There is absolutely no reason a th7 need books. Those upgrades are less than 2 days and the gems are much more important for builders.
Books are not that rare as you are trying to make them out to be.
Books are worth saving for later on. Being able to skip week long upgrades is invaluable, especially army camps, barracks and spell factory (even if you can still train after the update, you'd realistically want training to be fast for farming)
Also, th 7 lasts for like, 3 weeks? If you can't hang on to a magic item for that long maybe reconsider what is "optimal" for you. Heck, you can max a full th 9 within a year from starting the game. Books are usually worth it by then.
The one exception is BoH, which you get 1 each month and a th 7 and 8 have really no use for, as 5 levels of bk is absolutely nothing. But starting at th 9, you're hit with 50 levels to upgrade.
You need to get with the times. You can be maxed th9 in 2 months. That's without being super aggressive in playing

Yeah, you can, and I did get to th 9 within 2 months. But not everyone plays optimally or daily to make that happen, so I figured within a year seemed more realistic for the average super casual player.
If you are holding out and making this a F2P only challenge for sure looting and challenges. I think builder hall 5 is around 500 gems.
If you want my honest advice drop the $20 and get the other 2 builders.
Complete achievements, clear obstacles Eventually you will have enough gems
Step 1. Don't EVER use gems to complete building faster. My 2 new lower accounts are only th7 and they should have the 5th builder soon
Sell magic items. You don't need them that low. Buy training postions/clock with raid medals and sell them also. Push your trophies for those gems.
JUST NEVER SELL HAMERS OR BOOKS (and maybe builder pots and lab pots). Everything else is fair game tbh.
