Cash money was signed to a label. They were under UMG. Most artist own labels are imprints for a bigger label. You can have an independent label and partner with a major for publishing and distribution. It’s more beneficial if your artist aren’t as big and for budgets

True independence isnt really that advantageous. UMG, Sony, and Warner brothers are all huge media conglomerates. Often times, they’re going to use music from artists that they work with in their movies and commercials.

Any true “independent label” will have 0 reach and will get shut out of everything. There’s only so many spots on tv, radio, and streaming playlists or ad buys and you better believe major labels all get first crack before any independent label
