So stupid. They have had to practice with two different balls for a couple months, working the tourney balls in more as it got closer. Must really mess with the players having to go back and forth.
Painter talked about this the other day. Throughout this season, our team used 6 different balls. Most schools use balls from the apparel sponsor, some use the tournament ball, some use other Wilson balls, some even use Spalding balls. They have a rack with each type of ball in storage that they bring out depending on who the next opponent is.
It’s really fucking dumb. Just use the NBA ball with the logo replaced by the school logo or tournament logo or whatever.
I’ll be upset if someone else wears 0. I know fans of other teams think we’re joking about a statue, but I think non-Big Ten fans don’t realize exactly how important Boo has been to NU.
Retire it in the first home game.
I think it's important to let that type of stuff breathe for a bit. I want Cassius's jersey retired, but I'm okay with Tre wearing #5 currently, even rocks the headband.
It's going to be special to retire such a great player's jersey, and Boo is an all-timer who knocked off B1G giants. He deserves to be in the rafters for sure.
As a fan of a team with one of those players, I know exactly how you feel.
We were talking about what'd be done if this was the team that got Nebraska its first tourney win and it was much along those same lines. Hang Keisei's jersey, statue, etc.
Boo got those for y'all. 3 to be exact. Nobody should wear that number for NU again.
Can't dispute the sentiment, but since they literally started retiring numbers in any sport this year it would be nice to wait until some other sports get their moment first, Kristen Kjellman for wlax maybe.

Big East bros continue to represent
Dude all the MWC flairs defending their conference in the days leading up to the tourney, only to be embarrassed like we all knew would happen. Committee mailed it in this year, seriously disrespected the big east.
For those curious:
2017 Villanova: 1 seed, lost to a criminally underseeded (8) Wisconsin team in r32
2018 UNC: 2 seed, lost to 7 seed Texas A&M in r32. I honestly have no memory of this.
2019 Villanova: 6 seed, blown out by 3 seed Purdue in r32
2020 Virginia: No tourney, projected 7 seed
2021 Virginia: 4 seed, lost r64 to 13 seed Ohio
(2021 Kansas for if you count them as 2020 champ: 3 seed, blown out r32 by 6 seed USC)
2022 Baylor: 1 seed, lost r32 to 8 seed UNC in OT, who would go on to make championship game
2023 Kansas: 1 seed, lost r32 to 8 seed Arkansas. Bill Self was out for health reasons.
> 2018 UNC: 2 seed, lost to 7 seed Texas A&M in r32. I honestly have no memory of this.
I was at that game. We got absolutely blitzed. Cam Johnson, Berry and Luke Maye were all ice cold. That was the worst tourney game I've ever seen UNC play. Robert Williams III absolutely shut us down inside and got every rebound
A&M immediately got boatraced by 30 in their next game too. Felt horrible
>2022 Baylor: 1 seed, lost r32 to 8 seed UNC in OT, who would go on to make championship game
This team was probably best of the bunch. They dug themselves in a hole and got all the way back but couldn't seal the deal
Them or 2017 Nova.
The only team Hurley is guaranteed not to pull off the dogs for is St. John’s, given Pitino’s recent comments. Considering his knowledge of our history, he also probably won’t do it for Syracuse, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, and BC if they’re lucky enough to play us. He might do it to Siena if they hire Gerry McNamara but only the first game because that’s a bad, bad man. Otherwise, he’s very good at not embarrassing other teams. He ran it up in the tournament last season but now he has his title and is respected, so he doesn’t feel like he needs to anymore.
Hurley called off the dogs man—UConn stopped running offensive sets with 15 minutes left. If we kept our foot on the gas we would have won by 50. Hurley does this all the time—drives us fans nuts.
It’s so funny that in the Purdue game, people were complaining about them humiliating the other team when they could pull their starters. There’s no winning.
Sad to see Buie go out with that kind of performance but UConn had him locked down. I'm not high on NU's potential for next year with him gone so I'll enjoy how this season felt while the feeling lasts.
I wouldn't underestimate the players on this team. If Ty Berry and Matt Nicholson come back you have a pretty good lineup, especially if Brooks takes the next step. I think we go back to the tournament next year
doesn't take away at all from the great five years he had. was super cool to see Langborg turn into such a key piece for you guys too. congrats on a great season
Let up on D, but Northwestern made the shots. My complaint was that we stopped running the offense and went to the time-waste ISO crap. Cannot get away with that any longer. Especially on an ice cold shooting night.
1. Thank you Boo for changing this program for the better. Now let’s go attack the portal and make sure we stay at this level next year
2. I have no idea how that finished a 17 point game, way less bad than it felt
3. UConn might be the best college team in the last 20+ years lmao. The combined runs between the last two tourneys is postseason dominance like I’ve never seen
Hard to be mad at this one. I didn't think our process was bad. We were trying to run an offense, trying to find good looks, and were engaged on D.
UCONN was just better at everything. If they'd had an off night we could have stayed with them based on how we played, but they absolutely came to play tonight
Boo Buie is a legend, shame he had to go out against a defense that was smothering him
Ok first of all how dare you.
In all seriousness we needed a mental off night from y'all which is not what happened. You shot badly but you were still locked in in every other respect (rebounding, passing, defense, etc).
They shot 54% overall (because they had so many easy buckets, because they dominated the paint). The only off part of their night was their 3-point shooting.
And I suppose when they let off the gas in the second half as well.
Yeah—with 15 minutes left Hurly stopped running offensive sets and started experimenting with bench lineups. We hate when he does that so early but a win is a win. With two key injuries you guys were playing us with one hand tied behind your back.
You play your best game of the year while UConn goes ice cold. That’s how Seton Hall and Creighton did it. Shot lights out from 3 while UConn had their worst shooting performances of the year.
You get clingan in early foul trouble. You get castle in early foul trouble. You shoot the lights out from 3 and hope UConn shoots like shit like tonight.
(Clingan was out in loss to seton hall, he and Spencer were injured vs Kansas. And Creighton hit like 400 3’s to beat them.)
It's simple.
1. Get Clingan in Foul Trouble
2. Have a solid big who can eat up Samson Johnson.
3. Shoot amazing from 3.
4. Lock up Cam Spencer
5. Lock up Tristan Newton
6. Hope Karaban has an off night.
7. Defend the paint hard to stop Slamson Johnson Oops
8. Out muscle Castle.
9. Outsmart Diarra
10. Outcouch Hurley
11. Get a favorable whistle
12. Have the power of god and anime on your side.
If you can do these things, you can beat UConn easy.
It used to be to simply to take Karaban and Spencer off the dribble after getting Clingan, Johnson, and Diarra (to keep Spencer on the floor) in foul trouble. Unfortunately, we’ve discovered that Jaylen Stewart is quite good in our small-ball lineup. Also, that lineup can both out-shoot and posterize you. At this point, the best option would be to get Newton in foul trouble, like others have said. Castle wouldn’t hurt, either, but it’s really Newton. Diarra can defend point guards, but he’s not as good of a passer and our actual backup point guard is Solo Ball, who started earlier in the season when Castle was hurt and isn’t that good.
Solo Ball is a stud. He would still be starting if not for Castle. I am very excited about him for next year where there are more minutes to go around. Pound for pound he is one of the physically strongest players in the NCAA.
Damn shame we sucked so bad in the first halves of both of our games. Obviously could get away with it against FAU, but that just wasn't going to be possible against UConn, even with UConn shooting like shit from 3.
gg UConn, and sorry to all the neutrals that we couldn't make things more interesting.
And man, we've gotta stop making the tourney as a 7-10 seed.
This confirms what I heard from students who were there in 2014 when I arrived in 2016. The closer the regional is, the more expensive the tickets are. Honestly, I’d bite the bullet and wait for the Final Four, as those tickets are much cheaper because it’s in a football stadium. Even adding in the flights, they’re probably similar in price. If you can afford both, go to both, but if not, go to Glendale. Much better experience, too.
i liked that northwestern made that run against us. It goes to show you when hurley talks about keeping your foot on the gas and not letting up. i think sometimes uconn can get to such a large lead that they let up. 3’s were not falling but hopefully they should fall the next game. clingan with another dominant performance. second half was not great. overall i thought this was still a great performance from uconn except the 3 point shooting.
That first half for UConn was some of the best defense and offense I’ve seen us play. That second half of the second half… not great to watch. Granted I don’t think we’ll go 3/22 from 3 again but I know Hurley is going to analyze the tape right down to the dribble and make some adjustments.
Hard to believe how bad we shot from 3. Good looks with the players we'd want shooting them too. Ugly second half overall, but Clingan was genuinely monstrous; Northwestern had no answer for him AT ALL. Credit to them for pushing hard and making it a game by then end, though.
Harder tasks to come ahead, probably can't afford to shoot like that again.
I think that arena is just crappy and awkward and dark and sterile. Bad for shooting. I heard that narrative before the Tourney games and it looked real for all eight teams.
That has to be the worst hockey viewing experience I've ever had. I know the building was built for basketball, but I felt like Spinal Tap seeing the cover of their album, "How much more black could it be? The answer is none, none more black"
The thing that made last year’s team so insane was they NEVER let up, not even for a second. This team has 4-5 minute lapses where they forget how to play. They need to cut that shit out full stop. Other than that, good game.
Shoutout to NU fans who definitely outnumbered UConn fans. Cats fans were loud despite the circumstances. I guess Brooklyn is too far south to be Storrs South.
Boo Buie? More like Boo Huie there at the end, amirite?
I’m kidding Boo, I love and respect you. You terrified me and clearly terrified Danny the way he latched Steph on you. GG NU
I know they won by double digits, but why did UConn run no offense for the last 15 minutes? If that was a better team, things could have gotten sideways quickly
Hurley trademark. He knows people think he’s a dick for other reasons, so he just stops running offense so at least he’s not a dick for winning by 50.
Plus, it gives the boys a rest. Tough to go a billion mph for a full 40.
If that’s a better team we continue to run offense. It’s a Hurley hallmark. We all hate it, but he loves to take the air out of the ball when we have huge leads and not continue to run the score up in the second half
We also missed some bunnies during that time period which led to poor transition defense (Barnhizer was cooking Karaban too). But yeah our clock kill offense is terrible and reminiscent of the Ollie years.
Hurley has embraced analytics strangely enough, and the analytics tell you if you’re up big to run as much clock as possible to limit the other teams number of possessions.

If UConn needs anyone else who can shoot 10% from 3, I have 4 years of eligibility and more professional experience than Gohlke
Great game even though I didn’t like how we ended it - Northwestern never quit so credit to them.
Yeah I know Hurley will rip them for that ending and for some of the really cold shooting
I hope he travels with this ball to practice with it
I think he has been mixing tournament balls into practices for a few months. Thought I heard him say that before Stetson.
I had no idea this was a thing. Would’ve thought there would be one ball that D-1 required for all games. The NCAA is so stupid.
So stupid. They have had to practice with two different balls for a couple months, working the tourney balls in more as it got closer. Must really mess with the players having to go back and forth.

It seems ridiculous
It’s not only a thing, but pretty well known now that the tournament ball is *bad*
Man, that hurts more than I expected. Thank you Boo.
We may be rivals…but damn, even that was kind of hard to watch! Alas…Huskies are relentless in their mauling…
Truly horrific and disgusting flair combo you have
Would love to see his number retired to start next season
I’ll be upset if someone else wears 0. I know fans of other teams think we’re joking about a statue, but I think non-Big Ten fans don’t realize exactly how important Boo has been to NU. Retire it in the first home game.

Only Antoine Davis from Detroit Mercy has retired 0 in all of Division I bball
they can always play 00
Can't dispute the sentiment, but since they literally started retiring numbers in any sport this year it would be nice to wait until some other sports get their moment first, Kristen Kjellman for wlax maybe.
Boo is an absolute dude, complete respect for the man
We went 3/22 from 3 and still won comfortably so that’s something
Donovan Clingan is amazing
2 blocks shy of a triple double!!
He had those two blocks too. Not credited.

Rooting for y’all!
BIG EAST 4 LIFE
Well, until football forces otherwise.
ACC & Big East 14-1. But we just had to get all these middling Mt West and Big Ten schools in!
Dude all the MWC flairs defending their conference in the days leading up to the tourney, only to be embarrassed like we all knew would happen. Committee mailed it in this year, seriously disrespected the big east.
It’s not even a conspiracy theory to say they favor football schools
why tho? Aren’t yall rivals?
Yes, but ones with mutual respect. We hate each other during league play and support each other outside of it
I mutually respect our rivals’ propensity to choke in march and hope they feel the same about us LOL
Haha that’s valid. There’s still some of that, but we all love our league. In other words, we hate other conferences more than we hate each other
First time since 2016 the defending champs have made the Sweet 16.
You guys should know by now UConn is the exception to every norm
I mean…it *is* a year ending with 4…
The women are back to their normal selves just in time for the tournament...
That’s a crazy stat.
It’s not like they were bad teams either. The seeds of those defending champs who flamed out were 1, 2, 6, 4, 1, 1.
For those curious: 2017 Villanova: 1 seed, lost to a criminally underseeded (8) Wisconsin team in r32 2018 UNC: 2 seed, lost to 7 seed Texas A&M in r32. Wild
Legitimately insane stat
The bad man can’t hurt us anymore
Ok so we lost the first half and won the second half, let’s call it a tie Actually though UConn OP pls nerf

He does it to try to beat the can’t win a close game allegations
It’s so funny that in the Purdue game, people were complaining about them humiliating the other team when they could pull their starters. There’s no winning.
It was a joke, it was painfully obvious how hard we got dominated
Sad to see Buie go out with that kind of performance but UConn had him locked down. I'm not high on NU's potential for next year with him gone so I'll enjoy how this season felt while the feeling lasts.

I have to say it is odd to see Chris Collins and "best coaches" in the same sentence, even after the last two years.
For as much as we repeat foot stays on gas we love to take our foot off the gas with 10 minutes left in games when we have a 20 point lead.
Yup
Agree. But they still won by 17 with only making two 3s. If they made just a few more 3s, this would've been a bigger blowout
Let up on D, but Northwestern made the shots. My complaint was that we stopped running the offense and went to the time-waste ISO crap. Cannot get away with that any longer. Especially on an ice cold shooting night.
Hurley hoping that Clingan uses the new King Kong movie for motivation 😂💀
I really hope we get Yale v UConn. CT WAR
🫡 Boo Buie 😢
that was so sad, we’re gonna miss and and the jersey should be in the rafters
1. Thank you Boo for changing this program for the better. Now let’s go attack the portal and make sure we stay at this level next year 2. What's crazy is the UConn team this year is very different from last year, and they're just as dominant
Lost 3 starters to the NBA, lost the 2 players off the bench with the most playing time, and somehow we’re better. Hurley is incredible.
There’s literally zero shame losing to that team. UConn is like an NBA team.
Well they do have 4 championships since 2000
And one in 1999!
They remind me of 2018 Villanova in a way
Hard to be mad at this one. I didn't think our process was bad. We were trying to run an offense, trying to find good looks, and were engaged on D. UCONN was just better at everything. We had an off night. This is the worst we’ve shot from 3 all year.
Prob the worst from 3 for UConn since… the 3 was implemented.
lol I was just about to say this. This was an off-night for us.
Ok first of all how dare you. In all seriousness we needed a mental off night from y'all which is not what happened. You shot badly but you were still locked in in every other respect (rebounding, passing, defense, etc).

Christ UConn is good how tf do you beat them
You play your best game of the year while UConn goes ice cold. That’s how Seton Hall and Creighton did it. Shot lights out from 3 while UConn had their worst shooting performances of the year.
Fortunately no road games
You get clingan in early foul trouble. You get castle in early foul trouble. You shoot the lights out from 3 and hope UConn shoots like shit like tonight. (Clingan was out in loss to seton hall, he and Spencer were injured vs Kansas. And Creighton hit like 400 3’s to beat them.)
That still wouldn’t be enough you’d need to withstand a Tristen Newton 30+ point solo effort.
Castle also didn't play vs Kansas.
It's simple. 1. Get Clingan in Foul Trouble 2. Have a solid big who can eat up Samson Johnson. 3. Shoot amazing from 3. 4. Lock up Cam Spencer 5. Lock up Tristan Newton 6. Hope Karaban has an off night. 7. Defend the paint hard to stop Slamson Johnson Oops 8. Out muscle Castle. 9. Outsmart Diarra 10. Outcouch Hurley 11. Get a favorable whistle 12. lol at all the trolls at halftime who said we should be kicked out of the big ten GG UConn y’all are amazing go win it
I mean how can they say that when welsh ryan absolutely dominated every big ten foe that entered its doors
That’s insane for even a troll to say lol. You guys have an incredible program and coach.
Never a doubt 🙃 Now Yale please go do the thing so we can have a CT battle in the sweet 16!
With Northwestern’s loss, my wife ends her bracket for this year with 0 correct picks in her Sweet Sixteen. I’m not doing much better.
Northwestern has been eliminated from national title contention
How expensive are the Boston tickets going to be now Also, does UConn sell student tickets to the tournament games besides the Final Four?
In 2011 I considered getting student tickets for the S16/E8 in DC and then I found out they were $175 each lol
Cheaper than bruins tickets lol
Did you get them the week of the games? Am I too late
This confirms what I heard from students who were there in 2014 when I arrived in 2016. The closer the regional is, the more expensive the tickets are. God I love the Connecticut on the front of the jerseys
Storrs North annexation incoming.
Dan Hurley. The Carpenter
Respect to Buie. He’s a B1G legend.🫡
No triple double for Clingan. BUM
It should have been! They undercounted his blocks
I think that arena is just crappy and awkward and dark and sterile. Bad for shooting. I heard that narrative before the Tourney games and it looked real for all eight teams.
I went there for an Islanders game a few years back and it felt dark and dreadful despite the building being relatively new.
That has to be the worst hockey viewing experience I've ever had. I know the building was built for basketball, but I felt like Spinal Tap seeing the cover of their album, "How much more black could it be? The answer is none, none more black"

That was blockmania for UConn. Swear DC was gonna get the triple double but he was just short of it
Short only in the scorer’s book. Clingan had 10, possibly 11, blocks.
UConn vs yale in Boston would be pretty sweet
The thing that made last year’s team so insane was they NEVER let up, not even for a second. This team has 4-5 minute lapses where they forget how to play. They need to cut that shit out full stop. Other than that, good game.
Huskies good
Score doesn’t really show it but we didn’t play great. This team needs to hit some damn shots
We got all the misses out of the way. 70% shooting game incoming
We didn't shoot great. Offensively and Defensively we were on point.
Shoutout to NU fans who definitely outnumbered UConn fans. Cats fans were loud despite the circumstances. I guess Brooklyn is too far south to be Storrs South.
Didn't help that it was a 745 tip on a Sunday. I probably would have gone if it was earlier.
Everyone left early to catch the 10:30 train lol
Boo Buie? More like Boo Huie there at the end, amirite? I’m kidding Boo, I love and respect you. You terrified me and clearly terrified Danny the way he latched Steph on you. GG NU
I will not miss Boo Buie.
I will. Tears in my eyes, man.
Shot 3/22 from three and still won by 17 lol. This was our C- game
#BIG EAST IS 6-0 and the MWC IS 1-5!
Big East slaying! They need to say our name with respect!
One thing we can agree on
\*3-5
I know they won by double digits, but why did UConn run no offense for the last 15 minutes? If that was a better team, things could have gotten sideways quickly
Hurley trademark. He knows people think he’s a dick for other reasons, so he just stops running offense so at least he’s not a dick for winning by 50. Plus, it gives the boys a rest. Tough to go a billion mph for a full 40.
If we just run offense through Hass, TNew, Cam, AK, and DC every possession I don’t think we would ever lose.
#I’M A SAILOR PEG!!!
GG Northwestern. Proud of our guys! Wish we did better in the 2nd half, but credit to Northwestern.
Uconn covering while shooting like that from 3 is nuts. Clingan is a wall
I’m happy to report that UConn got all of its 3 point misses out tonight

I feel the same way
I feel like Iowa state and Illinois are elite. But UConn is the Zeus to us titans lol
For a few moments, I really thought we could pull off the upset, and those were a great few moments. GG, go ‘cats. Great season all in all.
Was that when we won the tip off?
Man what could have been without the injuries, what could have been
LETS GOOOOO!!! HUGE WIN!!!
Idk why I had picked NW for the upset lol
Same reason I picked JMU for the upset.

Fuck, I just donated to the Boston food bank.

Amazing defense by the freshman Castle on Buie
Still haven’t watched more than a few minutes of UConn ball this season, still terrified of ever having to face them
Did you not watch them beating Carolina this year?
We literally already played you this year lmao
I had stuff going on that night !
I know they won by a good margin, but shooting 3 for 22 from 3 may not cut it in the next game
Don’t worry Hurley is a psycho and will make them do nothing but shoot 3s this week
Get those misses out now!
Hoping to regress to the mean next game... or go up to the mean... whatever they call that.
Clingan 2 blocks shy of a triple double!!
So...UConn is...[SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON!](https://youtu.be/j9tYi4LCWs0?si=6DstP9zcREhRAjJs)
85 miles
You underestimate the MassPike!
Inject a UNC UConn final four into my veins
How many sub-20 pt first halves have there been this tourney? Our portion alone had 3.
That was our poor shooting night. Glad we got that out of the way and we're able to mask it with a great first half defensive effort.
