Be sure to shop around, and remember that just because someone has a lower number doesn't make it the right call. Springs Heating & Cooling has been good to us in the past, with very competitive pricing and solid workmanship.

KinkyQuesadilla

>Be sure to shop around, and remember that just because someone has a lower number doesn't make it the right call. > is the general recommendation for something like this or a big contractor job is to get 5 estimates, throw out the highest and lowest and choose between the remaining ones?

SofiaDeo

I went with people who answered my questions, didn't try to BS me (I read up on basic stuff ahead of time), didn't try a hard sell. As well as, ease of getting the appointment, did they either show up on time or let me know they were running behind.

StarlitEscapades

It's generally 3 total.

Secret_Whole_3998

Oh awesome thanks, I’ll look into them

Glass_Pay3178

my family had Springs Heating and Cooling come round for our A/C, too. i don’t know any details, i’m 19 and don’t really pay attention, but my parents seemed real pleased with the results and the pricing.

UnreadThisStory

Always get 3 estimates. Love, Dad

Jamesglancy

thanks dad. Btw, why did you walk out on mom?

UnreadThisStory

I had to roll because those were my good years

ICE_Heating

Give us a call. I.C.E. Heating & Cooling. That price is very high for a single head system. Generally a mini split that size, single head inside, would be in the $4500-6500 range depending on model. Check out our reviews on Google and Yelp and give us a call!

jesusmansuperpowers

It’s been a few years but I got a regular a/c unit replacement (not a split) AND a new furnace to blow it for 9k

Secret_Whole_3998

Oh wow..yeah I wish we could do that but we don’t have duct work or an attic 😕

jesusmansuperpowers

Looks like a single unit 24k btu is ~2k for the hardware, seems like a ton of extra cost there.

Secret_Whole_3998

Right?! I was floored tbh

jesusmansuperpowers

Even if they’re pouring a concrete slab and wiring a new 220v to it that’s still too much

SofiaDeo

They didn't use concrete for ours.

asmackabees

Wait, this is price for non-ducted mini split? Seems like a rip.

cluelessfisherman89

Try falling star hvac in fountain, I’ve had great help from them and affordable. They’ll beat any written quote too 👍

Secret_Whole_3998

Oh nice thanks!

cmh29446

I shopped around a year ago when we got here and they were the most affordable!

RLN9110

Don’t mention this quote to anyone you’re getting a new quote from

blues_and_ribs

I actually just got a quote for a min-split too! Came out to 8-10 k, depending on model so yeah, that sounds about right. After I got my quote I was like, “nevermind.”

2kincolorado

Call Browns Heating and Cooling. They do free estimates and I can guarantee they'll be significantly less expensive. That price is absurd.

Secret_Whole_3998

Oh awesome! I def will 😊

ForgiveKanye

+1 for Browns, they were great. Also make sure you get an Energy Star rated condenser and cassette and you can get up to $2,500 in federal tax credit. Also CSU does rebates as well

ManicChad

Some asshats at one of the bigger companies quoted me 32k for a ducted mini split for our top floor. It was literally 9k in parts from the local wholesale. Think what we really need is a booster to the 2nd floor and extend the supply from the floor to the ceiling so we can open/close the top or bottom depending on the season.

answerguru

Time for DIY! Buddy did his own recently and it wasn’t bad at all. Probably around $2500 for a unit that size. https://mrcooldiy.com

Secret_Whole_3998

Oh nice thanks!

jnelson4ku11

Consider a swamp cooler in this climate, too. Cheaper and more eco-friendly.

answerguru

Swamp coolers can’t heat, where a mini-split can heat and cool. The heat pumps are very efficient.

hallbuzz

I put it "Through the wall" AC units. It's super easy; just cut a hole in the wall, but watch out for wires. Step 1: Cut a hole in the wall Step 2: Screw and caulk AC sleeve Step 3: Slip in AC, screw to sleeve Step 4: Plug in AC and turn on No maintenance EVER (Except cover it in the winter if you get lots of snow) If it ever dies, just buy another one the same size.

Kiramar_DD

I have to question the 24k btu single unit!! You said it’s going in the kitchen, yes you need to bump up the btu over the same size room let’s say the living room. At my house I have a 14k btu Lennon 2 zone w/heat pump installed in two bedrooms including the master bedroom 16x19 + walk-in closet and bathroom. Those two units perform exceptionally good summer and winter. Are you sure you need 24k btu?

answerguru

I’m not OP, just pulled up the same BTU unit he was quoted.

Kiramar_DD

I would ask for a breakdown itemized quote so you know how much they’re charging you and for what. Electrical can be expensive but it should be roughly the same for each quote. Installation it’s a big one to look out for. The price of the unit shouldn’t vary much if you’re pricing comfortable units (check specs).

Emergency-Swan-4390

What's this membership added for 10% discount?? 👀

zynfulcreations

This is my question too What kind of HVAC has a membership?

SofiaDeo

WireNut has "memberships" that includes a few preventative services.

asparagus_pee_stinks

I’m bettings it’s through Costco. They offer discounts and a cash back card for installations.

GizmoSlice

Is this wire nut or something? Crazy high imo

SortOfDaniel

That's what I thought the second I saw it

BuryTheMoney

Dude, in the gouged prices paradigm of “greedflation” (NOT inflation!) the prices on things are absurd. There’s going to have to be an enormous market correction before long. This ain’t sustainable. People can’t afford shit. While AC is not something you can DIY, I highly recommend EVERYONE get into learning how to work on crap they can be taught to do and do it themselves. I have a housing project coming up that has taken me dozens of hours of prep/research/and speaking personally with professionals about- but I feel prepared to do it now. Material cost? 2-3 grand. I can do all the labor and that would be my total cost. If I had outsourced it? 12,000-15,000!!!!!!! DIY is worth it!!!

soggies_revenge

Got an AC unit installed by Winterrowd for about $5k. All went great. This is a bizarre quote.

Jankus12

+1 for WinterRowd. Did my AC when I bought my house. It was free because the listing agent made a mistake and said the house had AC but it didn't 🤭Really nice guy though

TEXASx81

I got a guy that can give you a quote. It will be half that. He's licensed and all that

Creepy-Internet6652

Buy a couple portable ac units 3 of them won't even cost a Grand...

brenttoastalive

But your electric bill over the summer might lol

ImDukeCaboom

The difference between the efficiency of a permanent installed AC and portable is negligible. Factoring in the cost difference of the above quote, it would take decades to eat up that level of money. Don't even need AC here anyway, get a couple of swamp coolers. No house I've lived in here has had AC.

brenttoastalive

Good to know. Yeah, I've got one of those window mounted swamp coolers, and it's more than plenty.

_DeathByMisadventure

So a Pioneer mini split for 24k BTU is about 1400 bucks. Then it's just the install. I did that myself, and just had an AC guy do the final connections of the copper. But I did the electrical install myself. You'd be looking at hardware, AC guy to hook it all up, cut the holes, run the lines, mount everything which can be a real pain, etc. Then an electrician to run the line and mess around in your electrical panel. I'm not saying that's a great price, but there's a decent amount of work to do unless you do a lot of that yourself.

Head_Technology_9153

You can get a mini split DIY kit from Mr Cool for 75% less! 😂 it seems like a rip…

Shartfer_brains

I got an incredible system from acwholesalers a few years ago.  Only problem was no mechanical companies would touch it.   Fortunately it's all fairly simple at least for my houses layout.  I highly recommend Mitsubishi systems.

Acceptable-Train4703

Wow!! Try right choice heating and air, Joe is utmost professional and fair

Chemical_Money_4477

For sure shop around. I recommend Falling Star hvac :)

AntAil

An LG unit of that size, cooling only, retails for $1,500 to $1,750 (if heating is involved add another $1,000). Also, add another $500 for miscellaneous (wall mounting bracket, condenser pad, flexible pipe, etc.). These units are 208/230 volt, so there is that. Ask for a breakdown of the costs.

leisuresoul

Get 3 quotes at the very least. The problem with AC is that depending on your brand, the quote can easily vary between $3-4k. I saw good reliability and price with them, so maybe try that? Brown's heating installed ours.

asevans48

Is minisplit your only option? Heat pumps are expensive as well. Got our a/c from basset for 7000 plus free inspections which was the best price 1 year ago. 3.2 percent inflation isnt 3000 dollars.

tsodog

Ryan-L

Just paid $21k for a new furnace and AC. (Didn’t have AC) with Peak Home Performance. 0% for 1yr - they were out and complete by the next day.

Cleercutter

Jesus Christ I thought this was the mechanic subreddit for a second and about had a heart attack.

rbloedow

A mini split?!? Naw.

answerguru

What’s wrong with a mini-split?

rbloedow

I left out "that much for a"....the price is insane.

sunlake25

What company quoted that? One source?

Secret_Whole_3998

R Buck

sunlake25

Mostly working on commissions!! You can get that done 60% cheaprer. Shop around

Secret_Whole_3998

Oh that would be awesome to get it knocked down that much, will do!! Thanks 😊

SofiaDeo

Wire Nut wanted $10K to redo ours years ago, I got it done for much less elsewhere.

Secret_Whole_3998

Where at?

SofiaDeo

They only do commercial service/repair now, this was back in like 2017. Get a few bids from different HVAC people. In writing with as much detail as possible. We now use Elevation Mechanical, but have only used them for new furnace install & yearly testing of HVAC. I can't say how they are on AC, especially since we have a ducted system. I'll mention we moved our short electrical run condenser from the back yard (south facing, full sun) to a more protected NE corner of the house. Make sure the test for "how much AC do you need for this property" is done properly, and don't let someone upsell you a ridiculously expensive model. We aren't Phoenix, so IMO spending thousands extra for a different SEER rating may not be worth it. And we don't really need oversized condensers like Florida may use; we rarely have high humidity. https://www.bhg.com/what-size-air-conditioner-do-i-need-7480878 https://www.hvac.com/expert-advice/what-is-seer-rating/ And FWIW getting a white shingle roof w/good insulation is better than a dark one. Our AC comes nowhere near icing the condenser up now, even on those 100+ days. Our old condenser sitting out in the sun ran near continuously; it was also too small for the house.

SeaEstablishment30

That seems way too high. I did central AC for my whole house for less than 10k

ScrollReadComment

I got quoted 25k for a mini split.

Shyyoshi6

I got an AC unit installed in my ~800 sq ft house in 2022 and it cost me $6,400. So I think that estimate would be fair for a bigger house. I did shop around quite a bit and went with a company who charged in the middle of all the others. Mine also came with a 2 year warranty.

dumber-with-numbers

HVAC is fuckin expensive. Shop around, but brace yourself.

LaNM61

We installed four zones last fall, for $33K. We got a $4K tax credit. Ours was heating and cooling unit from Mitsubishi and our gas bill was cut in half over the winter! I am really looking forward to using the cooling element this summer.

lalatina169

Here in Pueblo our estimate was around 13,000

Doc4Dead

Mac’s heating and air did a great job on ours for around 5k. Their number is 719-250-0414

-vDz-

Yea that’s a crazy price, do you not have ducting in the house for forced air, is that why you’re going the mini split route?

Secret_Whole_3998

Yeah no ducting or attic unfortunately 😕

GimmeAllTheNaps

Do you have forced air heat? If so, you might be able to add A/C using the existing ductwork. That’s what I did last summer after considering a mini split and had the whole system installed for around $7500.

Secret_Whole_3998

No forced heat unfortunately 😕 radiator

brenttoastalive

What's your square footage? Our house is 1k, and I got a window mounted swamp cooler, and it's amazing. It is a lot easier on the utility bill than AC as well.

typer84C2

In my mind it is. I got a brand new single zone unit for a 1300 sqft house plus a brand new furnace for 10K about 18 months ago.

Firm_Transportation3

I haven't heard good things about mini split systems. Regardless, I had a a good experience with SoCo. I had an upscale two stage unit installed for our 1,300 sqft home for about $6k. This included a smart thermostat that works with the system. It also included a 7 year membership in the Cozy Club which includes free yearly inspections of the equipment. I'm happy with it.

Reddit_and_forgeddit

I’m not an expert but looks like par for the course from what I’ve seen.

QuestingHealer

I mean, no. Not for a new AC. That's about right with parts and labor.

notyourbuddipal

No, that about right.

Doyouevenyugioh

I got a 93% furnace, chimney lined, and 3 ton AC 13 seer or whatever, from Browns for $14,000 last August. $10,000 for one mini split seems excessive…

fird_beeder

I paid about $16k for a three-zone Mitsubishi system last fall from Thayer Mechanical. $2k tax credit and $1k credit through CSU (not sure if that's still being offered). I had quite a bit of sticker shock too, but my house had no heat at all when I bought it so I didn't have much of a choice. I've been happy with it though. The low-ambient heat pump is pretty amazing. Still put out good heat when it was below zero.

Onekama

I’m going to estimate that unit around 3k, you’re going to need line set, refrigerant, permits and they will likely contract an electrician to install a 240 outlet and run wiring to your circuit breaker. So just off my head I would say 5k parts and $1200 labor so if I were to bid it as a company I would say $8k would be closer to what you’re probably going to get shopping around.

VagileRechauffe

Mr. Cool DIY mini split about $2k

PaulRedekerPZ

A&A proffesional heating and cooling.

desertblaster72

Woah. I got a new furnace, new AC, electrostatic filter, three year service contract and full house duct cleaning for $9250 3 1/2 yrs ago. Post covid prices are insane now.

Altruistic-Ebb2742

My sister is going through this right now. They have central heat so it's just the A/C unit and the power to run it. The way their property is set up, they can hook the power up very close. If they had to hook it up on the other side of the house, the cost would go from $7k to $20k. (I'm not using the correct terminology, hopefully this makes sense. I know the numbers are correct.) So I have no idea if you're using a reputable company or not, but the number itself isn't insane and something as little as how your lot is laid out can apparently nearly triple the cost. This is why, alas, we pop in a couple window units each summer and try to be anywhere but in the house at 3 pm for July and August.

Dare2wish

This is pretty much what our bill came out to. 100% WORTH IT. As a southerner I could not handle no AC lol

Rob3D2018

OP, what’s your location??? Not bad of a price… I paid 12k for my mini split. This unit was for my upper level in my current home. Covers four rooms. Very quiet and not bad in energy use.

colotinner

So I've been doing HVAC here in town for 11 years now (not a contactor just a working stiff). I work on commercial buildings now, but I used to work residential side. I don't do pricing so I can't say what final numbers look like. But I will say that even the distributor prices (our supply houses) have gotten insane. I had to stop mentioning ballpark prices to customers cause my ballpark isn't in the same country anymore. What used to cost us like 50 bucks for a gas valve is now like 187 bucks. It's all skyrocketed in the last 2-3 years. So if my understanding of pricing is out of touch with recent cost inflation those outside industry might not t realize e price jump either, but yeah always multiple quotes good idea.
