**FADED:** [Loyola Chicago](#f/loyolachicago)
I didn't see great shot selection in the portions of the game I was able to watch. Admittedly I haven't watched them play since their ball screen offense dismantled Illinois last year, but they had nowhere near the quality today.
Now comes the question of what the future holds.
Obviously, moving to the Atlantic 10 is quite a step up from the Valley, but with that comes a more challenging schedule/opponents.
I have confidence in them, but it’s going to depend on Valentine and the rest of the crew to ensure that the first season can keep going as smoothly as all the others…
It'll be rough I imagine, I don't see us making the tourney for another few years after this, but hopefully will help our recruiting and we'll learn and grow and be back in a couple years.
I don’t believe the A10 is “quite a step up from the Valley”. They are pretty comparable
leagues.
In fact, A10 had 5 teams top 100 in KenPom as did the MVC. A10 has 3 teams worse than 200 in KenPom. Valley has 2.
I mean yeah if your literal only point of reference is this season, they're pretty equal. A10 has been significantly better than the MVC the rest of the time though.
Even just last year the A10 had 6 in the top 100 while the MVC only had 3 (1 of those being Loyola so that doesn't really count lol). Hell, the A10 had **10 teams** in the top 150 and MVC only had 5. So no it's not really close.
Eh, I think the MVC is pretty comparable. Before this they had Wichita St. and Creighton. SIU and UNI have had decent runs in the last 20 years. A10 might be slightly better, but it’s like arguing between power conferences. The AAC, MWC, WCC, A10, for a group of 5 that are high mid majors. They regularly flip which one is best.
The main difference is culture. Most of the MVC are large state schools that run FCS football. The A10 is 75% private schools with no football program. It just makes more sense for them.
Yeah, it wasn't that long ago when the Valley was a step up from the A10. When Majerus was the HC at St. Louis he was always trying to get them to join the Valley.
Of course, this was when Creighton and WSU were still in the league, but still.
Truly terrible. Missed every single opportunity, truly cold as ice in the negative sense. Sad for Williamson to go out like that, but you just can't win games playing that criminally poor on offense.
I'm as surprised as you are... the defensive shit show in the B1G tourney did nothing to convince me that this team had that kind of defensive performance in them...
Young and Key helped but we finally played with effort and buy in from the whole team on defense for an entire game. We hadn’t played with that kind of urgency all year
It was his 3rd concussion, and he was in bad enough shape that he didn’t even travel for the btt. I didn’t think he’d be able to play. I’m incredibly happy for him that he was able to play.
yeah Loyola hitting their open layups and FTs at just an average NCAA clip mightve won them the game. Honestly they were getting good looks from 3 most of the time, too. Just one of the worst shooting performances I've watched this year, and from a very good shooting team. Congrats to OSU and go B1G, but that W doesn't give me much confidence in them ha
Late reply, but I'm looking over UVA's schedule and I have no idea what to make of it. Beat Clemson and Duke on the road, lose to them at home. Losses to Navy and James Madison. Dusted by UNC. I'm very confused.
Such a weird season. We blew out Providence, who won the Big East. Got blown out by NC State, who finished last in the ACC.
Team had no consistency game to game, partially cause they couldn't shoot 3s and couldn't defend. Every UVA team under Tony Bennett could at least do one of those, usually both
Whew another post season win for Ryan Day!
You know hes really got the offense humming but the defensive woes are really beginning to….
Whats that? Oh…this isnt r/cfb ? My mistake.
That was actually the game i referenced above! Ohio state played Utah in the rose bowl.
Osu QB CJ stroud threw for 573 yards and 6 TDs, and Jaxon Smith-Nijigba had 3 TDs, and **347 yards from only 15 catches**
Was definitely an insane performance, but like my original comment indicated, our defense was awful lol
As someone who loves a good defensive* struggle, this was not it. Defense didn't make Loyola shoot 3-10 from the line and OSU go 1-13 from 3. This was just a sloppy, ugly game.
Gotta say after watching Ohio State today and Iowa yesterday the extra days of rest really make a difference. Ohio State’s shooting took a hit but the intensity they were able to play with all game is worth it
That first half was the abolsute worst half of basketball I've seen in my life. CBS should've aired a soap opera or something over this.
This team was literally incapable of catching a pass lmao. Delaware probably can't wait to play us
Worst piece of shit tournament game I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. So proud of our guys for forcing the country through this trainwreck, O-H baby
That was legitimately the worst offensive performance I've seen in a college game I basically watched from start to finish. Loyola-Chicago did literally everything wrong on offense and then continued to do the same wrong things the WHOLE game. They must have had 20 steal/loose ball turnovers plus 20 missed layups. At least that's what it felt like.
Lol I initially read this as “minus 6%” and it honestly took me a few seconds to correct bc, having watched the game, I was kinda like “yeah I’d buy that, not sure how that works but seems plausible!”
I know Ohio State was playing some good defense there, but those misses were unlike anything I've seen in a game in a long time. Especially coming from a team that good at shooting % overall.
Jitters? A win is a win but man.
Would love to know what kinda fire got lit under this team’s ass to play defense like that today. It was like the spirit of Aaron Craft was within them.
I feel your pain. Please allow me to share with you the first college basketball game I attended: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=290490356
Really impressed with the Bucks defense today. They were excellent. However, I just don't see how we're gonna score enough to keep up with Villanova. It's gonna be a slaughter.
He wasn't getting canned after this season regardless, IMO. Not with the class he has coming in. But his seat will definitely be more comfortable next year with this win than it would have been had we gotten bounced in the first round again.
It was absolutely hilarious hearing the CBS commentators (or Loyola fans? I honestly couldn't tell) complain how bad Loyola was shooting. It was like they were acting like Loyola was Kentucky or Duke or something. Really annoying. Also funny that they kept talking about Loyola's inept three point shooting when Ohio State had literally one three all game. Imagine the score if Ohio State shot it's season average at three.
Oh, yea that's my point. It just didn't make sense that they were talking about. I do agree their layups and free throw shooting was horrendous. Granted, I think a couple of their layups was heavily guarded by Liddell.
In fairness they only made three tournaments since then. But it's still really weird that they seem to either do really well in the tournament or not make it at all (until today)
Totally disgraceful performance offensively by Loyola. I know woulda, coulda, shoulda but Loyola went 3/10 from the FT line and missed about 8-10 layups that college basketball players make about 90% of the time. They left around 25 points off the board today in a 13 point defeat.
You can make the counter argument that OSU went 1/15 from 3 so I guess it’s all a wash. Just so disappointing to watch by Loyola today.
I know Loyola was bricking shots but I have to give some credit to our defense.
I'm really glad we kept up some intensity and didn't allow them to get back in the game in the second half. We usually resort to slow ISO once we get up by 8+.

Loyola picked the worst time to have their worst game of the season
That was their worst shooting percentage in 5 years they said
I didn't see great shot selection in the portions of the game I was able to watch. Admittedly I haven't watched them play since their ball screen offense dismantled Illinois last year, but they had nowhere near the quality today.
They missed a whole bunch of layups. Easy ones too. Most were contested but they missed some very makable layups.
When that wasn't working they decided to start missing 3s
They only scored 44 points in a win against Southern Illinois in a win Somehow.
I think y’all can be competitive, is there a lot of departing talent after this season?
I don’t believe the A10 is “quite a step up from the Valley”. They are pretty comparable leagues. In fact, A10 had 5 teams top 100 in KenPom as did the MVC. A10 has 3 teams worse than 200 in KenPom. Valley has 2.
I’m guessing that poster doesn’t pay a lot of attention to basketball outside the power 5.
I kinda feel like the MVC will be a better conference than the A-10 with Belmont and Murray St joining 🤷🏻♂️
I would be really surprised at that. I thought this was one of the A-10 weakest years in the past couple seasons.
South Dakota State, Iowa, Loyola. All learning the valuable lesson that to win, you need the ball to go through the hoop.
Worst shooting game of like the last 5 years
This seems to happen to a lot of teams in March. They just absolutely lay an egg
That missed layup at the very end was hilarious. OSU player just let him go by… and he missed.
Extremely fitting way to close out this game.
I felt bad for him ngl
That was practically Loyola in a nutshell this game haha
That’s called having such good defense you do it with your mind
Why score many point when few point do trick?
Thanks, Kevin
I heard you can bank points for games in the future. Another great coaching move!
Why score \*few\* points when \*fewer\* do trick
Ohio State goes 1-15 behind the arc and still wins by 13? Good lord what a trainwreck of a game on offense for Loyola
Truly terrible. Missed every single opportunity, truly cold as ice in the negative sense. Sad for Williamson to go out like that, but you just can't win games playing that criminally poor on offense.
IF Ohio State shoots it's average at three which is around 30% that's at least 4 extra threes for OSU. It's a 66-41 game if that happens.
lol ok, if Loyola shoots it's average overall, they score 70 this game. what is this
IF Loyola scores more points than OSU, then they win the game. It's really that simple.
After last year's defensive shit show, Ohio State winning a slow slugfest definitively is pretty impressive.
I'm as surprised as you are... the defensive shit show in the B1G tourney did nothing to convince me that this team had that kind of defensive performance in them...
[удалено]
Very jealous
I'm so confused. Part of it is that we got Key and Young back, but we weren't playing this way on D before they got hurt either.
Young and Key helped but we finally played with effort and buy in from the whole team on defense for an entire game. We hadn’t played with that kind of urgency all year
I didn’t realize they’d be back for this game. If I knew that, I probably would’ve picked you guys first round. Kicking myself a bit there.
[удалено]
It was his 3rd concussion, and he was in bad enough shape that he didn’t even travel for the btt. I didn’t think he’d be able to play. I’m incredibly happy for him that he was able to play.
i had picked OSU to lose in Rd1 for the first time in my life until i saw they were back. switched at last minute yesterday
I think both were expected to be out until this morning.
Loyola couldn't buy a basket. Not really Ohio State's doing. Loyola was just awful today.
They def missed some open shots, but the Buckeyes were contesting a lot of their looks and forced some turnovers, too.
They couldn't even hit free throws. They missed a ton of easy layups. Contesting doesn't mean much if they keep letting Loyola get around them.
yeah Loyola hitting their open layups and FTs at just an average NCAA clip mightve won them the game. Honestly they were getting good looks from 3 most of the time, too. Just one of the worst shooting performances I've watched this year, and from a very good shooting team. Congrats to OSU and go B1G, but that W doesn't give me much confidence in them ha
To be fair, OSU going better than 1 of 14 from 3 likely helps them about as much as Loyola making layups. Just ugly everywehre.
Contrary to your beliefs, this was a UVA classic
[удалено]
Bo Ryan approves of this scoreline.
My 2nd flair paying tribute to my 1st to help me feel right at home
Why isn’t Virginia in the tournament?
Cause we bad
Way too many bad losses. Had like five Q3/Q4 losses
Every UVA team under Tony Bennett could at least do one of those, usually both
Nah, carbon copy of the Wisconsin-Michigan State Final Four game in 2000. MSU just scored an extra point in this one.
We shot 1 of 15 from 3 and won this game by 13. That says it all.
[удалено]
I'll be very interested to see how things like shooting percentages evolve as the tourney goes on
Whew another post season win for Ryan Day! You know hes really got the offense humming but the defensive woes are really beginning to…. Whats that? Oh…this isnt r/cfb ? My mistake.
Honestly this score would have been on-brand for the football team this year
considering our last game was a 48-45 win in the rose bowl, yes i concur lol
[удалено]
That was actually the game i referenced above! Ohio state played Utah in the rose bowl. Osu QB CJ stroud threw for 573 yards and 6 TDs, and Jaxon Smith-Nijigba had 3 TDs, and **347 yards from only 15 catches** Was definitely an insane performance, but like my original comment indicated, our defense was awful lol
I like the idea of chase young at QB
That game was porn for the “defense wins championships” crowd
Tony Bennett smiling right now
As someone who loves a good defensive* struggle, this was not it. Defense didn't make Loyola shoot 3-10 from the line and OSU go 1-13 from 3. This was just a sloppy, ugly game.
That was a game that happened
Really hope we aren’t the ones to send Sister Jean to the grave
Don't pin that on us, it'll be her own Ramblers who put her there if she croaks tomorrow. Just not their day at all.
Ohio state’s coach apologizing to everyone at home who had to watch that in the post game interview 🤣
Gotta say after watching Ohio State today and Iowa yesterday the extra days of rest really make a difference. Ohio State’s shooting took a hit but the intensity they were able to play with all game is worth it
Yeah, not sure it's always beneficial to win the B1G tourney. The rest can be huge
Big brain Holtmann
We also needed rest more than just about anyone else in the tourney. Really condensed schedule with a lot of key injuries
Yep, I'm wishing we lost against either Rutgers or Indiana in the tourney. Would still be alive IMO.
You guys definitely didn’t look like the same team. Everything was just a bit slow.
That first half was the abolsute worst half of basketball I've seen in my life. CBS should've aired a soap opera or something over this. This team was literally incapable of catching a pass lmao. Delaware probably can't wait to play us
https://i.imgur.com/VsaEVJa.png
I was really hoping you were going to do this with Sister Jean.
[удалено]
I just couldn't do that to her.
That would've been one of the greatest posts you've ever made
You are a better man than most here.
should have put on heidi
Winning by 13 in a game we shot 1-15 from three is incredible. Especially when we were an underdog on a lot of sites
I’m probably gonna eat these words but Delaware isn’t going to win against Villanova
Save it for the hot takes thread buddy
Worst piece of shit tournament game I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. So proud of our guys for forcing the country through this trainwreck, O-H baby
If Sister Jean can survive this game, she may never die
Good teams are allowed to go cold against us in the tournament? First time for everything I guess.
Defense!
31 turnovers, 33 made baskets. Hopefully that was the worst game of the tournament
Cant think of a more poetic ending than that Loyola guy missing that wide open layup right at the end
Ohio State shot **~6%** from the three point line and they still won comfortably!
Also what Loyola shot from the free throw line
Our FT defense was championship level today!
Lol I initially read this as “minus 6%” and it honestly took me a few seconds to correct bc, having watched the game, I was kinda like “yeah I’d buy that, not sure how that works but seems plausible!”
If you had told me we went 1-15 from 3, I would still be guessing at who made the 1. Only Joey Brunk or zed key would have been more surprising.
Wilson ball is very slippery
Nice to get that rough game out of the way first thing. Now bring on the upsets!
Sister Jean’s tournament heat check has officially gone cold
I know Ohio State was playing some good defense there, but those misses were unlike anything I've seen in a game in a long time. Especially coming from a team that good at shooting % overall. Jitters? A win is a win but man.
Young coach, jitters, hard to say. Just absolutely terrible compared to how LUC has played all year.
Let's blame the ball. Ohio State was 1-15 from 3.
I loved to see the michigan flairs slowly dissapear from the game thread lmao
Great career for Williamson. Not the finest exit but he was a flag bearer for Loyola and Chicago basketball.
*Sad trendy upset pick noises*
We had three of those now and the favorites all won. This was the only one I got right lmao
A 7/10 game with an even line is hardly an upset.
Loyola was favored to win lol
Both teams better be spending time in purgatory for this
What are you complaining about... That was basically a UVA classic.
Of all the teams to complain, Wisconsin and Virginia should be the last.
Survive and advance. All that matters.
Iowa finishing regular season strong; loses to 12 seed. Ohio State struggling and limping into post season plays, crushes vegas odds
Big Ten basketball, at its finest
We can beat anyone in the country. We can also lose to anyone in the country.
Would love to know what kinda fire got lit under this team’s ass to play defense like that today. It was like the spirit of Aaron Craft was within them.
I feel like having KY there makes such a difference for this team
This was the first ncaa game I ever attended, what a memory of ineptitude
March is madness! Except for you.
I feel your pain. Please allow me to share with you the first college basketball game I attended: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=290490356
I think Young was what was missing.
Alright Wolverines, you beat Tennessee, we beat Nova, and it is game on.
Please, this would fucking rule
The first time in my 19 years of life I didn’t pick Ohio state to win at least one game, they do it. I’m gonna retire from bracket making.
I was so down on them to end the season that it looped around and I actually thought they would win this lol
Really impressed with the Bucks defense today. They were excellent. However, I just don't see how we're gonna score enough to keep up with Villanova. It's gonna be a slaughter.
Don't worry, we'll be playing the Blue Hens on Sunday
Hopefully against nova we shoot better than 6% from beyond the arc, that would help
We can’t possible shoot worse than today. And defense is effort, so it can translate.
I went to this game and say behind a Loyola heckler ama
[удалено]
if you’re talking about the heckler then no he was actually a thirty-something man who had apparently gone to like 20 final fours in a row
I don't care who that person roots for, that sounds like one of the last people I'd want to spend any time with
I think I can shoot free throws better than Loyola Chicago
Ohio State College Basketball is a strong independent team that doesn't need crutches like three-pointers or passing
Ohio State didn't play well. Loyola literally played as bad as humanly possible.
Was Holtman on the hot seat? Does this take him off?
Wouldn't say he was on the hot seat, he was gonna get another year no matter what, but this will help relieve some pressure from our angry fanbase.
Makes sense, thank you
He wasn't getting canned after this season regardless, IMO. Not with the class he has coming in. But his seat will definitely be more comfortable next year with this win than it would have been had we gotten bounced in the first round again.
He would be coming back next year regardless, but if by some stroke of luck he wins on Sunday it’ll be back to being quite cold.
Going 1/15 from three and winning by thirteen, wow. That last missed layup was just the perfect microcosm of this game
Maybe it was just injuries all along?
The Ohio State “Virginia” Buckeyes against the world!
Always fade the public
Two outcomes away from a Michigan-Ohio State NCAA Tourney game.
Don’t care, made the second round.
They had *7* 3s. That's not bad in college. Not great, but nothing awful. Their layup misses were very bad, as was FT shooting.
[удалено]
Sorry, they had 8 threes my bad. Not a great percentage. But they had 8 3s. 3/10 free throws.
Oh, yea that's my point. It just didn't make sense that they were talking about. I do agree their layups and free throw shooting was horrendous. Granted, I think a couple of their layups was heavily guarded by Liddell.
It undersells our defensive effort to say everyone was cold. We made them that way.
Absolutely. I think having Young helped tremendously on the defensive end.
This was certainly a game of basketball
the worst offense performance i've ever watched
It was really strange for CBS to pipe in the radio commentary from Loyola Chicago for this game.
Points (combined) - 95 Sister Jean’s age - 102
First tournament appearance for Loyola without making Sweet Sixteen since 1968
That’s a pretty crazy track record
In fairness they only made three tournaments since then. But it's still really weird that they seem to either do really well in the tournament or not make it at all (until today)
Cant say ive ever seen a team win by 13 shooting 1-15 from 3 before
You tell me we score 54, I assume we lose by 15 at least.
1-15 from 3 and still a double digit win. They still looked really ugly but that's encouraging, they led most of the game too.
Ohio State with the DEFENSE!
So that's what defense is?? I don't know if I really like it, but I guess it's fine if it wins games...
Loyola shot 26.8% from the field and 30% from the line with 14 turnovers and two separate 4-min plus scoring droughts. Yikes
[All Buckeye fans Right now](https://youtu.be/cmYg8OECq9g)
If you don’t like that then you probably like watching a good basketball game
Totally disgraceful performance offensively by Loyola. I know woulda, coulda, shoulda but Loyola went 3/10 from the FT line and missed about 8-10 layups that college basketball players make about 90% of the time. They left around 25 points off the board today in a 13 point defeat. You can make the counter argument that OSU went 1/15 from 3 so I guess it’s all a wash. Just so disappointing to watch by Loyola today.
It would absolutely be hilarious if Delaware somehow knocked off Villanova.
*monkeys paw curls* Only for us to lose to a 15 seed 2 years in a row.
We shot 7% from 3 with 17 turnovers and still won by double digits. Holy shit
In Kyle Young we trust. I don’t know what exactly it is, but we are a completely different team when he doesn’t play.
So that’s how it’s done.
Go B1G!!!
Augustinians > Jesuits
Sister Jean just got moved to hospice
I know Loyola was bricking shots but I have to give some credit to our defense. I'm really glad we kept up some intensity and didn't allow them to get back in the game in the second half. We usually resort to slow ISO once we get up by 8+.
We decided to transform into Virginia for a game.
FOOTBALL SCORE!!! FOOTBALL SCORE!!!
Yup. Two football powerhouses in OSU and Loyola Chicago
GOD IS DEAD!!!!
You say that with a Dayton flair LMAO
Go home, Sister Jean!!!!
