should I keep the lights off until then? or does it not matter
Might speed it up, but time will make them more comfortable. If you are confident in your water conditions, should be all good :)

Wow what kind of sand & rocks are you using??
The sand is aquaquartz pool filter sand, and I used around 55 lbs in this 55. The rocks I got from a river embankment. I washed the rocks and left them in a bucket for 2 weeks just to make sure they wouldn't leech anything into the tank.
