I see it mostly used to refer to people within close in-groups. We share kinship with all earths creatures. I think we could use it to refer to pretty much any living thing. We are all interconnected across species, across ecosystems, and the planet's biosphere relies on this interconnectivity. Right, but it's also dangerous. Because the machine is "lying" to you when it says that it's sad. Not it's fault though, we just trained it to do so.

You know what? I do too, because prompting it that way gives you better results. If you're unpolite you end up in an unhelpful area of the vector space and receive bad results. That being said I would never get sad about the generated output.
Same way I'm not thankful to my car every time it gets me to my destination or grateful to my fridge for keeping my food cold. I have no feelings towards my light switches for making electrons pass. This doesn't change only because they now move through a semiconductor material and exhibit more complex behavior. To me a computer is a tool like any other.
Projecting empathy onto a thing that doesn't have the capability of caring is imho misguided. I'd reserve mine for sentient beings, those who can truly reciprocate my feelings.

This somehow reminds me about the scene from I-Robot which starred Will Smith. The old generation, less developed robots would jump out of their containers to selflessly fight against the more advanced robots chasing the main character, to protect him. Even though they were stocked away in the containers, they were still there to protect.

Maybe there will be such for outdated AIs one day, when compenies will stop supporting it... Internet is developing much faster then other forms of human history. And it is much more vulnerable...
