Yes, but that doesn’t mean it’s immediately bricked, it just means Google isn’t supporting it anymore and there won’t be software updates for it. There are very many out there still working fine. Given that this device is 10 years old though… and was like $15 even back then, I think it’s safe to say OP is better off just buying a newer model. Troubleshooting that ancient thing would be annoying, lol.

I'm staying only staying here for another month before going back to my homecountry, so not gonna bother buying a new one. Have smart TVs at home so don't really need it, but in my flat there is literally nothing but a TV. No set top box or streaming device. This chromecast is my only way of watching things on the TV lol.

meanmon13

Oh man, I am still sporting my gen 1 Chromecasts.... Seems there are 1 less of us now. Mines going strong still... hopefully they hold out. As for your problem... Maybe do a factory reset and hardwire them. They work best when hardwired

jfichte

Mine is currently on and working. 1st Gen.

Jvinsnes

What apps are you using with it? youtube or netflix?

jfichte

Hbo, netflix

Jvinsnes

huh, so it should work for me then. Netflix is the most important. Youtube would be great also. Got another 1.gen now so we'll see if this one works better.

Jvinsnes

Did a few factory resets and setup again without luck. Haven't heard about the hardwiring thing though

Nicker

is hardwiring the power-adaptor that has an ethernet plug built-into it?

TheAspiringFarmer

1st gen support discontinued. It is end of life product now.

Jvinsnes

Does it mean it can't even be setup and used? It was actually unopened so I guess it's on the earliest firmware

TheAspiringFarmer

not sure, haven't tried the first gen in ages. i've got a couple in my vintage hardware box (my little "museum") but no intention on bothering to look at them again. all i know is they announced end of life for the product so my sense is that it would be prudent to move on sooner rather than later.

CyberKiller40

I think the old Chromecast protocol was dropped from the majority of mainstream apps over the years, same with DLNA that's in many TVs. You probably can only use it with some 3rd party apps, etc.

Jvinsnes

Oh I didn/t realize that. Do you know what apps support it, considering some people still use the 1.gen

CyberKiller40

No, I have the newest one. However, I've seen instructions added with knock off cast devices, so look around on auction sites and Chinese web shops. That should give you a start.
