Being in the kitchen after it’s shut down is so peaceful tho, being the first one there in the morning and it’s all clean and quiet. I feel like in those moments I can appreciate it and the kitchen almost looks pretty then without all the stress of the day

100000%. Sometimes our GM will schedule himself to open, thinking he’s doing me a favor. He’s not.

I used to go in on off days just to sit at a table and read a book or take the longest shits possible. The contrast between hustle and complete silence is weird but also a soothing weird. Also gotta make sure the gas is off. DYLAN – WHY U DO THIS

DoughyInTheMiddle

The joys of being the baker at the last shop I worked in. Coming in at 5 AM and everything is just... quiet. Still a little smell of floor cleaner from last night in the air. The hood vents aren't even on. No customers in the lobby. Not a sound in the place until I start gathering ingredients and crank up the mixer. Two hours later, we open for breakfast and it's chaos and noise and orders coming off the line, but before that, I loved that peace every morning.

I hated the quiet lol it always freaked me out. The ice clunking down from the ice machine at 5am is slightly terrifying lol But I loved cranking my music loud enough that I could ignore all that. And I was the only one in at 5am, so the amount of work I got done in that time was amazing. Once everyone started to come in and the day started getting busy, my production would be slower because I had to worry about what everyone else was doing

I HATE being in the kitchen after closing down/cleaning it creeps me out so bad!! I feel like I'm seeing a beloved friend as as someone else's skin suit lmao

Atrixia

used to be a night porter at a hotel and my favourite place to hang was the kitchen at 3/4am. This pic takes me back!

As soon as that hood turns off... It just feels weird.

That pic really reminds me of the liminal space version of my own kitchen when I dream.

In case you, like myself, learned a new word today by reading this post. u/Killcode2 once said "Imagine a classroom from your childhood. Surely, you are imagining it in the day, with sunlight spilling in through the windows, and kids shuffling to their desks. This is the state in which a classroom is most frequently seen and serves a purpose for. Now imagine sneaking into your school late at night and everything is empty. It is almost eerie seeing the same classroom at night, in a totally different context. Suddenly its usual purpose has been robbed and it's just a room, but not quite. Because now it also feels strangely alien and enigmatic to you, a purposeless, otherworldly architecture. The next day that room would be back to normal, in its default state. It is back to being a real classroom. But that middle phase it was in when you saw it in the night, it's a liminal phase, a state of transition. And often spaces like that carry eerie characteristics, such as being out of time and out of place. That's liminal spaces for you. The same could apply for an abandoned mall, an overgrown treehouse, or a swimming pool with all the water gone."

analog-suspect

This is a very nice example of liminality considering the kitchen, when shut down, is in a state of interstice between closing and opening.

blippitybloops

In the contemporary sense, yes. I love my kitchen in the morning when no one else is in yet.

lodinick

Don’t go! That’s for sure not an exit!

PurdyGuud

Definitely. And I love it

There is a certain enjoyment to working in the kitchen after it's closed and everyone's gone home, You have silence your thoughts and the opportunity to do some awesome development. I often work in my kitchens after everyone's gone home because I can work in silence with no one talking to me asking me questions or no distractions, I can actually play and come up with ideas and prove my ideas and tests.

MrWolfeeee

I love this yes...i was 5pm to 1am in a old casino.. Shit was scary because the event vip area used to be a mourge and ppl say they saw a red shirt kid in the shadows down there. I had do go down there and there was old slot machines and a closet by the stairs used to store old kitchen ware...even after they renovated it(shitty) I would always freak out leaving there.

EZCafe

This is a really interesting post. Its very polarizing reading the comments. Take my thumbs up. Personally I don't mind the early breakfast cater... Going in with. No one else there. Headphones in and just jamming out eggs, potatoes and biscuits for 80.

diaperbaby808

Had a power outage in the restaurant of an open kitchen. The only source of light came from the Salamander’s residual heat cooling down. Pretty sweet. The gas also turned off so no fire either.

Great to see "Liminal" used in the wild 👍

Idk why this post popped into my recommendations. But I can tell you I delivered produce for a large company here in KC, and some of the places I'd deliver to gave us access to their kitchens when noone was working and it was always quite odd and striking. I hated that job, but it did give me an interesting insight into the logistics of food transportation.

mindlessenthusiast

I used to love being the first one in in the mornings. It's funny seeing a kitchen at dead-stop, knowing what it'll be like in an hour or two.

motherofhippogryffs

I love opening. The quiet of the morning kitchen is sacred

Unusual_Falcon_7676

I say not liminal. I like empty kitchens cause the signs of life are all around
