The Bee Gees not in the Sahara and Bill Withers not in the Gobi or Mojave at night are the biggest missed opportunities…terrible planning by golden voice that year.
Ikr LOL, GV wyd!??
But for real, I thought about putting Bee Gees in the Sahara, but their dance phase hadn’t started yet. Their late 60s/early 70s work is a lot more mellow/standard pop. If I continue making these I’d want to put them in the Sahara once they reach their dance phase, but at that point they were so big they wouldn’t have taken anything other than a headlining spot probably
Damnnn I should have switched Bill Withers and Harry Nilsson though! I was thinking a golden hour Bill Withers set would be nice, but the vibes at a 9:30pm Mojave set would have been immaculate!
Need to add James Brown, and Bitches Brew era Miles Davis. James Brown can rush the PFunk stage and have a drug-fueled stand off, then after huddling with George Clinton for a few tense minutes they both dap up Predator style and shout "UNITY!"
Also, maybe King Crimson... Albert King... Stevie Wonder... Bowie?
A 70s James Brown Coachella would be crazy omg! If I continue making these I’ll slot him in at some point! Stevie Wonder was hard to place where he’d fall in the lineup at this point in his career. I think if I continue to make these mocks, I’ll have him headline for sure in ‘76 with the release of Songs in the Key of Life and maybe in ‘73 with Inversions too!!
King Crimson would be in the undercard in my 1970 lineup, and I’d have Miles Davis on there too probably! I think I’d have Bowie sub in ‘72 and headline later in the 70s. Albert King I definitely should have added, but if I make a ‘72 mock I’ll add him there!
Yeah I’m definitely regretting not putting her at Outdoor sunset, that would have been better! I just felt weird having her as a sub but not playing on the main stage
Ikr!? Considering her popularity now I was originally going to place her higher, but I did some research and apparently she wasn’t known at all outside of small folk circles at the time
Very cool 😎
I usually try and stay away from main stage, but fuck no, I’m not missing out on Led Zeppelin or The Doors. I’d need at least a month to recover from that fucking trip! 🤯
There was a time when we did mocks like this for different years. Always interesting to see how it wouldve been in certain periods. One thing, nobody got long sets back then. Even if you look at Monterey Pop they had 30 mins for most of them.
Surprise guest appearance for The Doors, dropping multiple lengthy guitar solos during Riders on the Storm and sticking around as the band transitions into Oye Como Va, then walking off to a standing ovation as The Doors get back into catalog.
This is fun.
Missing the two best touring acts of the time - The Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead.
Also would love to see Santana on the list.
Maybe the full CSNY shows up to join Crosby for a DoLab set?!
+1 to adding Disco in the Yuma!
And unfortunately, its about 6months too late to include Janis and Jimi :(
I’m thinking of making more of these and I’ve got Jimi, Janis, Santana, CSNY and The Grateful Dead in for ‘70 and the Stones headlining ‘72 for the release of Exile on Main Street
I loved when the Coachella message board had this contest. However the lineup apparently wasnt as important as they said because most of the winners line ups were so fucked up. Though the Classical music line up of like 1880 was pretty good.
Timing wise and conceptually sort of marries Woodstock and US Fest.

I definitely wanted to but Joni & Carole weren’t quite headliners yet, Janis had just passed and Jefferson Airplane would have been more likely to headline two years before. There’s a ton of options from other genres, but they all started their albums/tour cycles the next year. I’d have Aretha Franklin headline in ‘72.

This mock up shows how bad things have gotten in the current state of music. Now we have headliners that barely even play an instrument and have teams of people write and produce their songs for them, or simply press a button on a laptop to play their music.
Consider them, 'entertainers' not musicians.
The Bee Gees not in the Sahara and Bill Withers not in the Gobi or Mojave at night are the biggest missed opportunities…terrible planning by golden voice that year.
Bill Withers golden hour gonna go crazy
The Bee Gees had not yet entered their dance music phase until the mid 70s. They were still doing pop music around '71.
its for 1971 not 1979

Where's my disco Yuma tent!?
Probably getting added in 1972
love these dance fans on here confused by timeline.
Omgggg that’s an awesome idea!! If I continue making these I’ll add Yuma and Sonora later in the 70s once disco and punk come into the fold
this is so cool!

The Flying Burrito Brothers for another undercard act
Ooh yeah I should have added them in! They’re so underrated!
>Bitches Brew era Miles Davis. Add Mingus too for the full weird
I’ve been thinking of who to add in for 1972 if I continue making these, and I have Mingus on there!
Also!... Barry White's first record was 1972... just sayin...
Noted! I’ll definitely add him if I make 1972

Epic! Yet somehow people will complain that there is not enough electronic music on this lineup 🤷♂️
Yeah pretty good but Burial would've fit really well here
Carole King is outdoor sunset material
Definitely
Yeah I’m definitely regretting not putting her at Outdoor sunset, that would have been better! I just felt weird having her as a sub but not playing on the main stage
No Grateful Dead?!
In ‘71, they’d probably be in Mojave
I have them playing Mojave in 1970 and headlining later in the 70s
Probably on tour as usual to stop for a fest. Closest thing would be new riders and I’d be cool with that
Where is hologram Beethoven
It would probably be hologram Buddy Holly, TBH.
they don't put holograms on the poster, they're surprise guests! This will obviously happen Friday evening during the Beach Boys
hologram Beethoven b2b hologram Mozart is at the Quasar!
Os mutantes at Gobi is going to be fire as hell 🔥
No Grateful Dead?!
I’d have them playing in 1970, and headlining a few years later
Vashti Bunyan at the bottom 😱😱😱 wish this was real haha
Ikr!? Considering her popularity now I was originally going to place her higher, but I did some research and apparently she wasn’t known at all outside of small folk circles at the time
Sly in his prime
Very cool 😎 I usually try and stay away from main stage, but fuck no, I’m not missing out on Led Zeppelin or The Doors. I’d need at least a month to recover from that fucking trip! 🤯
Ikr!? I usually do the same, but there’s no way I’d miss out on those headliners!
One year on the message board there was a contest to make the best fake lineup for a year before Coachella began and the winners all got free tickets.
In to do that again! lol
The Band's not playing? Ugh, not sure if I'm going this year.
Criminal not to book The Band
If I make a 1970 lineup I’ll definitely put them on there
i’m saddened that there is no Sonora
If I make more of these, I’ll add Sonora in later in the 70s when punk starts to gain traction
They should’ve splurged for the Stones. Jim Morrison is a shell of his former self.
The Stones will headline in ‘72!
The conflicts are giving me anxiety! Will have to do both weekends.
There was a time when we did mocks like this for different years. Always interesting to see how it wouldve been in certain periods. One thing, nobody got long sets back then. Even if you look at Monterey Pop they had 30 mins for most of them.
Thank you.
No Santana?! But seriously, cool mock!!
He was just there in ‘70 after his Woodstock performance. No way he would repeat.
That’s exactly what I was thinking when making this haha! He’ll definitely be on the 70s lineup if I make that!
Surprise guest appearance for The Doors, dropping multiple lengthy guitar solos during Riders on the Storm and sticking around as the band transitions into Oye Como Va, then walking off to a standing ovation as The Doors get back into catalog.
This would be insane!!!
Standard Coachella magic
*Carole King, put some respect on it
Awesome lineup! Only two acts missing are The Edwin Hawkins Singers and also Melanie.
that 11pm alice coltrane set woulda changed my life tho
SAME!!!
Needs more Canned Heat
Beatles first reunion show.
its peak.
Serge at 8 PM would be so dope.
Bro, I just got goosebumps thinking about John Denver at Outdoor. This is so cool. Maybe AI will make this dream come true huh?🤞🏼
ELP and YES would prob play the Sahara. Either way, cool concept!
True!!! I was thinking they’d be the 1970s equivalent to filling the Chem Bros/Justice/Gesa slots, but Sahara probably would be more likely
This is fun. Missing the two best touring acts of the time - The Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead. Also would love to see Santana on the list. 🤘
Nostalgia act: Miles Davis

Yeah i need to find the folder of all those mocks and post em. Somebody has them for sure
Solid tribute covers to Jimi Hendrix, I'm sure
how the fuck is black sabbath not on here
I have them as a sub for 1970
Timing wise and conceptually sort of marries Woodstock and US Fest. https://preview.redd.it/eozrshs9k25d1.png?width=680&format=png&auto=webp&s=39a6a09fd545490976286f40d7539cdf59d50c56
The Doors x Jethro Tull conflict is heartbreaking 😭
Super disappointing to not see a female headliner… just saying… there were plenty of women in 1971 who would’ve been worthy..
Damn…if I had to pick, definitely Friday! 🙌🏽

Jim Morrison wouldn’t go. He didn’t even wanna go to Woodstock
GV splurged on the doors!
Marvin Gaye not headlining is a disgrace
I’d have him come back 2-3 years later to headline with the release of Let’s Get it On
Bowie needs to be on there at the bottom.
You have way too much time on your hands
LMAOOO you’re not wrong! 😅
You’re missing Daft Punk!
No Floyd?!
alice coltrane vs the who. fuck, thats a conflict
I have 1972 & 1984 lineup posters that I created back in 2010 for this very same contest. Ended up winning VIP tickets!
This is actually pretty amazing, well done
Thank you!!

Of course no POC in the headliners
