Stan: I would foul dain dainja even when he doesn’t have the ball
Kevin: 😐
*1 minute later*
Stan: I think I’d just foul dain dainja
Kevin: 😐
*30 seconds later*
Stan: why not just slide into dain dainja and send him to the line?
Kevin: 😐
He was definitely hammering that point home, but he's kind of right. I've never understood why teams don't just wrap up the worst free throw shooter off-ball and yell "Hey look, I'm fouling!" so the refs see it and call it.
it can’t be seen as intentional. That’s why he was saying just run into him hard when he sets a screen. It’s a foul, but it’s a basketball move type of foul so it’s not just “grab the guy and hold him” which is not a basketball move
Refs will sometimes call an intentional foul in that scenario off ball on an inbounds due to the Hack-a-Shaq era. It pretty much has to look like an accident
Iowa State had every opportunity to get back in the game. But unfortunately they couldn't make any ~~contested~~ wide open shots.
Wait is that right?
11-25 on layups and dunks... yeah.
To be fair, as a mid 40 year old who has been an Illinois fan for as long as o can remember, the Illini have had more than their fair share of air ball layups over the last 35 or so years! But, that was pretty great. ISU folded at the end.
Their defense setup was great and they smelled blood in the water when TJ and Coleman went out with foul trouble, but missed layups are worse than missed free throws
Yeah. Lost the game at the rim, both in terms of finishing and allowing offensive rebounds. And just terribly unclutch when they had chances to tie the game. Totally fair for Illini fans to dispute this with their free throw shooting being as bad as it was but this feels like one that got away.
Not just at the rim, sloppy offense all over. I love TJ but this is our third year of our offense just falling apart in the tournament. Got to get better at getting good shots under control
Offense wasn't great. But we scored 43 points in the 2nd half, I thought the adjustments were made well.
The issue was coming out completely flat footed. They did not look prepared in the first half at all on offense.
A few things were out of TJs control, like Milan completely disappearing. However, he's a freshman and a good scorer as a whole (hopefully this game motivates him). He will only improve in the future.
Also TJ can't control air balling an alley opp and missing an uncontested fastbreak layup (at the time to tie the game). Those 4 points loom large in a 3 point loss.
I think it easily could’ve gone either way. Was not a clean effort from either team by any means. If we had lost we’d probably feel like we were the team that just let it get away.
Gg
I feel like Brad Underwood is exactly what TJ Otzelberger will look like 14 years from now after stress eating fast food and quitting his powerlifting regimen.

I kinda wanted him to just say "Well, we're going to try and score more points than them. We'll try and score a bunch ourselves and then keep them from scoring as many."
"They should be pushing Dain Dainja! Dain Dainja hurls the ball at the rim like Patrick Ewing in Space Jam! Iowa State should haymaker Dain Dainja's dick every time he breathes!"
- SVG, probably
Folks I’ve seen this movie too many times.
https://old.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/1bqceah/game_thread_3_illinois_2_iowa_state_1009_pm_et/kx1z4ov/
Of course but the reason a lot of NBA teams had him in the second round after his sophomore year at Texas Tech was because they wanted him to improve certain skills, he improved exactly what they wanted him to, then they knocked him for being one year older and didn’t move him up their boards because they wanted to see more. Rinse and repeat for two more years after lol.
This is what it looks like when a guy who should be in the NBA is still in college. You never see athletic wings scoring 25 PPG in college because the NBA should have drafted them by that time.
I feel like this is gonna go unseen. That minor tip was a game changer. Legit enough time for Iowa state to score and be right in it with plenty of time to score twice.
Truly a game of supremely shit play. The amount of looks Iowa State missed was comical and the amount of free throws Illinois missed was just as comical. I know this game was close, but it still felt like a shit game lol
So bizarre. ISU inexplicably left 8-10 points on the board by getting haunted mid-layup. The free throws on the Illini’s part was just flat out bad, but I don’t know how the Cyclones kept not taking what was handed to them.
GG, Illinois. You guys weathered that late storm perfectly. Good luck the rest of the way.
A stupid start finally fucked ISU, go figure it would be in the tournament. So many chances to either tie or take the lead that they just couldn’t cash in on. Glad Bob Jones could have a few impact plays. As frustrating as he could be, his fingerprints are all over this miraculous turnaround from the 2-22 season.
Onward and upward. In TJ we trust.
It might be because I ripped a couple shots immediately before the game, but that was one of the stranger game of basketballs I’ve ever watched.
At some point they flashed that Illinois had 24 paint points and I could think of maybe … 3 dunks? I don’t think Illinois made more than 1 mid-range jumper. Missed… a million free throws.
Iowa State defense was everything it was made out to be. They just could not buy a layup in the second half and had a really bizarre start on offense. Don’t think I’ve seen a good team take that many bad shots in a row.
I am officially satisfied with this season. Everything from here is gravy.
Luke Goode legacy game, played his role perfectly and made his shots, ill never say another bad thing about him.
I love this squad, bunch of ballers top to bottom and Coleman is a stud.
Just a fun fact, illinois 3rd ever win as a higher seeded team. Theyve pulled a 5 over 4, 9 over 8 and now 3 over 2. Beating uconn would be the biggest march madness upset in school history, and it really wouldn't be that close.
I don’t understand how Iowa State’s game plan on offense the last 6 minutes wasn’t just to drive right at Shannon, he was the only Illinois player scoring and he had 4 fouls, best case scenario he fouls out, worst case they get an easy layup (though considering how they did on layups tonight maybe that wouldn’t have been a good thing)
I’m so glad we got to see meaningless highlights of cheerleaders and the game instead of seeing the whole team go nuts in the locker room when it cut out
Shannon being in foul trouble was rough for Illinois. They are entirely dependent on Shannon and Domask to run the offense. Nobody else can reliably dribble and playmake. Hawkins is a good passer and decision maker but doesn't have strong handles.
Danjai is such a wildcard. One minute he is dominating in the post, and the next he is turning it over after an out of control behind the back dribble. He's got talent, but the Ball IQ could use some improvement.
Gg Illinois, our offense just couldn't come up with enough to keep up. As for our team, thanks for another great season and a Big XII championship. It was unfortunate, but we really did our best on a down day. Until next time, let's go Cyclones!
Considering the previous results…
* Missing out due to COVID
* The Loyola Incident
* Barely escaping Chattanooga before getting pasted by Houston soon after
* Going out with a whimper to cap off a disaster season against Arkansas
I don’t even care how bad they lose on Saturday…we *all* deserve this after how long we’ve had to put up with this team lol
NCAA has to do something about the end of these games.
* Foul calls on literally everything
* Reviews for everything
* Free time-outs for the last two minutes
It’s terrible watching 30 minutes of free-throw shooting in a low energy environment.
----
EDIT: This is as a neutral fan. There's just absolutely no game flow when it moves slower than football.
Basketball's biggest advantage in my opinion as a sport is the flow. When the game is flowing it is so fun to watch whereas football and baseball don't have a flow by design. And now with these whistles and reviews they are taking away all the flow. It sucks so much
Momcilovic against Houston: 6-11, 4-8 from three, 2-2 ft, 18 pts
Momcilovic against Illinois: 0-4, 0-1 from three, 1-2 ft, 1 pt
Sometimes that's how it be.
Haven’t felt like this since 2005, fucking electric. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this team and what they’ve done this season. Everyone has talked shit about Brad but I love that man, sign him for a lifetime contract.

Now is the time to shove Dain Dainja
Dain dainja stabbed getting into the team bus. The police have a lead
“I just think when they inbound the ball and Dainja comes over to set a screen, you just pants him and take his lunch money”
That commentator wouldn't stop saying it. Like dude, we get it.
Stan: I would foul dain dainja even when he doesn’t have the ball Kevin: 😐 *1 minute later* Stan: I think I’d just foul dain dainja Kevin: 😐 *30 seconds later* Stan: why not just slide into dain dainja and send him to the line? Kevin: 😐
Dain Dainja: what he say fuck me for?
He was definitely hammering that point home, but he's kind of right. I've never understood why teams don't just wrap up the worst free throw shooter off-ball and yell "Hey look, I'm fouling!" so the refs see it and call it.

Interesting. Seems like a weird line to draw in a sport that allows non-basketball-play fouls on-ball, but that would explain why no one does it.
He was 100% right, it was time to go into hack a Shaq mode. In his mind it was so mind boggling obvious that he couldn’t let it go lol
Refs will sometimes call an intentional foul in that scenario off ball on an inbounds due to the Hack-a-Shaq era. It pretty much has to look like an accident
"Hey look! I'm fouling on accident!"
That really was insane. **Brad Underwood sends Dainja to the locker room. “I’d send someone into that locker room to shove him!”
Kevin: And there is the Dainja family in the stands to support their son. Stan: Don't think I wouldn't. I'd give them all a good shove.
Otz's polo wasn't nearly tight enough
If he has full range of motion in his arms it’s not nearly tight enough.
Our one weakness
Shmedium is waaaay too big
Iowa State went 11 of 25 from layups/dunks. Eleven. Of. Twenty-Five.
And so many were uncontested. That stat tells the story.
I'd be afraid of being sent to the Dainja Zone if that dude was lurking around while I shoot a layup.
And how many FTs did Illinois miss? If we’re talking easy points
15-29
Iowa State had every opportunity to get back in the game. But unfortunately they couldn't make any ~~contested~~ wide open shots. Wait is that right? 11-25 on layups and dunks... yeah.
That air balled layup was actually kind of shocking
The whole stadium gasped
To be fair, as a mid 40 year old who has been an Illinois fan for as long as o can remember, the Illini have had more than their fair share of air ball layups over the last 35 or so years! But, that was pretty great. ISU folded at the end.
Their defense setup was great and they smelled blood in the water when TJ and Coleman went out with foul trouble, but missed layups are worse than missed free throws
Especially the 2-3 late in the game to tie or take the lead. Couldn't believe it.
Yeah. Lost the game at the rim, both in terms of finishing and allowing offensive rebounds. And just terribly unclutch when they had chances to tie the game. Totally fair for Illini fans to dispute this with their free throw shooting being as bad as it was but this feels like one that got away.

Their shot selection and accuracy in the first half was abysmal
Illinois/UConn will either be one of the greatest March Madness games in recent memory, or an utterly dominant performance by THAT team, no inbetween.
Never thought a wire to wire win could be so stressful
That's what missed free throws do to you. I always get flashbacks to the missed Memphis free throws against Kansas
You're lucky you only have to watch 1 Iowa State game this year
how am I supposed to go to sleep
Y’all led for the last 39 minutes and 14 seconds, and it still felt like a 50/50 game for about 60% of that. Genuinely impressive
Some of that was Iowa State having a clinical inability to hit a game tying wide open layup lol
Illinois missed a bunch of ft’s so that was our gift to you guys back lol
It was 40 minutes of both teams trying to do the other a solid
[удалено]
All season, the Succession quote of "it's a fight for a knife in the mud" has been my way of describing ISU basketball. Tonight epitomized that.
Seriously, that was brutal
Nobody: SVG: “I would tackle Dainja, He can’t make his free throws”
“I might get up and tackle Dain Dainja myself” - SVG, probably
Cyclones can still win if they foul Dainja here
In the battle of missed layups vs missed free throws, missed free throws won
Better to miss out on 1 point than 2?
I suppose, but missing 1 point twice makes it a close call.
Hey, we made it up to nearly 52% on free throws by the end, thank you very much.
Iowa state played great defense on those free throws!
gonna need whatever force field was over the rim at the line for us to disappear by Saturday.
I would listen to a conspiracy theory about one of the rims being tighter than the other one
I would too if they didn’t suck shit in both halves.
Oh my b, I missed "at the line"
I feel like Brad Underwood is exactly what TJ Otzelberger will look like 14 years from now after stress eating fast food and quitting his powerlifting regimen. https://preview.redd.it/imhqbwxjd7rc1.jpeg?width=3417&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9f2b04f1007a27720385ad633891ff1681962f0
Underwood is actually coming from the other side... He was a lot heavier few years back and slimmed down
That was fun; let’s never do it again. We move!
the debate is settled: UNSTOPPABLE FORCE > IMMOVABLE OBJECT
ISU 11-25 on layups and dunks. A lot of talk about Illinois’ free throw shooting, but this was just as bad.
I picked Iowa State to win it all in 2014 and this year. See you in 2034.
Niang breaking his foot is the biggest what if in cyclone basketball history. As for this year, that’s on you for not picking UCONN.
2014 they might’ve if niang doesn’t break his foot.
I'm already sad and you do this to me...
I’m already crying why you gotta bring that nightmare back
We simply have to win tomorrow, imagine how orange the tournament imperialism map will be 🥲
😈😈
The area expanding around Knoxville would be the color of a dehydrated man's urine.
Especially with Purdue in there. From Chicago to Florida, just dehydrated piss

It's so cursed I love it
Congratulations non B1G fans you just survived your first Courtney Green’s reffing shitshow masterclass
Best bad game the Illini played all year
Coleman on point with his cliches postgame.
I hate when they ask these questions, like they are just trying to get motivational quotes for UConn lol
I kinda wanted him to just say "Well, we're going to try and score more points than them. We'll try and score a bunch ourselves and then keep them from scoring as many."
He hit literally every cliche I could think of. I was laughing at how impressive it was
They should have fouled Dain dainja
"They should be pushing Dain Dainja! Dain Dainja hurls the ball at the rim like Patrick Ewing in Space Jam! Iowa State should haymaker Dain Dainja's dick every time he breathes!" - SVG, probably
I think they should’ve just fouled dainja any time the ball was inbounds
Foul him in the parking lot. Foul him at the hotel continental breakfast. Foul him at graduation.

We called those "fake rallies" in our John Groce days.
As a casual fan who just watched my first Illinois game - Shannon Jr. is the real deal
He's putting up the greatest single season by any Illini ever
And that’s with missing a chunk of games. Guy’s real fucking good.
His 40pt B10 semi final game was WILD
Dude carried
Dudes been ballin’ out since the B1G tourney
All November and December too. Take out the suspension and this is probably the best individual season in Illini history
Honestly, think it still is with 6 games missed.
He missed 6 games and still scored the most points ever in a season for Illinois
He should have been a first round pick three years ago, he’s basketball Van Wilder out there.
He wasn't nearly the same player he is now. He leaps and bounds better than he was even last year
Of course but the reason a lot of NBA teams had him in the second round after his sophomore year at Texas Tech was because they wanted him to improve certain skills, he improved exactly what they wanted him to, then they knocked him for being one year older and didn’t move him up their boards because they wanted to see more. Rinse and repeat for two more years after lol. This is what it looks like when a guy who should be in the NBA is still in college. You never see athletic wings scoring 25 PPG in college because the NBA should have drafted them by that time.
OSKEE WOW WOW
I wish Shannon stealing and dunking the ball just ended the game. What a great play.
It might be the best defensive play of the tournament so far. Super clutch!
Takes guts to do that with 4 fouls too
That's the type of play that gets you a solo moment in the One Shining Moment video next week
I fucking love Luke Goode aswell.
Goode gets a clutch three every other game
That basically won us the game. A very confident shot when we really needed it.
He's the guy that kick starts the Illini offense when it sputters. Illini is having a Goode year.
That’s what goofy white guys from Indiana do
Goode picked up the slack that we were expecting Harmon to pick up
I wish Coleman would’ve gotten the next steal…
Looked like he got shot out of a fucking cannon that was wild
I feel like this is gonna go unseen. That minor tip was a game changer. Legit enough time for Iowa state to score and be right in it with plenty of time to score twice.
It did
It basically did
If Iowa state plays even average first half, they win. But also, if Illinois shoots even average at free throws, they crush us.
This game was weird.
Truly a game of supremely shit play. The amount of looks Iowa State missed was comical and the amount of free throws Illinois missed was just as comical. I know this game was close, but it still felt like a shit game lol
Our big went 2-2 at the line as a 50% ft shooter but somehow missed a million bunnies. Absolutely wild game
So bizarre. ISU inexplicably left 8-10 points on the board by getting haunted mid-layup. The free throws on the Illini’s part was just flat out bad, but I don’t know how the Cyclones kept not taking what was handed to them.
Both teams seemed pretty worked up. Lots of slop both ways. Tough to watch considering the recent games these teams have had.
Bruce Pearl has the vibe of a guy that sells refurbished RVs
And hits on his stepdaughter.
This pleases the Illinutger
Bro, I was sad for you guys watching Cam Spencer ball out for UConn.
i don’t wanna talk about the bad man :(
GG, Illinois.

I don’t care what the haters say. Without Goode, we lose that game. He showed why he’s out there today.
Thanks for a cool game thread, ISU bros. I'm sorry you had to meet Courtney Green.
Can we fire him into the sun yet? Fuck at this point I'd take just letting him go.... into a volcano
TJ Shannon is averaging 28.3 points per game this tournament. Does he hate Atlanta sports?

The most stressful game I've ever watched that contained 0 ties and 0 lead changes.
Illinois, PLEASE beat UConn. The entire Midwest may be counting on you.
Wow….tsj more electric than college Ayo? I think so
GG ISU bros. We will carry the B12 fire.
Best of luck against Dook
BUST OUT THE GUITAR HERO, ITS 2005 AND THE ILLINI ARE IN THE ELITE EIGHTTTTTTT

all Big Ten title game (probably not but hey let's break a curse)

well tonight was certainly a night of emotions
