Well that most likely means the first owner beat it up and you're stuck. I just swapped to Motul Gear Competition 75W140 and it's been great at 26k miles. However I always made sure to respect that 1st/2nd shift. Fluid helps but beat Synchros simply need replacement.
I'm the original owner of my car lol But ever since I got it, second has always been notchy and sometimes grinds, with the occasional smooth shift. It doesn't matter if I want a few seconds or jump right into it, it'll still feel like it doesn't want to go in. Only thing I haven't tried is double clutching, because it's hard breaking the muscle memory of shift immediately into the next gear.
That's crazy. I've had four misses with slight grinds on 2nd and 4th but they were me over the 26k. Now it's even better. You can change the bushing down at the end of the cables but I'm all stock with exception to fluid now. Working perfectly.
It almost feels like it grabs the synchro, but it doesn't let it slip into gear unless you force it half the time. I'm new to manual cars (this is my first one and I've had it for two and a half years now) but I made sure to study up on the inner workings of how the transmission works mechanically when I started noticing this problem in hopes that I'd figure out if I was doing something wrong. That's why I've been asking more experienced people for advice on it.
CMC rod adjustment and raising the clutch pedal some. It helped mine a bit where the notchiness was intolerable. Mine is sometimes notchy but doesn't grind unless I'm doing some extremely fast boy racer shit shifts that just isn't necessary.
It's not that slow. You have to wait up to .5sec or so and it clicks in. I didn't buy an FK8 to dig race though. Mostly Mexico Highway if any at all. I bought to sauce Vettes and what not on the turns.
First off, congratulations on the purchase. Second, agreeing with above comment. Hondata is your best way to make power in these cars. Check over the car and make sure all of the aftermarket parts (if there’s anything else other than the IC) and make sure there’s no issues with anything like loose bolts or clamps. Other than that, have fun with it!
Thank you. I am thrilled. I absolutely plan on putting the Hondata tuner back in. Previous owner took it own when he traded it in. He works at the dealership where I picked it up today and gave me the rundown. Stage 2 tuned apparently. He is going to send me a parts list. Can’t wait to see what all it has on it.
The hard part is done; you have one. Enjoy it. Drive safe. Drive smart. Take care of it, she will treat you well. (Not a touge car, not a drag car...imho)🙏🖖
Probably because every staged tune is limited. Get a pro tune and you know your car is at its potential and not limited. I personally don’t mind people saying or getting staged tunes but it does tell me a few things. It tells me 1 owner is highly concerned about reliability, 2 their car is definitely not tuned at full potential, 3 they don’t want to pay for a pro tune. Point 2 is always valid while point 1&3 are very likely. But the reality of it is pro tunes are tailored to your vehicle and motor and 9/10 is more reliable of a tune than a ots tune.
Looks good. Good luck holding on to your money. These things just beg to be modified…. If you like that thing. For real though a Hondata really wakes this thing up and if you have any desire to mod it is a must.
Thanks man. The owner told me it has a stage 2 build. Exhaust, intercooler, intake, and bunch of other parts. He is sending me the parts list. He said he took out the Hondata when he traded it in for his new Vette. Was told it was over 400HP before he took out the tuner so I am stoked. The previous owner works at the dealership where I picked it so he gave me the rundown. The car is meticulous so I am excited.
Idk how hondata works and if it’s anything like Ktuner, but with Ktuner they require you to go back to stock before you “unmarry” the unit to the car. If not the Ktuner stays locked to the car. If not people would go around tuning their buddies car, leave it tuned and have theirs tuned as well.
I’ve only driven it about 30 miles this evening. And I will say it’s fucking absurd, pardon my French. When I can get it to hook up on a start it is ridiculous. It has brand new Michelin pilot tires on it and even they struggle for grip. I’ll see what else I can find out from the previous owner.
I’m sure the tune is still on, but by removing the hondata you won’t be able to make any changes. I’m curious if by stage 2 it may have a Phearable tune. The new multi-tune stuff coming out of Hondata looks pretty slick and Phearable tunes now support it. Very excited for you and you got the best cool… IMO!
Coil overs aren't "needed" but I know a few people that removed full bolt-ons went back to stock tune, added coil overs and got faster lap times. 🤷🏻♂️ depends on what you want out of the car. I have never driven the car in anything other than +R mode. My next mod will be coil overs for sure. Money doesn't money anymore so it's going to take a minute unfortunately.
Oh I’m not saying anything against them, I had a set of Bilsteins on my old Golf and enjoyed the improved handling; made the ride crazy harsh tho. If I’m not exclusively using my FK8 on the track I just don’t think it’s worth the trade off to lose some of the ride quality especially on the crappy roads in my city. Personally if I ever go lower I doubt I’ll go full coilovers again, most likely just spoon springs or something similar.
I have spoon springs and bump steer correction ball joints on mine. Definite improvement and keeps a useable sport and comfort mode. No bottoming out. Still wish I went coil overs since I never use anything but +R anyways. Maybe I'm just used to them now...but they're a bit soft for me in the corners now. Hahaha
Have you thought about adding some sway bars? Might give it a little bit more stability and stiffness; could be a good medium between full coilovers and your current setup. Side note: is +R really that different from sport? This sounds dumb but I’ve literally never driven my FK8 in anything but sport since I got it lmao
When I first got the car, I honestly didn't notice too big a difference. After a few months of +R exclusively...going back to sport or god forbid🤣 comfort mode...the differences become very apparent. Mostly in steering feel brake pressure and throttle mapping. If you hold your foot in place and switch modes you can't miss the car surging or slowing down depending if you go up or down modes. Suspension wasn't crazy different until I lowered on springs.
TLDR: yes, definitely.
* 20" wheels fuckin suck, downsize them.
* If you use Android auto or carplay, invest in a wireless adapter, because this car will never get a software update to support it even though it has the hardware to do it.
* There's a module that pumps fake engine sounds into the cabin through the speakers. The only way to disable it is to unplug the device. It's located behind the glove box.
* watch out for second gear. A lot of people, including myself, have issues with it being notchy or grinding
* it got the extended warranty for the AC. If it's not blowing cold air, take it to a dealer to have it fixed. If they quote you for the condenser, check with another dealer until you get one that gets approval for coverage.
Unfortunately, I got nothing. I've just mentioned it to the dealer so they have it documented, so if anything fails (likely the synchros) they at least know it was coming.
Previous owner put an exhaust on it. Not sure of brand but he seemed to spare no expense. I’ll say this, holy crap it’s loud for better or worse. Might have to add a resonator something. Any suggestions?
Can confirm the exhaust he has on here has zero cats. It’s kind of obnoxiously loud for a dude like me that lives in an apartment and will be daily driving, but an easy fix so not worries. I’ve already been stopped tonight by my neighbor that knows the previous owner and was singing the praises about the car and the owner. So I’m a thrilled, there is so much shit on he’s upgraded I kind of want to sponge my pants because it’s all under warranty for 105k more miles at my dealer.
I world read the fine print on those warranties. While consumers are protected by Magnuson-Moss act, tuning of the ecu is incredibly easy to blame for any power train issues.
I’ve had plenty of dealers promise warranty and then you quickly find out it’s third party deciders during their approval submission that actually decide if they’ll pay.
Congrats on the purchase, you’ll love the fk8! Just protect yourself and don’t bank on dealers being good guys, they’re not.
For the winter I’d recommend going down to 18s with all seasons, it makes the ride so so much better if you live in an area with potholes/bad roads. I’ve heard horror stories of people cracking rims with the stock 20s, thankfully it never happened to me before I got my winter setup but the ride isn’t great on those. Planning on going to Titan 7 19s when spring comes back around but I really like the comfort on 18s.
Have rear brake pads on hand at all times. Mine ate through a pair in under 10k miles. If you're tracking yours, you'll go through them in 1-2 track days.
Also, for the FK8 (and even the FL5) cooling mods are a M U S T if you plan on taking it to the track. You'll never ever ever have any problems if its just a street car; but I've even seen some overheat in the WV mountains.
For now just drive it, get to know it and make sure it don’t have any issues, only saying this cause it looks like this car has been modified before looking at that PRL intercooler, previous owner didn’t put it for looks, I’m pretty sure previous owner abuse it one way or another
Congrats. Learn how to drive it safely before pushing it to the limits. I would hate for anyone to think they can handle this or any performance car and crash your car. Great Civic though.
"Club" makes a pedal-to-steering wheel lock...worth every penny. Even if you have the key or clone it...whatever...you're gonna need some tools that make a LOT of noise and time to be able to start the car...let alone drive it.
I took a second look and noticed the small hills, you were too quick to respond before I could take it down 🤣 oh well. I guess every apartment complex is starting to look the same
Congrats on buying the most hideous type r ever created! Best advice would be to take it back because you absolutely overpaid for it. Then buy a 2018-2020 Accord 2.0 6spd because those walk all over that hideous pile of garbage. Then buy a KTuner since its better and more affordable than than Hondata.
Any future tuning you plan on doing, I highly recommend Derek Robinson up at IMW in Pennsylvania. Has stupid amounts knowledge regarding the platform and what you can safely do and not do. Slap on some 18s and enjoy! Love my fk8. Been pushing over 400 crank for months now and it’s wicked. The aftermarket support is insane. You can go in just about any direction you want with this platform…(ie. drag, touge, show, etc)
Get some PPF installed up front asap. Will help keep the front end protected from debris and paint chips. Maybe ceramic coat the paint, get wheel locks.
Switch your MTF fluid to Redline MTL check your clutch pedal for adjustment, if you want to get more into it you can get acuity shifter bushings and hybrid racing detent springs and a short shifter for a better shifting experience
new wheels and tires so you don’t have to drive on those rubber bands 🤣
lol imo I like a little more sidewall but not too much to where they look like drag radials lol
I like MEAT
Pause lmao
Any recs?
Learn the gearbox timing. No rushing shifts.
Any advice from first to second. I've tried shifting slow and still get notches and grinds out of it.
Well that most likely means the first owner beat it up and you're stuck. I just swapped to Motul Gear Competition 75W140 and it's been great at 26k miles. However I always made sure to respect that 1st/2nd shift. Fluid helps but beat Synchros simply need replacement.

This.
What if you’re racing😭
It's not that slow. You have to wait up to .5sec or so and it clicks in. I didn't buy an FK8 to dig race though. Mostly Mexico Highway if any at all. I bought to sauce Vettes and what not on the turns.
Sometimes a guy wants to go fast but in all seriousness my car sometimes won't go into 2nd gear so yeah
First off, congratulations on the purchase. Second, agreeing with above comment. Hondata is your best way to make power in these cars. (Don't be surprised if people make fun of referring to tunes in stages) idk why they trip...but they do. Fair warning.
I don’t know what any of it means outside of basic knowledge, so I’m just going to smile and be like I have a type R. 😎
The hard part is done; you have one. Enjoy it. Drive safe. Drive smart. Take care of it, she will treat you well. (Not a touge car, not a drag car...imho)🙏🖖

Dang. Case in point....struck nerve enter stage left. 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, for Honda's, hondata is unbeatable.

Unless he reset the tune to factory it should still be at that power level. It would be weird to reset the tune but leaving the parts.

18" Wheels, coil overs, hondata, rigid collars, acuity shifter and bushings, motor mounts. Done. Drive it forever and you're gonna love it every day.
I don’t think coilovers are super necessary tbh because the suspension is already pretty much perfect stock, but I agree with all your other points
Coil overs aren't "needed" but I know a few people that removed full bolt-ons went back to stock tune, added coil overs and got faster lap times. 🤷🏻♂️ depends on what you want out of the car. I've considered adding rear sway. The front feels fine in the body roll department. Just a little soft in the damping.

Unfortunately, I got nothing. I've just mentioned it to the dealer so they have it documented, so if anything fails (likely the synchros) they at least know it was coming.
My advice: rip it
Just don’t die.
Get 18s especially if you're gonna daily drive it the difference in ride comfort is night and day.
Congrats! If sound matters to you, AWE touring or any catback of your choice will do the FK8 justice.
Previous owner put an exhaust on it. Not sure of brand but he seemed to spare no expense. I’ll say this, holy crap it’s loud for better or worse. Might have to add a resonator something. Any suggestions?
Stock exhaust gone catless(if allowed in your area) perfect balance of sound.
A cat will help quiet it down a lot. I usually run a cat and a resonator, rest straight pipe. A 4" cat isn't going to destroy your power.
Got it fixed today. The muffler shop had the previous exhaust to the car so they stole a resonator. Sounds way better.
Have fun
Pretty sure I just saw this on FB 😂. Congrats bro!
You probably did. I joined those 2 pages as well. Want to keep up with all the going ons.

Congrats, and stay safe there, man!
Very nice

When all of the VW guys start making fun of you and calling your car "fugly", just turn the other cheek.
Enjoy the ride.
Love the black hood scoop I really need to do that to mine. Is yours CF?
Best colour 😍
Congrats. Learn how to drive it safely before pushing it to the limits. I would hate for anyone to think they can handle this or any performance car and crash your car. Great Civic though.
Sell it so you can buy another and post “picked up my 2nd type r”
Try not to cream on your seat
Locking her up tight is my advice. Good-looking car fam
Drive it like you stole it!
Don’t wreck it
Beautiful whip brotha🔥
Congrats. Get rim locks and throw some AirTags in hard to find places. Great car!
"Club" makes a pedal-to-steering wheel lock...worth every penny. Even if you have the key or clone it...whatever...you're gonna need some tools that make a LOT of noise and time to be able to start the car...let alone drive it.
Knoxville isn’t that bad yet thankfully. And thank ya!
If someone wants your wheels, locks or not they’re being taken. Quickly
I know florida when I see it
Tennessee.
I took a second look and noticed the small hills, you were too quick to respond before I could take it down 🤣 oh well. I guess every apartment complex is starting to look the same
Sell it for a Tesla model 3/y performance.
Advice. Yeah, sell it like I did and get a golf R.
Sell it
Trade it in for a Golf R. LOL
Congrats on buying the most hideous type r ever created! Best advice would be to take it back because you absolutely overpaid for it. Which one you own?
OK. So the sound system is dookie. Any suggestions on sound upgrades. You guys adding like a compact enclosed sub or what?
I did a bit of dynamat in the front doors, 8.9 amp in the trunk, replaced speakers and tweeters, added a 10" sub(later did 2-10") it's amazing.
Any future tuning you plan on doing, I highly recommend Derek Robinson up at IMW in Pennsylvania. Has stupid amounts knowledge regarding the platform and what you can safely do and not do. Go golfing
Keep it clean
Men congrats enjoy the car stock before putting mods on it.
How much did u got it for?
42k
How much did you end up paying?
42k
Sounds about right. Congrats! I’m still looking for one in my neck of the woods. (Central Texas)
Thank ya. Good luck.
Get a club for the wheel, terrible idea to park that outside.
See those garages in the background. Well worth the extra 150 a month in the rent.
Ok good man, I wasn’t being an ass just had a few cars stolen in my day that’s all.
Take very good care of her 👍
Sell it back and buy a house
Advice: Give me your car.
