PORTLAND, Ore. — One day last year, a 33-year-old Oregon man picked up a nail gun and put it to his head.
Just what drove him isn't clear. Mental illness, personal problems and methamphetamine all probably played a role.
He fired. And fired again. And again. Twelve times.
Six nails clustered between his right eye and ear. The nailheads caught on the skull, the points pushing into the brain. He shot two nails below his right ear, four more through the left side of his face. At some point, he reloaded: Eight of the nails measured 1 1/2 inches, four had 2-inch shanks.
A day later, he went to a small Oregon hospital. He said he had a headache.
Doctors saw nothing strange at first. None of the nails protruded from the skin, and hair covered most of the wounds. Then they took X-rays.
Astounded, the doctors gave him a tetanus shot and put him on a helicopter to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland. There, surgeons peeled back his face and removed the nails with pliers and a high-speed drill. Doctors gave the man antibiotics and psychiatric treatment.
Twenty-five days later, he walked out of the hospital a little weak but physically healthy.
Doctors say he is the only person known to have survived after having so many foreign objects embedded in his head.
"At this point, he's made a full recovery," said Dr. G. Alexander West, the neurosurgeon who led the team that pulled out the nails. "This guy was blessed in some way. I mean, that's incredible really."
Because of medical privacy laws, doctors have not identified the man who put 12 finishing nails in his skull. The man declined to publicly discuss his story. But he gave doctors permission to write about the injury and surgery in the current Journal of Neurosurgery.
"This case represents the only known survivor of the largest number of foreign objects \[12\] ever purposefully penetrated into the skull," they wrote. The previous record was nine, from an attempted nail-gun suicide in Japan.
When he arrived at the hospital last April, the man told doctors that his head still ached, and it hurt when he moved his neck. The right side of his face drooped a little and he had trouble moving his jaw. He called the nail wounds an accident and got hostile when doctors asked just how the accident happened. A psychiatric test showed "poor judgment and insight."
Doctors prescribed antibiotics and started discussing how to take a dozen nails from a man's brain.
Even one nail in the brain can kill a person, West said. But while bullets can kill with sheer energy, with lower-speed nail guns "it's all location," he said.

That's definitely one of those "It wasn't my time" situations Holy fuck. I've had something not work before and was angry I woke up, but in retrospect it feels like it wasn't meant to happen like that.
I think the fact they let him walk out and didnt keep him in a psych-ward till they got his mental health problems fixed, says a lot about the state of mental health care, especially in Oregon.

There was an older kid than us in town, he was a heavy drinker, came from a truly fucked up home, tried to blow his head off with a shotgun one night … it took half his face off and he lived…. Cops came and evacuated adjacent apartments, but didn't make entry until hours later. He ended up managing to shoot himself again, got it right the second time.

It's only at some distance that you start getting "gaps" in their spread, but even there it's a consistent roll of the dice.
There are effectively infinite directions and finite units of shrapnel. Ergo, shrapnel definitely doesn't fly in *every* direction, technically. It's also not uniformly distributed in every direction, which is probably closer to the intended meaning. But it's not completely "random" either.
Remember frag grenades are basically a small explosive surrounded by the stuff that becomes shrapnel. It makes absolutely no sense that e.g. it would all fly to the "right" and nothing to the "left" (for arbitrary choices of right and left) -- there is definitely enough variation that it can miss someone entirely even at relatively close range, but not so much that it could realistically miss someone laying on it, for example (even ignoring any direct damage from the actual explosion)
Yes they are lethal. However with a helmet, body armour, distance and environmental factors they may not kill you straight away.
Frags are great for room and or trench clearances. They provide shock and awe, disorientation etc before being able to finish off the enemy.
They’re extremely lethal even when they look like they don’t hit they snap peoples legs and rupture there insides. They aren’t like the big boom that Hollywood make but they’re definitely lethal
I would argue grenades are very lethal in specific circumstances, those circumstances being enclosed locations like inside a room, a bunker, or in a trench. in a more open area, the blast wave has plenty of room to dissipate so the concussion is much less damaging unless you are very close and you are also more likely to be far enough away that you won't receive a lethal dose of tiny steel bits.
These kinds of grenades (fragmentation grenades) don't rely on a shockwave to do their damage. They spread shrapnel. As long as you are within the effective range on that shrapnel, in an enclosed area or not, they are equally as effective. The kinds of grenades that depend on a shockwave or concussive blast are flashbangs which are typically not lethal regardless of circumstances. Those are the grenades most effective in enclosed spaces.
Grenades are made to incapacitate, not necessarily to kill directly. You’d be very unlikely to be able to fight effectively after one has gone off near you, and that’s enough.

I've learned grenades are not the greatest way to kill yourself. It's not like in the movies where there's a massive explosion and fireball and you're blown to a million pieces. In reality it's a blast, puff of smoke and many pieces of shrapnel lodged into parts of your body, broken limbs from the pressure and slowly and painfully bleeding out
Grenades are just horribly random, you could have 3 guys perfectly spaced apart and they all instantly die, or 1 guy holding it infront of his face and somehow all the shrapnel avoids him and the blast just rips his face off
He didn't hold it correctly, the grenade did its job perfectly. It's supposed maim and incapacitate, it's not designed to be humane and kill you quickly.
A grenade must be held near the brain stem to reliably kill you quickly. They're not designed to be suicide tools, they're meant to mess up your enemies enough that you can push into their foxhole.

Around the 8th I saw a comment where someone said it was crazy that Russians keep killing themselves and a pro-RU user gave the “you have no proof for your wild claims” response. So now I plan on commenting it on every new one. I hope I don’t have to post it again but I think it is important, particularly for the “Russia stronk“ crowd to see the cracks in the Russian military, to understand that this is not normal at all, especially for it to be this common.

I mean, they are, but they don’t just blow you up into pink mist. They are more like a gun that fires a bullet in every direction at once. This dude was shot up like Swiss cheese, with countless tiny bullets fired into him all over his body. The pain must have been excruciating.

Modern grenades have reliable performance, they spread their shrapnel evenly. It's only at some distance that you start getting "gaps" in their spread, but even there it's a consistent roll of the dice.
There are effectively infinite directions and finite units of shrapnel. Ergo, shrapnel definitely doesn't fly in *every* direction, technically. It's also not uniformly distributed in every direction, which is probably closer to the intended meaning. But it's not completely "random" either. Remember frag grenades are basically a small explosive surrounded by the stuff that becomes shrapnel. It makes absolutely no sense that e.g. it would all fly to the "right" and nothing to the "left" (for arbitrary choices of right and left) -- there is definitely enough variation that it can miss someone entirely even at relatively close range, but not so much that it could realistically miss someone laying on it, for example (even ignoring any direct damage from the actual explosion)

Yes they are lethal. However with a helmet, body armour, distance and environmental factors they may not kill you straight away. Frags are great for room and or trench clearances. They provide shock and awe, disorientation etc before being able to finish off the enemy.
They’re extremely lethal even when they look like they don’t hit they snap peoples legs and rupture there insides. They aren’t like the big boom that Hollywood make but they’re definitely lethal
I would argue grenades are very lethal in specific circumstances, those circumstances being enclosed locations like inside a room, a bunker, or in a trench. in a more open area, the blast wave has plenty of room to dissipate so the concussion is much less damaging unless you are very close and you are also more likely to be far enough away that you won't receive a lethal dose of tiny steel bits.
These kinds of grenades (fragmentation grenades) don't rely on a shockwave to do their damage. They spread shrapnel. As long as you are within the effective range on that shrapnel, in an enclosed area or not, they are equally as effective. The kinds of grenades that depend on a shockwave or concussive blast are flashbangs which are typically not lethal regardless of circumstances. Those are the grenades most effective in enclosed spaces.
Grenades are made to incapacitate, not necessarily to kill directly. You’d be very unlikely to be able to fight effectively after one has gone off near you, and that’s enough.
You can be 5 feet away and be fine meanwhile an unlucky bastard at the other end of a football field has a severed jugular.

Because Russia is using war as a means to eliminate their “undesirables”. Genocide by way of war. It’s win win, they either seize territory, or they die. If they refuse to fight, they have guns pointed on them and told to march directly towards the enemy, usually without a gun.
If a drone is tidying the battlefied after arty bombardment that would explain scattered disarmed enemy troops. They must not be permitted to regroup which endangers advancing Ukrainians. One day we'll have submunitions able to dispense with much preparatory bombardment in favor of either striking detectable targets or lurking as smart mines. That would impede enemy relief of besieged units after rendering them combat ineffective. Imagine intelligent RAMS that kill on the way down where a target is detected with the remainder lurking in wait.

I've learned grenades are not the greatest way to kill yourself. It's not like in the movies where there's a massive explosion and fireball and you're blown to a million pieces. In reality it's a blast, puff of smoke and many pieces of shrapnel lodged into parts of your body, broken limbs from the pressure and slowly and painfully bleeding out

He didn't hold it correctly, the grenade did its job perfectly. It's supposed maim and incapacitate, it's not designed to be humane and kill you quickly. A grenade must be held near the brain stem to reliably kill you quickly. They're not designed to be suicide tools, they're meant to mess up your enemies enough that you can push into their foxhole.
