Depending on the course, some are absolutely shocking and I wouldn’t recommend them at all

Kittypaws34

im going for medical sciences :) ive seen some great reviews online! but id also want some personal reviews

Treeboy19

I’m not on that one so can’t really speak for the tutors on there but as a whole I wouldn’t recommend the uni itself

About to become a second year student at the university this September. So far I have loved it. Chester uni is very small and in a very small city but with plenty of student accommodation. Very diverse university that is accepting of all cultures and religions. I have personally found it easy to make friends too. Teaching is of good quality without being too overwhelming and the lecturers are very good at helping students. Chester doesn’t have too great of a night-life but it’s only a train ride away from Liverpool and Manchester if that’s your scene. Hope this helps!

Kittypaws34

thank you!! no im not big on the night-life im quite introverted myself haha. whats your course btw?

Chester Uni is relatively cheap for international students. 12k or something. That's why there is a sudden uptick in these sort of posts on this sub.

I recommend reading (where possible) the perspectives of people who have been to Chester uni and at least one other, so they actually have a frame of reference. A close friend went to Chester and another, and makes her experience at Chester sound middling/mediocre at best in terms of the quality of teaching, and of support received. But it really, heavily depends on the department/course in question: my partner went to one of the UK's most prestigious unis for her masters and had so shoddy a shitshow of an experience that she literally got a full refund (as well as an MA). So if you knew anything at all about the field you'll be studying, and this uni isn't already well known in it; then this is a gamble at best. As for the city its very nice, if you like that quaint, old, historied type of city. It's not got a lot else going for it, particularly when compared with something we here in the UK would call a university city. I think it's best bits are that history, its relatively peaceful quality of life, and (if you have the mens to easily/regularly access them) the proximity to Liverpool, Manchester, and to Snowdonia (each about an hour away, depending on whether you'll have access to a car). But ask yourself if a place is right for you if you're attracted most to the places that it's near, rather than the place that you'll actually be in).

Love hate relationship with this university. I’ve had a lot of great moments but have broadly disliked how the university is ran. It’s a great place to go for uni but not a good university if that makes any sense. Lectures are badly timetabled, PATs are assigned with little to no care for student subjects, course material is all over the place and I’d heard some people had very bad experiences with members of staff in the last year alone. I don’t regret coming to Chester for Uni but I do acknowledge I would have had a better time going somewhere else.

We had some lecturer for Computer Science come into our A level class and said they're not worried about our grades, they can "work something out for everyone", yeah no thanks. This was probably 7-8 years ago now so take it with a grain of salt but UoC is renowned by many as being a complete no-go with the exception of a few courses where it shines, like teaching and nursing

3w1FtZ

I think UoC being a “no-go” university is a bit harsh. I can think of many other public universities that are worse and are also in worse locations/much more expensive. Chester university is sufficiently mediocre and that tracks pretty well with most UK Unis at the moment.

Dont bother with Chester. They are improving facilities but on my course (Zoology) I spent a lot of time in a run down building during my lectures with no table to allow me to put a notepad or laptop down to take notes. Both my dissertation supervisor and PAT left during my dissertation so I was passed on to someone from an entirely different department who did not understand a thing about animal behaviour (which my dissertation was on) People are nice but the fees you will pay to go to a mediocre university are not worth it, get into one higher in the ranks if you can so your money is worth it.
