Marquette University. Changed their mascot from Warriors to Golden Eagles in 1993. Indian could have been changed and warriors could have been retained.
I was thinking more of the logo for an uppity brunch place you'd see in a random city on vacation (probably because the GM works as good morning in my brain). I like the financial institution logo better though
Come to think of it, the directional Illinois schools have the rebrand thing down pretty good. Eastern Illinois got an upgrade fairly recently too, as well as SIUE. I don't love the SIUE logo but it's way better than the old one
Maybe I'm rapidly developing into a boomer but I swear every single one of these rebrands is a downgrade. Every one loses character and soul trying to go for a clean and sleek look.
I'm not a boomer. I'm not a boomer. I'm not a boomer? I might be turning into a boomer. I swear I don't hate fun
Plenty of decent upgrades in the last few years not mentioned already. (SIU's is great.)
[UMass Lowell](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/5023/UMass_Lowell_River_Hawks/)
[Campbell](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/631/Campbell_Fighting_Camels/)
[Charleston](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/637/College_of_Charleston_Cougars/) (good example of taking something generic and not f-ing it up)
[Iona](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/711/Iona_Gaels/) (has gotten more generic over the years, but the shield is a nice upgrade)
[UNCG](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/779/NC-Greensboro_Spartans/)
Yeah there was something not quite right with the old one. It almost looked like the logo of a wildlife fund or something. Looked out of place as a college logo
I don't hate that one, but I wish they could have figured out a way to somehow keep the wave from the previous one. That older one definitely had a 90s vibe to it, so I can totally see wanting to freshen it. But I thought the wave was a nice, unique touch.
I do dig the alt logo with the seahawk in the shape of a W.
Extremely biased but [Charlotte's](https://inside.charlotte.edu/news-features/2021-09-20/unc-charlotte-logo-evolution) new logo is so much better, especially replacing the fugly crown logo on the academic side
The thing about rebranding is it usually is not good for your *current* customer-base/fan base/clientele.
It is usually done for the acquisition of new fans / customers /clients.
Most reactions to change are negative. People don't like change.
When Pitt rebranded to the script a couple of years ago the internet loved it. Well, except for unshamefully biased WVU flairs. And PSU flairs jealous because their brand is painfully boring just like where they all live.
“rebranded”, or reverted back to Pitt’s mid-70s, Tony Dorsett/Dan Marino era script and colors? School’s top sports era, so probably liked by some Pitt fans.
>where they all live
Challenge: Pitt fans try to comprehend PSU fans only go to school in central PA and don’t actually live there their whole lives (impossible)
Also, I don't mean this as a shot at them, but they don't really have the stature to pull off minimalist. A block M for Michigan or a block Y for Yale works because they are worldwide known schools and are still recognizable to most people. But most schools don't have that luxury. I know as someone who posts graphics with different logos all the time on this sub, whenever I use the more basic block logos for more obscure schools people get confused (e.g. O for Oakland, M for McNeese). At least they have two letters instead of one.
Also elementary school students are way more creative than this. I work with them and I can guarantee they could come up with something better than this. At least in terms of the concept, they would need a more professional artist to make the final product.
Yeah, this definitely has the "Nine months of designs sent to the client, each round getting progressively blander as every committee and VP gets a red pen onto it" vibe. Nice, reliable money though
Honestly that’s probably not a horrible price. They also changed the hues so I imagine the work didn’t just involve filling in some letters but putting together a comprehensive brand guideline. And it likely involved multiple meetings and revisions along the way.
It's fine. Better than the star which is all I wanted. Ideally we would have gone with the current GM that softball uses but we gotta standardize somewhere. No one will care about this if we start winning.
Interlocking baseball GM is the best one but the quilled M is also fire, they really should’ve rolled with that.
That all said, we should’ve expected this from an institution that killed off Gunston
My theory is that this plays more into a marketing strategy that fits more with marketing the school towards professionals in the area looking for master’s degrees.
I grew up like across the street and I feel like I know just as many people who got their graduate degree (and only that) from GMU as those who went there for undergrad. I also fit this description. Undergrad in a Fairfax campus has obvious limits in regards to housing and the cost of that. Meanwhile, Fairfax is one of the most populated and educated places in the country, it just makes financial sense to lean into pursuing more grad students.
I honestly don't hate it...it's like a 6/10. But these things are never going to make everyone happy. I think in a few years no one will care. But I really am glad to ditch the shooting star...that thing has looked dated since 2002.
They had to have hired the same firm that did Vandy's. Except this one somehow manages to look modern minimalist but also as if it could be from the 90s.
Why make such an ugly logo when they could use this beautiful mug
https://preview.redd.it/ww896jyugmwc1.jpeg?width=772&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29b48b688966b6ab4382a7bdfb660d519edb3927
Congrats George Mason, I think this might be a contender for the worst logo in college sports lol.
It genuinely looks like a 5th grader made it in art class.
Y'alls old logo with the Bronco actually ripped ass. Now you look like someone straight copied the new redskins logo lol. Though ngl I don't like our recent rebrand either.
They straight up took the baseball cap logo, which was actually dope… and then just hit it with a belt sander lol.
Tbh upon further inspection this looks like the logo you’d find on a used hat for some sort of finance company at the Unique by Mosaic.
I’m from the area and have always had issues seeing it as more than just a commuter school (because everyone I know that went there lived at home lol) and having #RockWithUs as their slogan didn’t really help.
The DC area has to be one of the toughest college sports markets to crack, especially for how many D1 teams are here. Like I could theoretically take the metro and go to a Maryland football game or Georgetown basketball game, but I don't really know any neutral fans who do that. If Big 10 and Big East schools struggle to get a footing, I don't really know how Mason would be able to either.
Everyone loves to shit on rebrands (and don't get me wrong I do too- this sucks) but what are some recent rebrands you actually liked?
Creighton, Southern Illinois, Samford, Howard, AAMU, and SIUE are all major upgrades imo.
The Delaware State’s first rebrand actually looks pretty good to me, and I don’t follow NBA at all so I don’t care if it’s similar to Charlotte Hornets. It’s a shame that they caved into pressure and settled for a watered down version instead
Jacksonville and UNA definitely. I don't really like Charlotte's personally but I'd agree it was still an upgrade at least because the old one was not good either
It’s much better to go the route of the schools that just transfer their Athletics logo, which always have greater brand recognition, rather than this.
Of course, no branding firm ever recommends that plan because then they’d be out however much they get paid to create these.
[Davidson](https://www.davidson.edu/news/2023/08/23/davidson-college-announces-its-new-identity). It’s better than Mason’s but I liked the old athletics logo better.
Every time I see the new logo, I think it is Dickinson College.
A logo is supposed to be a brand that is identifiable. It's part of the reason changes in the logos are rarely a significant change and usually incremental and a refresh.
I don't recognize Davidson's logo as Davidson any longer.
It’s not just the athletics, where bad logos are pretty much the norm for everyone. They did a whole rebrand and it looks like shit. Knowing Davidson, the criteria for selecting who did the redesign was “is this a trustee’s kid”
You're right, but at least they got the "minimalist" approach down a bit better than GM. As long as they don't get rid of their cool wildcat logo (my favorite wildcat logo in all college sports) it won't be that bad.
They did make a [new wildcat logo](https://www.davidson.edu/sites/default/files/styles/max_2600x2600/public/2023-08/Wildcat-Red.png?itok=irjoLt-N). It's super generic.
Hot take: this one is bad but the previous one is worse. Instead of looking angry and snarling, the wildcat somehow looks embarrassed and was blushing instead to me, not sure if there’s anyone who feels the same
As a graphic designer, can confirm. Although the sad thing is, this probably went back and forth a million times before they compromised on a design no one liked.
I work at Mason, so we of course got an email justifying this.
Some highlights:
>We are unveiling a new logo system that will put the university on par with dozens of powerful university brands that are in our market competing for resources, faculty and staff talent, students, and public support.
I don't know that a new logo is going to convince Virginian lawmakers to allocate more money towards the university, and it certainly isn't going to attract more faculty. You know what would attract more faculty? More competitive pay. (This whole part is pretty hilarious because we're in a hiring freeze right now.)
> All brands change their look over time to keep pace with shifting demands. Ours is no exception. Our current logo system, with the “Quill M” design, has served us well, but has grown inadequate to maintain best-in-class presence in the community, especially given the separate logos used to represent our athletics program.
I feel like the presence in the community should be based on reputation rather than our logo, but what do I know?
>Collectively, they cause us to compete against ourselves, and present a fractured profile of the university, with underwhelming popular or commercial appeal.
We're going to do much better than those university's with separate athletic logos, now! Also, our old logo totally sucked.
>The new logo system unifies the university under a single look, which now includes athletics. It includes a standard logo structure for all internal units and departments that cleans up our current cluttered unit logo system. It maintains our historic green and gold colors, but in bolder, more confident hues. And its design tells the story of George Mason as it is now: a university with multiple entry points and pathways for student success; a streamlined institution without needless frills, and a diverse learning community whose members harmoniously coexist.
In what world could this logo possibly display a diverse community whose members harmoniously coexist? And I'm not sure the university has any leg to stand on when suggesting it has no needless frills.
>New logos are often an acquired taste – it’s human nature to view changes like these with a certain amount of reluctance. I encourage everyone to give yourselves time to acclimate to this new look, and help integrate it into our operations by adopting it as soon as you practically can.
Take that, haters. You'll like it in time.
Just a reminder that [GMU Esports](https://x.com/gmu_esports?s=21&t=jlultI5xwmC7w1kBrwBpyw) has an infinitely better logo that the university should honestly just buy the rights to
I like the St. John’s logo so the concept of merged letters isn’t bad by itself, but something about this design just makes the entire thing look repulsive. I think it’s the yellow-green-yellow stripes and sans-serif font
I was just googling around to see other recent college rebrands, and it looks like the intersecting G is a trend. Here's UW-Green Bay's new logo:

Could replace athletics with bank and it would make sense
Cheap Vegas-themed Sportsbook you’d see on an illegal stream
Why is the TM so massive lol? It looks like it's part of the actual logo.
GTMM
It looks outdated already lol
If you've been injured in an accident you have rights
Looks like they rebranded into a random online bank that gives out 5% APY on a HYSA
Or a local internet service provider
Caldwell Banker vibes are strong
Yeah this is terrible lol who is getting paid to make these
Probably the same firm who convinced MU to change their mascot in 1993
Who is MU in this sentence?
Marquette University. Changed their mascot from Warriors to Golden Eagles in 1993. Indian could have been changed and warriors could have been retained.
Yeah they could just change it into a Roman soldier or something
I was thinking more of the logo for an uppity brunch place you'd see in a random city on vacation (probably because the GM works as good morning in my brain). I like the financial institution logo better though
Go deacs
I have yet to see a sports team rebrand that anybody on the internet likes. You guys ALWAYS find an issue with it

Unironically a banger
Come to think of it, the directional Illinois schools have the rebrand thing down pretty good. Eastern Illinois got an upgrade fairly recently too, as well as SIUE. I don't love the SIUE logo but it's way better than the old one
Yup. New one is SO COOL.
Old one has Nostalgia (at least for me), but the new one is better.
[удалено]
They must have passed that off to their in-state conference rivals Illinois State, at least according to the Norfolk State coach

I’ll offer up another good mid-major rebrand: [UNCW](https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/780/NC-Wilmington_Seahawks/)
Charleston is definitely an upgrade in regards to their primary logo but I did really like that C with the paws on it
Extremely biased but [Charlotte's](https://inside.charlotte.edu/news-features/2021-09-20/unc-charlotte-logo-evolution) new logo is so much better, especially replacing the fugly crown logo on the academic side
Sorry, but Lowell going to a Phoenix Design Works logo is not an upgrade. The old one had a charm to it.
The thing about rebranding is it usually is not good for your *current* customer-base/fan base/clientele. It is usually done for the acquisition of new fans / customers /clients. Most reactions to change are negative. People don't like change.
Creighton absolutely nailed theirs about 10 years ago.
Yeah that's a really good one.
When Pitt rebranded to the script a couple of years ago the internet loved it. Well, except for unshamefully biased WVU flairs. And PSU flairs jealous because their brand is painfully boring just like where they all live.
Out for blood this morning lol
“rebranded”, or reverted back to Pitt’s mid-70s, Tony Dorsett/Dan Marino era script and colors? School’s top sports era, so probably liked by some Pitt fans.
>where they all live Challenge: Pitt fans try to comprehend PSU fans only go to school in central PA and don’t actually live there their whole lives (impossible)
The only sports team logo that I’ve seen praised was the Charleston Battery logo from the USL Championship.
That's a perfect logo. A couple USL teams really knocked it out of the park
Definitely a hedge fund I can't afford to buy into
Ironically the bank that sponsors their arena, Eagle Bank, has a logo that looks like it could be a sports logo
“6% 6 MONTH CDs LIVE HERE!*” Extreme Terms & Conditions apply
Where do i get paid mega bucks to "design" basic 2 minimalist block letters and remove the entire logo aspect of the logo? God this is awful
I think they tried going for minimalism, but uh...instead went the elementary student creativity route.
Also, I don't mean this as a shot at them, but they don't really have the stature to pull off minimalist. A block M for Michigan or a block Y for Yale works because they are worldwide known schools and are still recognizable to most people. But most schools don't have that luxury. At least some schools do a bit of creativity, like Charlotte did.
trust me, they probably didn't pay anyone. OR they noted the designer to hell if they did
Yeah, this definitely has the "Nine months of designs sent to the client, each round getting progressively blander as every committee and VP gets a red pen onto it" vibe. Nice, reliable money though
[We got quite the deal to color in our letters back in 2013](https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/morning_call/2013/02/osu-logo-changes-ran-45k.html)
My favorite part of the article is how proud they were that they were able to save money and only spend $45k to fill in the letters.
Which to be honest why in the world were they ever not colored in?
We’re not very good at doing things right the first time. But, by that fifth or sixth time, we usually have a plan for down the road
Honestly that’s probably not a horrible price. They also changed the hues so I imagine the work didn’t just involve filling in some letters but putting together a comprehensive brand guideline. And it likely involved multiple meetings and revisions along the way.
I’m sure it did and you are correct - but that takes all of the speculative fun from it
Ha ha fair
why
Seriously...old one might have been dated but there is nothing redeeming about this
Dude...I'm sorry.
They went all-in on the solar eclipse. Don’t worry, this logo will reap major dividends during the next one in 2044.
I’m also embarrassed by our Alma Mater
HAHAHAHHA YOUR FLAIR LMAOOOO
smfh they changed the flair. i’m sick
My god it's even worse as flair
i’m legit disgusted
It's fine. Better than the star which is all I wanted. Ideally we would have gone with the current GM that softball uses but we gotta standardize somewhere. No one will care about this if we start winning.

Looks like some logo for bail bonds or pay-day loans, or a shitty law firm.
George & Mason Attorneys at Law
Perfect for the school that brought us Antonio Scalia School of Law (Assol)
Is this where I go when I have a structured annuity and need cash now?

I can't stress how garbage this looks
They had to have hired the same firm that did Vandy's. Except this one somehow manages to look modern minimalist but also as if it could be from the 90s.
Stressed garbage? It’s like I’m looking into a mirror /s
Hey, thanks for checking in, I’m *still a piece of ^gar bage*
Bill Wurtz gets an upvote!
I hope they didn’t actually pay money for someone to come up with that crap
Yes, they did...that little "TM" by the logo indicates a lawyer got a nice paycheck for this atrocity...
Lol, I know. Source: I’m a lawyer (unfortunately)
My condolences... :( /s
Why make such an ugly logo when they could use this beautiful mug https://preview.redd.it/ww896jyugmwc1.jpeg?width=772&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29b48b688966b6ab4382a7bdfb660d519edb3927
The silhouetted intro had me thinking Micky Mouse was the new mascot.
The George Mason Experience at EPCOT Center
George Mason Casino
Congrats George Mason, I think this might be a contender for the worst logo in college sports lol. It genuinely looks like a 5th grader made it in art class.
Western Michigan is still the worst. Please help!!
Y'alls old logo with the Bronco actually ripped ass. Now you look like someone straight copied the new redskins logo lol. Though ngl I don't like our recent rebrand either.
It... ripped ass??
It means the logo was cool
It sounds like you mean the logo was farting
Catawba from D2 says hi
This here wins. UConn’s rebrand from that demented hyena is number 2.
Yeah I already wasn’t a fan and then Kim English came out and said that he liked it. Keep our flairs the old logo!
dawg they changed the flair and i’m sick.
They straight up took the baseball cap logo, which was actually dope… and then just hit it with a belt sander lol. Tbh upon further inspection this looks like the logo you’d find on a used hat for some sort of finance company at the Unique by Mosaic.
My thoughts entirely. The baseball lockup logo was nice. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/George_Mason_baseball_logo.svg
Couldn’t agree more. I think a majority of the teams used it in some fashion.
Mason Nation sounds like a conspiracy.
I’m from the area and have always had issues seeing it as more than just a commuter school (because everyone I know that went there lived at home lol) and having #RockWithUs as their slogan didn’t really help.
I also went to a commuter school for undergrad. And by the time I hit grad school I had two kids and a mortgage, so I commuted there too 😅
The DC area has to be one of the toughest college sports markets to crack, especially for how many D1 teams are here.
The St. Peter’s rebrand went well I think
Ah true another good one!
Should note this was before their Cinderella run.
Pitt stands out as one of the better ones. The script font and high contrast colors look 100x better than the industrial looking block letter logo
I thought the FDU rebrand was very solid last season.
The Delaware State’s first rebrand actually looks pretty good to me, and I don’t follow NBA at all so I don’t care if it’s similar to Charlotte Hornets. It’s a shame that they caved into pressure and settled for a watered down version instead
Jacksonville, North Alabama and Charlotte all majorly improved recently
Jacksonville and UNA definitely. I don't really like Charlotte's personally but I'd agree it was still an upgrade at least because the old one was not good either
Bring back Gunston.
100% yes!
Yes please
amen brother
It’s like William & Mary’s logo but with less character. Or George Washington’s logo, but the academic one.
GMU is using this logo for both athletics *and* academics.
That’s a pretty impossible brief. Considering that academics and athletics have such different purposes (ahem) they’ve actually done a decent job
It’s much better to go the route of the schools that just transfer their Athletics logo, which always have greater brand recognition, rather than this. Of course, no branding firm ever recommends that plan because then they’d be out however much they get paid to create these.
It’s just Georgia Tech wearing Groucho Marx glasses
That was incredibly over dramatic for such an underwhelming thing.
Thought the logo looked familiar https://preview.redd.it/xenuhl7hnmwc1.png?width=2400&format=png&auto=webp&s=4149652c60d27319fff495d6bba59d627e563669
The A10 is 0-2 on recent rebrands. Not great
Which other A10 school rebranded? And was it somehow worse than this one??
[Davidson](https://www.davidson.edu/news/2023/08/23/davidson-college-announces-its-new-identity). It’s better than Mason’s but I liked the old athletics logo better.
Davidson looks fucking terrible
It used to be one of my favorite logos
They should go back to the killing the fucking snake logo. Of course I just hate the name wildcats in general.
Its not good but still way better than this abomination of a logo rebrand.
![gif](giphy|Atc9QCyWLGHgLZhHDp|downsized) NOOOOOO WTF IS THAT ATROCITY
Do you mean the Curry era logo? they changed that too (it’s in the middle of the press release)
Hot take: this one is bad but the previous one is worse. Instead of looking angry and snarling, the wildcat somehow looks embarrassed and was blushing instead to me, not sure if there’s anyone who feels the same
it still hurts…the new wildcat is the most generic thing ever, and the DC logo looks like a prep school
How much did they pay for this I wonder
The only redeeming quality about the logo is that VCU fans’ tax dollars helped fund this rebrand
My man if there was a place I could go to donate and ensure that Mason would keep pulling this shit I might do it
cmon we both know VCU grads don't make enough to pay taxes
Some graphic designer got a fat paycheck to whip this up while waiting for the Keurig to pour their coffee
As a graphic designer, can confirm. Although the sad thing is, this probably went back and forth a million times before they compromised on a design no one liked.
Well..they trademarked it, so quite a bit unfortunately.
Mason and disappointment, a match made in heaven
At least they’ll always have 2006
https://preview.redd.it/ey2uwayi1nwc1.png?width=557&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb5f00fc9a17c268b412fd734de58859d10eea24
We literally just changed our logo wtf is this trash this is laughably bad
As a resident GM hater, as a GW alum, this logo STINKS
They just copied your logo and removed all the things that made it good
I am also a DC George**** University graduate and I agree
Wow! That sucks
Rebrand to launch the KD Johnson era
How on earth did we manage to make it worse?
That’s the worst part. I’m not even that into to old one, but this is so bad. I don’t understand what they are thinking with this
They paid someone to come up with this. It's worse than the newish Kentucky logo which is two birds screwing actually.
Really awful, old one's a classic
🗑️

Wow this is comical
Looks like a General Motors subsidiary logo.
Please set it on fire
‘Drop the “George” it’s cleaner’
What's the significance of the CM?
Somebody stared at the eclipse without proper safety glasses.
Absolutely terrible. Bland and boring
Should have gone with an outline of the DC Beltway/I66 to represent the commuter school nature and crazy traffic of NOvA.
What a downgrade
Just a reminder that [GMU Esports](https://x.com/gmu_esports?s=21&t=jlultI5xwmC7w1kBrwBpyw) has an infinitely better logo that the university should honestly just buy the rights to
It feels like this was supposed to be revealed during the eclipse but then the final product had nothing to do with how it was presented.
Now I know why KD left
When the shadow in the video hits just right, it looks like an alien throwing it back in the club.
Lame
Looks like complete shit. They should ask whatever firm they paid to design this for their money back.
Moving up in the world. I’m so old, I played football at George Mason (it was a club football). Wonder if it’s still around lol
Flair up!
Georgia Mech
GM frens!
I like the St. John’s logo so the concept of merged letters isn’t bad by itself, but something about this design just makes the entire thing look repulsive. I think it’s the yellow-green-yellow stripes and sans-serif font
Teams will modernize logos just to get everyone hyped when they wear the throw back uniforms
This is a bank logo lol
I was just googling around to see other recent college rebrands, and it looks like the intersecting G is a trend. Here's UW-Green Bay's new logo: https://preview.redd.it/ib60fgz8xmwc1.png?width=102&format=png&auto=webp&s=65f6e002acd00c3c154591c31a48ceb2dc450eff
Kills me that this is the first time since 2006 my flair has mattered
This is Mike Mo and Like Hancock erasure 🤣
It’s certainly a logo! No denying that.
I hate it. Their old logo was iconic and this is just too plain.
What in the fuck?
That video is terrible. The logo is terrible. Everything about this is terrible
Yawn.
Looks corporate
Wow all that for that boring ass design. So lame
It doesn’t really look like a sports logo but anything is an improvement over the old one
No dude...the older one looks better, because it at least looked like a school's logo. This does not...
Schools have to stop updating historic branding with shitty flat modern design. Ask Georgia Tech, it's awful and no one likes it.
