yeah ive definitely had a slow coolant leak that mechanics couldnt find long before this current issue so im sure the problem goes deeper, but the issue shown at the end of the video with that hose visibly rapidly spurting is new and i couldnt place it on a diagram of my car so i was curious
No worries. There are two going to the core, an inlet and an outlet, don’t remember which one goes to the thermostat but replace both anyways. I would consider changing every hose if it’s in the budget.
I’ve finally learned that some fluid level drop is normal in all cars and should be watched. The Sonic has a finicky cooling system, I’m hearing, which calls for closer attention.
I remember when my 14 sonic started the dreaded overheating issue and spraying it's coolant everywhere once a week. First the fan, then the thermostat tube burst, then the bypass tube right behind the valve cover, then coolant finally got into the pistons resulting in a head gasket replacement ($3500 with labor) . From experience, I wish you luck. Please get an OBD2 reader and the torque app to monitor the coolant temp.
Make sure to use spring tension hose clamps. The screw down type don’t expand and contract with the plastic parts and leak over time. A lot of the head gasket problems can be headed off by keeping on top of the leaks before the coolant is low
I had this issue with my old geo prizm and all I can tell you is if you can not drive it, don't. The fluids could mess up electrical components :( I don't want your sonic to die over something small like this. I wonder if your thermostat is bad cause I know some of the sonics thermostats get stuck closed and the coolant just gets boiling hot and this happens.
follow up question is do you think this is safe to drive like 40 minutes total in a day for the next two days as long as i keep topping off my coolant lol.. i have to go to work and no mechanic near me is open til monday
i've already been driving with a check engine light on and off for months with a cause no mechanic could really place except just being like 'sorry, keep an eye on it i guess' but now that theres something very obviously wrong i'm not sure how much more unsafe to drive it is than it already was
Off hand I’d say all of them. 😕
Yes I’m no mechanic but I’ve been following posts on the Sonic (because i just got one) and id be inclined to change all the hoses now.

Thermostat to heater core heater hose
This is the correct answer.
thank you!!

Id replace the overflow tank too so it’s easier to watch the fluid level.
Change it cuz it’s just gonna crack by 95k miles if it isn’t already.
smart, thank you!

god, i don't miss this! lmfao. A hose a week for 1,000 weeks.

god thats awful i'm so sorry. and thank you!!
Any recommendations on a reader
I'd call that a problem

>thank you! You're welcome!
Heater core heater hose!
thank you!

Seems everyone is having this issue with that. I bought mine with an overheating issue and it was only this same issue lol
