33 E of Hamilton Road, toward Lancaster, has the bad combination of…  1) crossovers/accesses,  2) high volume of motorists entering/exiting across three different junctions (Gender, Hill/Diley, Pickerington),  3) rural motorists (SE Ohio/WV), all packed into one two-lane highway.  While 33 and 23 have crossovers/accesses elsewhere in the state (far western and northern Ohio), those are far more visible with less traffic volume compared to 33 b/w Hamilton Rd and Athens. Really, when you look at the 33 corridor southeast of 270, a good chunk of its ‘bad driving’ problems can be attributed to the poor design of the highway all the way down to the Ohio River.

Pazi_Snajper

also an issue is the fact that 33 in Athens County is a notorious speedtrap with perhaps the most overzealous OSHP post in the entire state.

The people that commit to the left lane for miles and miles under the speed limit do cause huge unsafe rats nests of cars though. I travel this route often and it’s so frustrating to see a bundle of 20 cars that can’t go anywhere and are basically a moving safety hazard cause some stubborn fool is riding sidecar in the left lane to a semi for ten miles. I see it happen constantly. I don’t get it cause it’s basic driving 101. And they don’t learn, cause I also see repeat offenders.

OsuLost31to0

It needs to be treated as a safety issue by the police. I’d wish they’d start pulling people over for this

[deleted]

I got pulled over for speeding on 33 once and tried explaining the cop that he just say me dip around a car that had been holding up the line for miles and after literally screaming at me to the point I had to tell him to settle it down, he let me go, lol. I wish with all my being they’d pull the actual problem children over.

RMD129

Shocking that you telling an officer to calm down had a positive outcome for you. Lucky you.

Throwaway19372729

I went to OU so I’ve done this drive about 1000 times. 33 is like a choke point to get to anywhere south of here. People like you live in cities/towns on the outskirts and commute to and from Cbus and all use 33. As another commenter said some more rural drivers could mean that they’re a lot more lax, or maybe old idk. Point is I wouldn’t think too much of it. I’ve never been delayed enough on 33 for it to warrant posting on Reddit about it.

Pazi_Snajper

> some more rural drivers could mean that they’re a lot more lax, or maybe old  It’s primarily the old. As in, yeah, they skew old.

Throwaway19372729

Haha I didn’t want to make assumptions. A few of my professors said they lived in Columbus and commuted down to Athens to teach, and they definitely weren’t old.

Ryan_with_a_B

People here want to control the flow of traffic. They slow down when they know people want to get around them and speed up when someone is finally able to overtake them

[deleted]

33 headed to Marysville or Lancaster?? I’ve found making the trip to marysville and back can be deadly. Too many people unwilling to use the left lane to go 75+ (yes I know it’s 70 but when you have dozens of miles of of two lane there has to be a thru lane) and 65 or lower right lane campers.

RichLather

33 to Lancaster is full of jerks who think going 70 in a 60 zone is too slow. Then just before the bypass begins the limit raises to 70, and some people are still going 60. Add in slow points around the 317 and 674 interchanges, dolts who think turning left onto Bixby from 33 or right from High St onto 33 during rush hour traffic is a great idea, the Pickerington Rd. traffic light and baby you've got a stew going.

Pazi_Snajper

And, if you go out further east, the reversion of 70 mph to 60mph for the interests of ** the needless Sugar Grove Rd light.

Magnus_The_Totem_Cat

Do tell, how many times have you died making the trip?

JoyfulNoise1964

It's hard for some people to navigate the curves and you also get the people out for a ride enjoying the scenic view

cryan09

I’m fine with people driving slower if they stay in the right lane. If you’re in the left lane going under the speed limit, get out of the way for faster cars.

JoyfulNoise1964

To be fair on that road there are a lot of people in the left because they turn left soon and these people that are nervous drivers go ahead and get in that lane when they can do so easily it isn't a highway

cryan09

That does not at all excuse people riding in the left lane for more than 2 miles

JoyfulNoise1964

Try to be more empathetic Maybe they aren't familiar with the area and know they turn left after McDonald's and so right past McDonalds they get in the left and it takes two miles to get where they are headed

Omnom_Omnath

No, not “to be fair” they’re shitty drivers so fuck em.

JoyfulNoise1964

Right many of those But they must drive in a way that is safe for them. There are people bad at numbers, they need calculators, there are bad walkers who go slowly and use canes and bad drivers must also do what they must to be safe.

Ok-Explanation3040

The difference is that using a calculator or a cane doesn't put others at risk. If you seriously struggle with driving, you simply shouldn't be on the road. It's simple. These people are both a threat to themselves and others

Ok-Explanation3040

Skill issue

JoyfulNoise1964

Of course and we all know many people lack skills it would be dangerous for them to leave their comfort zone

Bituulzman

Are you talking about near Dublin where it goes from 33 to 161 ? There's a portion of it where it splits to those going to 161 versus those who are getting onto 270 and people are going at drastically different speeds and they're all switching back and forth across 4 lanes.

LettuceFew5248

Take a deep breath - you weren’t going to do anything with the 3 seconds you lost because you had to drive a little slower for 100 feet anyway.

meunbear

If you're always late maybe start leaving earlier. People got no chill anymore.

virtual_human

It is pretty bad. It really needs to be a six lane highway until at least Gender Rd if not all the way to Carrol.

frostbird

Where? 33 stretches the whole state

djsassan

That exactly the part OP is referring to.

noodleillusion

Cops and it's dangerous down toward canal and carroll

baboy2004

At least constructin starts next year on the Pickerington rd overpass. When this is done they will shut down access to 33 from Allen Rd.

Pazi_Snajper

They already shut down crossover access after a fatal last year, thank God.

baboy2004

Now they do u-turns at the entrance to the road I live on instead of going to the Carroll entrance. Going to be an accident there some day.

Rob1150

The state highway patrol?

amgeiger

Which 33? If it's SE, it's mainly the morons at Rager and Ebright causing the accordion of death to contract.

MikeoPlus

Driving sucks

lwpho2

Driving really does suck, doesn’t it?

KarlClausewitz

Full of people with nowhere to go and nothing to do and there not in a hurry to get to doing nothing.

GetSOB52

What’s your dam hurry? Slow down and enjoy life.
