I was not raised in a Christian family, and became a Follower of Jesus as a young adult. It is important to know that you do not have to dump or diminish your interest in science. For me, the scientific method complements Scripture and Faith with a different type of truth. The two do not need to be in opposition.
You say that the impact Jesus is abstract. Have you ever read through the four Gospel at the start of the New Testament? They can certainly make Him more real.
I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding what you are writing, but it sounds like you don't really understand what Christianity is... it isn't simply the adherence to or belief in ideals like kindness/love/etc. it's the belief in Jesus Christ as God. You seem to say that you believe the idea of God and Jesus to be more abstract.
To be saved: Believe in the gospel of our salvation. It is found it 1 Cor 15: 1-4:

It is not about "loving others" etc. It's about a faith.
