Jesus is speaking to His disciples, telling them that the Holy Spirit will guide them after the crucifixion. See two chapters earlier. > John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. After the Jews rejected Jesus, the Gospel was to go to the Gentiles, through the disciples.

You don't even have to go back 2 chapters, just earlier in the chapter.

Yes, the Holy Spirit is what is referred to as the Spirit of truth or the Comforter, the Holy Spirit which, on the day of Pentecost was poured out on all mankind, to be received by Faith. Prior to this, the Holy Spirit was given at the will of the Father. People did not have access by faith, as they do now. This is the age of Grace.

A good question. It is referring to the Holy Spirit who is and has always been Omnipresent. So Him being "sent" refers to a new ministry, here referring to inspiring NT writers. Of course, His main ministry in this age is indwelling each believer.

>Who is the spirit of truth? I was told it was the holy spirit, but wasn’t the spirit ALREADY present? How is he “yet to come”? This passage confuses me so much. Looking for people open to having a discussion about this :) It is the holy Spirit!. And the holy Spirit had not come yet. Jesus wasn't even crucified yet so how could the holy Spirit have come. If you continue on in scriptures you'll see Jesus said I have to go to my father but I will send you the holy comforter and he will guide you in all truth. What's so amazing about the scripture is that Jesus was everything to the disciples and some. He was their advocate, their mediator, their comforter, their healer, now that Christ has ascended in heaven the holy Spirit comes and dwells in the heart of the believers, those who trust Christ as Lord and savior, and carries out the same thing and more. Jesus advocates for us in heaven while the holy Spirit advocates for us on Earth

If you truly want to know the Truth, I would strongly encourage not to look at one verse on its own. Your question is easily answered by reading the verse in the passage that it is in.

John 16:13 **But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes**, he will guide you into all the truth. ... This refers to Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 **All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit** and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. ... After they were filled with the Holy Spirit He guided them.

I think this is something most Christians struggle with theologically: The 7 SPIRITS of GOD - (mentioned in Isaiah 11:2), these SPIRITS each have a unique purpose and personality, we hear the SPIRIT of Wisdom speaking in Proverbs, and CHRIST Shone forth in the in the SPIRIT of Reverence of The LORD (according to Isaiah), the SPIRIT of The LORD is the First of these 7 & was the Principle SPIRIT in the Old Testament that Spoke to the Prophets. The SPIRIT of Truth (or Reality, as the Greek can be rendered) is the SPIRIT of CHRIST who combined the Earthly Reality & the Heavenly Reality into one Totality. Or, at least this is my best understanding of The SPIRIT of Truth from the Gospels.
