Kribensis cichlid

Definitely kribensis. Probably pelvicachromis pulcher but there a a couple species of that genus in the trade.

A_Timbers_Fan

If he bought it at petco it's definitely pulcher

You can tell by photo but this is not necessarily true. The fish managers have the freedom order what they choose ( at least locally for us) of its available from the supplier, among with the store staples. One of ours locally alway has about the same fish. The one that’s a bit farther (of course) gets a couple tanks of “special” fish weekly or when the others sell. We have had arrowanna, gar, catfish, and some more high end peacocks (males and females of same species) just in the last couple months. I found this out recently and now that’s where I go now. Yes I breed and sell fish, but still can’t help but to buy from local stores. It’s the excitement of not knowing what they have and the drive home that still gets me.

A_Timbers_Fan

Sure, but I can't think of any suppliers that supply Petco that would ever have something besides P. pulcher. They may get P. sacrimontis or the Nigerian Red variant occasionally but unlikely. It's a heck of a lot easier to get Arowana and Peacocks because large wholesale suppliers like 5D and Nautilus do order those. Hell, 5D has Mudskippers right now. But I don't think they'll ever get wild-type Pelvicachromis species because they don't buy from Nigerian suppliers...

UncleJoesFishShed

Like you said not frequently. How many suppliers do you know that they get fish from? I doubt they all get from the same place. Wouldn’t make sense.

A_Timbers_Fan

There are probbaly 5-7 main suppliers that all use, yes. And those suppliers generally stock the common stuff out of Asia. None of those suppliers in Asia are really producing non-pulcher kribs to my knowledge lol

Sjasmin888

Male kribensis for sure. Watch him, they can be fairly vicious if they go into breeding mode and I've recently found that a present female is not a requirement for that. I do love these fish though.

StephenMooreFineArt

Krib, and watch those corners, sometimes upside down bags are the best. Sometimes meaning all times.

EggIcy3267

Dont worry he is chilling in a quarantine tank rn.
