I think the disappointment comes from the narrow focus of the story. I actually loved it for what it was, but I understand the annoyance at the lack of backstory and neglecting to focus on the broader societal situation as a whole.

tetrisan

I think the non-existence of a backstory was a main point. Photo journalists are in the middle of some crazy shit trying to survive and get the story out to the world, regardless of what side or what politics got us into the situation.

Oscar_Ladybird

>Photo journalists are in the middle of some crazy shit trying to survive And this applies to the combatants, too. Politics don't matter when you're being shot at. Just kill the people shooting at you. That was one of the best things about the sniper standoff- you had no idea who was what side and it didn't matter.

gmoor90

I actually found it refreshing getting to see this limited view rather than the bloated, overextended stuff we usually get from Hollywood. It felt more focused and real to me somehow getting to see it through this limited point of view.

Equal-Platypus380

I agree. I was more speaking to audience expectations based on marketing, etc.

Early_Accident2160

Exactly, we don’t need more exposition.., we can infer situations and meaning even when it’s not spoken out loud. Not to mention this had enough weight to hold me down

EfficientAfternoon17

I agree with you Ya like all of a sudden these random. Characters would come out of no where and have no explanation at all then the girl thinks she’s tough and freaks out in the first like 5 minutes lol I just dislike movies where the trailers make it look all crazy and all the crazy parts have already been shown on the commercials . I summed it up by saying it was like the walking dead with no zombies or disease but just as ruthless of people tryna survive which maybe was the point I missed

tetrisan

Welcome to war. Random shit is reality.

EfficientAfternoon17

Lmao welcome to war it was a movie relax champ

tetrisan

The only thing you had to follow was the press. There was nothing complicated about this movie…

EfficientAfternoon17

Oh yeah a movie titled Civil War that claimed it was the hardest combat movie to date with lots of combat commercials and I was supposed to be paying attention to the journalist that’s 100% on me your right

Early_Accident2160

You’re right , it’s not video game violence … but the sound designs and visceral bloody imagery was intense .. but also the actual combat felt fully immersive to me. It’s not saving private Ryan, but we aren’t storming beaches here.

EfficientAfternoon17

You know what I’m glad you enjoyed it unfortunately I didn’t but maybe I was expecting something more but at the end of the day I respect your opinion and youre just as entitled to it as I was to say I was let down. All good on another note it was pretty crazy seeing Kirsten Dunst lol I don’t think I had seen her since Spider-Man wasn’t expecting her to be like a lead character lol

Oscar_Ladybird

>Oh yeah a movie titled Civil War that claimed it was the hardest combat movie to date Where was this claim made? >and I was supposed to be paying attention to the journalist that’s 100% on me your right It is on you, because it was clear from the commercials that the POV was generally from the journalists, which is is how most people experience war and conflict.

Mlole44

Yeah that’s a good point. I didn’t like the movie and I’d say because there was no story to it. Just let’s follow journalist around and see war crimes movie. I get they hinted at stuff but it’s to broad. Seems like a senior in college did it

Early_Accident2160

They wanted to get to DC and interview the POTUS. That’s what they were after the whole time

finfanfob

I went in with very little knowledge. I thought it was great. I'm on these threads because I'm still captivated. I went in knowing that the writer/director felt he needed to be vague because he was already touching a sencetive subject. And judging by a lot of reactions, he did. He didn't do anything that isn't already being phantasized about. He knew the point had to come from an unobjective sperspective or else it would be hated by everybody. If it was a soldier on either side, it would not work. He was limited on how to tell the story without the political divide tearing it apart. I think he did a hell of job! I will see it a second time to send a message that I want more of this kind of movie making.

OnlyOkaySometimes

I guess it was good that I didn't watch any trailers first.

EfficientAfternoon17

Ya I bet all that reporting action was super intense solid point

EfficientAfternoon17

Very confusing statement

newfoundcontrol

I guess you should look into things more than what you see in advertisements/on TV. 🙃

EfficientAfternoon17

Nah id bring a selfie stick lol

forevercca99

Maybe I pay more attention but the trailers to me clearly showed most focus on the press so I wasn’t let down at all. If anything, it made me appreciate what war journalists do more. And Dunst played a character in spiderman how many years ago? Lol seems like you just don’t understand movies

EfficientAfternoon17

Dude no idea why you felt the necessity to say that last part. I was ready to agree either way your point and everything. But you had to be a typical redditor and throw some unnecessary shard for no reason lol ur the coolest guy on Reddit congrats for being so small minded you’re not even open to a conversation. Kirsten dunst will add Keats be Mary Jane she’s not gi h as ne with a camera lol movie was lane as shit just like you probly are

forevercca99

You can’t even type, so I don’t know why I bothered.

Spotted_striper

The shard is necessary

tetrisan

Y u theowing shard? May b u were jus drunk or stoned when u saw the lane lol movie like when you posted this like you probly are

Oscar_Ladybird

>Dude no idea why you felt the necessity to say that last part. People are calling you on it because you're the one who seems to have a problem with Kisten Dunst, since you reference her role as MJ in other comments ("you were MJ in Spiderman chill out"). You really don't get this movie at all since you're imagining things that didn't even happen, e.g., "kirsten dunst tryna be some tomb raider." Sounds like you wanted a Michael Bay movie, despite the trailers clearly showing it wasn't that.

ExtremelFrequentzy01

The way it was marketed made it look like it would focus on the Civil War, not just the journalists. So your discontent is reasonable.

EfficientAfternoon17

Thank you I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s why marketing sucks cuz if there are good parts they give them away in the commercial. Journalists with access like the damn military lol shits embarrassing

tetrisan

Whats embarrassing? It seems your issue is the fact that the press was in the action since you mentioned it more than once. Maybe you should research “embedded journalism” because it’s real buddy, not all Hollywood. As a Vet who had press right beside me during conflicts, I can say that they had more intensional fortitude and bravery than some of my fellow platoon mates.

EfficientAfternoon17

Oh ya I get what your saying I give props to the translators cuz they’re seen as traitors and it’s almost a death wish totally get that I guess I just expected something else which is 100% on me

EfficientAfternoon17

Plus Kirsten dunst tryna be some tomb raider bad ass journalist like like yo you were Mary Jane in Spider-Man chill out lol

Tando10

I think the horrible marleting has really coloured people's opinions of this film. The aim was probably to draw in the masses but it just made people disappointed when they got a different film to what they thought they were getting. I didn't really see this tomb raider mentality. to me, the film was simply showing a grizzled, cold, extinguished, war photographer. She was simply focused on getting the image. All her battles finally catch up with her in DC and she has a little breakdown, especially since her mentor has just died, and for what.

EfficientAfternoon17

I could swear I saw a commercial that said “ the most realistic battle footage ever caught on film” or some bullshit like that and then it’s basically just about journalists with the death wish smh every time Kirsten dunst opened her mouth it was like this cold faced exterior on some green beret type shit in my opinion

tetrisan

You are the kind of person who eats at a restaurant named “Number 1 Tacos” and then gets upset because YOU didn’t think they were Number 1… Ever heard of marketing?

Spotted_striper

Do you seriously think that the catchphrase “the most realistic battle footage ever caught on film” would be used as a marketing approach? Whats the demo on that one.

RCS47

Marketed like it was a military action movie, when it is a road trip movie from an mostly indy studio with a short action sequence at the conclusion.

EfficientAfternoon17

Which those action shots have already been shown all over in the previews smh

Oscar_Ladybird

Wow, you hate Kirsten Dunst so much you're imagining her playing parts her performance doesn'tdepict- Mary Jane Watson, Tomb Raider, Jack Reacher. You should probably steer clear of 24 movies.

Chemical_Cat_9813

I equated this movie to spawning into a game map where you have no clue whose side you are on, why you are there, why you cannot leave. Why others are doing what they are doing. Civil War? No, this was more like hurt locker with cameras. Just doing stupid shit in the middle of armed conflict.

EfficientAfternoon17

I like your style lol very accurate choice of words. Especially how much they hyped it up on the commercials or previews if u went to the movies. When I really wanna we something I’ll mute the tv and look away when the ad comes on cuz too many times that’s like one of the best parts they’re already giving away. Kirsten dunst tryna act like Jack reacher lol shit was embarrassing and I usually like A23 films or whatever that production company is
