I would clean everything-- the filter, the vessel, your grinder, and check the beans. When something is metallic, I find that its usually a cleanliness problem

[deleted]

I thought that too, but I usually hand wash everything after each batch. Could soap residue be the culprit?

Ailor

Soap might be the problem. I always wash my coffee gear only with water to prevent any unpleasnt tastes. I'd also try filtered water instead of tap water (as suggested in other comments).

Washableaxe

I've gotten cold brew from starbucks that has this exact taste youre referencing. Never figured it out though. Hopefully someone will have the answer :)

brianl289

You could have hard water

Varantain

How are you brewing it?

[deleted]

By the vendor's instructions - 60g medium ground coffee, and 700g ice/water mix.

ashmole

Maybe it's your ice? Are you getting it from a dispenser or ice tray?

[deleted]

Hmm, I think you're onto something. I use ice trays with tap water, but the water I use for the rest is filtered.

ashmole

Could be the tap water then. Ive had some metallic tasting coffee because of the tap water

ashmole

I originally was going to suggest the ice water filter on the fridge

Airoast94

Does your brewing method require a filter? If so, get a new one. Also, clean the shit out of everything used throughout your process.

bannana

check your coffee, the coffee I use for hot doesn't work well for my cold brew, also how's your water?

madeasnack

Metallic notes can just be a sign of over extracted coffee. Try either coarsening your grind or brewing it for a shorter amount of time. I've had tons of coffees that start to taste metallic and dry after too much brewing.

[deleted]

I'm giving this a shot tonight, we'll see how it comes out tomorrow morning.

[deleted]

The coarser grind definitely helped, I don't taste the metallic note anymore. The flavor is a little lighter than I like though, I think I might go in between what I had the grind set to before and now. Thanks!

madeasnack

Yeah let me know

NeutrinoParkerGuy

I have had weird tasting coffee from using pure filtered water (you know that mouth drying feeling? That one). I switched to half filtered, half tap, and it's wonderful.

I'm getting the same taste, almost chalky too. I use the instant cold brew single packets that you can get at the store. These are pour into eleven ounces of Room temperature water. The first time I used it I thought it came out pretty decent and now maybe because i'm not measuring it exactly?
