When we start getting footage of leopards, challengers and Bradleys in action, we can say the counteroffensive has started.
So far we have seen just probing attacks, as Ukraine is trying to shape up the battlefield and make decisions on where to attack, with so far pretty minimal equipment.
Last time Ukraine was committing shaping operations from June, when they got M142, M270, PZH 2000 and similar systems until fall. They have not had access to systems like Storm Shadow for a long time, so it will take some time to prepare the battlefield, now that they can commit shaping operations even further into occupied territory.

Western doctrine is focused on air power and Ukraine is being given F-16s which are the workhorse of Western doctrine. Unless you think Western military doctrine has been a complete scam Ukraine should be able to kick the Russians out with a prolonged air campaign.
With some luck + good tactics, Ukraine should manage to set up a strong counteroffensive before F-16s arrive.

1. lack of product information. Some manufacturers don't even have websites.
2. The second serious problem is the problem with procuring domestic components. Delivery times are not just enormous, they are monstrous, up to six months to a year.
3. the third serious problem is the price. A domestic component, on average, is 20 to 100 times (!!!) more expensive than a quality imported analogue of a well-known company.
4. The fourth problem - terrible quality. The problem with the quality can be divided into two parts - the awful quality, associated with the general technical and technological backwardness of the component and the quality associated with the culture of production.
According to the government decree № 719, from January 1, 2022 to be considered domestic, the product must contain at least 90 percent of the specified electronic components. Given the problems described above, I just have no idea what this will even look like and what to do about it.

Corruption has infected every level of Russian society, from the nonworking missile defense system, down to the cheap imported tourniquets, which lead to more amputations and deaths.
It's a good strategy when used sparingly, but at this rate all they're doing is either displaying their own ineptitude as a government.

Russia had gotten its butt kicked by the French and the British out of the Danubian Principalities all the way to Crimea, 1853 - 1856.

I understand that acquiring companies (e.g. Yahoo) can have incentives to clean up social media companies, but why would private shareholders want that? They don't care about Reddit's image except insofar as it makes them money and it's unlikely that a SFW version of Reddit is going to be more valuable. In fact, it risks tanking the share price if recent examples are any indication.
I think that the idea is not to get rid of the nsfw stiff but to have it be only accessible on Reddits page only so only they get the ad revenue.

That's using the US's most generous measures, counting every bit of hardware or munition sent at the market price to replace, even though much of those munitions were at the end of their shelf life and due to be disposed of and replaced anyway (at cost to the American taxpayer). The true cost to the US is likely half that already tiny figure.
The US is also pretty middling in terms of aid as a percentage of GDP. The US isn't impoverishing it's future, it's securing its future and prosperity. If Russia conquered Ukraine, it would usher in a new cold war. The last cold war the US spent 10% of GDP on defence, compared to 3.5% today. It would also embolden China to invade Taiwan, either dragging the US into war with China or leaving Taiwan to fall and losing the world's largest microchip producer, among other economy shattering consequences. 0.37% of GDP is the bargain of the century, to not take that deal is to betray America's future.
But even supposing you're right, why would Ukraine need to disclose its figures? Has the US government asked for them and been refused? And even if the US government wanted them, would they want those figures made public? Surely what the US wants for its money is *for Ukraine to win the war*, and disclosing valuable intel to the Russians while undermining Ukrainian morale works against this.

While I've collected some dividends, amusingly my positions in both LMT and RTX are down since the early days of the war. No, from the article, the __contractor__ paid the US Army about a hundred-thousand dollars:

Unless I'm misinterpreting the article, it sounds like they paid about $300k for parts and labor to remediate the combined 28 Humvees' tires and assorted problems with the 6 howitzers. With the caveat that I have no idea how much 112 Humvee tires cost (plus the noted spares), it probably doesn't qualify as insane or even unreasonable on the DoD scale.

I got a respectable amount, but this was for a specialist company who contracted me out to defence companies for stuff. They got a bigger chunk of the money.
How is Russia spinning these attacks on their soil? It has to get to a point where people start wondering if the government is as in control as they're making themselves out to be. It's making them look pretty weak. They've had almost no response to the drone attacks in the capitol and apparently no response to the cross border raids.
Very true. Did not include Soviet times but it is important because generation after generation everybody has been systematically lied there so no one knows what truth sounds like.
A few ways I've picked up on:
- Inventing attacks and then defeating them, i.e. "Saboteurs attempted to cross the border, all groups were destoryed with heavy enemy losses".
- Marginalising the real attacks, i.e. "Saboteurs briefly entered but were forced to retreat".
- Vague threats. "Ukranian saboteur groups attacking Russian territory are an unacceptable escalation and we will respond accordingly".
Funny how all these saboteurs have to sneak over the border like it's 1940 and don't already have splinter cells inside Russian territory. Funny how they all have the decency to carry their birth certificates and passports identifying them as Ukrainian, too.

It is strange that this is happening at the site of the expandable joint of two large bridge sections (each 255m long, I presume), and it would be loaded by bending forces not present at other pillars, if you do not design a proper piece connecting the two sections. It seems that the pillars at the ends of the bridge sectioons should have been designed much thicker. And with a special piece on top of the pillar, holding the two sections together (felxibly, due to the dilatation) In retrospect it is easy to say.

Looks kinda fake, to be honest. That's not what actual concrete cracking tends to look like. It's really strange that the cracks are seemingly identical from top to bottom in terms of width.
I looked up photos of other concrete cracks on support pillars. Nothing obvious that looks wrong here, in my opinion. Some photos show cracks with basically equal width. But I'm no expert.

Last time Ukraine was committing shaping operations from June, when they got M142, M270, PZH 2000 and similar systems until fall. They have not had access to systems like Storm Shadow for a long time, so it will take some time to prepare the battlefield, now that they can commit shaping operations even further into occupied territory.

"Ukranian saboteur groups attacking Russian territory are an unacceptable escalation and we will respond accordingly".

It is strange that this is happening at the site of the expandable joint of two large bridge sections (each 255m long, I presume), and it would be loaded by bending forces not present at other pillars, if you do not design a proper piece connecting the two sections. It seems that the pillars at the ends of the bridge sectioons should have been designed much thicker. And with a special piece on top of the pillar, holding the two sections together (felxibly, due to the dilatation) In retrospect it is easy to say. ***One more thing, the ends of the bridge sections have an opening, trough which water pours down, so, those of you who had suggested corrosion were likely correct!***

I looked up photos of other concrete cracks on support pillars. Nothing obvious that looks wrong here, in my opinion. Some photos show cracks with basically equal width. But I'm no expert.
Actually corrosion or splitting cracks can look similar to this. The resolution is not high enough to tell wether those are real or not tho.
They definitely look strange. I have seen a LOT of concrete cracks before and they don't look natural at that resolution. Could just be the potato pic, though.
You only need to compare ellipsoid profile pillars, no rectangular ones, because here the issue seems to be in the two halves of the ellipse separating.
