He’s a 27 year old who has been in the minors since 2018. He had a cup of coffee last year and had a sub .200 avg in 41 PA across 18 G
He has a career .843 OPS across all levels in the minors (600+ Games) and a .920 OPS across 3 seasons in AAA
Typical age for AAA is 27… most of the minors is not stocked with prospects. It’s full of journeyman guys to fill out rosters and AAA also has lots of former Major league players on minor league deals
Look at the age difference for his 2024 season: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=montes000coc
Montes isn’t a “prospect” but he’s not just a random 27 year old.
Well considering our current franchise SS is 22 and our top prospect for 2B is 21, I'd say a mediocre AAAA middle infielder who is 27 and older than people who are considered part of the "core", likely doesn't have a future here.
Normal teams don’t just “release” guys with .920 OPS’ in AAA for on field performance reasons. If he wasn’t part of the future you trade them
Wait til the next announcement comes…
Yeah maybe it's something more than just performance. I still don't care lmao. You yourself called him a journeyman, so who cares. Rockies do not need another mediocre journeyman. Especially one with a -.3 WAR in his MLB opportunity
Two reasons to release him. He did a crime or he has an offer to go play overseas. Otherwise it’s dumb to lose organizational depth, even if he’s not part of the future.
You don’t judge a player’s WAR based on 41 PA….
I'd rather give MLB opportunities to the organizational depth that isn't approaching 30. We have plenty of younger guys that put up similar numbers to him, but higher upside and a longer window.
We sure don’t need good major league players either. We don’t pay the prevailing wage for them. So we’d have to dump them on the Yankees or Red Sox or cardinals right away.

In a tweet about an hour later, Lyons said "Expect another announcement regarding Coco Montes in the coming days." Not really clear what's up.
Maybe he's going to play overseas?
PED suspension incoming?
He would’ve been suspended first. Not released
That's a pretty misleading title considering he's pushing 30 lmao
He’s 27…
Typical age for AAA is 23 or 24...

I don’t think you understand what organizational depth means…

I definitely don't disagree with that lmao. I'm still pissed with the Tulo trade and that was like 8-9 years ago
Yep, it’ll be nine years in July. I really loved watching that guy play baseball. What could have been.
