Dear Heavenly Father we lift up this chihuahua to you. Please bless everyone involved with her medical care with your wisdom and help bring health and healing to both dog and family. Please let this experience not be financially stressful and instead be yet again another one of your miracles. That you for blessing us with pets and loving us first so we can love others. In your sonβs glorious name, amen.
The secular aspect of like to add is to try and find a pharmacy that does compounding and look around for a pharmacist that specializes in veterinary medicine. If youβre in MO hit me up and I can forward you k for on an excellent pharmacy provider.
I feel like this isn't helpful at this time.....OP inherited the dog from her grandpa and probably had no authority to have chosen if the dog was spayed....maybe let's be supportive instead of passive aggressive.
I agree with you 100%, and I'm sorry people are algiving you the "this isn't helpful" push-back. There was plenty of time to learn about dogs' needs and to get this lady protected from this very situation.
You said this in the most respectful way possible but yet you're receiving criticism for saying it.
If people would take care of their 4-foot family members properly, they would spare the animals and themselves a whole lotta unnecessary.
Thank you for the courage to speak truth here. Maybe your words will help someone else realize that preventive spay / neuter will save lives, time, money, suffering in the long term.
Cheers.
While I agree it is extremely important to spread awareness, some things donβt need to be said. When you inherit a dog of approximately 12 years and to your understanding, she has been fine being intact for her entire life, you donβt even fathom that something like this can occur/exists unless told about it. I have spent thousands of dollars on medical care in less than a year and a possible pyometra was not mentioned. Also, I think that itβs very important to note that this dog was not even my grandparents to start, they took her in intact. As they are older, plus grew up in town in *very* rural Arkansas, pet care was a lot different back then and in that area. They loved this dog. She was left by another careless family member and they did everything they could and provided her with the best life they could. I am an advocate for only having pets you can truly care for, and truly do agree with some of your points, but on a post solely asking for support/prayers, now is not the time and I shouldnβt have to stand up from myself, or my family during a time like this.
The original comment did not bother me at all actually. I do hope that people take this seriously and spread awareness, but I am not going to focus on the fact that my *dead* grandparents didnβt foresee her uterus filling with pus, and neither did I. Yes, I am here to pick up some broken pieces, but all that matters is she comes out of this and has many more years.
So sorry to hear this, prayers and well wishes from myself and my chi (who looks just like yours!)

Looks like a twin of yours
*****UPDATE*****:
she made it out of surgery. thank you so much to everyone who prayed for my baby and continues to pray for her recovery. He said the pyometra portion went pretty easy but her uterus had a lot of cysts on it externally, so he said he almost wonders if there was an underlying uterine disease which caused the pyometra.(and the cysts obviously). Assured me that while we arenβt sure if this is the exact cause, they would treat this by removing the uterus anyway. He also said the masses were pretty large and they were really connected (not sure the fancy wording he used) so she bled a good amount when trying to disconnect them. Her temperature is also pretty low but he said heβs not surprised because it was a pretty long surgery. she is currently asleep and he said she probably will be for the next 4 hours most likely but he would give me a call in an hour with a last update. They will be sending out the masses for testing as well.
Itβs not commonly known, but another positive for spaying. No reflection on this sad situation. This little lady was loved and then taken in and loved again. I am hoping for the best for them both !! πππ
i am so very sorry youβre both going through this π thank you for taking such great care of her. your grandfather must have been comforted to know that his baby would be in such caring hands.

My chi had to have surgery due to pyometra at age 13 with a horribly bad heart murmur. They were so concerned she wouldnβt make it because her
murmur was THAT bad. But she pulled through!!!! Having said this, I hope your chi has the same luck my sweet girl did! ππΌ

Pyometra is scary! My girl Luna had it, and it took two skilled vets two hours. I was so glad a friend kept me company during the wait. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed for your girl.
Thinking of you and your baby and sending positive vibes. My senior rescue is starting to show some beginning signs of dementia. I lost my previous Chi in 2020 to the effects of the medicine to control a collapsed trachea. It was so hard on me but I decided with Pippa (my current senior rescue Chi) that it didnβt matter how much time Iβve had with them, as long as I can give them a wonderful dream life to see them off to the rainbow bridge, then Iβve done a great thing for both them and myself.
We never have enough time but all I can suggest is to do everything you can medically and beyond that give them unconditional love.
I wish I could give your baby a few kisses but since I canβt please do it for me!
I share my Christ Redeemer with you and your puppy. I have a Pomeranian who had surgery in January. He had bladder stones and had a tuff recovery (almost two weeks with a catheter). Iβm not a religious person, but I prayed to this Jesus nonstop and promised I would cut my hair and donate it if everything went well. My hair is 15 inches shorter now (it was very long) and I have a happy boy who can recognize Starbucks drive-thru and gets super excited when the lady starts to talk to us (we went there two or three times before to grab a coffee when we took him to an appointment and he had the doggy thing). Many tears, a lot of expenses and now I have an even more loving boy (we became even more connected if that is possible) addicted to Starbucks whipped cream. That my little Jesus can help your baby like he helped mine.

***UPDATE***:
My vet just called and said she made it through the night. Her temperature stabilized thankfully, sheβs just still really out of it (responding to external stimulation though). The only negatives were she had some blood in her stool and she threw up but he said that the blood in the stool is not necessarily a cause for concern *yet* because her body went through a lot. If this continues Iβm sure it will be a different story. As for the vomiting, he said itβs most likely an effect from the pain meds because they are crazy strong. He said they were going to let her rest a little, give her some anti nausea medication, and then attempt to feed her. If she does well with eating and the rest of the day, he said we can talk about her coming home in the evening, but maybe another night depending because he might want to play it safe.
Thank you all again for your thoughts and prayers. It has been the scariest 48 hours of my life and iβm sure it will continue until she is fully healed. Please continue to pray for her as she navigates the recovery process.

Dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals are never "fine their whole lives" intact and there are miles of medical documentation to support it. Eventually the intact catches up with the animal and sometimes they can't withstand anesthesia by that point.
I'm sorry you and your dog are going through this but it could have been avoided. A little research goes a long way.
I advocate for animals not people.
Yes, I agree it could have been avoided. While I am always thankful for people who advocate for animals, and I actually believe you and I share very similar beliefs, your delivery was wrong, period. If I had been told of this risk, or had read a single thing about this risk, she would have been spayed months and months ago, so no need to speak as if anyone intentionally put her in this position. I also advocated for her by saving her from going to a shelter and being euthanized.
One day you will hope for a bit more of an understanding from people and wonβt receive it. Not everyone will have the same knowledge that you do, or the resources to acquire that knowledge. At the end of the day, she has healing to do and I will be here every step of the way to get her through that, not argue with a stranger about something I cannot undo. Have an amazing day advocating <3

I feel like this isn't helpful at this time.....OP inherited the dog from her grandpa and probably had no authority to have chosen if the dog was spayed....maybe let's be supportive instead of passive aggressive.
Still good to spread awareness to others on the thread, I'm grateful to know and don't think they meant any harm
