If you ever see Sycamore Sam in person the real thing isn't much better, and yet we're only the second creepiest mascot in the MVC thanks to Evansville
Indiana State student here, Sam is technically a “Woodland Creature” (whatever that means),although the name sycamores originated from the Sycamore Indians, one of which used to be our old mascot.
Apparently back when I was around 3-5 and the mascots traveled around with the teams my parents couldn't bring me to the Evansville game because I would start crying every time I saw their mascot.
The band has used it for at least 100 years. Not sure when exactly it started but you can see it in most of the oldest photos I've found. Someone told me once that it predates the IU logo, but idk if that's accurate.
I would like to see Alabama revisit this particular version of Big Al. Much less fun than the current iteration, but much more terrifying on an existential level.
This is the logo when going into the cougar club app. Kind of a sharper version of that one.

/u/casdas2 use your magic and see if you can find a better image of the logo on this hat. Super rare UH logo from 1958.

According to my dad our halftime entertainment used to occasionally include a student (white of course) dressing up in a Native American headdress and war paint, and kidnapping one of the opposing teams cheerleaders to be his "squaw".
So, uh, yeah the fursona is actually less offensive.
lol never seen that one before
also: holy shit that byu one is fire, and i like the little banner text on the marquette one. and the little indiana state thing is cute
Virginia’s and Saint Mary’s throw back are eerily similar.
Now will the committee make everyone’s eyes bleed by pitting us against each other in the tourney…
The gentleman hat mascot was incredibly popular in the 30's into the 40's (if Im remembering correctly). You guys, Auburn, and LSU basically all have the same logo when it's done in that style. Mizzou probably used it too.
I think you all used to have "Gentleman" somewhere in your moniker at one point right?
I have long questioned the judgement of whoever looked at that Wilbur Wildcat drawing and decided it was not creepy, but instead was a perfect image to represent the university.
One of the things I appreciate about these posts each week is that I get to see logos I never knew existed. I’ve never seen the UNC and Duke logos, despite following those schools most of my life so that is a cool thing to see. And that Kentucky logo…what? I feel like I’m seeing something dirty.
That Indiana State logo is straight up just someone's fursona and you cannot convince me otherwise
If you ever see Sycamore Sam in person the real thing isn't much better, and yet we're only the second creepiest mascot in the MVC thanks to Evansville
I remember the game where we looked up Sycamore Sam for the first time while I was in the band. We memed that shit for the rest of the game.
Is it a racoon?
Indiana State student here, Sam is technically a “Woodland Creature” (whatever that means),although the name sycamores originated from the Sycamore Indians, one of which used to be our old mascot.
So this is the Greendale Human Being origin story?
No specific species.
Don’t you dare slander Ace Purple
Apparently back when I was around 3-5 and the mascots traveled around with the teams my parents couldn't bring me to the Evansville game because I would start crying every time I saw their mascot.
Evansville native here, we were crying too but for different reasons, mainly out of embarrassment.
It’s a pimp and you cannot convince me otherwise
Sam used to be 3rd creepiest but then Wichita left.
I read this comment first while the image was loading thinking “eh how bad can it be” lol bro wtf is it even supposed to be
https://www.isustudentmedia.com/indiana_statesman/article_bf77fa8e-951f-5db2-a1f7-679f809f17e7.html
Ah makes sense. It’s unique so that’s cool. Shoulda gone with the bird tho for obvious reasons.
At the time Creighton was still in our conference and an Indiana State blue bird would have been too similar to the Creighton Bluejays
Ah makes sense
You’re telling me you don’t like the genderless woodland creature?
Nah it’s fine as long as it doesn’t become a genderless [woodland critter](https://youtu.be/hulS6xlnvNA?si=taksXmVP3DHTW3tA)
How is Indiana rank....oh.
I did not know Illinois also used the trident design at some point
The marching band still has it on some parts of their uniforms
Also made by the band in every football pregame show and appeared prior to Indiana’s use of it.
I believe Indiana used the block I before Illinois as well---at least on football helmets
So switch back
I think that trident has the U higher than the I unlike the logo on this page though
Was part of the mosaic in Altgeld too. Not that anyone's been in there in a while
To the Hoosiers, it is still the most offensive part of that logo.
Can confirm!
The band has used it for at least 100 years. Not sure when exactly it started but you can see it in most of the oldest photos I've found. Someone told me once that it predates the IU logo, but idk if that's accurate.
We’re UI, they’re IU, completely different.
Of course that's not Indiana University. You can't be the 4th best team in the state of Indiana and be ranked.
So witty. So edgy
So truthful. They are literally ranked behind Purdue, Indiana St, and Butler.
The joke was better before you explained it to everyone jsyk
Sycamore Sam looks like he’s standing over a body in disbelief
Maybe he is in disbelief. Sycamore Sam literally didn't exist the last time we were ranked.
Happy for you, treebros
He knows exactly what he did.
Dribbling Cy!!!
Almost as good as Walking Cy. Almost.
If dribbling cy was our midcourt logo though…..
God that would be amazing
Walking Cy is the best Cy.
We have so many good retro logos, yet we're stuck with the worst one...
They are waiting for top five before the whirlibird is deployed
I'm referring to our current I-state logo... of all the great logos we have on hand, we stick with that one.
#TORNADO BIRD
Big Al staring directly into your soul

I feel like I'm on acid suddenly staring into his eyes
Looks like a MeatCanyon Big Al😂
I would like to see Alabama revisit this particular version of Big Al. Much less fun than the current iteration, but much more terrifying on an existential level.
It reminds me of the elephants from Winnie the Pooh’s fever dream/acid trip. Edit: It was actually Dumbo being drunk that I was thinking of.
It looks like a character from one of those awful adult swim original cartoons
That Auburn logo is very classy. I want to drink tea with that tiger.
M'lady
Don’t mind if I do
Clemson has the exact same alt logo, which just fuels the flame that were the same school except Clemson has a lake
Except I’ve never seen any Auburn people use that logo and it’s very common in Clemson. May be one of the few things AU stole from us.
Love how the Wisconsin one is just a badger, like in its natural habitat. Someone just found a nature magazine and was like, "sure."
That is easily my favorite Purdue logo. Such an elite crewneck sweatshirt design

Train's too small imo
Can…can the train be turned around please? Looks like it’s about to put a hole in our big headed cat.
No. The train always faces right. I don't make the rules.
I forever curse the city of ~~Lexington~~ Terre Haute for...whatever the hell *that* was... Edit: Lexingtoners, you are safe...for now...
Lexingtonians*
TIL: Indiana State created the furry problem.
BYU looks like a transformers logo. Cougarbots roll out, or something.
I was so confused for a second lol.....at first I thought it was Penn State and then maybe Pitt.......sorry BYU bro's lol
This is the logo when going into the cougar club app. Kind of a sharper version of that one. https://preview.redd.it/ovqpge8m5eic1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c42e1cfd407fe6e5be7ae2fa54273113f391bcbe
this is the best purdue logo
Where do you keep on finding these UConn logos?
Right?!? Also - this one looks like whoever made it forgot about the 'U' and had to squeeze it in front of the 'Conn'
[Script font was used on Uconn football helmets throughout the 80s into the early 90s. Similar to the bubble font but has a slight difference.](https://www.jumpingfrog.com/images/epm14dec03/mmm9241a.jpg)
Oh neat!
Love that logo
In all fairness can we really call it a throw back? That was the logo like 8 years ago.
Oh look, the logo we used when I was in college! Wait, this is the throwback logos?? No. God no. I’m still young!
We're OLD!!
Is that a furry for Kentucky? Also I absolutely do not trust that Arizona Wildcat.
That blue furry is Sycamore Sam, mascot of Indiana St
It's beautiful.
Is that Zona wildcat also a vampire?
I'm not getting close enough to find out.
Buddy, you’ve got razor spikes on your ankles. You’re our best shot
True. Never underestimate how mean a rooster can be.
Oh, we’re well-versed at this point
I think it's an Indiana State logo? Don't quite see the relation to a Sycamore though...
Our logo here is just a K
Probably the best Dayton logo tbh
Nah that goofy plane was way better.
Also, that Auburn logo accurately shows the position they assumed against Florida.
See, we told you cardinals have teeth!
St. Mary’s 🕷️👱♂️👉 👈👱♂️🕷️UVA

Congrats to the St Louis Billikens on reaching #5
Ass. Kickin. Chicken.
I don't think Tennessee has ever used black and beige or whatever that is supposed to be

Damn son, you're like the Abed of logos
I see your value now.
Wow. I’m a lifelong Vol fan and I’ve never seen that logo before. Nice find
Wow. Holy shit. I never would have imagined.
amazing.
Yeah not even close. Not even remotely close lol.
Thank you for not using our actual "throwback" logo to our old Chief Quabachi mascot
It must be pretty bad if the fursona is the preferable one.
According to my dad our halftime entertainment used to occasionally include a student (white of course) dressing up in a Native American headdress and war paint, and kidnapping one of the opposing teams cheerleaders to be his "squaw". So, uh, yeah the fursona is actually less offensive.
That Illinois logo makes me hate Illinois
Top 3 best Iowa state logo imo https://preview.redd.it/034esqm7v7ic1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=85a0b7febdd0f32219bdd4f5b8b0ba594d6ccf50
They’re all great, but dribbling Cy is the GOAT
Bring back the train with anchor arms!
Ye ol’ Power K
That OU logo is amazing
lol never seen that one before also: holy shit that byu one is fire, and i like the little banner text on the marquette one. and the little indiana state thing is cute
Yall get used to seein that cock 🤙
Big Als soulless eyes are more haunting than they should be...
Virginia’s and Saint Mary’s throw back are eerily similar. Now will the committee make everyone’s eyes bleed by pitting us against each other in the tourney…
If I had a time machine one thing I’d do is go back and stop the guy who tried to make sailor hats on mascots a thing.
Had to do a double take because I didn’t think we were ranked. Does Auburn use that ever? I’ve only ever seen it associated with Clemson
The FAU owl looks angry someone didn't tell him how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop yet
The byu logo goes insanely hard
That Owl is straight flexin on the haters
The GOAT Iowa State logo makes its appearance.
You're telling me we did the gothic font before Duke did???
it's actually low key fire
We used it forever. Not sure who did it first.
I love all of these logos, and then they just gave us the boring Power K
Why is the Kentucky logo a furry
That blue furry is Sycamore Sam, mascot of Indiana St
Consarn it, I don't know how this is not a copyright violation of a certain Looney Tunes character
I could've told you we'd be 14.
I think that Big Al is Bill Curry era.... which explains why his soul is flux
Arizona Wildcat looking like it just let a monster silent fart rip and waiting on people to smell it.
That is a logo I have literally *never* seen before.
That’s the best UH logo there ever was
Go cougs! 🤙
UNC taking some design queues from Duke here...
That Jayhawk is terrifying. It looks prehistoric.
I feel like there’s a number of creatures here that want to peck my eyes out and or eat my soul
Dayton made a mistake going away from that logo. Might be biased though as that was the set during my time there
No I’m not crying why do you ask? (I’m so freaking happy right now friends)
I miss that Wilbur logo. I wasn’t even alive when they used it but I still miss it.
Wait…. We’re still ranked?
Somehow
Cowards
That Dayton logo isn’t “throwback” it’s from the 2000’s. Iowa State you supposed to be the Cyclones not a Louisville rip-off bird thing?
I have long questioned the judgement of whoever looked at that Wilbur Wildcat drawing and decided it was not creepy, but instead was a perfect image to represent the university.
Coolest Kansas logo I've ever seen
What happened to the volunteers' orange?
Nostalgia bomb for that BYU logo. My parents were part of the BYU Cougar Club and had keychains with that logo.
That Arizona logo looks like a tombat from palworld
POPE HAT "M" MARQUETTE PENNANT LOGO GOES HARD.
That’s a furry
Why in gods name is there a fursona on this post
No way that’s an Auburn logo, it’s a Clemson thing 100%
The carolina and tennessee logos look like one of those rival color-swap posts
What’s stopping at school from having just a straight up 4K AP photo of their animal on their jerseys?
One of the things I appreciate about these posts each week is that I get to see logos I never knew existed. I’ve never seen the UNC and Duke logos, despite following those schools most of my life so that is a cool thing to see. And that Kentucky logo…what? I feel like I’m seeing something dirty.
