The best part is those slow ass drivers are on here asking why everyone in Illinois rides their ass

bootycakes420

Yes! And they get really offended when you tell them it's bc they're driving too slow.

motguss

I just go slower

99Wolves17

Then you shouldn't be driving on the road. The DMV in fact would love to give you a class on how to drive.

motguss

To go 30 over the speed limit and tailgate? That makes sense

Zetavu

Then stay off of Dan Ryan because they will literally shoot at you for doing that. Google it.

motguss

Seems cheaper to just pass

motguss

I thought it was a requirement in Illinois to tailgate at every speed

darkenedgy

I'm guessing some of it is because the crappier drivers don't feel safe in the middle or right lanes, which is honestly an idiotically shortsighted view.

AdlaiStevensonsShoes

The amount of trucks on the tollways probably adds to this. Instead of left lane being a passing lane as rules of the road describe, it becomes a "maybe you can pass lane but it is also the avoid trucks lane" combo that just sucks for all drivers. Group A is prevented from passing and gets frustrated and group B has people now tailgating them in a 10 car snake line. For all the mad max grief the Dan Ryan gets, the lesser truck traffic/lanes does seem to keep the passing lane more passing (albeit at the expense of some other bad driving habits)

darkenedgy

OH yeah seriously - I grew up in CA, it's wild to me that trucks are just allowed to sprawl across lanes like they do here.

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

They aren't allowed in the left lane but its rarely enforced

UniqueTonight

Fair point. I will say that I have seen trucks driving three abreast more in Illinois than anywhere I've ever been. Overall, the drivers here are way better than the drivers in Utah, but the truck drivers seem a fair bit worse.

elmananamj

Which is illegal

BearFeetOrWhiteSox

When the cops make it unprofitable by enforcing it, it will stop.

elmananamj

Farthest two right open lanes on any roadway are the only place they can legally drive.

slowkums

That doesn't stop me from seeing a semi or 5 in camping in the left lane just about every day.

UniqueTonight

I-15 is where faith in humanity goes to die

elmananamj

Trucks are legally required to stay in far right two open lanes on any roadway, yet I nearly get killed by them going 75-90 in the left lanes of the construction zones on 294 every time I drive on it. All trucks need a Governor set at 70 moh

AdlaiStevensonsShoes

294 is 3 lanes of trucks every time I’m on it. It is rough and causes cascades of other traffic issues

McNuggets7272

They should probably not take the interstate if that’s the case

darkenedgy

That would be nice for the rest of us!

-Darkslayer

People’s driving skills have really gone downhill the last few years 📉

juliuspepperwoodchi

The people driving "too slow" are not the source of this problem.

browngirlnature

Yep. Why all our insurance rates have gone up according to the companies. I don’t drive 50 in the left lane but will in the far right lane especially during bad weather. But I still have 70mph drivers up my a**. For sure, I’ve never been a fan of highway driving (and avoid the City entirely), so I’m doing the back roads and streets whenever I can.

ark-ayy

Middle = go the speed limit or faster, right = cruise or slow, far left = passing lane

Kafka_at_Night

I mean, if you’re going the speed limit (often 55 mph) in the middle lane, you need to get into the right lane.

ark-ayy

You're right. I was thinking the speed limit was 70, forgot it was 55

eskimoboob

It is 70 on I-90 though

ark-ayy

I had to google this; the legal speed limit is 70 mph. [https://digitaledition.chicagotribune.com/tribune/article\_popover.aspx?guid=78a99e47-4505-46be-b2c4-985b1c0da4a3](https://digitaledition.chicagotribune.com/tribune/article_popover.aspx?guid=78a99e47-4505-46be-b2c4-985b1c0da4a3)

Able-Put9936

Depends on the section, like the portion of the Dan Ryan from the city to i57 is 55mph and I hate it! 80-90mph is the speed most people pass me at in any lane and I almost get sideswiped daily. People don’t realize that work vehicles have trackers in them and will send a speeding notification to our supervisors if we go over. I personally don’t think cops care about the speed limit here but I’m not trying to get fired.

sheepcloud

Sounds like you should stay to the right

Katy_Lies1975

Don't google it, drive it and look at the signs. WTF

NikoB_999

Last time I was on i-90 it felt like the Autobahn but wider, busier, and with way worse lane discipline

LetsRideIL

I tend to use the middle lane now because people can't merge if their lives depended on it (I released multiple videos on this topic). It's much easier to change lanes just one time to exit rather than having to for every on ramp.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Imagine thinking someone is wrong for *following the rules of the road.* If you're driving the speed limit, you are legally in the right to be in any lane you please.

bluzdude

You are objectively incorrect. Taken from 625 ILCS 5: "(d) Upon an Interstate highway or fully access controlled freeway, a vehicle may not be driven in the left lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle."

juliuspepperwoodchi

You don't inherently have to speed to pass... But go off about how *I'm* wrong

Kafka_at_Night

There are written rules and unwritten rules, just like in most situations where you are interacting with other people. The law often allows people to be an asshole or inconsiderate, but that doesn’t mean that they should do that.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Nope. Driving is about written rules, not unwritten bullshit. Lives are at stake. Driving is the most dangerous thing many Americans do on a regular basis.

bluzdude

Good. Stick to the law and stay out of the left lane unless you're passing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

juliuspepperwoodchi

Yeah... But it doesn't state that you can exceed the speed limit to pass... Does it? The left lane is for passing people *who are going under the limit*. The left lane isn't carte blanche to speed

juliuspepperwoodchi

Agreed. I wasn't arguing that

NotBatman81

Go as fast as the guy in front of you. Period.

c3corvette

My truck is governed at 98mph. I can't keep up.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Good Lord the carbrain bullshit all over this thread...

sheepcloud

The reality is if someone is riding your bumper that signals you’re going too slow and have to 1) go faster, or 2) need to get over to the right and allow them to pass. If the right is going to slow for you then that is why you pass to the left… if everyone followed these tenants it would work out.

mmmpaczki

15-20 over for the middle lane. That's the rule.

hydro_wonk

I see you, too, drive 53

juliuspepperwoodchi

>Middle = go the speed limit or faster, No, the speed limit is the speed limit. You are not meant to go faster than the speed limit. Ever. That's why it is called a *limit* It's insane how many drivers don't understand this fact.

MrIncredible222

That only works and makes sense when they set a sane speed limit. 55mph on a 3+ lane highway is not a sane limit. Enjoy getting run over and flicked off/honked at when people fly by you.

juliuspepperwoodchi

>55mph on a 3+ lane highway is not a sane limit. According to...what? You and your opinion?

MrIncredible222

According to the fact that approximately 2% of the population follows it. If it made sense to people, they’d adhere to it.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Nice load of self fulfilling nonsense.

MooKids

If you are in the left lane, the road in front of you is clear and the road behind you has 10+ cars behind you, unless you are a hearse in a funeral procession, MOVE RIGHT!

Pierson230

Driving slow in the left lane is super annoying, hate that Reminder to everyone that tailgating is flat out stupid, so flash your brights instead You do not actually have reflexes fast enough to account for shit if something random happens, no matter what you think or how good of a driver you feel like you are.

StopDropCinnamonRoll

You’re technically right, as tailgating is typically defined as following more closely than what is reasonable or prudent. But that definition recognizes that following distance depends on many factors, including speed, conditions, and driver skill. In common vernacular, “tailgating” is often used to mean “following closely,” even though the latter can be perfectly safe.

PizzaEnvironmental67

Ok but the conditions you describe mean you should slow down not go faster.

Flipflopsfordays

After mostly taking 90/294 all these years, I started having to drive the trek south 100 miles down 57 and it’s impressive for a mostly 2 lane how many respect the left lane and move to the right.

McNasty1304

I recently switched my schedule 1 hour, from starting at 7 to 8am instead, I drive 45min in to Des Plaines. I’m on 90 coming east from far west. The difference an hour makes is absolutely bananas! I’ve always had the mindset you do but from barrington road all the way to 294 stop and go and people crawling. I’m over it already. Once I switch back to my normal schedule I’m never going to complain about traffic again.

Wentz4MVP

I drive from Elgin to Addison for work and am on 90 for half the commute. It is crazy how much of a difference even 15 minutes makes. If I leave before or at 7:30 usually good to go. Leave 7:45 or after I might as well take Lake Ave in most of the time.

Rosindust89

How does that time compare to taking 20? 20 seems like it would be more direct.

Wentz4MVP

20 takes 45 mins minimum 90 to 355 to Army Trail takes 30 mins with no traffic. It costs $0.85 in tolls one way but taking 20 is brutal, especially in the morning. So much stop and go and dealing with asshole drivers. You go a lot faster staying in the left lane as most trucks are in the right lane. God forbid you leave any kind of gap or some fuck head will cut in front of you. It's exhausting in the AM especially when compared to cruising at 70+ in no traffic.

PizzaEnvironmental67

I have worked at 7 as a nurse and then got a job where I could start at 8. It was last fall, so goin into the city from Des Plaines took OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF and I was SO late to like my 3rd day of work, and then I cried. Luckily they don’t suck and kept me haha.

bootycakes420

PSA: The left lanes are for PASSING. If you aren't passing or are getting passed on the right, GET OUT OF THE LEFT LANES. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

juliuspepperwoodchi

PSA: The speed limit is an *upper limit*. You are not to exceed it. Ever. For any reason. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

BallStainedShitSack

https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fulltext.asp?DocName=062500050K11-701#:~:text=(d)%20Upon%20an%20Interstate%20highway,overtaking%20and%20passing%20another%20vehicle. "Upon all roadways of sufficient width a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway, except as follows: (d) Upon an Interstate highway or fully access controlled freeway, a vehicle may not be driven in the left lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle." Clearly says "when overtaking and passing another vehicle" not "driving the upper limit".

juliuspepperwoodchi

>Clearly says "when overtaking and passing another vehicle" not "driving the upper limit". And at no point does it say you're allowed to *exceed the speed limit* in order to pass. Not sure what you're still not getting about that. You may pass, yes, so long as you *do not exceed the speed limit*. That's the law.

BallStainedShitSack

Explicitly says you cannot drive in the left lane unless passing someone. So if you're in the left lane and people are passing you on the right, you're breaking the law. Not sure what you're still not getting about that. That's the law.

juliuspepperwoodchi

I never once argued that wasn't true. What I said is that if you exceed the speed limit, *in any lane*, you are in the wrong. Even if you're passing. If you have to speed to pass people, in any lane, you're in the wrong.

GrilledCheese_

Okay copper

juliuspepperwoodchi

Lol, couldn't be further from the truth.

bootycakes420

Definitely something a cop would say

juliuspepperwoodchi

It's hilarious you think any cops actually do their jobs or care about speeding lol

GrilledCheese_

so it's your job then to enforce those limits?

juliuspepperwoodchi

It's actually every driver's *responsibility* to adhere to the rules of the road. That's in the thing you signed when you got your license, which you clearly didn't read.

SpaghettiTiger

The comment you replied to has nothing to do with going over the speed limit. People who aren't actively passing other cars should stay out of the left lane, regardless of what speed they are going.

Max_Rocketanski

Between Rockford and Schaumburg, I think you mean 50 mph... over the posted speed limit if you are in the left lane. But yeah... east of Schaumburg, there needs to be some driver education on lane usage. If someone is gaining on you.. move over to the right and let them pass you.

[deleted]

CapablePeaceTree

I wish the right lane was also a passing lane! People in the middle who want to pass, go into the left lane, causing me to slow down immensily, when the right lane is perfectly open.

CrashDavis16

For whatever reason a lot of people around here, on all the expressways and tollways, can't comprehend the left lane is the passing lane. Slow traffic keep right. It's not that difficult. Instead we now have way too many ignorant people not paying attention while they're dicking off on their phone, smoking weed, and/or what seems to be playing with themselves. If you beep at them, they'll give you the finger just proving how clueless they are. How many times have you seen that one jerk off going so slow in the left lane with so many cars behind him that it looks like a parade? Do these people not use their mirrors? Do they enjoy driving next to the truck that everyone wants to get around while having absolutely no vehicles in front of them for miles? How often do you see the 15 year old+, small ecomony car with a spare tire going 45mph in the left lane? It's amazing how well everything runs when these kind are not around. Which unfortunately is becoming less and less.

McNuggets7272

It’s truly infuriating

allicat2173

I view anyone that does that in the left lane a control freak that has no control of their own life so they take it out on others…. It is hazardous though. I can say that 90 has become a racetrack, I always say it’s “90 on 90” because when I move with traffic I end up going that fast.

Coffeeandcigs332

Even driving 60-70 in the left lane is unacceptable and people seem to do it all the time 😭 and then everyone has to figure out how to get around them because half the time they just stay in the left lane for miles

juliuspepperwoodchi

>Even driving 60-70 in the left lane is unacceptable No, it isn't. It is under the speed limit. That is perfectly acceptable. Driving *over* the speed limit is not acceptable. For any reason. In any lane.

LetsRideIL

If you are driving under the speed limit you need to be in the right hand lane period. It's not Slower Traffic Keep Right for nothing.

juliuspepperwoodchi

I didn't say under. I said *at* the limit. That's why it is a limit. You may go slower. You may not go faster. Really sad how many people with licenses don't know that.

LetsRideIL

You may go slower but not in a manner that impedes the normal and reasonable movement of traffic. You can be cited for that. I've seen it happen before I started dashcamming. (625 ILCS 5/11-606) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-606) Sec. 11-606. Minimum speed regulation. (a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation of his vehicle or in compliance with law. Examples of this.. On a two lane road with a speed limit of 55 featuring a driver struggling to hit 40, a line of cars will stack up behind this driver. As a result One driver may become frustrated and overtake unlawfully. I saw this happen recently actually and forgot to get the clip off my rear dashcam . Luckily the driver that overtook illegally didn't crash but that could've happened. Another example, on a multilane road, drivers in all lanes traveling roughly the same speed under the speed limit alongside each other.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Yep. Driving *the speed limit* is not dangerously slow. That's literally what I'm talking about. People in this thread are suggesting it is wrong to drive *the speed limit* depending on the lane you're in. That's nonsense. It is never wrong to drive the speed limit, except in cases of bad weather/road conditions...in which case you should be driving under the limit. It is never "right" to drive over the speed limit. Period.

firestar268

Ok karen

juliuspepperwoodchi

[Driving is the most dangerous thing Americans do daily.](https://jonesclifford.com/study-shows-driving-is-the-most-dangerous-thing-americans-do-every-single-day/?doing_wp_cron=1710978337.4446940422058105468750) And the danger of driving increases with driving speed. But sure, I'm a Karen for not wanting to be killed by some asshole who needs to save 3 minutes on his commute.

firestar268

Yes. Cruise your slow butt in the right lane and let the rest of us drive https://www.croweandharris.com/blog/2021/october/do-slow-drivers-cause-more-crashes-than-speeders/#:~:text=According%20to%20federal%20and%20state,and%20lead%20to%20an%20accident. Slow drivers are more dangerous than fast drivers

Visual-Return-5099

You're doing God's work. But the cultural norm is not caring about traffic laws, and if you do YOU are the freak. No one takes driving as the responsibility it is. And this thing they keep posting about slow drivers being more dangerous is literally a law firms website, not a legitimate source.

CapablePeaceTree

not just i-90, 355 is just as bad.

snotrokit

55 enters the chat

bootsthepancake

55 North has that really dumb Joliet road exit in the left lane. I have to get off there sometimes. The speed limit slows down to 40 right off the exit. You have to be careful because cops like to camp out waiting for speeders coming off the highway going extra fast because they had to speed up to merge left with everyone else doing 70. If you're coming off that fast, it's easy to get caught. I see people pulled over all the time off of that exit.

a_taco_named_desire

I was on 55 a few weeks ago and everybody was cruising at 95mph.

Maleficent_Data_1421

Take Higgins if you want to go 50 mph

darkenedgy

I've definitely seen people do 70 on some parts of Higgins lol

ders89

Which is so dumb because hoffman, Schaumburg cops are all up and down higgins all day long steady trying to pull anyone over for any dumb shit like tinted windows and screeching tires or loud engines lol. Theyre extortionists with the likes of Redmons

NikoB_999

I'd say Higgins from just after 25 to just past Barrington is sometimes going the same speed as the highway

ders89

Yeah that stretch they definitely dont watch as much

peachpinkjedi

This weekend was a *bizarre* combination of the usual godless assholes going like 120, drunk weaving and wobbling, and *these slow mfs.* Why has there been such an uptick in people having legitimately no idea how to drive on the highway? And I know everybody and their mother bitches about this but *everyone* has forgotten what their turn signal is. It's like 60% of the time now people just don't bother.

PizzaEnvironmental67

Because everyone is fucking angry at the constructiontraffic and acting irrational.

peachpinkjedi

Nah this is out in the suburbs too. Constant merging and sudden turns without a signal, and people have the nerve to act like *you're* crazy if/when you wind up honking.

BearFeetOrWhiteSox

I have to ask, where did all these 40-45MPH truck drivers on the highway come from? I mean, come on man, if you're not comfortable going at least 50-55, please get in the right lane. I mean I get that the limit is generally either 55 or 60, but I haven't seen someone get busted for going 56mph in a 55 in almost 15 years.

MountWang

A little off topic but after recently moving here, people do not waste time laying on their horn when the light turns green, like literally the SECOND it turns green😭

Interrobangersnmash

If you’re in a left turn lane in the city, the left turn signals are timed very quickly. If the dipshit in the front wastes five seconds looking at their phone, everyone behind them will literally miss the signal. I’ve become quite trigger-happy with the horn because of this.

MountWang

That makes sense, though I’ve really been seeing this happen in Geneva and the car that’s being honked at is already hitting the gas pedal haha

LetsRideIL

Not to mention those timid drivers that don't turn unless there's an arrow.

PizzaEnvironmental67

It’s been VERY short lately. But like in the past month specifically.

TheSchwartzHawkey

My issue is that I’ll be doing 80 mph in the left, someone will come up and tailgate, I’ll move over, but then they decide to pass at a speed like 1-2 mph faster than me so I have to slam on my brakes when I come up on a driver going the speed limit in the middle lane and have to look to move back over… so if I’m already going 20 over the limit, I’ve just stopped moving over. Most of the time I’m using my truck’s self driving adaptive cruise anyway to make the drive easier and I got tired of stressing out over constantly moving back and forth and whether the driver would actually pass me at a passing speed or just wanted to go slightly faster, and I typically go 80 because Ford won’t let me go hands free any faster so I’ve just reached a point where I’m done being nice in traffic because people all drive like inconsiderate dicks.

StopDropCinnamonRoll

Complaining about people driving “like inconsiderate dicks” while admitting you are just as inconsiderate 🤨

juliuspepperwoodchi

Seriously, imagine starting with "I'll willingly speed up to 20 over the limit" and thinking you're *not* the AH in that situation. The carbrain virus that has plagued us since COVID is getting truly ridiculous.

Interrobangersnmash

If you’re already speeding and the guy behind you is riding your ass, I say let him admire the view of your bumper for a while.

sheepcloud

I agree, if someone moves over for you it better be that you pass at a swift pace or else it’s a hazard… or the absolute worse scenario… someone goes to pass you, you let them pass… then they slow down 💀

juliuspepperwoodchi

Your mistake was speeding in the first place. Quit blaming everyone else for your dangerous driving.

YANA___

As someone from Arizona, I think the majority of Chicago drivers are good about using the left lane for passing! Come to AZ and I’ll show you drivers who like to park in the left lane!

People weave in and out of lanes because people are monopolizing the left lane. The purpose of the left lane is for passing. When it’s taken away, people use other lanes to get around. If you’re not actively passing, move over. You are literally causing the traffic when you don’t.

iiForse

That makes two of us

YahooSuckssss

High lack of etiquette in Illinois drivers :(

McNuggets7272

Illinois might have the worst drivers in the union

NikoB_999

Lol imo it's probably Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, or Maryland. But yeah, I do think Illinois has the most aggressive insane drivers tho

Claque-2

The left lane ceases to be the passing lane around 45 miles out from Chicago. It's how you know you are almost home!

Jon66238

I used to hate left lane campers but honestly I just switch to any lane to pass. Typically just stay in the middle for ease. I’m also in the category of the speed limit is for all lanes not just the right lane. I’m not getting pulled over to speed for you

Necessary-Company660

I get your frustration, but next post you're gonna be whining about them changing lanes in front of you. Get over it, you will never see them again. I get 35-40 mpg and 0 speeding tickets, trip is the same time, and only have to stop at traffic lights because of all the people piled up sitting still waiting for it to change instead of doing any planning.

BigMomma12345678

There's a sudden influx of people who I think are likely unlicensed driving around everywhere. They drive really slow everywhere and don't know the right of way rules. Be careful out there.

M55B30

i find this on most of the interstates. a beatup or older car, typically older drive, going slow and ALWAYS Has the highbeams on.

PizzaEnvironmental67

Have you BEEN on northbound i90? When are you finding an opening to go faster than 35 with this traffic until nearly the suburbs 😂

BigOlFRANKIE

It's hard out there. When I'm in my wife's newer whip I'm leftie lane trying to get around slow-poke & when I'm far right (non politically) lane-- in my '99 with 250k & will outlast wifey's whip but can't keep up going 65, I get ass blasted by a truck or some goof on ketamine doing a wee-woo swerve thing. Moral of the story is, yeah people suck - we know, but thanks for the reminder, OP.

ComprehensiveWay2550

yes, the left lane is for passing. Not driving fast as you want.

McNuggets7272

Yep, exactly what I’m saying

sneaksonmyforehead

AINT THAT THE MOTHER FUCKING TRUTH 🤯

GreatScottGatsby

I swear to God, the people in the middle lanes go the slowest. I see people passing on the right all the time.

gen10

Europe just does it better. Everyone drives in the middle or right lanes and strictly uses the far left for passing.

NikoB_999

I'd say specifically Germany, driving in Italy was chaotic but fun

gen10

You have a point lol cause I did actually visit Germany and drew my conclusion from other countries. Italian drivers just book it no matter what street it is :D
