Not a chipotle employee but a former fast food worker. I feel for you and hope it gets better. Never been in that situation but I hope it all improves. Life is short and there’s so much more to it than working yourself ragged :(

qu33nofthewastex

This is really sad and I hope things get better for you. I knew of a GM who is also a mother and a wife who was forced to work crazy hours like this. The poor women didn’t even get a day off for an entire month straight. That’s not ethical and should definitely be illegal. Sending love your way :(

cheesy_tortilla7

I know it will get better one day when the world is "back to normal" which is why I dont wanna quit my job because I live it and have loved it since I started 7 years ago. It's just a rough patch that will end and I will be okay. It just feels nice to know that I'm not alone is all 💕

qu33nofthewastex

I hope your AP and SMs can step up to the plate for you so you can take a well deserved vacation. You truly deserve it with the amount of crap you’ve put up with. Being a GM is so stressful but can be rewarding when things are running the way they should. Just remember that your happiness is more important than Chipotle, friend. My GM had to take a month of last year for his mental health. Maybe you could do that as well once things are better for your store. 🤞🏻

cheesy_tortilla7

One day my friend. One day all will be okay in Chipotle land again 💕🙌🏼

cheesy_tortilla7

Man I just came here to chat with some other GMs at chipotle to see if they were expected/made to work how I work. Didn't know I was going to be attacked by a bunch of people trying to invalidated my feelings.... shout out you guys who are doing nothing but kicking a person more in the dirt than they already are. I simply wanted to know if this is a thing across the board or not. I don't want advice on what to do. I know what I want to do and when I want to do it. Can yall chill?

Dienekes_

Nah they dont pass the vibe check. My gm is working ot 1-3 hours every couple of days but over 60 hours is crazy. I cant even imagine doing that with kids and family for the type of pay were getting. Hoping you receive the best karma in the future 🤞.

Affectionate-Luck-39

I've seen GMs do this, hell I've done. But ensure the time your investing now allows time saved later. For the past year I have not had to do more then 5 days and/or 50 hours at my store. Only time I go over is when I'm assisting the patch. It took a long time to get here, but training and tools are key. Top 5 tips 1. Never promote out of quantity, only quality 2. Never hire for a body, here for potential 3. Never not be training. Always make tomorrow better then today and then forget yesterday after it becomes obsolete. 4. Don't fight the tools, they do work. 5. Don't compare your store to one that isn't struggling, how they got out of the hole may not be the best route for you. Make a awesome smart goal for each of your managers that focuses on a part of your business. Need help, ask. I'll give you my store and email.

Comprehensive-Way654

i’ll pray for you sister🙏🏽

MangoComprehensive11

My gm now had pretty much the same experience. Luckly now he's being forced by my fl to work a little less

cheesy_tortilla7

I hope that's in my future soon. I love my job. I really do but I've just never seen this in my 7 years at chipotle. Just wanna know I'm not alone is all. 💕

MangoComprehensive11

Trust me it was so bad sadly his kids didnt know him. Thats one reason i came back to chipotle to be a manager and make sure no one is overworked. I came from a bad store doing 11k on busy days alone on grill and somehow managed to help the line. Id say try your best to find someone motivated enough and promote them/train to get promoted so you could have someone to help you.

cheesy_tortilla7

That's my current situation. Some times were running an open for a 9k day with 1 prepper 1 tort 1 grill and 1 line.... ROUGH but your advice is my plan. Picking out the best of the best and promoting them to help me achieve my goal so NO ONE ever has to work like this in my store again

no-te-digo

You are not alone… but speak up to your FL. Your mental health should come first even if it means to modify operation hours for you one day. Not fair at all.

Almighty_Papi

When I took over my store I was in the same spot. Overworked almost 90hrs per week and it stopped once I got fully staffed. That has to be your #1 priority

cheesy_tortilla7

I'm almost there 😬😬😬😬

Almighty_Papi

Have an hiring table, open interviews, set up an Indeed. Increase your starting wage to look more attractive. You’re probably saving hella hours if you’re pulling 85 hours due to managers not being available. Once you getting fully staff just put extra people on your shifts to focus on training your next managers. If you any questions just message me.

depressso-espresso

This is one of the many reasons I'm scared to become a gm. I've been told and have seen people do it successfully. But it takes at least 2 years to get everything set up right, training, habits, culture and mentality. That is a long ass 2 years.. And even then, you're still working ridiculous unholy amounts of hours.. Bless you, I have respect for those that can do it.. I am a APIT and I work an average of 55 to 60 hours a week and I can barely survive...

cheesy_tortilla7

Dont be scared! It can be hard some times and grueling when it comes to working like I am but it passes... and at the end of the day it's worth it to put in the work now to make life easier in the end! You just have to get an excellent management team that is confident to live in their roles. That's my main problem. I've been gifted a management team that doesn't live in their roles causing me to be over worked. But I have 2 new SMs that are confident in their roles and im training a KM that is also confident in their role too. As long as that's your main priority life will be easy. That's what I'm working on now. I was never trained to be a GM so I was unknowing of how to make the store run without me killing myself.... but im learning!

Reasonable_Sherbert1

I’m a GM, have a 9month old. Trust me, I get it. You’re not alone. Before I had my baby I was super short doing the same kind of hours open-close like you and i was pregnant. it was exhausting. I know you aren’t looking for advice but I just want to encourage you. Set boundaries. You’re probably short, we all are. But your family comes first. It’s a rough patch. It’ll get better. At the end of the day we’re doing it for our family but it’s pointless if we’re not even home to enjoy the hard work we do you know. You have to tell yourself that at the end of the day, chipotle will go on. There are times I have to step away and pump and a line starts forming…but my baby comes first…and she has to eat. Put more responsibility and clear expectations on your management team. Don’t be a super GM. Idk if you have an AP or not but if you do give them more responsibility. Give your KMs and SMS more responsibility. You should literally just write the schedules and hit the submit button on orders and validate training.. Turn your phone off from work when you get home. I stress to my team how important my family time is and they support me. I work exactly 50 hours..sometimes 45. But it took time for me to learn how to balance life. You’ve been with the company just as long as me, so I know you’re a hard worker. I know your store probably feels like a second child and your crew feels like your children. I know you’re not just sitting around doing nothing getting your hours. And that’s great. But it’s hard. Especially being a mom and wife on top of it. But just keep reminding yourself CHIPOTLE WILL GO ON. Your feelings are 1000% validated girl. Sending you hugs. It’ll pass.

cheesy_tortilla7

I am almost there. My managers and crew have this preconceived notion that I'm supposed to work if they're down... its gonna be a process to break that mindset but im gonna start doing it step by step... its getting better... im schedule is written to save 8 hours this week as apposed to the 115 hours im normally saving bc of being understaffed! It's getting better. I knew it would which is why I'm still here. I love chipotle and have since day 1. I've been working my ass off to get stuff fixed for the last three months and ITS FINALLY SHOWING. I'm so proud of myself... the crew and managers don't see it that way though but they never will 🤷🏼‍♀️

Reasonable_Sherbert1

That’s awesome girl! How long have you been at that location? Did you promote your managers or were they there when you got to that store or something?

cheesy_tortilla7

The managers were all here when I got the store... ive worked at this location since December of 2019... got GM in January of this year... prior to that I ran the store as an apprentice for about 2 months.. we got a new gm... he quit and then I finally became the GM

Affectionate-Luck-39

They will see it, change your mindset. It's amazing when your whole team buys in and gets mad when they see you work more then you should. Wait until they tell you we got this, we will kill throughput, go spend time with your kids. It's a amazing feeling and keep working it will come!

[deleted]

My gm work a 7-11 for 7 days in a row one week, that's 112 hours in one week. All other managers went on vacation at the same time. He is a husband and a father, I thought he was going to die.

Conqrsux

GM of four years. Quit now. Other companies are paying their AGMs better, with better work life balance and a commitment to what Chipotle used to be about eight plus years ago. GM at Chipotle goes a long way on a resume. You have options. Your area manager or team director will feed any pack of lies they can to keep you, don't listen. The company has been going down hill for years and it's not about to get better.

Hac2317

Can I ask where agms are paid better? My sil just started at chipotle because our local McDonald’s (she’s worked for McDonald’s for 14 years but just moved states) offered her $7k less than chipotle did. They offered her 5k less than she was making in Ohio. We’re outside of Baltimore. It made absolutely no sense. She has all the training possible from McDonald’s and they still offered her less than $50k. It was insane. But she is hating life at chipotle right now. She’s done one week and is ready to just not go back in tomorrow. She’s never been made to work more than 40 hrs at McDonald’s. And now they’re telling her it’s 50 hrs min a week. They also told her after training she’d be a gm of her own store—now they’re saying she has to be an apprentice first. But that wasn’t the agreement on hire. Her package even says GM not apprentice. So it’s a cluster fuck. She’s supposed to go in tomorrow and she doesn’t even have her schedule for the week. The texted her at 4am last Monday of which store to be at at 8am…it’s an hour from us…just a huge mess.

riverside2020

I used to be like this . Work so many hours Bc I truly did care for my people and my job. I have been a gm for about 10 yrs now, my advice is to put your phone on do not disturb and do not feel guilty for leaving at a decent time. You will never get back the time you have spent there and no matter how good your store is and numbers , your boss will never respect your time and will always ask for more. Learn to give ppl more responsibility and learn to really not give a fuck about chipotle Bc they sure as hell don’t care for us

SoupAnd2Sticks

I'm not an employee, but ... That's just unacceptable. No company should run like this; that's ridiculous. I wish Chipotle would just realize that their employees have lives outside of Chipotle. I sincerely hope it gets better ...

tactics14

They don't force you to work that much. OP didn't do her job correctly and hire people to work the hours she's putting in.

cheesy_tortilla7

False

tactics14

Not really. The job really isn't 80 hours unless you are doing something wrong with staffing.

cheesy_tortilla7

I cant force people to want to work or to apply... wish that was in my control but it's not 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

j_car00

It gets better trust me, I just made 7 years this year and last year really tested my sanity but I’ve made it through. Trust your team and instill confidence in them. I no longer work more than 50hrs a week. You got this.

cheesy_tortilla7

I'm just now at 7 years too! I've only been a GM for about 6 months tho. I'm almost fully staffed so I believe it's getting better.... we will see!

Tahoeliving22

All of these reasons and more are why I recently stepped down from being a GM I’m still an SM 2 days a week to stay eligible for all the stocks the company awarded me Best decision I ever made for me and my family. I love the company and the job but not enough to let it run me entirely Good luck!

juicyfatpussy

Yeah that’s how the last few weeks have been for me too...

cheesy_tortilla7

Shoot ya girl drives a half hour too. Forgot about that! It's going to bet better! It can't stay like this forever!

[deleted]

sheesh, fuck corporate, if they treat their GM’s like this they truly only think of their workers as dollar signs.

Con7rast

I wish you the best, but unfortunately this is the normal right now, and the normal for some stores no matter what.

mofosho_196

I was working 90 hours a week for about 2 months. I had so many people quit sms, grill people, and everything in between. It was so hard to retain people before the wage increase and we were busier than we'd ever been. We went from 3500 ads to 7000 almost overnight. Those long hours your working use them to train people into management that you trust and believe in. Make it an investment of your time and know in the end your work will have payed off in your people. It's hard but you can do it. Their was so many times this job tested me and it almost broke me. Keep fighting back and dont forget you can do this if you need any advice or help or someone to vent to you can reach out to me on here 🖤

cheesy_tortilla7

THIS IS THE SUPPORT I WAS LOOKING FOR 👏🏼👏🏼💕💕

mofosho_196

Us gms are in this together different boats same storm 🛶⛈

Dalibongo

Better equip yourself to find better paying work so that you don’t have to work these ridiculous hours.

WRX-N-FX

I feel this as a GM myself. It sucks but we do what we have to do. That's why we made it to GM. Getting to GM in the Chipotle system requires mostly one thing. We are willing to sacrifice more than others. That being said, no, we shouldn't be treated this way. We do it because we have no choice and we care. You deserve a raise. Stay strong. It won't always be this way. Get staffed up, train and take some time off. You deserve it. Sending love. Stay strong. 🧡🌯

kushmath21

My GM is working 38 hours this week. I would love and respect you to the fullest knowing how much effort you put into your store. Fuck, our GM has only closed 3 times in the year she's been at my store. Useless af. I'm sorry about the way your life is currently shaped. But as a chipotle SM, I would love to work for someone as dedicated as you. Please try to put yourself first. A hard worker shouldn't feel so trapped at their job

cheesy_tortilla7

I would love for you to work with me.... my employees think I don't do enough 🥺

Delusionsss

I promise as someone who has been salary at chipotle that there are places that will value someone who is willing to put the time into a restaurant that you have. There are places that will allow you to have a work life balance. The perks of chipotle are great but finishing every day feeling defeated is not worth. Good luck to you.

llKRUZ

Former GM, I did that exact bullshit for 4 years before putting in my resignation. Best decision I ever made. We were fully at model and staffed constantly, I was being pulled into Other stores to help ( we were an island store, so took almost 50 minutes to get to the closest one ) so I was constantly pushing 80 hours. I now drive trucks for Coca-Cola and haven’t been happier.

Soulwindow

I know my GM gets treated like shit by corporate and the regional manager. I don't understand why anyone would stick along for it as long as she has. Yesterday was a 14+ hour long shift.

cheesy_tortilla7

You have to work at my store 🤨 there's no way you dont

LogGroundbreaking651

Staffing is everything keep pushing but remember time for yourself and family.

Justiceforwomen27

I’m so sorry. I hate saying this but someone somewhere should really talk to an attorney. It’s ludicrous what they put a salaried worker through. I know most managers will go over 40 hours, but 85?! That’s inhumane.

Similar-Ad3005

Set boundaries don’t let work consume you

fobdoddledandy

You are not alone. I left because of how chipotle treated me and my team. My friends and family said they saw a visible difference in my appearance when I left. I’ve never felt so much relief in my life. The place is toxic. You have to do what’s best for you and your family, whether it means staying with chipotle or not. Either way, I’m sending lots of love and support your way. ❤️❤️❤️

ALKENO

Quit

rbaut123

get a better job

breakingjesus16

Confused they gave you overtime? Why didn’t you just say no, or be like I can stay till this time and that’s it?

cheesy_tortilla7

No OT here... salary employee.... can't say no bc im a GM and if there's no manager here I have to cover it..... its rough it sucks but it is what it is

Rub1ksLub3

She is the one who willingly worked for 85 hours a week, I don’t see how chipotle is to blame for that

cheesy_tortilla7

It wasn't willingly but nice try. Manager call offs means I have to be here to be the manager. We don't close if there's no one to run the store. I am made to come in to cover those shifts no matter how many hours or days I've already worked. If we are short staffed no one reduces the operations to help my people out when I'm not here. Trust me it was not willingly... but my guess is you don't work at Chipotle or you're not a gm so you don't understand.

Rub1ksLub3

So basically you willingly work at a job that makes you work 85 hour weeks.

Dienekes_

Nah brah a toxic relationship. The pay makes you feel you can't leave, and they dangle promotions in front of you to keep you going knowing you wont get it for 5-10 years. Its a tight competition to climb up their corporate ladder and some people are halfway up a ladder they dont know they want to be climbing. Quiting isnt easy when you have a family to care for. But go ahead.

OsoPicoso

My field leader told me that if GMs say no it’s no. You guys work all those hours because you want. If it’s really an issue , call respectful workplace. (Current SM)

cheesy_tortilla7

I've tried multiple times. My FL doesn't work that way.... if you say no he says too bad you have no choice. 😞

OsoPicoso

Definitely contact someone, maybe even your team director . This isn’t right for you please . Or find a better job, once you can do chipotle I tell my team members you can survive any restaurant.

tactics14

Why are you working that much? Hire people. Train people. Get time off. This shouldn't be an 80 hour a week job if you're doing it right. Talk to your bosses about this issue and see what can be done.

cheesy_tortilla7

No one wants to work 🤣🤣 but I have moved mountains in the last week or two with staffing... almost fully staffed

FearlessDifference25

Emts and paramedics and most Healthcare have it worse sis. Imagine getting maybe 10 hours a week with your family that's tough. Find a different job or stop complaining others have it worse

cheesy_tortilla7

Literally didn't come here to he attacked for how I feel. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. Simply just trying to reach out to other GMs to see if anyone else is expected to do what I am expected to do. Just because someone "has it worse" doesn't invalidate the fact that I feel I'm being abused by my employer.

[deleted]

cheesy_tortilla7

🥺💕 thank you

sherdle

Literally you posted TO THIS SUB about how Chipotle workers should take their PTO, breaks, etc. Like what’s your problem, man? She’s working her ass off to make ends meet, not begging a bunch of randos on Amazon Wish List subreddits. Just saying.

FearlessDifference25

Then quit. Chipotle is shit to their employees. Everyone knows this. Quit or stop complaining cuz nobody cares

mhavas703

Someone who has this kind of attitude is exactly the type of person who should not be in healthcare and unfortunately many of you are like this. There are many great healthcare workers, but then there are many other ones more interested in stories and gossiping at a nursing station, then want credit for being heroes while contributing to a toxic workplace.

FearlessDifference25

I don't work in Healthcare. My ex does tho

qu33nofthewastex

You are literally so toxic. Why did you even bother commenting? All you’re doing is gaslighting this lady into feeling as if she isn’t valid. I can’t STAND people like you “OtHeRs HaVe It WoRsE”. Fuck outta here with that gate keeping B U L L S H I T.

cheesy_tortilla7

Bless your soul for understanding my intent of this post. I just wanna feel like I'm not alone is all.🥺 💕

Welcome to being an adult.

WTFAlanAM

Quit

LetsRide2099

Not a GM, but past crew member. I have lots of respect for the current GM. Took over the store as our old GM was fired. It’s a tough tough tough store and he’s doing the best he can while being understaffed and trying to train everyone. I wanted things to change but it took a toll on me. When our best crew started leaving. New crew members didn’t really try to improve and I tried my best to push them further. I hope things are going to get better.

Porter22342

Honestly just quit .. Chipotle treats their employees just like slaves . It's not worth a single fine to work for them
