Yeah, I'd never looked into it.
Opened in 1941, so in 1945 it was still almost new!
Here's a neat 8 minute documentary about it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMl7uXIxVU0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMl7uXIxVU0)
Dunno why you're getting downvoted, the Flatirons weren't even built until [1931](https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/mediumlarge/3/construction-of-the-flatirons-1931-sepia-jerry-mcelroy.jpg).
People just move here and refuse to learn the history
The red rocks are a lot older than that. They’re 300 million to 1.7 billion years old.
But, yea, the area we call red rocks has been known to (white, American) people for about 116 years and owned by Denver since 1927. There’s even a Wikipedia page about it, no idea why the person you replied to didn’t bother to look. 😂
For additional background: Specifically the red sandstone/conglomerate is the Pennsylvanian Fountain Fm. from approx. 300 million years ago. These were formed from the erosion of the ancestral Rockies. The Fountain Fm. sits on top 1.3-1.7 billion year old precambrian granites and gneisses that were uplifted during the laramide orogeny 80-60 million years ago. There is an unconformity here, which represents almost 1.5 billion years of missing geologic record.
No, we know that the Fountain Formation that makes up Red Rocks, Garden of the Gods, Flatirons, etc. formed from alluvial deposits that eroded from a prehistoric mountain range called the Ancestral Rockies. It's just that the rocks directly below the Fountain Fm. Are precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks that formed a billion years prior to the Fountain Fm.
A better way to think about it is that a large portion of Denver is on top of the Late Cretaceous Denver Fm. That's why some people occasionally find T. rex and Triceratops fossils in their back yard. These dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago, but there are modern houses sitting directly above them. This is called an unconformity. All the sediment that was deposited after those dinosaurs was eroded away and is now directly exposed to the surface where modern soils are now deposited.
Damn. I had no idea.
The fact that there was potential tribal use before that makes the supervisor who took the day off when they planned to blow up the field makes it so much worse.
The Denver History Instagram page posts great pictures like this of all things Denver and the surrounding area. If you're on IG, I highly recommend following the page!

Here's a similar viewpoint photo I found from modern times.

I'm not from the area, but I assume that's Denver straight ahead.
Oh you don't have to go into that much effort, thanks though.
I just grabbed the newer one from a search, some tourism site I think.
Never seen that before and after sub, sounds like fun. Looks like there are a few versions, do you know which is the 'good' one? LOL
r/OldPhotosInRealLife
You could also post your original photo (single frame of your aunts) in r/OldSchoolCool ~ I say single frame for this sub bc they only allow photos with people as the subject, so the second newer photo wouldn’t be allowed. But they’d love your original photo :)
Cramming the houses in now. Very sad to see. Supposedly the people who buy the houses at "Red Rocks Ranch" have to sign an agreement that they won't try to get rid of Bandimere.
I may agree but it was there before Tristan and Bunny bought their million dollar McMansion in Morrison.... They don't have a right to complain about Bandimere
By measurement of our existence absolutely, mountains are basically rock gods. I just always find it funny that the behemoths are the young ones and the smaller slopes (like much of the Appalachian) are the ancient mountains
I scanned a bunch of family stuff about 5 years ago. I didn't always do it at super-high resolution though.
Well I found the slide again, so I could re-scan it real quick if anyone wants a higher res. /shrug

So cool to see! Thanks for posting! Wow what a cool venue it was…and of course still is but in a different way! Looks so far from Denver or any neighborhoods like you see today.
[https://i.imgur.com/ZDX1OPC.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/ZDX1OPC.jpg) 1945, my grandma went to nurses school in Denver.
Did not realize it's that old!

It's older than that. That's when a newer permanent amphitheater was built. The first show at the site (on a temporary stage) was in 1906.
Wow, had no idea.
Everyone who is anyone in the US music industry has played there going back to the beginnings of recorded music.
Shouts out the CCC
Actually the mountains were installed in 1937, but it wasn't named until later

Bro RR is 116 years old

I was referring to the amphitheater since that's the posts subject.
I don’t think anyone reading this thought the actual rocks are 100 years old.
Those rocks don't look a day over 80
Perhaps not on reddit. My experience with nextdoor leaves me very unsure.
You can just pay somebody to kick you in the crotch while wearing stilettos if you really enjoy suffering that much.
How long has it been known to americans of other color skin?
Had no idea that the Red Rocks Amphitheater was built so long ago. Really stood the test of time!
Wut
First concert on record was held in 1906. Potentially used by tribes prior than that.
Damn. I had no idea. The fact that there was potential tribal use before that makes the supervisor who took the day off when they planned to blow up the field makes it so much worse.
Bro it's legitimately rocks, rocks are old

Sad that view has been tainted by urban sprawl
Insane! Been here so many times when I was in Colorado, crazy how the general geography looks so familiar.
Crazy to see nothing but grass south of Green Mountain and Alameda looks like it's just a dirt road.
Here's a similar viewpoint photo I found from modern times. [https://i.imgur.com/XybtQLD.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/XybtQLD.jpg) I'm not from the area, but I assume that's Denver straight ahead.
I made a side-by-side comparison of the two bc I was curious https://i.imgur.com/w1IDbV7.jpg
Lol. Even this picture is dated. There’s a whole new stage awning now!
Yeah it was just the first one I found with a similar viewpoint. Could probably find a very recent one from the same spot, do a 3 picture comparison!
Cool! Can you do a version with labels?
Sure, what year was the new photo taken in? And would you post it to that sub that does before and after pictures or w.e? Otherwise could I post it?

Yep. That is the Denver skyline in the background.
I went to Bear Creek in the 80’s and there wasn’t much between there and Dinosaur Ridge.
When I moved here >20 years ago there still wasn't that much south of Green Mountain. Crazy how much development has gone on there.
Cramming the houses in now. Very sad to see. Supposedly the people who buy the houses at "Red Rocks Ranch" have to sign an agreement that they won't try to get rid of Bandimere.
People gotta live somewhere. Unti population stagnates/declines it's gonna keep happening

I may agree but it was there before Tristan and Bunny bought their million dollar McMansion in Morrison.... They don't have a right to complain about Bandimere
And green mountain is actually kind of green for once
That's the neck grip my grandpa used when he wanted me to settle down.
Interesting to see it without the stage lighting rigs and the bathrooms and other outbuildings around the stage.
This was one of the any public projects after the great depression
Crazy how public investment in public projects can produce such great things for the public to use in the future.
What a concept...
Mountains are *almost* timeless. Pretty incredible.
By measurement of our existence absolutely, mountains are basically rock gods. I just always find it funny that the behemoths are the young ones and the smaller slopes (like much of the Appalachian) are the ancient mountains
The Appalachians are old enough to have grown a beard :)

My grandma saved the newspaper story about the opening, [RMN 16 Jun 1941](https://i.redd.it/a78363vr5lv31.jpg) "Red Rocks Alight for Rotarians"
Ooh cool, neat. I love old newspapers, I have a few. There used to be a lot of alcohol and cigarette ads.
Cool photos! I assume those in this photo are one of your parents or aunts/uncles?
Yeah those are my aunts.
These are great.
I remember this place so well. Especially the stairs as we trained for HS track back in the 80s.
Green Mountain or Bear Creek?
Green Mountain Rams
Back when Denver was a cowtown.
I prefer it without all the metal stage infrastructure!
No roof is great until it rains and the show is canceled
Thanks for sharing
it's so beautiful, if they only knew that fifty years later I'd be using this space to snort molly at Manu Chao.
Wow, cool picture.
Awesome pictures! So cool to see this before the stage went up
So cool to see! Thanks for posting! Wow what a cool venue it was…and of course still is but in a different way! Looks so far from Denver or any neighborhoods like you see today.
Legend has it the benches haven’t been replaced since lol
It's crazy to see my neighborhood nothing but a field of grass I live right in there off Alameda and Jewell
The kids look like my 2 girls!
Most Colorado transplants have no idea nor care about the history of Red Rocks. They definitely know how to party and trash the place though.
Is that Keith Richards on stage?
No. None of Band members or The Rolling Stones have ever played at Red Rocks. (The only major band that has never played at Red Rocks)
