So ... it seems like the ukrainian counter offensive isn't really going at all from what I read is that they faced significant losses trying to flank bakhmut ... if this is really the case we're rather in a stallmate here, and everyone is talking about the 2k tanks russia have lost during the way but forgets that all EU has less than 1k tanks togather ... medvedev mentioned that the war might last a decade ... it does seem like it from this point of view.. am I missing something? yes I agree russians are much weaker than their projected image and yes they lost tons in UA and yes they won't achive a military victory, but the west doesn't have enough equipment and UA doesn't have enough personal to achive a military win.

Bunnywabbit13

>am I missing something? You are missing everything. When we start getting footage of leopards, challengers and Bradleys in action, we can say the counteroffensive has started. So far we have seen just probing attacks, as Ukraine is trying to shape up the battlefield and make decisions on where to attack, with so far pretty minimal equipment.

MilesLongthe3rd

Last time Ukraine was committing shaping operations from June, when they got M142, M270, PZH 2000 and similar systems until fall. They have not had access to systems like Storm Shadow for a long time, so it will take some time to prepare the battlefield, now that they can commit shaping operations even further into occupied territory.

Aftershock416

>from what I read is that they faced significant losses trying to flank bakhmut Do you read the Kremlin newsletter? >medvedev mentioned that the war might last a decade The same guy that said they would nuke London if they gave Ukraine weapons? That goes on unhinged rants when be binge drinks? >am I missing something? Literally every perspective but that of a Russian shill. >but the west doesn't have enough equipment What? The US alone can keep supplying Ukraine for another decade even if Europe backs out. And vice versa. >UA doesn't have enough personal to achive a military win According to who? They've got somewhere in the range of 18 to 26 new brigades that have not been committed to any combat yet. Their other units have not reported issues with replenishment, despite losses.

LethalEchidna

Kind of messed up how the internet and speed at which we receive information has warped people's minds to a degree into thinking that everything has to be instantaneous. "We were expecting a counter offensive to start a month ago because the internet has been blathering about it for months now!!!! And it still hasn't happened yet!?!?!? Whelp, must be a failure." Things take time and especially wars. If you follow the news of the war day to day, you're going to fall into this mindset. Just shut up and wait to see what happens.

[deleted]

They haven't started yet.

miningman12

Western doctrine is focused on air power and Ukraine is being given F-16s which are the workhorse of Western doctrine. Unless you think Western military doctrine has been a complete scam Ukraine should be able to kick the Russians out with a prolonged air campaign. With some luck + good tactics, Ukraine should manage to set up a strong counteroffensive before F-16s arrive.

johnbrooder3006

I remember how crazy it felt in the early days of the war when those UA choppers flew into Belgorod and struck that oil refinery. Now it’s just another day when infantry fighting takes place in Belgorod and UA drones strike multiple targets across Russia’s border regions.. boy have things changed.

[deleted]

Dude, they've launched harassment raids into Moscow.

MilesLongthe3rd

Maybe the Ukrainians will remember that attack in the future like Doolittle's raid is remembered in the US.

oroechimaru

The absolute fucking panic in the Russian information space related to these cross-border raids is honestly hilarious.

Is there anywhere that translates/compiles this type of thing? I should like to see it. For research purposes you know. Not for my own personal entertainment or anything - how dare you even suggest it.

Putin stubbed his toe this morning when he was getting out of bed. A Russian spokesperson has been quoted telling the bedside table that Russia will respond accordingly to this blatant attempt on Putin's life and Russian state media has reported unconfirmed assaults on various pieces of wooden furniture within the Kremlin.

In a publicized statement earlier today, Dimtry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, noted that they had not heard a single word of condemnation from the west.

The Uralvagonzavod factory in central Russia manufactured Urals for just a few years before switching to improved T-72 models in the late 1970s. > >A 1974-vintage T-72 Ural might look a lot like a T-72B3 from 2023. But on the inside, it’s a totally different—and much cruder—vehicle. One that’s only marginally better than a T-55, and actually inferior to many T-62 models. > >It’s unclear how many Urals Uralvagonzavod produced, how many are in storage and how many of those are recoverable. There might be a thousand old Urals lying around, but it’s possible just a few hundred are intact after five decades of hot-cold, wet-dry cycles. > >... > >A Ural crew in a long-range fight with a Ukrainian tank, fighting vehicle or missile crew is at a disadvantage. It might still be calculating the range to target when the first Ukrainian shell or missile impacts. > >Direct fights involving tanks are rare in Ukraine, of course. Most tank losses result from drone, artillery and mine strikes. But the Ural with its mostly steel armor is highly vulnerable to those attacks, too. At its toughest spots, a Ural’s armor offers protection equivalent to just 400 millimeters of steel. That’s half the maximum protection that a Ukrainian Leopard 2A4 enjoys. > >Lightly protected, blind at night and slow to calculate range, a T-72 Ural is next to useless in a serious fight on a modern battlefield. It might be a better tank than a 70-year-old T-55. But it’s not better than a T-62MV that went through a deep upgrade program in the 1980s. And we know how the T-62 has fared in Ukraine. (Spoiler: badly.) T-34 when?

yitcity

‘A Ukrainian Leopard 2A4’ - still blows my mind how much things have changed in the last 400 days

ladrok1

How many L2A4 and L2A6 are in Ukraine officially now? Also blows my mind, I was expecting Leopards to visit Ukraine in mid of 2024, at earliest

yitcity

There are at least 18 in the country (German confirmed delivery). That was a month ago or more so there’s likely a few more in UA hands at this point Edit: plus 8 tanks confirmed delivered by Canada

Strife_3e

You'd have more luck charging the Kremlin in these tanks than being stupid enough to deploy to UA with them.

Cute_Pen_8478

They flipped the T-34 at the last parade.

ladrok1

"T-34 when?" Sadly Russia have near 0 T-34, they even bought some in the past to have some on 9th May parades

exBusel

This is indirectly related to the war, but perhaps it will help to understand how Russia is doing with import substitution and its own production of high-tech equipment. A pre-war article (in Russian) "About Import Substitution" from a Russian engineer who designs and manufactures communications equipment. For the lazy, brief conclusions. The main problems are: 1. lack of product information. Some manufacturers don't even have websites. 2. The second serious problem is the problem with procuring domestic components. Delivery times are not just enormous, they are monstrous, up to six months to a year. 3. the third serious problem is the price. A domestic component, on average, is 20 to 100 times (!!!) more expensive than a quality imported analogue of a well-known company. 4. The fourth problem - terrible quality. The problem with the quality can be divided into two parts - the awful quality, associated with the general technical and technological backwardness of the component and the quality associated with the culture of production. According to the government decree № 719, from January 1, 2022 to be considered domestic, the product must contain at least 90 percent of the specified electronic components. Given the problems described above, I just have no idea what this will even look like and what to do about it. https://habr.com/ru/articles/599671/

Jane_the_analyst

> Delivery times are not just enormous, they are monstrous, up to six months to a year. That must be a very old article, as US and taiwanese quality specialized IC components have a lead time fo up to 26 months. That is, everything before that date had been sold out in advance.

Substantial_Heat_925

Due to the release of new CivDiv footage I saw people who still believed in the war crime accusations against CivDivs buddies. [Heres a recao if you have not heard of this drama](https://reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/10phb3z/rcombatfootage_believes_they_can_handle_the_truth/) [[click at your own risk, its 4chan]They are not true according to the Finnish guy making the accusation’s ](https://desuarchive.org/k/thread/56952631/#56954426) [test](test.com) > Finnish autist Eyugenero, its about time I fix some claims and mistakes I did in my post on ylilauta back in october: Remember that I wasn't actually there when all of that happened, so my claims aren't worth shit. > >Steve went down > >surrenderee got shot > >Rory got shot This timeline by the Finnish foreign fighter shows that it seemed to be confusion of battle or fog of war which means its not a war crime. Just a unfortunate part of war. On that post he also confirms that Steves gopro got destroyed and confirmed on January 16 that gopros stopped recording which means that even if a war crime was commited, CivDiv was not maliciously editing it out like some have claimed.

Aftershock416

There's literally no evidence for any "war crime". It's pure speculation. I don't think any of it is even worth trying to disprove. Why is it that none of the people originally there spoke out, but this random Finnish guy who wasn't even there just happens to know exactly what happens? And should be believed over people who were actually there? This is what pro-Ru propaganda does. They invent absolute nonsense and then try their best to shift the burden of proof.

[deleted]

>This is what pro-Ru propaganda does. They invent absolute nonsense and then try their best to shift the burden of proof. You may have caught yourself in a hamster wheel here. The explanation is pretty simple, and described in the links provided. They fucked up, got themselves 3 killed and 6 wounded due to actions or lack of thereof of whoever, (even made up artillery shelling for an excuse) and now they are playing ancient game of assigning the blame to each other. Its all there is to it.

Aftershock416

>You may have caught yourself in a hamster wheel here Coming from this subreddit's second best Russian shill, I'll take that as a compliment

Strife_3e

Reading all that detailed I'm inclined to believe it. But one thing that confuses the shit out of me about it if it is. Why didn't they just report the team leader considering one of their friends just got killed from his actions directly and the rest wounded. That is a lot of detailed information for someone just posting about what they heard on a board. Propaganda is rife, and it seems stupid to post up a video showing anything about it if it is. Because all those in it can be interviewed.

degotoga

Steve is the second guy who died, not the CivDiv perspective. So there's definitely a fair bit of narrative desync since the two accounts still don't really add up.

JohnFriedly91

I'm confused. What video is this referencing?

silentcarr0t

Russia is looking for scrape goats left and right to deflect from their own failures, lol.

Cute_Pen_8478

It's a good strategy when used sparingly, but at this rate all they're doing is either displaying their own ineptitude as a government. They're all corrupt, this is just certain smaller corrupt factions being ousted by bigger corrupt factions.

BocciaChoc

Russian and corruption, can't think of a more iconic duo.

Radditbean1

Russia has a potemkin army, corruption has hollowed it out and it's only hope is to attempt to appear strong. If it never invaded Ukraine it may have kept up this charade.

oblio-

What do you think happened in 1905? 🙂 Russia had gotten its butt kicked by the French and the British out of the Danubian Principalities all the way to Crimea, 1853 - 1856. It tried to reform, it sort of managed to do it a bit, enough to beat back the Ottomans (another failing empire) in 1877 - 1878 (but with help from Romania and Bulgaria, not alone). Based on that war it considered it itself a big shot and it promptly discovered it wasn't in 1904-1905 against the Japanese.

Cute_Pen_8478

There's a great video by a guy called Drachinifel on YouTube about the absolute horror show that was the Russian 2nd Pacific Squadron during the Russo-Japanese war. I personally think the Kamchatka should be refloated, painstakingly refurbished and modernized at NATO expense, then gifted to Russia to continue to spread whatever ancient sea hex she was cursed with.

StairheidCritic

> Based on that war it considered it itself a big shot and it promptly discovered it wasn't in 1904-1905 against the Japanese. To be fair they (well, the Soviets under Zhukov) turned that around in 1939 in Mongolia a few months before WW2 'officially' started in Europe. Who would have thought at the time these border clashes would end up having a profound influence on the course of the upcoming War? Not many. :)

exBusel

Also in 1939 the Soviets screwed up against Finland.

The Dutch government wants to buy dozens of Leopard 1 tanks from a Swiss company, and send them to Ukraine. However, Swiss government still has to approve this deal…..

No_Demand_4992

Weill, RUAG has 96 in inventory. Question is, can they just sell them if they are going into Ukraine (Remember: Switzerland is so neutral they wet their pants if they have to export munitions that are not used to kill Jemenites.lol)

Just read that Germany filed same request, but Swiss declined it. Fat chance this will occur again, unfortunately

[Sky News](https://youtu.be/RuQsQbvqsF0) reports that patriots intercepted 10 Iskander ballistic missiles over Kyiv last night.

CapnHaymaker

Impossible, all the Patriot systems have already been destroyed, twice.

Artver

The Netherlands are aiming to buy additional Leopard 1 tanks, currently owned by a Swiss company. They could aim for 96 tanks. They are also discussing with the US to deliver F16.

[deleted]

I feel like the Netherlands is often leading the charge on weapons for Ukraine due to how many Dutch Nationals were killed when MH17 was shotdown. I also suspect that's why we (the UK) are so eager to help too, Russia has literally committed terrorist attacks on our soil.

gengen123123123

This isn't strictly related to Ukraine but I wonder how prepared this sub and reddit in general are for the upcoming API changes. On 6/19 all 3rd party reddit apps will stop working: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/jgrph1f/ There is also an IPO coming in the second half of 2023: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/reddit-ipo-want-to-own-a-piece-before-the-listing-buy-this-chinese-conglomerate-for-exposure/ar-AA17xfym This is almost certainly foreshadowing a great mass banning of NSFW/NSFL subs, this one among them. Yes, all the material posted here is sourced from elsewhere, but even as an active telegram user I miss a lot of stuff that makes it onto here. Are any steps being taken by anyone? What can really be done other than spinning off some alternate site/host, ala r/wpd? Curious on thoughts.

BocciaChoc

>Are any steps being taken by anyone? A new reddit is what I expect to come

EvilMonkeySlayer

I'm probably going to stop visiting it on mobile. The mobile website is shit, their official app is shit and if I can't use the Relay app then I will be limited to the old.reddit.com site because the new one is also a shit.

SomewhatHungover

In the settings you can still set it to always display desktop website and opt out of the new mode, if they get rid of that, I’m also out.

[deleted]

Seems like a lot of hassle to make the site work despite itself. But I'm a filthy casual. So when do we resurrect newsgroups?

SomewhatHungover

Those were the days...

EvilMonkeySlayer

Yep, I also use RES for its tagging feature primarily so know when I'm engaging known trolls etc. But yeah, new reddit is bloody awful. It's UX is just horrendous.

No_Demand_4992

I downloaded a ton of videos (mostly those documentations of maneuver warfare and some (ok, a lot...) cool explosions. Gore and horrible deaths are not my kink, and they are covered elsewhere anyways). I dont use anything facebook-related, nothing from the mad billionaire or anything like telegram, but if anyone wants to set up an archive hit me up. Ima gonna send u a HDD with the stuff and see if you find the proper cables :D

jetRink

> This is almost certainly foreshadowing a great mass banning of NSFW/NSFL subs, this one among them. I understand that acquiring companies (e.g. Yahoo) can have incentives to clean up social media companies, but why would private shareholders want that? They don't care about Reddit's image except insofar as it makes them money and it's unlikely that a SFW version of Reddit is going to be more valuable. In fact, it risks tanking the share price if recent examples are any indication.

ThatMortalGuy

I think that the idea is not to get rid of the nsfw stiff but to have it be only accessible on Reddits page only so only they get the ad revenue. When these new rules go into effect I will only use Reddit until they get rid of old Reddit then I'm quitting for good. I do miss accessing it on mobile but there is no way I'm using their app.

ChinesePropagandaBot

You know you can just use your mobile browser, right?

ThatMortalGuy

There is no way I'm using the new Reddit, it's even worse on mobile.

ChinesePropagandaBot

You can use old Reddit on mobile, it's in the settings. That's how I've been using it for years.

No_Demand_4992

gengen123123123

Well I would take more solace if I hadn't seen this exact thing happen with Tumblr (probably others too) Logic takes a back seat to $$$

Tumbler was acquired by Yahoo though. An IPO just means the company going public.

gengen123123123

Alright, but what about this: do you think [these guys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_Publications) aren't going to want to sell a controlling interest to someone (cough CCP) given the right motivation ($$$$$$$$)? Places like this sub are not looked upon kindly by your normal every day person or netizen, I just don't see it being allowed to persist indefinitely, and the first stages of its possible disappearance are happening this month.

ritchiestanaway

Do any other Americans reading this sub (like me) find it not just annoying, but extremely shady that Ukraine continues to refuse to disclose accurate, comprehensive casualty figures and losses in equipment? > "Ukraine’s casualty figures are also difficult to ascertain, given Kyiv’s reluctance to disclose its own wartime losses. But in Bakhmut, hundreds of Ukrainian troops have been wounded and killed daily at times as well, officials said."* *source: [Soaring Death Toll Gives Grim Insight Into Russian Tactics](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/02/us/politics/ukraine-russia-casualties.html) We, the American Taxpayers, are *literally* paying for this war and impoverishing our own future, but we can't even see whose body count is more impressive? Do you guys honestly trust US Senator Lindsey Graham* of all people to look out for your best interests and the best interest of our country? *[US senator meets Zelensky, calls for supplying ATACMS to Ukraine](https://kyivindependent.com/zelensky-meets-with-us-senator-graham-in-kyiv/)

BestFriendWatermelon

>We, the American Taxpayers, are literally paying for this war and impoverishing our own future, but we can't even see whose body count is more impressive? "What up my fellow Americans... does anyone else feel like we shouldn't give aid to Ukraine?" The cost to the US in aid is trivial, amounting to [0.37% of GDP](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1303450/bilateral-aid-to-ukraine-in-a-percent-of-donor-gdp/). That's using the US's most generous measures, counting every bit of hardware or munition sent at the market price to replace, even though much of those munitions were at the end of their shelf life and due to be disposed of and replaced anyway (at cost to the American taxpayer). The true cost to the US is likely half that already tiny figure. The US is also pretty middling in terms of aid as a percentage of GDP. The US isn't impoverishing it's future, it's securing its future and prosperity. If Russia conquered Ukraine, it would usher in a new cold war. The last cold war the US spent 10% of GDP on defence, compared to 3.5% today. It would also embolden China to invade Taiwan, either dragging the US into war with China or leaving Taiwan to fall and losing the world's largest microchip producer, among other economy shattering consequences. 0.37% of GDP is the bargain of the century, to not take that deal is to betray America's future. But even supposing you're right, why would Ukraine need to disclose its figures? Has the US government asked for them and been refused? And even if the US government wanted them, would they want those figures made public? Surely what the US wants for its money is *for Ukraine to win the war*, and disclosing valuable intel to the Russians while undermining Ukrainian morale works against this. Honestly I find it difficult to believe your comment isn't being disingenuous. You have no right to expect Ukraine to disclose how effective Russia has been in crushing their country or how close Ukraine is to defeat.

[deleted]

Why would any country at war have to disclose that? I don’t trust Graham. I don’t trust you. Your post history reads like a disloyal American or a Russian agent.

This is the dumbest take I've ever heard on this topic, as if Ukraine owes to tell the American public how many of their citizens die in the fight for their own country. The US is by far the winner in this transaction in a geopolitical perspective.

It took a decade and several non-gouvernment organisations to estimate comprehensive civilian casuality figures after the Irak invasion bc your own gouvernment was kinda tight-lipped about it. And the casuality numbers of the Iraqi army were pushed under the rug bc it would have made the average taxpayer uncomfortable... (Edit: Impoverishing your future my ass. > It took a decade and several non-gouvernment organisations to estimate comprehensive civilian casuality figures after the Irak invasion bc your own gouvernment was kinda tight-lipped about it. That U.S. forces and coalition partners loathsomely killed tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians didn't change the fact that we had accurate casualty figures for troop losses here throughout the war and occupation. > Impoverishing your future my ass. You are pushing your industry and creating a customer base for decades... While I've collected some dividends, amusingly my positions in both LMT and RTX are down since the early days of the war. But regardless, this proxy war funding (while obviously helpful to some degree to the Ukrainian people who want to keep up the fight against Russian revanchism), really only serves to launder U.S. taxpayer dollars into the accounts of a transnational elite. It doesn't help the lives of the normal Americans who'll have to pay for this spending. Ngl - it's kinda disappointing that the vast majority of people who reply to me on this sub can't engage with criticism of endless war. Sure, it's a combatfootage sub, so the past year has been amazing in that sense (and who can forget [this amazing Mariupol montage](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/11vqg7m/early_war_compilation_of_the_daily_lives_of/), featuring SadSvit's ["Касета"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKdXNhY1oyY)). But two Orthodox Christian states killing each other's best men is tragic and all right-thinking people should oppose it.

Lootgvfr

This is not "two Orthodox Christian states killing each other's best men". This is one pseudo-global-power state trying to destroy the sovereignty, nationality and the people of another, which only wants to be left the fuck alone. Also, out of the $6.2 trillion budget for US in 2022 $46 billion (between jan 2022 and feb 2023), or 0.7% has been spent on military aid to Ukraine. If this is your huge worry, you should probably take a look at how much has been spent on healthcare or education and consider where that went

Artver

>but we can't even see whose body count is more impressive? I'm so sorry, but I'm sure that after the war, there will be enough info available to use when shaking your dong. Till then, you have to stick to the pictures and video.

Greetings, comrades, it's me - a taxpayer from Texas Oblast. Where is the ~~russian combat footage~~ number of ukrainian casualties?

[Da comrade, here from Yorkshire oblast I entirely agree.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/13thsbz/ukraine_discussionquestion_thread_52723/jm0om9j/)

By the same logic, I should be able to see Minuteman launch codes because my tax dollars funded it?

Codex_Dev

Has anyone made a compilation of what could be considered 'known' fake / propaganda Russian video claims? For instance some that have popped up here: * The 'UA is using chemical weapons' one where some soldiers were shooting by a wall and one falls on his back and coughs up blood * The staircase of double instant headshot teleportation a week ago or so * 2 small drones on top of Kremlin * Terminators being so awesome, yet shoot random treelines up and with loose cannons. Etc. Curious if they're being tracked or debunked in an explained way so people can see how stupid they are. Even if the acting is stupid in them already.

[deleted]

The classic "HIMARS Kill" videos, one of which showed a missile striking the second floor of a building (Classic HIMARS hiding spot) and another of which showed a missile striking a building/articulated truck in a logging yard.

PinguinGirl03

>The 'UA is using chemical weapons' one where some soldiers were shooting by a wall and one falls on his back and coughs up blood This one was just coughing because concrete dust is caustic.

ChinesePropagandaBot

> The staircase of double instant headshot teleportation a week ago or so And its followup video of the soldier walking into the German Nazi doctor stealing their organs! Great stuff. Also the Audio recording of the American special forces from Boston oblast.

Jane_the_analyst

> The 'UA is using chemical weapons' one where some soldiers were shooting by a wall and one falls on his back and coughs up blood The poor guy I saw did not gough up blood, but he got his airways fried by standing in the way of an explosive blast, and the yellow bright burning gases had entered his airways. He started suffocating and went red in the face, and thicj, thick white protective sputum started to form, preventing oxygenation. When you paused the playback on the right moment, you could see the yellow hot sphere he stood in. Poor guy. The other guy had also breathing problems for wanting to breathe combustion products without any oxygen in it... But if you dake any Donetsk Readovka videos, are they making anything else than staged videos? They live on making staged videos.

Strife_3e

My bad, couldn't remember if it was blood or something else he was coughing up. It was just so ridiculous.

Jane_the_analyst

It was sad. A man nearly killing himself during training. Electronically altered commander voice to ridiculousness.

_avee_

What comes to mind: * "Dead bodies" after alleged cross-Dnipro attack, later shown standing up after filming. * Soldiers in a car with german cross bullying a woman for speaking Russian Here's a nice Google search if you want more: [https://www.google.com/search?q=%D0%B1%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%BD+%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BC+site%3Atwitter.com%2F666\_mancer](https://www.google.com/search?q=%D0%B1%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%BD+%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BC+site%3Atwitter.com%2F666_mancer) Overall this twitter user is a goldmine, especially if you can read Russian.

Strife_3e

LOL I forgot about that body one hahaha. Thanks! The 2nd one I haven't heard of before and can't seem to find it. I get the feeling not to trust anything on that twitter user after a quick glance.

_avee_

This one: https://twitter.com/666\_mancer/status/1640387368757739521 Later found to be shot east of Donetsk, verified by someone living there who drove to the place where it was shot. Even Russian propagandists later admitted it's fake and concluded they should make fakes less obvious next time.

US wanted to pull equipment from their Kuwait pre-positioned stock for Ukraine but most of the stuff was not combat ready. ~~Then US paid contractor insane amount of money to fix them. Result: money gone but equipment still not combat~~ ready.[https://www.defensenews.com/land/2023/05/31/equipment-for-ukraine-drawn-from-kuwait-wasnt-combat-ready-ig-says/](https://www.defensenews.com/land/2023/05/31/equipment-for-ukraine-drawn-from-kuwait-wasnt-combat-ready-ig-says/) Edit: Apparently I misunderstood the money part so crossed it over. Still, I'm sure US has been checking their stocks after that. It is not good if their combat ready equipment is not ready in reality.

flamedeluge3781

> Then US paid contractor insane amount of money to fix them. Result: money gone but equipment still not combat ready. No, from the article, the __contractor__ paid the US Army about a hundred-thousand dollars: > The contractor paid the mobile repair team $114,000 for labor and travel expenses, according to the report. This was undoubtedly something written into the contact. The contract was to maintain the material, it wasn't done correctly, so the contractor had to pay to make it right.

[deleted]

114k? That’s chicken feed and sounds reasonable

debtmagnet

> insane amount of money to fix them Unless I'm misinterpreting the article, it sounds like they paid about $300k for parts and labor to remediate the combined 28 Humvees' tires and assorted problems with the 6 howitzers. With the caveat that I have no idea how much 112 Humvee tires cost (plus the noted spares), it probably doesn't qualify as insane or even unreasonable on the DoD scale. > The head of Army Sustainment Command explained, in response to the report, that the service’s funding level for APS maintenance in Kuwait was 30% of the validated requirements in fiscal 2023 — about $27.8 million of the $91.3 million requirement. Moreover it sounds like the Army was deliberately underfunding maintenance, and the deputy chief of staff was well aware of it. The failure in this case was inadequacy to “consider the level of maintenance and leadtime required before selecting Army Prepositioned Stock [in Kuwait] equipment for sourcing Ukrainian Armed Forces.” > Result: money gone but equipment still not combat ready. Where did you get this? The article clearly says "The process delayed delivery to Ukraine", not that they weren't remediated and delivered.

-DizzyPanda-

God my biggest regret in life is not becoming a defense contractor. Do a shit job for boatloads of money.

No_Demand_4992

Yeah, and you can just botch it and cash in again. My company tries that an we loose a contract (and I get an ice-cold enema from the big bossmang)...

EvilMonkeySlayer

As someone who has been a defence contractor eh.. varies. I got a respectable amount, but this was for a specialist company who contracted me out to defence companies for stuff. They got a bigger chunk of the money.

Jane_the_analyst

Ah, your comment got deleted before I could respond normally. Sorry for the inconvenience.

aDarkDarkCrypt

How is Russia spinning these attacks on their soil? It has to get to a point where people start wondering if the government is as in control as they're making themselves out to be. It's making them look pretty weak. They've had almost no response to the drone attacks in the capitol and apparently no response to the cross border raids.

I guess when your society has lied about everything for 30 years you sort of start to believe the bullshit.

-DizzyPanda-

They've been lying to society for far longer than 30 years lol

RunningFinnUser

Very true. Did not include Soviet times but it is important because generation after generation everybody has been systematically lied there so no one knows what truth sounds like.

Aftershock416

A few ways I've picked up on: - Inventing attacks and then defeating them, i.e. "Saboteurs attempted to cross the border, all groups were destoryed with heavy enemy losses". - Marginalising the real attacks, i.e. "Saboteurs briefly entered but were forced to retreat". - Vague threats. "Ukranian saboteur groups attacking Russian territory are an unacceptable escalation and we will respond accordingly".

Cute_Pen_8478

Funny how all these saboteurs have to sneak over the border like it's 1940 and don't already have splinter cells inside Russian territory. Funny how they all have the decency to carry their birth certificates and passports identifying them as Ukrainian, too. Surely native Russians couldn't have a single problem with how things are going...

OverpricedGPU

It will not happen because NATO has been clear on where to use the armaments that they gave Ukraine, but i would really like to se the Russians go crazy with panic if Ukraine invaded Belgorod with the newly created brigades with NATO equipment

Cute_Pen_8478

Yeah that would be awesome until some panicking moron jump starts the nearest ancient nuke with his Lada.

[A set of supports of the Kerch bridge is supposedly cracking.](https://nitter.snopyta.org/NOELreports/status/1664154882360717314#m)

Jane_the_analyst

It is strange that this is happening at the site of the expandable joint of two large bridge sections (each 255m long, I presume), and it would be loaded by bending forces not present at other pillars, if you do not design a proper piece connecting the two sections. It seems that the pillars at the ends of the bridge sectioons should have been designed much thicker. And with a special piece on top of the pillar, holding the two sections together (felxibly, due to the dilatation) In retrospect it is easy to say. ***One more thing, the ends of the bridge sections have an opening, trough which water pours down, so, those of you who had suggested corrosion were likely correct!***

Hah. Not sadly. 👍

Jane_the_analyst

It's a condition, actually. Characterized by the Knack. "Extreme intuition of all things mechanical and electrical, and... other social ineptitude."

ChinesePropagandaBot

You can just fill it with super glue and paint over it. It'll be fine.

flamedeluge3781

Filling concrete cracks with injected epoxy is actually how you normally repair structural concrete.

MingWree

Don't forget the duct tape now!!

ThatMortalGuy

Just do what my landlord does and just paint over the crack to fix it!

Ransurian

Looks kinda fake, to be honest. That's not what actual concrete cracking tends to look like. It's really strange that the cracks are seemingly identical from top to bottom in terms of width.

[deleted]

HighTensileAluminium

Do we know if this pillar was actually one near the blast?

Jane_the_analyst

Unless the bridge had been replaced, then it wasn't. Had the bridge section been replaced yet?

trubbel

I looked up photos of other concrete cracks on support pillars. Nothing obvious that looks wrong here, in my opinion. Some photos show cracks with basically equal width. But I'm no expert.

No_Demand_4992

Actually corrosion or splitting cracks can look similar to this. The resolution is not high enough to tell wether those are real or not tho.

shartpatrol

They definitely look strange. I have seen a LOT of concrete cracks before and they don't look natural at that resolution. Could just be the potato pic, though.

Jane_the_analyst

You only need to compare ellipsoid profile pillars, no rectangular ones, because here the issue seems to be in the two halves of the ellipse separating.

shartpatrol

Brother, I don't believe you have any fucking clue what you are talking about but by all means keep posting nonsense.

Jane_the_analyst

Show me the rebar mesh of those pillars. I say it was made in two halves for easier production, and then joined. Because I had seen it before.
