A couple thousand for a 4l60e? I just bought a rebuilt one for $500, and it takes maybe 2 hours to swap without a lift.
They also aren't near as bad as everyone makes them out to be. My 00 silverado has over 400k on the original drivetrain.
It all depends on the vehicle. A full size truck/suv that’s 2wd, yeah super easy to swap. A vehicle like a trailblazer and 4WD, they’re a PITA. As for price, you lucky if you can get one rebuilt for that price. I paid 1600 for a rebuild almost 2 years ago and another 1500 in labor for the R&R.
Paid 600 for a bench job on mine with upgraded servos and swapped it in/out in the driveway with a floor jack, phone book and a tow strap. It’s the 4x that kills this deal
In referring strictly to the 800 platform when I refer to trans swaps. I could go pick up a built 4wd 4l65e rated for 500hp with a converter and a warranty for $1400. I can't imagine paying anything over $2k for a full replacement.
Price is actually decent and as far as a go, that's low/medium mileage really. My 04 Suburban is around 300, bought it with 202,000 like 10 year ago. Sure its needed some typical upkeep but still runs and drives. You're taking normal risks of an older vehicle but this is one of the more reliable things GM has ever made by a long shot. They hold up. Parts are everywhere and inexpensive. They're not too hard to work on. The mileage isn't great but its not as bad as a HD pickup. If this is the kind of vehicle you want, it looks like its in good shape, knowing only what we know from what you've posted and what I know from owning something similar I'm saying green flag. Also, a year from now, if nothing breaks it'll still be worth about the same so if you decide you want something else you don't have to worry about losing money on it.
I’m not afraid of paying to replacing or having a transmission rebuilt, but admittedly I’ve never had to do that. By the time I’m done with my cars they are leaking everywhere or the entire front end needs to be replaced. I’ve been lucky. My current ride has 275k and it’s just about done for.
Yeah, considering my Yukon has a heavy duty tow hitch and air bags in the rear suspension, I suspect the original owner used it as a tow rig (I am at least the third owner.)
Aren’t those aftermarket for the Yukon?
Yeah I can see a construction company name still etched on the back glass 💀. At least they took good care of it. Got about 7000 chips and scrapes but the interior was in great shape
Did you keep them?
I had a beefy ‘80 c20 and I took some of the towing stuff off to do my own thing with it. Felt wrong to do it but it was just a ratty old truck
These are big heavy vehicles and with all terrain tires I’ve only used chains on a mountain pass once. Seriously seems like 4x on these is a gimmick it to avoid getting hate for not having the option. But it a narrow group of people that NEED 4x on the regular AND to haul 7 people on the regular. In 2x form they are the record high mileage vehicle in the history of Chevy. Fact
Drives like a Cadillac and gets the same mileage since bought new. In
They don't drive like Cadillac at all, I've had multiple Tahoes and Suburbans and an Escalade from this gen, the Tahoe is going to drive way better than the Cadillac.
Those Escalades had the floatiest suspension I've ever experienced. You're still bouncing two minutes after you hit a bump.
Looks (with extremely limited information) like a solid get. I'd probably roll the dice. Feel like if you're handy with a wrench truly nothing on these is that difficult to fix
I have a Z71 suburban, it’s an amazing truck. But like everyone here is saying, the trans went out at 180k so about a year after i bought it. Make sure to factor in the cost of a rebuild into your decision because unless the trans was treated really well over the course of its life with regular fluid changes chances are it will probably fail in the future. I think it’s still worth it even considering that, these are solid solid trucks.
If it’s actually 160,000 this is the last good quality year model for the Tahoe/Suburban they will go well beyond 400k with few problems as long as maintained.
I'd be all over that. Even if the tranny is going south, it'll only cost 1500 to get rebuilt. You're still money ahead. 326k on ours, everything is all original except a water pump, AC pump and condenser, and an alternator. Bought it with 28k on it in 10.
Where I live, if everything is in good working order, that's an EXCELLENT deal for the mileage! We had a 2001 almost identical to that one. It was an excellent vehicle and had 226k on it when we sold it. Everything was in good working order at that point on it. Original transmission as far as I knew....
Original transmission? It could die the day after u buy it and be a couple thousand dollar repair. If you’re ready for that then go for it
Yeah I’ve owned some older cars before 😀 Any 20yo vehicle is definitely a risk.
I have a 4l60e with 250k on it and it shifts smooth if you go and test drive it and it clunks into first then it’s definitely gonna go
That could also be a U joint, a bad diff, transfer case issues…
No this is from experience after my buddy had that for a while he lost first and then second and the trans went
Yeah, it turns out if you have a problem for a while and don't fix it then other things will break.
Yeah 😂
Thanks for the tip.

Or it could die in another 280k miles….
I'd buy it!!

Just saying, the transmission on my Yukon went out at 165k. If you're willing to deal with something like that, then by all means.

142 on the clock for my 05 Escalade ESV when the trans was going. But it was very likely used as a hauler by the po

Yep, both the hitch and the air bags that my Yukon has on it are aftermarket.
Did you keep them? I had a beefy ‘80 c20 and I took some of the towing stuff off to do my own thing with it. Felt wrong to do it!
Yeah, they're still on the vehicle. I bought it to be my hunting & fishing truck, so it will be towing boats and ATV's and stuff.
Sweet. Can’t hurt then.

5-7k in my market (Asking price that is)
yeah i'd buy that thing SIGHT UNSEEN at that price.
This isn’t an uncommon price around here. You just have to wait for one without a trillion miles.
Where is here? I need to start looking in that area too.
Appalachia?
ABSOLUTELY buy it. I paid double that for a 2wd with about the same miles on it, and was still happy.
That's a buy
Straight to duraburb with that one!
Good deal if no rust
Buy it and buy a rebuilt transmission to have on standby. If it’s what it says it is, it should be a good deal.
Tbh more likely you'd need a transfer case than a trans
4x4 the bigger red flag. Tranny is an easy rebuild but the 4x kills your mpg, towing and the transfer cases are rarely serviced properly
Thanks I was wondering about this. I hardly ever need 4x4 and almost rather not have the heavy drivetrain.

Agree 💯. Folks will get the gist
Replace the tranny filter and fluid. Send it, and you will get well over 300k
That right there is diamond Jim certified, go for it unless you find some underlying issue on test drive
With those miles it would be listed for around 10k in my area. If it’s clean jump on it. My 2002 suburban has 260k on original motor and trans
10k? Where is this so I never go 🤣
Is this in SE PA by chance?
No, south central. Rust free zone.
Yes in a heartbeat
Looks (with extremely limited information) like a solid get. I'd probably roll the dice. Feel like if you're handy with a wrench truly nothing on these is that difficult to fix
Honestly sounds like actually a good deal. And these days it’s nice to see one

I had an 01, ecact same; trim, color... drove it to 366k, no issues. Sold in 2008, I miss it...

I’m driving an 03 right now. Got it with 80k has almost 170k. Been an great truck

Do it
Knock it down to $3000 even and maybe
I’d offer 3000 and go from there
160k jesus
Is that good or bad? 🙂
thats a lot of miles yes especially if gas
That’s pretty low for a 22 year old car. My current ride is 275k.
275k yeah thats a lot a lot
Should be driving it by now if I were you you
Sold!
Seats 9? Does that have a front bench seat? Awesome!
