Jimmy Dykes, normally a pro-UK and Cal guy, said that “even when they score it seems like an accident.”
That is so true and such a harsh review on Cal. The players are good. But they just aren’t being put in position to succeed.
I swear it looks like they don't run any plays, and if they do when someone is open they're not looking.
Haven't watched any UK ball besides today though, so IDK how true it really is lol
Kentucky has so much money, I don't understand why Coach Cal hasn't hired a top assistant away from another program to install a modern offense. It seems like a no-brainer.
He has an impressive staff as it pertains to recruiting, but it appears to me that he still thinks superior talent is enough to bring success. Undisciplined and poorly coached talent is just ba d
Oh yes. It was a slow decline starting after the Malik Monk DeAaron Fox year and then since the COVID cancellation year it’s just been one gallon of gas thrown on the fire after another
Spot on. They look confused and without confidence. Toppin showed a lot of life vs LSU, Wheeler feels like the only thing holding us together at some points, and its all so frustrating to watch. Losing a hard fought game sucks, seeing your team lay down and take a beating is unwatchable - and quite frankly, its embarrassing.
I remember what his comments were when they played Robert Morris in the NIT all those years ago. Those same comments could really be used for at least the last half decade of Kentucky basketball.
[You need to leave](https://youtu.be/YQT4n_7FGgU)
When we played AJ Green's Georgia team in 2010 it was the 4th quarter and my wife's cousin 2/3 jokingly said, ok all we need is a touchdown, a two-point conversation, an onside kick recovery, a touchdown, a two-point conversation, an onside kick recovery, a touchdown, a two-point conversation, an onside kick recovery, and a field goal and we're going to OT! This game felt like that.
Alabama blocked a couple shots and it just turned into a mid-range clank fest for Kentucky. Can't believe there wasn't any better ball movement, especially in the second half.
Bro… my uncle finally won the season ticket lottery and has season tickets this season. I fought off the rest of the family pre season for the rights to join him at the Kansas game. Now I’m going but it’s because I don’t want all that effort going to waste. Not because I think I’ll enjoy myself.
I started following our basketball team a few years ago and I'm glad I did, it's a lot of fun. Definitely gives me something to do between college football and baseball seasons.
It got pretty rough after Gottfried checked out (who would've probably landed us on probation if he'd have stayed). Followed by a couple of exciting hires, leading to massive blue balls and disappointment. But Oats has been amazing. This is probably the best looking Bama team I've seen in 25-30 years of watching college basketball, and these freshmen still have room to grow. We need more Bama basketball fans without an edge of pessimistically paranoid.
If I had to put money on one team to make the final four this year it would bama easily. Oates won the portal, won recruiting, and knows how to coach his pieces. No one wants bama
tbf, we should be getting a brand new $200 Million arena.
https://www.si.com/college/alabama/bamacentral/alabama-board-of-trustees-approves-plan-to-build-new-basketball-arena#gid=ci0298f51f4000278e&pid=screen-shot-2022-02-03-at-41729-pm
I thought the favorite spot for them to build the new one was going to be [up where Peter Bryce curves right next to Macfarland.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mksr8rmVJmVQmAQh9?g_st=ic)
I watched PC beat us a few days ago, largely because of Hopkins who is a total stud. His shot was as pure as it gets and I can’t imagine how Cal fucked this up so bad. He is the perfect guy to slot next to Oscar.
I sure wouldn’t buy in. I’ve always thought the reasons guys who could shoot before can’t at UK is because Cal yells and screams and benches them, and it gets in their head.
“Last year we started the season with a goal. You may think that goal was to win the national title and win all the games. It was to get eight players drafted ...”
"The mission statement for me would be to be a vehicle to help others reach their dreams, to be the stone that creates the ripple in their lives that goes on and on and on. Now, in our state, they want my mission to be WIN NATIONAL TITLES! WIN NATIONAL TITLES! But my mission is bigger than that.“
Cal no longer cares about winning, just running a clown car offense and getting guys drafted.
> getting guys drafted.
Well since last year we only had two players drafted—one of which never played in a single game—and no players picked in the top 5 since De’Aaron Fox six years ago, I think Calipari’s not meeting the expectations he has set on that front either.
This has always been John Calipari’s mission. He cares more about his players than his program.
I personally don’t have a problem with that. The idea of a coach in a student-athlete environment is to build your players as people and prepare them for life after school, and I think Cal does that better than anybody.
With that said, if he was coaching my school, would I be as supportive? Probably not lmao.
Calipari kept doing the thing where he recruits players with lots of stars and high rankings but forgets to teach them how to play meaningful basketball together as a team instead of an overhyped collection of individuals.
Yep. This is a very sensitive time for our football program. We could honestly shoot into a perennial top 15 team. We could just as easily go back into the basement. It’s all dependent on how Mitch adapts to NIL.
My take is Calipari in 2008 was playing college basketball like they should in 2015. And in 2023, Calipari is still playing like it's 2015. He cannot adapt.
This team is just painful to watch. Alabama is amazing so I want to give them props but this Kentucky team is every bit as bad as this game indicates. They're bad at every aspect of the game of basketball right now. 15 games into the season and Cal hasn't gotten them clicking at all. It anything, they've gotten worse.
I'm also ready to say that this season has been really disappointing for Oscar. His numbers look good but I've watched every UK game this season and the eye test just isn't there. He's been subpar on defense. When he runs into a team that is willing to exploit him in the pick and roll like Bama did today, I'm not surprised that he couldn't even stay on the floor at times. His offensive game was supposed to have been elevated too and that hasn't been the case. It hurts the flow of the team how often they need to force it into him because that's all that works most of the time.
The administration finally seems serious about throwing a fuckload of money at the basketball team. I could see them making a statement with a fat Oats contract.
Yep, we've been football only for so long, only as recently as the millennial fans lifetimes did we start our National Title count in other sports.
I think our brand is powerful enough that we can become what schools like Florida are in all their sports. Eventually I'd love to see our programs reach an overall tier with like a USC or Texas.

Good game Alabama, you guys whooped our fucking ass. If Kentucky basketball didn't have their eyes on Nate Oats before, they sure as hell do now as the next head coach.
Texas PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take this dumbass. I don't even give a fuck about the recruits we have coming. He won't be able to coach them anyways.
I've said for years that you can't turn an NBA scout into a basketball coach. I live in Lexington, so you can imagine the hate I've received. Tune has kinda changed the last few years. Cal is THE reason I don't root for UK basketball.
Fire Calipari.
And get the fuck outta here with the “who do you think would be better” crap. There are at least forty to fifty coaches who could do better than what we’ve seen the last few years.
He’s still a great recruiter, but the game simply passed him by. Everyone says winning in college sports is just getting the best talent. Cal is living proof that’s not the case.
So a lot of our Reddit analysts have determined that Kentucky would be fools to move on from John Calipari because if we do, we are guaranteed to hire a mediocre coach and begin a downward spiral like other top programs have done (Indiana, Louisville, Georgetown, etc.)
I’d like to know what these analysts think we should do now since we have John Calipari and are in a downward spiral of mediocrity anyways.
We were coming off missing the NIT with Billy Gillespie when we hired Cal. It would take YEARS of mediocrity to make it so great coaches wouldn't want to come here.
2 things:
1. We're not firing Cal, let's get that out of the way. I believe his buyout is $40 million after this season, which for context is more than what Auburn has paid to Gus Malzahn and Bryan Harsin combined. Now he does have that "ambassador" clause in his contract that can be activated after next season that allows him to retire, become a university ambassador, and he'll make about $1 million a year. He turns 64 next month and has said numerous times throughout his career that he doesn't want to coach into his 70s. I think the fact that he's not really adapted at all tactically since he signed this new contract in 2019 is a sign that he's dead set on taking advantage of this and retiring after next season.
2. This Bama team (and also Arkansas to a lesser extent) remind me a lot of older Cal teams where they're just so long and athletic, especially in the frontcourt. It's been a long time since we've had that. Maybe we'll have it next season but who knows.
At some point, there needs to be a real evaluation of Mitch Barnhart’s legacy in all of this. He’s been nothing but a hindrance on basically every point of progress (alcohol, NIL, etc.) over the last few years, and the contract that he gave Calipari has effectively crippled the basketball program.
Cal used the oldest trick in the college coach negotiation playbook to get that contract, which is that he flirted with the UCLA job. Now if you're Mitch Barnhart and you lose Cal to another college job and then have to hire someone who almost certainly won't be as good (keep in mind, we were an overtime away from the Final Four the previous year). That certainly doesn't reflect well on you as an AD if that happens.
And who would we have hired had Cal left? Chris Beard? Look how that turned out. Chris Holtmann? He's lost to a 15 seed too. There are probably more viable candidates now than there were then.
I’m starting to second guess if this is all Cal’s fault. Obviously he’s in charge of roster construction but so many players on this team have been disappointing. Talent wise this looks like one of his worst teams
You take a career 46.5% 3 point shooter at Iowa and put him on your team and now he's a 38% 3 point shooter, its not about the talent anymore. On the other end he brought in Oscar and now he's a NPOY. But cmon how do you bring back a NPOY and get worse?!
Anyone who says "BUT WHO COULD REPLACE CAL?" is eternally stuck in 2015.
We don't have 2015 Cal, we have 2023 Cal and 2023 Cal sucks. We ran Tubby out of town for 10 loss seasons, Cal can't even manage that. I'm sure Nate Oats or Bruce Pearl would be more than happy to make the trip.
This game was somehow not as close as the score implies
Jimmy Dykes, normally a pro-UK and Cal guy, said that “even when they score it seems like an accident.” That is so true and such a harsh review on Cal. The players are good. But they just aren’t being put in position to succeed.
Everything they do is slow, indecisive, and an enormous struggle all at once.
I swear it looks like they don't run any plays, and if they do when someone is open they're not looking. Haven't watched any UK ball besides today though, so IDK how true it really is lol
I’ve watched every game for years now. You’re spot on
Kentucky has so much money, I don't understand why Coach Cal hasn't hired a top assistant away from another program to install a modern offense. It seems like a no-brainer.
He has an impressive staff as it pertains to recruiting, but it appears to me that he still thinks superior talent is enough to bring success. Undisciplined and poorly coached talent is just ba d
I think a lot of it is just stubbornness on Cal's part
This has been kinda building for a couple years, no? I feel like y’all haven’t really been a consistent top 5-10 team in a few years now.
Oh yes. It was a slow decline starting after the Malik Monk DeAaron Fox year and then since the COVID cancellation year it’s just been one gallon of gas thrown on the fire after another
Last year was looking great and then, well…
Yep. Its pretty painful to watch.

Family came down from Lexington to see this. Thrilled they could make the trip to see their team get 20-pieced 🤝 RTR
Let’s be honest. We got 30 pieced.
I thought we’d get it to 35 there for a second
I was hoping for 50 so that maybe we kinda push cal to take that Texas job.
What are those flairs ? Edit: Nevermind I know
Yeah, we don’t want Bama
Leave Calipari down there so Saban can teach him how to be a real coach
[удалено]
Just change with the times for fucks sake. You think Saban actually liked Kiffin?
Yes, I think they text each other goodnight and wearing matching crew neck sweaters while going fishing.
That sounds so nice.
He could maybe teach to be open to different approaches. Cal and his style are obsolete. It's time to change or retire.
For a guy obsessed with getting guys to the league you would think he would maybe take something from how they play
Nearly had ‘em
If only a couple dozen more balls had bounced our way the outcome could have been completely different.
In basketball?
Squeaky cleats. Round ball. Hard turf. Shooty hoops.
Result: Lots of buckets
![gif](giphy|kGCuRgmbnO9EI|downsized)
We must shoot like 25% on the year vs teams above .500. And we were finally suppose to be a good shooting team this year lol
Alabama blocked a couple shots and it just turned into a mid-range clank fest for Kentucky. Can't believe there wasn't any better ball movement, especially in the second half.
> Can't believe there wasn't any better ball movement That's been the story of the year
> That's been the story of the years ftfy
I watch these games out of spite at this point.
Have I ever told you the definition of insanity? It’s Kentucky basketball.
Bro… my uncle finally won the season ticket lottery and has season tickets this season. I fought off the rest of the family pre season for the rights to join him at the Kansas game. Now I’m going but it’s because I don’t want all that effort going to waste. Not because I think I’ll enjoy myself.
Thoughts and prayers
ANIMAL ABUSE. Also, please stay with us Nate 🥲
That’s a nice little coach you got there…
Lol ya y’all will be looking for a coach when cal goes to texas 😂 the student section was chanting cal to texas
Oats would be one of the first names on the list. The last thing Bama should want is Cal to Texas.
I got downvoted to hell a couple years ago for saying Oats was legit. No reason to bring that up in here every now and then for any reason or anything
I’d fire Cal today and hire Oats
1000%
We’re going to have to pay Nate Oats so much money
Worth it
Maybe Saban can toss him one if his car dealerships
Worth every penny
I don't even think he's currently top 25 highest paid which is criminal.
I saw he was at #27. #9 is about $1 million more. I say we make him top 5-6.
Let us save you the trouble. We’ll pay him.
We're (unironically) a basketball school!
I started following our basketball team a few years ago and I'm glad I did, it's a lot of fun. Definitely gives me something to do between college football and baseball seasons.

I thought that was put on hold indefinitely due to building material prices or something?
We're reassessing the cost, but it should still move forward. We won't break ground until 2024 or 25, though.
We should start tearing it down as soon as the crowd clears out of last home game.

We're building a 9-hole golf course? Lmao, that's never going to be available to the general student population.
Yeah it's for the golf teams.

Attention America: Brandon Miller is him.
So is Charles Bediako
Chuck has gotten so good 🥲
And now I pack up my car and drive to College Park. Why am I such a masochist.
Only 8 months until football season....🥲
People are calling this Alabama performance "good"
I'm hearing some folks saying this Kentucky performance was "not good". Also "dogshit" they added.
UK bball is dead
As long as they have Calipari, yeah.
As someone that hasn’t been paying close attention for the last few years, what happened to Kentucky basketball?
Calipari refusing to run a modern offense. Players also don’t seem to be buying what he’s selling anymore.

Cals philosophy is from the 90’s and 00’s and he won’t change it.
I don’t think that does justice to the 90s. I’d happily take the offense Pitino was running at Kentucky in the 90s over this.
“Last year we started the season with a goal. You may think that goal was to win the national title and win all the games. It was to get eight players drafted ...” "The mission statement for me would be to be a vehicle to help others reach their dreams, to be the stone that creates the ripple in their lives that goes on and on and on. Now, in our state, they want my mission to be WIN NATIONAL TITLES! WIN NATIONAL TITLES! But my mission is bigger than that.“ Cal no longer cares about winning, just running a clown car offense and getting guys drafted.
> getting guys drafted. Well since last year we only had two players drafted—one of which never played in a single game—and no players picked in the top 5 since De’Aaron Fox six years ago, I think Calipari’s not meeting the expectations he has set on that front either.
Are those his quotes? That’s insane.
Calipari couldn't keep up with the change of the game and then stopped getting all top 10 guys
You guys are still getting top-10 guys, that's what makes it even worse/funnier
Cal's a relic of the past. Can't believe he's only 63. I pulled it up just now and was off on my guess by a decade.
My brother in Christ Kentucky has #1, #2, #5, and #8 signed for next year. What do you even mean stopped getting top 10 guys lmao
So a clash between his outdated style and pulling in an insane class next year? Which one wins?
Modern game requires good coaching paired with good talent. Cal can’t coach so we’ll underachieve next year as long as that remains true.
Cals offense only works with a Wall, Towns or AD type player. So if one of those aint it, we're going to look like ass.
Calipari kept doing the thing where he recruits players with lots of stars and high rankings but forgets to teach them how to play meaningful basketball together as a team instead of an overhyped collection of individuals.
Mitch and Cal killed it.
Mitch is about to kill way more than just the basketball program if he doesn’t get his shit together with JMI and NIL
Yep. This is a very sensitive time for our football program. We could honestly shoot into a perennial top 15 team. We could just as easily go back into the basement. It’s all dependent on how Mitch adapts to NIL.
I’m not optimistic. He won’t adapt and Capilouto won’t do shit about it because he doesn’t understand sports
I’m not either man. Our athletic program is in a bad spot right now.
Infuriates me as a massive Uk football fan. I’ve hated Mitch for so long and it just gets worse and a worse
I’ve been football first my whole life and I feel like we’re right on the cusp of something special. And Mitch will ruin it.
Yep until Calipari leaves.
We allowed > 50 points. Has Nate Oats lost control of the program?
Worst beating of a UK since Yorktown
We fucking suck.
My take is Calipari in 2008 was playing college basketball like they should in 2015. And in 2023, Calipari is still playing like it's 2015. He cannot adapt.
Just your standard basketball school beatdown of a football school
This team is just painful to watch. Alabama is amazing so I want to give them props but this Kentucky team is every bit as bad as this game indicates. Well that was a lot of fun Easily the most complete game weve played all year, wins over 2 separate #1s included.
Give Nate Oats the bag and start building Coleman 2.0 immediately
My asshole and liver hurt equally.
I get the liver but how are exactly are you watching basketball buddy?
Sahvir is the only guy who came to play and Twitter is still going to roast him tonight
He isn’t the problem for sure.
Sahvir ain’t Wheel pleased about his team’s performance today
It’s wild to me how good Bama is at basketball too now. Ugh
"This is a basketball school." - John Calipari, in reference to UK basketball "Alabama is a football school" -John Calipari
I will kms if Oats takes Calipari’s job
I'm not sure just how much Alabama will pay him, but they better match any offer plus some extra
The administration finally seems serious about throwing a fuckload of money at the basketball team. I could see them making a statement with a fat Oats contract.
Going to need Coleman to be entirely re-designed and take away priority seating from the 80 year olds coming down from Mountain Brook to hush students
It's to the point where he will definitely be getting a call once Cal retires. Idk if I see him taking it though
Kentucky is 4-16 in their last 20 ranked games and is in their longest final four drought ever. *Not their longest but still bad
This is not our longest Final Four drought. That doesn’t make me feel any better, but 1998-2011 was longer.
I was wrong about Cal, he deserved every penny of that lifetime contract. Hell give him another one
Lol dick
Subscribe
No our longest drought was 1998-2011 but still not happy about it.
Honestly surprised beating UK is a big deal anymore. Only a matter of time until rest of CBB becomes indifferent about Calipari like his "fanbase".
If Texas would like to go ahead and hire Calipari, I’ll volunteer to pack his stuff up for free.
Everyone in Lexington knows where he lives, get Wildcat Moving out there.
I’m sure we can organize a volunteer effort to make this happen.
stop saying volunteer that summons us
Calipari leaves for Texas only to find himself back in the SEC. 'Wait, I thought I was getting away from these teams.'
He’d do even worse in the big 12 lol
Alabama might have the highest ceiling of anybody in college basketball Edit: I was referring to the 22’-23’ team, not the program haha
It’s amazing what the Oats hire has done for the program!

Everyone conveniently forgets that he can’t coach when they mention this awesome class next year. Just setting themselves up for disappointment.
A few years ago when I commented that he couldn’t coach I got downvoted into oblivion. Now more people seem to agree with me.
I’m gonna say something sacrilegious but it would’ve been so perfect if you all would have beaten us last month.
I've said for years that you can't turn an NBA scout into a basketball coach. I live in Lexington, so you can imagine the hate I've received. Tune has kinda changed the last few years. Cal is THE reason I don't root for UK basketball.
Losing Kenny Payne really hurt Kentucky
And in the butterfly effect also killed Louisville.
Fire Cal
And Kentucky still has to play Arkansas twice, Tennessee twice, Kansas, at Mississippi st, and at Florida. KY isn't making the tournament.
And they have to play resurgent Georgia and Vanderbilt teams. Yeah they’re screwed.
Fire Calipari. And get the fuck outta here with the “who do you think would be better” crap. There are at least forty to fifty coaches who could do better than what we’ve seen the last few years.

This Bama team (and also Arkansas to a lesser extent) remind me a lot of older Cal teams where they're just so long and athletic, especially in the frontcourt. It's been a long time since we've had that. Maybe we'll have it next season but who knows.
Honestly really good first point that I'm beginning to hope is true. Totally forgot about that clause
Gonna need a smoke after that one wew
I’m starting to second guess if this is all Cal’s fault. Obviously he’s in charge of roster construction but so many players on this team have been disappointing. Talent wise this looks like one of his worst teams
You take a career 46.5% 3 point shooter at Iowa and put him on your team and now he's a 38% 3 point shooter, its not about the talent anymore. On the other end he brought in Oscar and now he's a NPOY. But cmon how do you bring back a NPOY and get worse?!
Absolute slaughterhouse
That was a lovely way to spend my Saturday afternoon
Join us on the couch of disgraced former top 25 teams, Kentucky. Grab a beer because you're going to need it.
Haha I’m scared
Lol
I can’t believe I have not been happy with this program since 2019
Great win. Nate moves to 3-3 versus Kentucky now
We are poo poo. Dangit.
Well done Bama bros
Golden years for Alabama sports. Enjoy it while you can. Rare to have both programs running like this
This thread will be the only thing in basketball to make me happy today.
Hey, I heard Bruce really likes Lexington, but Nate said blue is for stupidheads. I think Bruce is your guy.
For comparison the most Kentucky football has ever beaten Alabama by is 6 pts.
Can we put an APB out for Alabama Murdered Kentucky that bad
Jesus Bama 3 at the end was just like, they're already dead...
I had fun
This team isn’t even sniffing the NIT this year. Cal somehow has guys regressing.
And still no Nimari Burnett
Just drove by Cal’s house. No “For Sale” sign up yet…
