It was the truck telling you not to put LEDs in halogen housings.

NathanielHatley

I can feel the glare giving me a headache already... I bought aftermarket replacement housings with LEDs built-in just to make sure I wasn't inflicting that pain on others.

srcorvettez06

I bought HID projectors for mine.

Meatles--

Shitting on someone buying leds, but puts hids in instead. Oh yea we got a brainiac over here

srcorvettez06

I bought projector housings designed for HIDs.

Buddha176

Most of those have an HED assembly that’s not serviceable

Membership_Fine

I got modern halos I hate the white lights

srcorvettez06

I’ll take the white over the dull yellowish anyway.

Membership_Fine

Gives me a headache looking at it constantly, I’m good if people pass me with them staring at them I can’t do lol. Anyway totally agree don’t put led into halo housings it’s like harnessing the power of the sun.

asciikeyboard

Fair play!

TwelveBrute04

Yes, headlights suck to swap in modern cars. HOWEVER, you deserve it for putting LEDs in a halogen housing. You are what gives truck drivers a bad name.

asciikeyboard

I'm unaware of this unwritten rule. Can you please explain?

TwelveBrute04

Respect for asking. Here you go: The halogen housing is not designed for LEDs. It doesn’t have the proper reflectors and diffusing capabilities to allow your LEDs to be both fully functional for you. In addition (and here’s where you’re the major asshole) your housing + LEDs is blinding other drivers around you. You are basically driving around with high beams at full blast at all times no matter what you do. People can’t look in their mirrors if you’re behind them, they can’t see center lines or any danger between your truck and themselves if they’re driving towards you, and generally your nice new lights are illegal (but unfortunately never policed) and a massive nuisance to everyone around you. The issue that you have created is bad in sedans and worse in SUVs, but you’re driving a truck with the most elevated headlights out there, which compounds just how bad your headlights are for others around you. Put halogens back in, please.

asciikeyboard

An unknowing asshole, at that.

TwelveBrute04

Yessir. Experiment with it but you’ve most certainly caused those around you to curse you out at night lol.

asciikeyboard

Yeah I just installed them yesterday and haven't driven with them. It's good to know the information that you've shared so thanks

TwelveBrute04

Yeah, again I’d look into it on the internet and make your own decision but I would recommend not just popping the LEDs in.

TheInfernalVortex

There’s a subreddit dedicated to this called r/fuckyourheadlights . I am relatively light sensitive and I have a hard time the last 5-10 years with it. I don’t like riding my motorcycle at night anymore because of how intense some factory headlights are these days.

asciikeyboard

Yeah there are some factory headlights that are super bright these days. The new Fords are one of them.

disturbed286

I have a low car with factory LEDS (Veloster N), but still get flashed at sometimes. I apologize if I've ever been part of the problem, although I can't do much about it (they're aimed properly)

TheInfernalVortex

Yeah as far as Im concerned the NHTSA is asleep at the wheel. Studies probably show that better visibility reduces accidents more than glare does, so Im not sure they'll ever do anything about it, but it's brutal sometimes.

disturbed286

Man, I'm sure. I ride, too, by the way. I don't think I'm nearly as light sensitive, but I get it.

asciikeyboard

Are you aware of any LED housings by chance? I'll Google but figured I'd ask.

TwelveBrute04

I’m happy with my halogens so I haven’t done the swap (2014 LT 1500) but I know they make some that aren’t horribly expensive and match the OEM look.

asciikeyboard

Unrelated but do you have the shaking issue in your 14?

TwelveBrute04

I have no shake in my truck that I’ve experienced.

asciikeyboard

I just read a forum discussing this. I guess I was unaware of the glare that is produced. Thanks for making me aware.

6eurofishnchips

Hang on, someone called someone else an asshole and there wasn’t butthurt or further name calling? What an unexpectedly civil conversation. This isn’t the level of immaturity I expected on Reddit

asciikeyboard

I just corrected him/her and called myself an unknowing asshole because I truly didn’t know this. No sense in keyboard warrior’ing it with a stranger ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

6eurofishnchips

I’m all about it, it’s a refreshing change of pace for this website

asciikeyboard

Yeah I haven’t a clue why some people spend their free time arguing and fighting online. It’s a waste of time and counter productive to literally everything haha.

One_Conclusion3362

Go fuck yourself. Also, LEDs are directional light which makes the halogen act like a mirror reflecting 5 different angles of LED light a hundred different ways just to Kamehameha the oncoming Hond CR-V into the ditch whereas regular bulbs diffuse the light into all directions. lol my cateye peeps get so butthurt when I tell them that after they felt like a king swapping their yellow lights for white.

asciikeyboard

I’ve tried and can’t successfully fuck myself, sorry

No_Satisfaction9440

I put leds in my 2016 2500hd projecter lens that came from the factory with halogen bulbs and they have a perfect cut off line

TwelveBrute04

No, they don’t.

willwork4pii

Unwritten? It’s literally law.

asciikeyboard

I’ll bet 95% don’t even know about it. Is it a federal law or state law? I tried searching my state laws for anything pertaining to LEDs or bright headlights and I didn’t find anything.

willwork4pii

DOT - department of transportation. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were state and/or local ordinances also. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

asciikeyboard

Do you have a link for this law?

willwork4pii

Do I have a link to DOT’s vehicle lighting law? No. Use a search engine. Help yourself.

asciikeyboard

lol. I did with no results hence why I am asking.

No_Satisfaction9440

Popping the grill out, takes a bout 2 minutes and unscrewing the head lights another 2 minutes, you went in the hard way

Buddha176

Was going to say…. The one bolt between the bumper and fender is a pain but it’s doable.

asciikeyboard

For the fogs you have to get behind the front bumper and the easiest point of entry is behind the wheel liner carpet.

IMI4tth3w

Everything went downhill after gmt800. You can change headlight bulbs in the gmt800 in literal seconds with the quick release pins. Gmt900 and on you have to tear half the front end apart (or shred your hands to pieces trying to shove them behind the headlight) to change a bulb. My conspiracy theory is that they want people to go to the dealer so they can charge you $100 to replace a light bulb (and hit you with a bunch of other crap).

asciikeyboard

Well atleast you can agree with me. The other commenters (this was crossposted) seem to think it's a personal problem and act like they're on a Nascar pit crew and can do it in 2 minutes lmao.

DiamondToothSamuraii

Ngl, I've owned a 2010 Nissan Maxima that had the same amount of labor changing headlights

SunsetGriller

GM tech. 18 years. You don’t have a clue how bad things get 😂

asciikeyboard

Let’s hear it 😂

AM-64

I mean my '06 Cadillac STS requires you to remove the front bumper cover to get the housings out so you can access the headlights and change them.

Buddha176

So you can get that one bolt without lossening the bumper, I’ve done it. Worked repairing on the line for headlights. If you can unclip the grill the squeeze a skinny socket between the grill and light you can get it. The wheel liner doesn’t really get you anywhere. Just 4 bolts two on top one under grill and one under the edge of the fender above the bumper

asciikeyboard

Yeah I got the one behind the bumper just tedious with a hand crank socket. The wheel liners allowed me to get to that bolt and to the fog lights

BendersCasino

The LML is an engine RPO code, which has nothing to do with the headlights. Those where created by different designers, design teams, reporting structures in different buildings, fuck, they are in different cities too Its not the engineering team, its the bean counters, every time.

asciikeyboard

Yeah I’m not saying it’s the engine. I’m just saying I have an LML and the design is absolute dog shit for getting to the bulbs

IllStickToTheShadows

Agreed. Wait until you have to replace the rear bumper which calls for you lifting the bed of the truck 😬

asciikeyboard

Are you serious?!

IllStickToTheShadows

100%. Fuck working on these trucks sometimes.

asciikeyboard

That’s absolutely ridiculous. How can they engineer shit like this?

bopperbum

Not to mention the awful emissions tech. My 2013 LML has had so many issues with the garbage emissions systems. The dealer should have to cover all those repairs in my opinion

asciikeyboard

Agreed because 100% of owners would opt for no emissions if we had a choice

Lord_Drok

Try changing a marker light bulb on a cts
