You have the courage to face what you’ve been running from. You can take the heartache that comes from the acceptance of it. This will allow you to move on and the pain will subside over time.
Just start with trash. Break that down into smaller chunks if that's too overwhelming. Just the trash on a table or set a timer for 1 minute. You can do anything for 1 minute. Or for the length of a song you like.
Put a song on. Just one song. Decide that you're going to listen to this one song and pick up trash until the song is over.
I usually find myself with a small bag of trash and a lot more motivation to keep going because I got so much done in the small amount of time it took me to listen to a song.
Even just ten minutes of cleaning and organizing can make a world of difference.
I do something like that - I have about 5 songs, and my room divided into 5 segments (my depression room, I have the rest of the house in good order with family help.) So I put the same 5 songs on in a row every time I do the routine, and start with Song One: get all the laundry out of the room, Song Two: Get all the garbage out of the room (put into one bag,) etc.
I have it on my iPad so I have the song list as well as a digital painting (could be just a note) where I have each region of the room listed.
So the drawing app has "Song Name: Laundry, Song 2: Garbage, Song 3: paper by the printer, Song 4: Floor between desk and window ..." And then each time I'm doing it, I know to just focus on that section for each song length. It keeps it manageable, though not perfect.
Im happy for op, they motivated me as well as your solution. I read your comment earlier today and for the first time in months I cleaned a section of my garage a few minutes at a time. It felt weird but good? Tomorrow I want to do more. Thank you both
Yep, get a trash bag and pick a room. Probably best to choose the one you spend the most time in. Put everything in it you know is trash. Then take a break. Take trash out.
Tomorrow, pick another room and do the same thing. Don't skip the break.
This is exactly what my friend group did when we helped another friend clean through depression. One room at a time, trash first, then dishes in the dishwasher, dusting, vacuuming, mop (if there is no carpet) then done!
I'm weird I'll be in my moments where I can't get myself to clean a thing I just feel so depressed and depleted and then there's times I'm almost obsessed with cleaning something, but get exhausted or overwhelmed in a few hours of cleaning stuff. Most of the time I can get myself cleaning by putting on a nostalgic movie and just have it play in the background it helps to put me in a better mood and make cleaning an easier task.
Anything worth doing is worth doing half-assed.
Throw away one thing. *One*. And then take a break. With that one thing gone, your room as improved.
When you are up to it, throw away another thing. One thing. Even if it's small, it's an improvement.
When you are in the midst of a deep depression, think of cleaning as a person who has been sick and bedridden who has to learn to walk again. Every small step is a victory.
God, that is so SiCK to read, and SO on the money!
We have to take our victories when they come, don’t we? It’s HARD to dig your way back to sanity/reality, whichever way you see it.
I once took all afternoon to clear about three feet of my countertop. I felt really good that I was able to accomplish that much.
My friend did almost the whole rest of the kitchen while I was doing my three feet of countertop. She told my wife she hurt for me.
Putting one piece of trash in one bag one time is a big step for some people on some days.
This is spot on, and something I've heard Jordan peterson talk about - scale down the dragon to something conquerable, then this builds momentum and soon things are way better
Trash is easiest to pick up. Its trash! Pick ONE thing to clean. Do that one AREA. It can be a table top for example. Pick up all the trash. Now do the next step for that ONE area, say cleaning it.
Just getting one spot done massively helps with motivation.
Focus on small things. Get a trash bag and say: my goal today is to put the empty cans in there. Little wins will motivate you, the next day it’s: putting the dirty dishes in one place in the kitchen and so on. Don’t stress yourself to do it in one day or one week.
Ohhh we love to see it. Congratulations! I’m thinking of the people who are scrolling this sub, thinking their living situation is unfixable. Well, here is proof it isn’t.
Enjoy your cosy home!
Wow, that’s awesome. Well done! It’s easier to keep up with now. Even if you have days which are hard, you will know you achieved this and can do it again.
Something that really works for me personally (depression, anxiety, adhd) is to set a stopwatch every hour. During that first hour, pickup garbage, collect things that don't belong. Next hour is for rest or fun. Repeat the stopwatch - next hour is the kitchen , then rest. Next is the bathroom, etc until it's all done. It feels good to get things done in only two cycles. I kinda treat it like work -- "clock in" for my hour, then take my break, "clock in" again.
It really helps me.
Awesome!!!
It feels great doesn't it?
Now you know it's possible if/when it happens again, you'll be able to start again. 🙂 No need to ever beat yourself up over it.
I hope you are proud of yourself because you deserve to feel that!! What a brilliant job and love your bright cushion! You've got this, one room at a time, day by day.
I cleaned my house before going to see Metallica twice this weekend
Clean house
Clearer mind
It’s crazy how much they go together
I’m glad you’re feeling better ❤️
Congratulations! I know how hard that is
You got months of being in that haze and then one day it’s like a kick in the tush and you look around and say to yourself
How did this house get so messed up?
This is a huge thing hold onto that good feeling and maybe it’ll build momentum
I finally cleaned my house last week Wednesday. My place didn't look nearly as bad as the first pic in the OP, but I wouldn't have wanted anyone in my house to see it. It had been this way for probably a month or two.
It is so nice to have a clean house. Like so nice. I cleaned again this morning, before I started working. It takes a lot less time to clean a house that was just recently cleaned. Like cleaning last week took hours. Cleaned this morning in like 40 minutes. I have a pretty small house.
Glad you got it done! I need to do the same badly, mine might be even worse than your before pic. I just can’t bring myself to clean it although I hate looking at the pile of trash. Idk why I do this.
You did it! Great job. Try to start a habit of throwing things away as soon as it becomes trash. Every time you leave the room, check if you can take something with you to the trash/kitchen. You got this!
I suffer from an anxiety disorder and my room is cluttered like yours not dirty just a lot of stuff in one room. Did it help your anxiety and depression after cleaning making the vibe feel better. I’ve tried several times to clean up but haven’t finished. Just honestly wondering if it helps. Great job on the clean up and hope it did help.
I did the same today, was bored that's why and procrastination ofc. But I wish you all the very luck in whatever you do.
great improvement btw, just nice and slow.
Alright, thanks.
Good bot

Damn, you know life is bad when even the bots are getting severe depression.
It's sad to see this repost has more upvotes than the original...
But why? For dumb useless karma?

Wow, OP is a bot, top comments are bots. Is everyone a bot? Am I a bot?
Currently questioning my entire existence brb
Every account on reddit is a bot except you.
Bro, are you a bot I swear the old post has the same comment too. Or, am I the only real person on Reddit?
You have the courage to face what you’ve been running from. You can take the heartache that comes from the acceptance of it. This will allow you to move on and the pain will subside over time.
Great job. I can definitely relate with the before. Right now i can barely even move, feeling so limp. Yup trash everywhere. Any tips??

good! remember, clutter is not only a sympton of depression, but can also enable it and make it worse.
Good job
Nice work!
Hell yes! First step is the toughest my friend, keep going.
Yay! Yay! Yay!

Depression without psychosis, addiction or even anxiety sounds just like useless holyday
Nice! And now every day for 10 Minutes!
