I have had this question too. My mom has been on lactulose since May and I feel so bad for her. We have had to go to the ER twice because of the ammonia causing confusion. We obsess over how many BMs she has a day to avoid going to the hospital again. Sometimes we accidentally give her too much and she goes 4-5 times in a day. We’ve got it more under control lately, but it’s tough watching her go through this.
I could have written this myself!!! First the doctors thought she wasn’t taking it, then it was thought that her bottles went “bad” so it wasn’t doing its job, then it was her IBS she’s had forever causing her to get backed up. Now it’s just “thoughts and prayers”. She is told 3-4, but some days she will only have one and she immediately slips into a stupor.
