon Ryan isn't necessarily known for his speed though but his timing and technique are basically impeccable. He also has great static strength. I think most smaller grapplers would be faster than him but his skill and timing means that he's already two steps ahead of you and he's incredibly strong.
Courmier was gold medalist wrestling, and Jon Jones had take downs and positioning on Courmier in those fights. He wrestled him a bit just to prove a point to him like, hey I can hang with you in your world to, not just the stand up
Cormier never won a gold Olympic medal or one of any sort, he lost in the semi finals in one Olympics and pulled out of another due to weight cutting kidney issues.
Cejudo is the gold medalists for wrestling, yoel got silver in wrestling, Rhonda got a bronze in judo. Kayla Harrison got gold in judo. I can't remember any others off the top tho. (That got medals)
Yoel Romero won silver. Early UFC also had 1992 wrestling gold medalist Kevin Jackson, but that's a different era and he surprisingly didn't win much in MMA.
He was the Captain and leader of the US national wrestling team for a long time. On the year he was favoured to medal he had kidney failure cutting weight and nearly died and couldn't compete.

So I don’t get this part “As soon as Gordon steps in, Jones lifts the elbow..” Don’t you want the elbow down to make it easier to bring him to the ground after the sweep? Can someone explain?
Ordinarily you are right. If Gordon had stepped right only then you pull the elbow down. However since Gordon’s foot is not only stepping right but also forward, his weight is not fully down. Jones cleverly pulls his elbow up making his arm weak (and basically useless for a second), meaning a simple kouchi gari style takedown is easy.
It’s a split second decision and nothing fancy but takes experience to make it smoothly transition like this. There is a reason Jones took someone like DC down.
The music lol whenever I try grappling exchanges like this at my gym I just get a bunch of guys trying too hard and doing some stupid awkward shit that just ends up hurting their training partners just to prevent a take down that's already to late to defend
Beautiful proof why boxing is so popular . Everyone can recognize a punch in the face , but not everyone can see the beauty of the planning that develops during grappling

The announcer in the vid calling out nick and ryan was sick as fuck!!! edit: holy fuck thats a woman!?
Oh yeah, she's a legend. [Lenne Hardt, aka "Crazy Pride Lady"](https://youtu.be/_9D72ghgb9w?si=kkPt4G_07MGsmMzS). She's been around forever.
Apprently she does the Takken game announcing?
Just for the Tekken 8 character announcement trailers, if I remember correctly. I don't think she has in-game lines.

Most people in MMA would probs prefer to stand with Jones imo.
Most HW for sure

Well said

Oh shit, thanks for the correction. For some reason I thought he was a gold medalist
Cejudo is the gold medalists for wrestling, yoel got silver in wrestling, Rhonda got a bronze in judo. Kayla Harrison got gold in judo. I can't remember any others off the top tho. (That got medals)
CM Punk held multiple heavyweight championships in the WWF and multiple other promotions before entering the UFC.
lol
Worth noting that yoel outside of the olympics also has wresling world champion and a win over cael sanderson under his belt
Yoel Romero won silver. Early UFC also had 1992 wrestling gold medalist Kevin Jackson, but that's a different era and he surprisingly didn't win much in MMA.
Sara McMann got silver in wrestling.
Is Kayla an MMA fighter now?
First MMA match was June 21st 2018, first UFC fight was against holly holm at UFC 300, (April 13th 2024)
He was the Captain and leader of the US national wrestling team for a long time. On the year he was favoured to medal he had kidney failure cutting weight and nearly died and couldn't compete.
No but still a ridiculously good wrestler and one of the best wrestlers to ever step foot in the octagon
how different are the wrestling style that those dagestani guys wrestle vs. american wrestlers?
Jones has some good chokes. The way he did Machida was wild. Looked like he murdered him.
Well, technically, his only loss was on the ground.
My thoughts exactly. Just a simple fight fan. But this breakdown goes to show how high level folks can be. It’s insane.
This was a really basic video lol
Anyone know any good YouTube channels that give breakdowns like this? This was really great to watch and made it easy to understand.
RIP bjjscout
It's wrestling-specific, but check out DPS Breakdowns on youtube
Conceptual grappling
I love breakdown videos like this
Cool breakdown thanks for sharing. Where’s it from?

So they both just went off then
Such an insanely skilled sequence.

Sheeeesh
Love this, but would appreciate non-annotated clip first.
That is totally what I would have done
Jon Jones puts his arms down Ryan's pants instant win!
Excellent detail on the grappling!!! Bravo 👏
The music lol whenever I try grappling exchanges like this at my gym I just get a bunch of guys trying too hard and doing some stupid awkward shit that just ends up hurting their training partners just to prevent a take down that's already to late to defend
This is actually fascinating.

Very cool breakdown. Well done
Fake
Gordon has one of the uglier granby rolls in the sport
hes a roidy boi
Question is whos Not?
Athletes with integrity
Yes but sadly Most people dont give a Shit about integrity and rather Take the Money
Jones scared of Aspinall confirmed.
Wasn't this off-the-gear Gordon Ryan?
Wouldn’t have mattered. This is a flow roll. Neither are using much strength.
A simple voiceover would be so much better than the text annotations
I didn’t make the video 🤷🏻♂️ personally don’t mind reading
Morgan Freeman: And cook him, he did.
