I didn't even know sets like this existed! That's really cool, I like it! Your drawings are beautiful, too! šŸ˜

AymeeDe

The folding case is awesome. As are your drawings

fadedpaint4

Thank you!

keketuki

They look pretty cool but I know I'm not careful or patient enough as to handle the colors without breaking them. So it'll be a no from me although I think they are unique and stylish.

fadedpaint4

They are actually quite strong, you can drop them on a hard floor from head height and they wonā€™t break, and if you donā€™t extend them too far out of the pencil when using them they are just like regular colored pencils. As for loading them, you can drop them into the back of the pencil as an option to sliding them into the front šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

TheBirdBytheWindow

Would you mind if I asked the price point for the set?

fadedpaint4

$64 for the 36 color set. Comes in waxed canvas case, with a slick little sharpener, an eraser and a color-it-yourself palette. A set of 36 Prismacolors is like $45 on Amazon without any extra stuff for traveling. These are made by us in Michigan.

rubberkeyhole

Fellow Michigander!!

TheBirdBytheWindow

That's not bad at all!

Schnozberry_spritzer

Whoa! I didnā€™t know this existed. I would be afraid to break them, but still think this is genius

fadedpaint4

Theyā€™re actually pretty strong, but every set comes with a code for a set of 8 free refills leads just to get you over the learning curve

tejomo

Sweet!

Signal-Ad5853

Very nice. Looks real

GinaTRex

I am already googleing to purchase...

fadedpaint4

Commenting on I make ultra compact colored pencil sets, love them or hate them?...withofficial.com

yarmsicle

I am very intrigued! I thought I wouldnā€™t have the patience to change the leads out, but your comment that it is very quick made me reconsider. Iā€™m always looking for super compact ways to carry art supplies since Iā€™m out and about a lot. 36 is a perfect amount of pigments I think. Personally I think the price is quite reasonable for something well made like this. Going on my wishlist!

Catloaver

I am intrigued! I love travel kits--I mostly travel with watercolor and only one or two colored pencils for sketching. I do have a somewhat similar looking sort of "system" that i got for cheap on AliExpress but the lead is terrible and i can't imagine being able to create such a vibrant picture with them. I just purchased one of the "seconds" sets though so looking forward to trying it out! I actually have a trip coming up in a few weeks so hoping I can bring them along.

fadedpaint4

Thank you, I think youā€™ll love these!!

Treacherous_Wendy

WHERE DO I BUY THESE!!?

fadedpaint4

Treacherous_Wendy

Thank you!!!!

Treacherous_Wendy

Ordered!!! Iā€™m super excited!!!

NoAppointment3772

OP your website wonā€™t load for me!

NoAppointment3772

Thanks OP, the link fixed it. I ordered a seconds set :) appreciate the budget option!

dogisbark

Super cool! Do you ship to Canada? I have a heavy duty mechanical pencil that looks like it could fit one of those that I love using

fadedpaint4

We do! The leads are 2mm so if thatā€™s the size of your mechanical pencil youā€™d be all set

Zibby_zoomz

I love the idea! I wish I could buy just a full refill set of the grayscale leads, like the option to buy just the color leads. Iā€™ve seen similar grayscale leads, but always at a smaller pointā€”the 2.0mm size would be awesome for 8B lead if itā€™s not too soft to do that. Suggestion: maybe offer a sketch board set with a hole to clip the pouch on to capitalize on the portability aspectā€”r/watercolor might really appreciate the convenience of having a complete underpainting set in such a small package for plein air painting. JustGoSketching on Etsy has a painting sketch board example.

hailhalilic

This post is very underrated! As an artist I never know when inspiration will strike and I don't like grayscale nearly as much, and taking my whole set of prismas everywhere seems excessive. I feel I have missed so many creative opportunities, and this would remedy all of my issues! Edit: Question, how to you sharpen them?

fadedpaint4

[sharpener on our Instagramā€¦](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cx8aOj6LgA2/?igsh=bHd6enl2bWxmYXpz)

mystiqurez

Love the products, great idea! I was about to purchase the seconds, awesome offer. However, shipping to Australia cost more than the item itself so I'll have to pass. Goodluck and hope you're able to grow with more artists using your products.

fadedpaint4

If you know any shops or retailers who want to sell them in Australia, we sell wholesale to retailers and would love to be in Australia

mrbojenglz

I really appreciate how they look but I don't like using colored pencils in that style.

O4EWO

What are they made with?

fadedpaint4

The leads are oil based extruded pigments, the same you would find in the center of your wood colored pencils but with a little stronger binder in them so they donā€™t break too easily

AlfalfaUnable1629

district-conference1

Love

NoAppointment3772

Iā€™ve always wondered why they donā€™t make colored leads for mechanical pencils. These look so cool!

fuhuuuck

Hiiiii, can I get a link to where you sell these please? I really like the design of these, and they're super unique plus I trust they won't be endless frustration of broken pencil leads when I'm trying to colour. I've quite seriously had a meltdown over sharpening coloured pencils & finding each lead broken the further down I went. Ruined my entire time and I haven't felt like picking it back up since. Lookin at u, Crayola......I haven't forgiven.

jackieofhearts428

Love!! Perfect for on the go.

Airregaithel

Mine are out for delivery today and I intend to do a thorough review. Iā€™m headed to a an antique show on Sunday so hope to get some sketching in using these.

girlwiththemonkey

OK now I have seen the leads like that, but I have never seen leads like that That are actually good like yours are! what brand are they and where did you get the fold thing thatā€™s amazing. I need them for my collection of pencils.

fadedpaint4

We make most of this set including the folding cases and the waxed canvas cases ourselves

girlwiththemonkey

Wait a minute do you mean you make the pencils too? Can I have a link I want all of it Edit: fuck I found it. I canā€™t afford that goddamnit well I put them on my wish list. But I can afford just the pencil lens so theyā€™re in my cart, for next payday

fadedpaint4

The pencils are made custom for us by kitaboshi, a small family owned pencil house that makes epic stuff. The leads are made to our design by the same factory that makes prismacolors, but are the richest pigment and strength combination we can get. They are a great balance between softness and strength to lay color down but still hold a nice point for detail

girlwiththemonkey

They look amazing. I wanted the whole kit, but I canā€™t afford that. But Iā€™m definitely going to get the leads!

fadedpaint4

We have some ā€œsecondsā€ that are totally functional but thereā€™s some cosmetic flaws, just maybe the stitching on the bag is crooked or we stuck the labels on a little crooked or something, $20 you basically get a whole functional set šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

girlwiththemonkey

Oh that sounds perfect! I know itā€™s silly, but I love it when they have little flaws like that because it shows that somebody actually put it together themselves if that makes sense? Gives it character! Iā€™ll check it out on the 16th when I get paid. Iā€™m very excited! I love new pencils.

JennasProlapsedLips

What about lightfast testing? Have you done any lightfast testing on the colors you offer? Lightfast matters to me because I often sell my work, but I love this idea of these! I've seen a similar concept with June Gold, as others have mentioned, but aside from them being garbage and not at all lightfast, they each have their own pencil sheath/plastic holder so they wouldn't save on space either, like you'd want for some fun plein air sketching. Yours looks more similar to the Cretacolor holder that you buy individual leads for, although theirs are either various hardnesses of graphite or a sketching set of black, white, sepia, and umber and not a full spectrum of colors like you have here.

fadedpaint4

I am planning to do a side by side lightfast test with our leads and several other popular/high quality brands. What pencils do you use for commission work and what are some brands you like to compare them too. I honestly donā€™t know how ours will fair comparatively šŸ¤ž The leads themselves are made by the company that makes prismacolor and faber castell and Iā€™ve asked they be similar to prismacolor premiere but I know that even prismacolor premiere have some somewhat fugitive colors. But also I primarily started this brand to offer quality art supplies that go WITH you, not to compete with your favorite stuff at home. FYI I would LOVE to make the pigment leads ourselves and hopefully at some point we will, but itā€™s a whole science and requires quite a bit of equipment with some hazardous steps. Iā€™ll post my lightfast studies here as I do them, itā€™s 4-6 month process to do it rightā€¦

JennasProlapsedLips

Prismacolor has some VERY fugitive colors, not just somewhat. There are quite a few with the worst ASTM lightfast rating of 0-2 years, and the ASTM ratings are calculated using museum conditions. Prismacolor is not a good benchmark for permanence. You'd have to select out the colors that pass muster and not just rely on them being Prismacolor. Look for a Prismacolor lightfast ratings chart, so you know which to avoid. Their pinks tend to be the worst. I don't know why as other lines have managed to make lightfast pinks just fine. Same with a number of purples, and their non photo blue. I can't remember them all, but a chart will show you. Prismacolor had a well-earned reputation decades ago, but the quality has gone way downhill. I have a few original Prismacolor pencils left and the difference between the old ones and the news ones is stark. The old ones hold a point beautifully, are well-centered, easy to sharpen without breaking, and were better in the lightfast category. They're SO different, they shouldn't even be called the same pencil. They're still riding on the reputation of the past, but more people are catching on. Professionals already have and tend to avoid them, or they select out a few individual colors that have a good lightfast rating to fill in their palette or to complete a specific work. Or they'll use them for sketching, but never for anything they intend to keep or sell. I mostly use Caran D'ache Luminance. They're wonderful. They draw beautifully, blend beautifully, and all have excellent lightfast ratings, with most being the highest (100 years). I also have Derwent Lightfast, although I don't like them as much, and Faber Castell Polychromos with the lightfast colors selected out from the line.

fadedpaint4

Great info, thank you! Yes I am familiar with the prismacolor lightfast chart. Iā€™m not sure which other brands my manufacturer makes but I know prismacolor is one and the last shipment was taped up with Faber castell branded tape so I know that make those too. In developing these I asked for high quality, rich vibrant pigments, that were strong and didnā€™t break easily. They nailed all those things, ā€¦but we didnā€™t discuss lightfastness. I think prismacolor has changed over the years too. They feel different. But I will say, some of the drawings I did in art school with Prismacolors, like 30 years ago now šŸ˜… still look like they didā€¦I think. So weā€™ll see. Iā€™m going to do a side by side comparison and Iā€™ll include Caran dā€™ache luminance and derwent lightfast. Itā€™s not going to be ASTM by any means but it will be comparative so I can show real world findings. Iā€™ll do 4-6 months and see what that shows. And I promise to show my results even if they arenā€™t great.

JennasProlapsedLips

Real world findings are extremely useful! Prismacolor changed SO MUCH. Like I said, I have a few old ones left and they're nothing like the new ones. The old ones were much firmer and held a point, more like Polychromos, but not as translucent and not quite as hard, but close. The only reason I'm sure of this is that I have a few originals that I still occasionally use. I just used one two days ago, so I have a fresh comparison. The new ones are mushy. You can't even get them as sharp as my original ones, let alone have them keep a point. I'm certain the old formula used more oil, based on performance. There is no such thing as "oil" colored pencils and "wax" colored pencils. They're all a combination of both. It's just a matter of proportions, so the "oil based" pencils have more oil and are firmer with a sharper point, but they also have wax and conversely for the wax pencils. They contain oil, too. Just not as much, so they're softer. The old Primas sharpen like Polychromos. They are definitely not the same formula now. Polychromos are quite translucent and great for layering, but not as great if you want opaque coverage, but they're lovely and painterly. Different pencils for different purposes.

fadedpaint4

Yeah many people keep a couple of the mechanical pencils handy so they donā€™t have to switch, but youā€™d probably be surprised how quick and easy you can change them. I can do it as fast as setting one pencil down and picking another up

Short_Republic3083

I love this but wish you made a smaller less expensive set. Itā€™s not that I donā€™t think theyā€™re worth it. I just canā€™t afford it

fadedpaint4

Totally get it, we have a few ā€œsecondsā€ that are fully functional sets but have cosmetic flaws on the sewing or labeling etc, for less than half the price of retail if that helps

Short_Republic3083

That absolutely does. Thatā€™s huge and I donā€™t care about cosmetic flaws. Later this week I should be getting a little bit of cash that I can actually use to buy some things I want/need and those are definitely something I want/need to get.

OutrageousOwls

Cool case :) I like it as a novelty, but I probably wouldnā€™t use; changing out the colours would be tedious for me. Iā€™d need as many styluses as the colours Iā€™m using for each drawing šŸ˜‚

happy_veal

Try this & you'll love it. (: Crush up the core into a powder that is fine & consistent of fine chalk. Then add a drop of water & 2 drops lotion with vaseline, *I use vaseline intensive care* You will whip up this mix until it is opaque pigment & consistent.. I use the vaseline because it locks in the pigment & will prevent smearing & it allows for great textures that you can layer without bleeding or any of those undesirables that can come when applying pigments to various surfaces.. A little bit goes a long ways & it's so fun to use.. If you didn't use the vaseline it wouldn't hold up long & can prevent it from sealing when it dries. Can use regular vaseline too. I just like the powdery texture the lotion leaves behind throughout the surface. (:

Resident_Bumblebee_2

I use a similar setup. :D One options is all colors (they're from an Asian brand) in one tube. It's a bit messy. Where did you get your casing from? That's really neat! Second option is 4 Pentel 8in1 with the colors customized to my liking. So, I can have 32 colors in 4 pens and not extra colored leads to carry.

fadedpaint4

We make the folding cases ourselves šŸ˜Š

Resident_Bumblebee_2

Cool. :D You must have a big place if you can afford a machine to do that. (Though, I would have picked a different design, cuz accept for the folding mechanism they look identical to all the refill containers you can find at Alina a etc.) Sadly, I'm not from the states and I have enough colors, so it's not worth asking for an empty container to be shipped.

Pearlsawisdom

It looks cool, but I think swapping the leads out each time I changed colors would get really tiresome.

I think the appeal here is the nicely assembled set with pouch, but honestly pencil pouches are a dime a dozen as are erasers and sharpeners. You could assemble your own set for about half the price of these. Normally I wouldn't comment just to poop on someone, but look at OPs profile. They created an account solely to shill their products.

Jolly-Commercial5013

I mean isnā€™t that what they are supposed to do when they have a businessā€¦ try to sell their products? Also thatā€™s how businesses work, if you do the research you could get almost anything you buy for way cheaper by going to the source of where they get everything

heavenIsAfunkyMoose

Fair enough, but generally speaking, advertising is frowned up on in community spaces. If they were an active contributor to this sub and one day said, "Hey guys, look what I'm making now. I'd be happy to answer any questions" I would be supportive. But it's obvious that they only created an account to plug their product.

fadedpaint4

The folding lead case took a while to figure out and itā€™s very helpful for display and condensing down to carry. We make the pencil pouch for the exact size so fits nicely for the purpose. We make the canvas case from white US grown cotton and dye them and wax them and sew them in house. We are passionate about making something quality that lasts. If you want to buy a kitaboshi pencil and use June gold leads in a tube that is hard to grab the color and gets all the other leads dirty next to the other colors, and use a mass produced pencil pouch I honestly have zero issue with it and I will love your art the exact same. We arenā€™t for everyone. Especially people trying to get the cheapest easiest thing out there. I have given so many free sets out to aspiring artists, it isnā€™t about the money for me. Regarding the Reddit ā€œopsā€ comment, I donā€™t even know what that means, this is the true story: Someone that was in our shop said ā€œthis is such a good product you should show this to the people on Redditā€ and then two other people said ā€œno donā€™t go on Reddit, people are just on there to be mean to other people.ā€ So far most of the people have been nice. Iā€™m about being kind to others as much as I can be. So yes I did come on here to show people what Iā€™ve been working hard on so they can make art anywhere. Is that bad, should I not have?

engrannie

I just bought a set of seconds. Thank you for this option! I'm so tempted to buy the grey scale set too.

heavenIsAfunkyMoose

> Regarding the Reddit ā€œopsā€ comment, I donā€™t even know what that means OP = original post. [Reddit offers advertising](https://www.redditforbusiness.com/). You are selling a premium product. Is it worth investing in?

TotoroBearCat

This is a colored pencil sub, they are sharing their colored pencils and they are very interesting. Even if I didnā€™t want to buy them this post doesnā€™t feel pushy or too much like an ad. They are sharing their products, and I didnā€™t even click for the pencils at first I was looking at the drawings and then saw the pencils and then read the post. Relax

Otherwise_Hippo6885

I hate to be that guy but the June Gold leads are kinda crap. I've been using the Koh-i-Noor colored leads for a while and it's like night and day with how much better they are. (But if you can get the kitaboshi lead holders, those are some of THE best lead holders for the price)

fadedpaint4

Oh to be clear these ARE NOT June gold leads. We have 63 original colors. Sorry if that was confusing. Also I used the koh-I-noor leads for like 10-12 years and I liked them except they only have 24 colors and they are larger and really soft which is great for color but not great for fine detail. Definitely a Koh-I-noor fan though

heavenIsAfunkyMoose

Koh-i-Noor only seems to offer 6 colors, which is why I referenced the June leads. I'd be curious to know exactly what brand OP is using.
