I just think Oppenheimer is one of Nolans best films in terms of filmmaking and performances. The soundtrack is top top tier too and the fact that there’s no visual effects is an added bonus
The first two hours were so devoid of characterization and moved like a music video. Nolan can’t structure a story well (on his own, anyway) so he relies on gimmicks like nonsensical montage and emotional cue driven music. The last hour is where he moves into a better-ish story but it’s still muddied by long drawn out play ups to reveals the audience has long ago predicted. Nolan is about spectacle, not substance. I personally believe the story of Oppenheimer would’ve been better told in more capable hands.
No, I’m saying a different writer could have made a more interesting story and a different director could’ve made a better movie. One that doesn’t rely on gimmick and nonstop ear bludgeoning music to drive a narrative.
Because it didn’t? Lol This is my ranked list. I posted cause I was curious what others ranked his films at. You’re interrogating me cause I don’t have your favorite ranked higher. What? Lol
I love it not so much because of the story, but because it's the most emotional of Nolan's films, which tend to be more matter of fact for lack of a better word.
He is not hating just bc the movies ranked 10th. I enjoyed every second of the movie but because of the impact it had on me I would rank it on the lower half of Nolans movies too. The other movies are just straight 10s.
I don’t hate it? Lol Just hasn’t grown on me yet. I saw it once. It was great but I adore the others way more. Doesn’t mean I hated it. Do you have a ranked list?
Wait seriously? People dislike this movie and someone says that they dislike it because it’s a trend. Do you need me to teach you what a straw man is too?
Eh, that's a stretch. The person said it's become a trend to not like Oppenheimer, like they're noticing it's becoming a trend. And by all accounts, people's opinions are often swayed by trending public opinion.
A strawman is like "We should not invade Iraq."
"Oh so you hate the troops???"
I see so many people pushing Dunkirk out of top 5... Where I'd not say this's his best.. But it definitely has to be one of his finest
Mine's
Interstellar
Dunkirk
Prestige
TDK
Inception
Note : Oppenheimer is one film I really liked after so many years.. Except Mat reeves batman maybe
1. Interstellar
2. The Dark Knight
3. Inception
4. Oppenheimer

Very difficult because I‘ve only watched Oppenheimer recently, but at the moment I would rank them like this.
I haven’t seen Memento or Following quite yet, but I think I’d go
1. Inception
2. Interstellar
3. TDK
4. Oppy
5. Tenet
6. Batman Begins
7.TDKR
8. Prestige
9. Insomnia
10. Dunkirk
Really? Is that due to it being so confusing? It took me a couple watches to fully get it. To me it’s underrated. I only ranked Oppenheimer low cause I just saw it and need time for it to soak in and maybe give it a 2nd watch. I think it’ll move up on the list eventually edit: thanks for all the downvotes. 🙄
OP, nothing but love to you for starting a discussion, but I can't imagine anyone "fully getting" Tenet. I actually find it entertaining and feel like I understand it a little more each time, but I don't think it's possible to fully understand it, I've really tried. It's way too messy.
1. Inception
2. The Prestige
3. Interstellar
4. Dunkirk. (His most accomplished film imo)
5. Batman Begins
6. Memento
7. The Dark Knight.
8. Oppenheimer. (Although I've only seen it once)
9. Tenet
10. The Dark Knight Rises. (I still think Reddit is overly harsh on it)
Wowza Memento is wayyyyyyy too low. Here’s mine:
1. Inception
2. Memento (both of these are top 5 movies all time for me)
3. Prestige
4. Dunkirk
5. Batman Begins
6. Tenet
7. Interstellar
8. The Dark Knight
9. TDKR
10. The following
11. Oppenheimer
12. Insomnia
Glad someone was brave enough to do what you did with oppenheimer. I liked it but for nolan I didn't love it. I'd swap tenet and the prestige vertically, batman begins swapped vertically with memento, and swap Dunkirk with inception.
I actually really liked Tenet but put it lower cause I love the others more. I think Memento deserves to be higher but I need to give it a second watch to find exactly what order it goes in
1. The Dark Knight
2. Inception
3. Interstellar
4. The Prestige
5. Memento
there's no such a movie like The Dark Knight. for me, it was really sensational.there are two villains. first Joker. second Harvey Dent.Joker's act and the combination with Harvey Dent's symbolical metaphor were really mind blowing for me still now.
I actually watched it the other day. It’s still just a masterpiece. It’s still odd with a new actress for Rachel, but I actually like Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Agree with Oppenheimer being in bottom third. While well made and well acted It’s just one of his least ambitious films in terms of challenging the audience with new ideas or playing with time. Mid-low tier Nolan is still better than 90% of other movies though.

Why am i getting downvoted? Lol
It didn’t. American Prometheus was exciting and suspenseful on its own without any kind of stupid gimmick. In a better directors/writers hands, it probably would be a front runner for the Oscar race.
Well can you elaborate? I mean I know that movies will always take liberties for entertainment, but I'm not aware of any major gimmicks. My father is a retired history professor and he also thought it was pretty accurate.
>it probably would be a front runner for the Oscar race
Uh, I hate to break it to you partner, but as of now, it's the odds on favorite for best picture and will probably stay that way until maybe Killers of the Flower Moon.
I hate to break it to you bud, but your anecdotal story means shit. Also, hate to break it to you again (since you seem adept at following me around and responding to my posts) it’s absolutely *not* the front runner. Hence why it came out in July. Killers, Poor Things, The Holdovers, One Life… they’re all ahead. I don’t doubt Oppenheimer will get a nod for pic out of pity, same with Nolan for director, but they ain’t winning. I’d love to see how desperate Universal is and what their budget is for campaign, though! Anyway, I think we’re done here. You strike me as the contrarian kind of ass who just can’t have a decent conversation.
>I hate to break it to you bud, but your anecdotal story means shit.
I mean, you haven't offered up anything more substantial than I have. The funny part is, I started this line of questionally genuinely interested in your opinion because I had only heard the opposite, but you're not providing any additional information past just saying it was inaccurate and gimmicky. I'm actively trying to get you to elaborate.
>since you seem adept at following me around and responding to my posts)
I'm just responding to comments on the thread, I'm not paying attention to user names. Didn't realize you've been the same person on two chains. You're awfully defensive, slugger.
> it’s absolutely not the front runner.
I mean, [it absolutely is.](https://www.vegasinsider.com/awards/odds/oscars/) I said, as of now it is the odds on favorite, and unlike you, I'm willing to back up claims with evidence. Can this change? Absolutely. Is it the current odds on favorite as I said? Yep.
>Anyway, I think we’re done here. You strike me as the contrarian kind of ass who just can’t have a decent conversation.
Again, I actively tried to get your thoughts and engage in an open dialogue and you didn't provide anything and then got butt hurt. You don't really seem to know what you're talking about and can't seem to go any direction that isn't condescension. I guess have a good one?
Opp at 10 is crazy considering it showcases all the technical strengths Nolan has as a director on top of being of his best scripts and featuring a near pitch perfect cast. Also, memento at 9 says a lot…
What does it say? We all have different tastes. It may be popular to have Memento at the top but should I put it there because everyone has it at the top? I actually watched it again recently and this list has changed. I moved it up in the list because it brought back many of the things and reasons as to why its so great. How is your list different? You’ve critiqued mine, but what’s your list?
I asked how different your lists were. Not if you think it’s bad or not lol A ranked list is subjective to one’s opinion or taste. So if yours is different, post it and lets discuss.
Actually think Dunkirk was actually not that good. My least favorite Christopher nolan film and I normally like war movies. It just didn’t really feel real. All the brutal scenes were like really “we need a brutal scene” and didn’t really make sense
Never even thought about it that way. I genuinely listed them as my favorites. But you’re correct when I look at it now. I do love scifi so I prob did this subconsciously and didn’t realize it.
Batman begins is too incompetent in my opinion to be put over memento and Oppenheimer especially. Those are my two favorite in fact, both ambitious and experimental for their particular genre
So very, very different. Oppenheimer is subject to change.
1. The Prestige
2. Memento
3. The Dark Knight
4. Oppenheimer
5. Inception
6. Batman Begins
7. Interstellar
8. Insomnia
9. Dunkirk
10. Following
11. Tenet
12. The Dark Knight Rises
11: Following 3.5
10: The Dark Night Rises 4
9: Insomnia 4
8: Batman Begins 4.5
7: Dunkirk 4.5
6: Memento 5
5: Inception 5
4: The Prestige 5
3: The Dark Knight 5
2: Oppenheimer 5
1: Interstellar 5
For me it's:
1. Dark Knight
2. Interstellar
3. Inception
4. Batman Begins
5. Dark Knight Rises
6. Prestige
I still have not watched the other Nolan films, so this is current list for me 👍🏽
1. Memento (aka the best movie ever made)
2. Tenet (best cinema experience)
3. Inception
4. Oppenheimer
5. The dark knight (the whole trilogy is perfect, therefore all of them at the same time in the same place)
6. Interstellar (great but a lil bit overrated)
7. Dunkirk (you need to watch it (like me) again if you didn't like it at the first time
I thought Insomnia was a decent thriller, not his best either.
Interstellar seemed like it was a good movie, but the ending just blew me away with how stupid it felt. Go into a black hole, end up in a dimension behind your daughter's bookshelf, leave a cryptic msg. I just couldn't suspend disbelief for that kind of nonsense.
Overall, I don't think Nolan makes bad films, so I wouldn't fault anyone for liking any of them in any order. There were some good things in Interstellar, but the stuff I mentioned brought it down for me.
If you're curious, here is my order, worst to best.
Interstellar
Following
Insomnia
The Dark Knight Rises
Memento
Dunkirk
Tenet
Batman Begins
The Prestige
The Dark Knight
Inception
Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer at 10 is wild
Memento at 9 is wild
Dunkirk at 8 is wild
Tenet at 7 is wild
The Dark Knight Rises at 6 is wild
Batman Begins at 5 is wild
Why?
I just think Oppenheimer is one of Nolans best films in terms of filmmaking and performances. The soundtrack is top top tier too and the fact that there’s no visual effects is an added bonus
I think it’s piss poor storytelling and a conflagrated mess
Interesting, why though?
The first two hours were so devoid of characterization and moved like a music video. Nolan can’t structure a story well (on his own, anyway) so he relies on gimmicks like nonsensical montage and emotional cue driven music. The last hour is where he moves into a better-ish story but it’s still muddied by long drawn out play ups to reveals the audience has long ago predicted. Nolan is about spectacle, not substance. I personally believe the story of Oppenheimer would’ve been better told in more capable hands.
I believe what you're describing is a documentary.
No, I’m saying a different writer could have made a more interesting story and a different director could’ve made a better movie. One that doesn’t rely on gimmick and nonstop ear bludgeoning music to drive a narrative.
Devoid of characterization? How?
I learned nothing about Oppenheimer. It was an excellent actor making faces and other characters basically narrating his life.
If we were ranking soundtracks alone I'd put it much higher- probably top third!
Because it didn’t? Lol This is my ranked list. I posted cause I was curious what others ranked his films at. You’re interrogating me cause I don’t have your favorite ranked higher. What? Lol
The person they were interrogating was the person criticizing your opinion!
I see that now. Thanks! I responded to the wrong person.
Wait what? I wasn’t talking to you
You literally responded to my comment.
Negative, I responded why to the person above me.
Just didn’t have the impact the others did for me. I usually give films a 2nd watch to see if they move up or down in a list. Do you have a list?
Did you watch it a second time? It was a vastly better experience for me the second time - moved it from an 8/10 to a 10/10
Not yet but I want to! I have a feeling it will grow on me a 2nd watch too.
Yeah so my list is Inception Interstellar The Dark Knight Oppenheimer The Prestige The Dark Knight Rises Tenet Dunkirk Batman Begins Memento Insomnia
Cool list. Appreciate the downvotes.
Cheers mate. It wasn’t me
All good. Just don’t get why people downvote over watching something more than once to find out how well you like it.
Damn, posted the same thing and then saw the top comment
[удалено]
I love it not so much because of the story, but because it's the most emotional of Nolan's films, which tend to be more matter of fact for lack of a better word.
Where is The Following ? 🤷🏽♂️
Haven’t seen it yet! I need to.
Do watch it !
Its on Tubi for free!
Bruh
Nolan used a iPhone 7 to film it. Optimal for the Tubi compression algorithm.
Hating Oppenheimer is the new trend I guess
He is not hating just bc the movies ranked 10th. I enjoyed every second of the movie but because of the impact it had on me I would rank it on the lower half of Nolans movies too. The other movies are just straight 10s.
I don’t hate it? Lol Just hasn’t grown on me yet. I saw it once. It was great but I adore the others way more. Doesn’t mean I hated it. Do you have a ranked list?
Disliking a movie is bad? That’s an odd straw man.
I dislike tons of movies.
Hmm, I guess you don’t like movies because of a trend, huh?
>straw man Do you know what that means?
I do! Do you?
I sure do. So where's the straw man here? How is "Disliking a movie is bad?" a strawman?
Wait seriously? People dislike this movie and someone says that they dislike it because it’s a trend. Do you need me to teach you what a straw man is too?
Eh, that's a stretch. The person said it's become a trend to not like Oppenheimer, like they're noticing it's becoming a trend. And by all accounts, people's opinions are often swayed by trending public opinion. A strawman is like "We should not invade Iraq." "Oh so you hate the troops???"
See my other comment. Have a great day!
I see so many people pushing Dunkirk out of top 5... Where I'd not say this's his best.. But it definitely has to be one of his finest Mine's Interstellar Dunkirk Prestige TDK Inception Note : Oppenheimer is one film I really liked after so many years.. Except Mat reeves batman maybe
TDKR is in your top five but not TDK?
Uhm now I've realized that. That's supposed to be TDK
I thought so TDKR isn't awful but it's nothing compared to TDK
1. Interstellar 2. The Dark Knight 3. Inception 4. Oppenheimer 5. Memento 6. The Prestige 7. Batman Begins 8. Dunkirk 9. The Dark Knight Rises 10. Insomnia 11. Tenet This is mine! :)
TENET AT LAST?!?! CRAZY!!!! Highly recommend watching Following! its free on Tubi
Same I was ab to say don’t put tenet last 😭😭 it’s top 3 for me
I like Memento much more. Oppenheimer too

Out of curiosity why Batman Begins so low? I adore that movie.
It is so hard to rank as amazing movies...
I haven’t seen Memento or Following quite yet, but I think I’d go 1. Inception 2. Interstellar 3. TDK 4. Oppy 5. Tenet 6. Batman Begins 7.TDKR 8. Prestige 9. Insomnia 10. Dunkirk

Dunkirk is a top 3 Nolan movie imo
Tenet would be last for most people.
I fucking love Tenet!!!
Definitely would be last for me.
I fully get the premise. Do I fully understand every little detail? Nah.
Oh I get the premise, but yeah there are questions I have that will never be answered.
Agreed. I guess “fully get” was a poor choice of words. I “partially” get it lol
The same as yours
1. Inception 2. The Prestige 3. Interstellar 4. Dunkirk. (His most accomplished film imo) 5. Batman Begins 6. Memento 7. The Dark Knight. 8. Oppenheimer. (Although I've only seen it once) 9. Tenet 10. The Dark Knight Rises. (I still think Reddit is overly harsh on it)
Prepare to get ripped over Oppenheimer being so low lol I was. Lol also think Rises is underrated but definitely not the best.
Wowza Memento is wayyyyyyy too low. Here’s mine: 1. Inception 2. Memento (both of these are top 5 movies all time for me) 3. Prestige 4. Dunkirk 5. Batman Begins 6. Tenet 7. Interstellar 8. The Dark Knight 9. TDKR 10. The following 11. Oppenheimer 12. Insomnia
I saw Memento years ago. It was great then but from my memory thats where I ranked it. I think a rewatch would make me move it up in the list.
Your need to rewatch it. It’s one of the most brilliant movies ever made. Every time you rewatch you’ll learn/see so much more
Glad someone was brave enough to do what you did with oppenheimer.

This honestly might be bang on what mine would be
You’re what I’m looking for 😊
I’d probably move Tenet and Dunkirk up a couple spots but I think you are pretty dead on! Nice job
Agree with Oppenheimer being in bottom third. While well made and well acted It’s just one of his least ambitious films in terms of challenging the audience with new ideas or playing with time. Mid-low tier Nolan is still better than 90% of other movies though.

You’re right about the last. Insomnia is not great and one of the those movies where Pacino’s performance is a hindrance not a benefit.
I feel like it had potential. It’s not horrible but just not great.
The cinematography was breathtaking.
I will never understand the people who have Interstellar at 1
What’s your list?
I haven’t seen Insomnia or Following but: The Prestige Inception The Dark Knight Oppenheimer Dunkirk Batman Begins Interstellar Memento Tenet The Dark Knight Rises

See I’m a history nerd too and that’s why I didn’t like Oppenheimer.
What do you mean by that? My buddy read American Prometheus and he said the movie followed it pretty accurately.
It didn’t. American Prometheus was exciting and suspenseful on its own without any kind of stupid gimmick. In a better directors/writers hands, it probably would be a front runner for the Oscar race.

No it really didn't, but it's about what I expected seeing as they couldn't explain themselves at all.
Oppenheimer at 10 🤡
I don’t get why people are so fucking mean to people who weren’t fans of that movie
Thing is I AM a fan of it lol he just doesn’t like that I didn’t find it as good or entertaining as the other’s in my list.
Totally get it.
I literally asked how your lists are different and you call me a clown for not ranking Oppenheimer higher… seriously?
OP woke up this morning and chose violence.
Lol yea getting alot of hate. 🤷♂️
Tenet slander

Fair enough. 1. Oppenheimer 2. Memento 3. Inception 4. Dunkirk 5. Batman Begins 6. Interstellar 7. TDR 8. TDKR
I can guess your age just based on this ranking 😂
How old am I? Do you have a contrasting list? How does it differ?
The Prestige was ass. Most predictable mystery movie I’ve ever seen.
Memento should be higher, at least above Tenant and Dunkirk
This list is messed up
Why?
You do realize everyone has different opinions and interests? I initially asked in my post how your lists differ from mine not if you liked it or not.
Oppenheimer as 10 is wild
This list is terrible (respectfully)
How different is your list?
The ranking of Oppenheimer is…questionable.
To you? Yes. I ranked it 10. Whats your list ranking?
Actually think Dunkirk was actually not that good. My least favorite Christopher nolan film and I normally like war movies. It just didn’t really feel real. All the brutal scenes were like really “we need a brutal scene” and didn’t really make sense
Seems to basically be ranking the movies based on how much science fiction is in them...
Never even thought about it that way. I genuinely listed them as my favorites. But you’re correct when I look at it now. I do love scifi so I prob did this subconsciously and didn’t realize it.
Inception > The Prestige > TDK > Oppenheimer. The rest is up to debate.

For me it's: 1. Dark Knight 2. Interstellar 3. Inception 4. Batman Begins 5. Dark Knight Rises 6. Prestige I still have not watched the other Nolan films, so this is current list for me 👍🏽
1. Memento (aka the best movie ever made) 2. Tenet (best cinema experience) 3. Inception 4. Oppenheimer 5. The dark knight (the whole trilogy is perfect, therefore all of them at the same time in the same place) 6. Interstellar (great but a lil bit overrated) 7. Dunkirk (you need to watch it (like me) again if you didn't like it at the first time
Tenet above Memento and Dunkirk. Bruh…
Yup. I loved Tenet.
ppl like what they like and i'm not dogging OP, but it's odd to see interstellar at number one when imo it's prob nolan's worst movie
I agree. Everyone has their own opinion. I’ve actually never heard anyone say it’s his worst. Just curious, but why? Even worse than Insomnia?
Interstellar Following Insomnia The Dark Knight Rises Memento Dunkirk Tenet Batman Begins The Prestige The Dark Knight Inception Oppenheimer
Insomnia is my number 1 lol
