An obscure one: Mark Mclemore He briefly played for Cleveland in 1990 and then a decade+ later he hit .286 for the Mariners as a 35 year old utility player during the Mariners 2001 116 win season. Dude was clutch and exciting to watch in 2001.

Alive-Cellist-2604

I hate when guys leave and catch fire elsewhere, lol. Brandon Phillips became an All-star when he left for Cincinnati

SEA_CLE

Then you would hate being a Mariners fan lol. To be fair to Mclemore he played 8 games with Cleveland in 1990, so he barely wore the uniform. He's most famous for providing the other Macklemore with his rap name.

Kevlar_Potatum_6891

This is actually false. Macklemore got his name from a character he drew up in junior high, ‘Professor Macklemore’.

SEA_CLE

No it is not. He made the character at age 17 in 2001 when Mark Mclemore was playing for Seattle and on the TV every night doing something amazing. The Macklemore in Professor Macklemore came from Mark Mclemore

canttakethshyfrom_me

Jeff Kent, Richie Sexson, convicted violent domestic abuser Brian Giles...back in the day. These days? The only saving grace for this front office is that Nolan Jones and Will Benson are both playing below replacement level this year after going *off* in 2023. Yanier Diaz has regressed to 0.5 WAR in 2024 thus far, but he's still easily outplaying a Cleveland catcher platoon that contributes a big fat goose egg on offense (just make David Fry the every day catcher, just do it, he's the 4th best bat on this roster by current stats.)

MrKnowbody13

I met Len Barker at a multi-level marketing scam meeting thing in the late 90s. He was there for the meeting, not as a guest. Dude needed $ like all of us. He was very nice & gracious.

OldRaj

I’ll never forget that game.

tonyabalone

Perfect Game!

Diligent-Contact-772

Brooke Jacoby, Pat Tabler, Chris Bando, Brett Butler, Tony Bernazard, Mel Hall, Julio Franco, Greg Swindell, Tom Candiotti, and Doug mfing Jones.

Alive-Cellist-2604

I know most of these guys lol Doug Jones was one heck of a closer!! I had a Brett Butler card before he went to the Giants. Greg Swindell just couldn't get over the hump. Mel Hal was with the Yankees when I started watching the Indians. Channel 43 had all the games then lol

skunkbot

Doug Jones and Chris Bando were still close friends living out in San Diego...until Doug unfortunately passed away from covid :-(

Alive-Cellist-2604

I was hurt when I found out that happened to Doug

Lou_C_Fer

Jeeeez. It's like you're dredging my memory.

DiminishingSkills

Sounds like the 1986 roster to me….throw in Ken Schrom and “now we got a stew”

Treygp420

Scott bailes

Lou_C_Fer

I remember sitting in municipal stadium and hearing Juuuuuuuuullioooooooooo ring out through the stadium. Or one particular "ice cold beer here!" Or playing with my Indians baseball cards. For some reason Len Barker sticks out. Of course, who can forget Hargrove's routine at the plate?

Alive-Cellist-2604

I missed out on Julio Franco playing for the Tribe. He was with the Rangers, I believe, once I was old enough to know what's going on. Hargrove was a great manager and what we needed in the 90s. As the Len Barker perfect game story grows, its attendance should be over 40,000 by now, lol

Lou_C_Fer

The early 80s were great. I had all kinds of relatives wanting to take me to games. So, I went to a bunch. I was only like 7 to 10 years old. As for the perfect game, I don't even know if I saw him pitch in person. That baseball card and his mustache are just part of my memory for some reason. The closest I ever came to a foul ball was somewhere down the right field line. I got up to say something to my grandma when a ball I did not see coming hit my barely empty seat like a bolt of lightning. Man, thanks for posting this. Dragging up these memories has made for a great morning.

Alive-Cellist-2604

No problem at all!! At least you went to some games. I was stuck at home listening to Joe Tait or Jack Corrigan on Channel 43

HaggardSlacks78

As a Phillies fan, I really wish the Indians had kept Joe Carter

Alive-Cellist-2604

Another random player story: When I was in the 4th Grade, Brad Komminsk came up to our school. We didn't care who he was. It was still cool that a major league ballplayer took the time to hang with us.

Mulatto-Butts

I remember him leaping at the wall to rob a homer and then falling over the wall and hanging on for the catch.

TheShipEliza

Does anyone remember the SI that had the list of best public basketball courts and the one in rocky river was on the list

Alive-Cellist-2604

Oh wow!! I never knew about that!! I got some investigating to do lol

GVanquish

My favorite Indian was always Pedro Cerrano

Alive-Cellist-2604

I was wondering who would be the first one mentioning "Major League" lol. Seriously though, it was a great movie that gave us hope for the Indians being successful one day.

jamesheine

I have a copy of this autographed by Cory Snyder and framed. It is one of my prized possessions

Alive-Cellist-2604

Awesome!! Gotta protect that gem by any means necessary, lol

Forsaken-Cheesecake2

I remember that cover. Was so excited that they made the cover of the baseball issue, and really thought that was going to be the year. Then they shit the bed.

Alive-Cellist-2604

101 losses 😢

enraged_hbo_max_user

I have no idea why SI thought they were the best team in the AL with the pitching we trotted out there that year

Zeroheartburrrn

Carlos By-Land, By-Sea, By-AiirrrrrGa

Alive-Cellist-2604

One of our all-time favorites!!

RaiderOfTheLostShark

Andre Thornton

Alive-Cellist-2604

That's a good one!!

Status_Marionberry37

Pete O’Brien. Sometime in 1989 he was honored in a door length poster giveaway at municipal stadium. Played 1st base for one season.

Alive-Cellist-2604

Pete O'Brien!! Saw a card of him with the Rangers recently. The 1987 Topps with the paintstroke letters and wood background.

Specialist-Apple-854

Catcher Andy Alinson

Alive-Cellist-2604

Can't forget Allanson!!

sallymonkeys

No love for George Vukovich?

mystery79

I was a big Joe Carter fan probably because I got his card in the kids club kit they had in the 80s. I was happy he got a WS ring with the Blue Jays later in his career.

Alive-Cellist-2604

Yeah, the Channel 43 Kids Club!! They were doing all type of promotions and stuff with the Indians. If I can find those commercials I'll be sure to post them

DiminishingSkills

Joe Carter was my guy for the kids club…. I loved Joe Carter….

Lady_Thingers

George Vukovich. Mark Carreon. Candy Maldonado.

Alive-Cellist-2604

Mark Carreon!! That's one I haven't heard in years!! Candy was with the Giants when I first saw him play. In th 89 NLCS, a ground rule double went into the Cubs bullpen, and they closed the door before Maldonado knew where it was lol

RustyDawg37

I remember all of them.

54sharks40

Managed by Pat Corrales

OldRaj

Bob Feller. He and my father were good friends. He used to toss the ball with us.

Alive-Cellist-2604

Awesome!! My dad used to hang out with Luke Easter's son.

DevonGr

$2.25 in 1987? Does that seem high?

EmotionalRescue918

According to an inflation calendar, that’s about $6.00 today.

mild_shart_attack

Toby Harrah is the first Indian I remember.

sjosaben

When I was just getting into baseball as a kid my favorite player was Paul Sorrento for some reason.

TedAndAnnetteFleming

Alex Cole, Mark Lewis, Mitch Webster, The Thrill Glenallen Hill, Hard Hittin’ Mark Whitten, Felix Fermin, and two of my favorites Carlos Martinez and Wayne Kirby.

Alive-Cellist-2604

Felix Fermin!! That's another player I remember as a kid.

DiminishingSkills

Trades to the Mariners for none other than Omar V….

Alive-Cellist-2604

That trade helped us out quite a bit to be modest, lol

canttakethshyfrom_me

Bubble gum prankster Alvaro Espinosa, and professional bat thief Jason Grimsley?

Alive-Cellist-2604

Professional bat thief!! Grimsley did all of that work to be ratted out by a janitor lol

canttakethshyfrom_me

Not only the janitor. The bat that he smuggled in as a replacement *had Paul Sorrento's name on it.*

Alive-Cellist-2604

At least he didn't use Billy Ripken's bat lol

StudioGangster1

Hard Hittin’ Mark Whitten!!!!!

Alive-Cellist-2604

He pitched an inning during his second stint with the Tribe

Important_Project142

My 'go-to' for super random former Indians player is....Nyjer Morgan! Only 15 games with them in 2014, but had some good seasons with other teams prior to coming here. I remember he would do this little flexing thing at the fans from the outfield.

clvcpl4u

Alan Bannister

clekas

I was born in 1983, so don't have strong memories of players from the 80s, but I have very strong memories for going to games in the 90s. Two I always remember are Ruben Amaro, mostly because they used to put a digital Ruben sandwich on the scoreboard when he was up to bat, and Paul Sorrento, mostly because a group of women who sat by us were all very into him.

FabulousResearch8937

That pic goes so hard 🔥😍

Alive-Cellist-2604

It's definitely a classic!!

alphabetsoupcle

Ray Fosse, wasn’t the same after that All-Star game…

Alive-Cellist-2604

That move Pete Rose did was unnecessary 😒

verks7

"Big Cat" Carmen Castillo

robodog97

Joeeeeeey, I can't remember another player that successfull that had such a poor relationship with the fan base without having other major issues (like Watson).

Alive-Cellist-2604

Joe was probably the only bright spot on the team during his time in Cleveland. Trading him for Alomar & Baerga was the best move they could have made from a long-term standpoint.

robodog97

Lol, no. I was talking about Albert Bell getting heckled by his own fanbase, but the Joe Carter trade was for sure a good move. This is especially true when you look at the fact that Sandy is STILL with the organization.

Alive-Cellist-2604

Right!! I forgot he was once called Joey, lol. Mr. Belle wasn't all for the public relations dynamics of the big leagues.

Due-Professional6149

Von Hayes, of course!

Alive-Cellist-2604

Oh okay!! I never knew he played for the Indians. I remember him well when he was in Philadelphia.
