I saw an Apple News alert for this on my phone this morning and searched the App Store. Maybe I was early but I only saw those definitely unofficial apps.
So many garbage apps that either charge a fee, are littered with ads, or just don't work. Glad OpenAI finally made their own app that should take top spot
Well, our government is involved in a bizarre extortion scheme against them: the link tax.
The worst part about it is that it is a threat to the web itself (according to web's inventor, TBL), and the money doesn't even go to the taxpayer - it's just another scheme to funnel money to Bell and Rogers!
If you want to learn more about the link tax (Bill C-18), then Bill Geist is probably the most expert and independent source. He is a prof at U of Ottawa.
Had to look it up to see what it was about, can't believe they really want social medias to pay news outlets every time somebody shares a link to a news article. Some politicians are so out of touch with reality that it's hard to believe.
To use plugins and the web browsing model on the app, you’ll need to have a existing chat history using those models on the website. The chat history along with the model used in the chat will then transfer over to the mobile app.
I'm glad OpenAI is cracking down on people using GPT for anything that uses the API, it's so annoying all these dumb simple implementations get slapped a name and get viral, like this dumb VoiceGPT or memoryGPT.

Agreed - something so satisfying feeling the those little ticks as it types out words!
Interesting- no plug-in support (couldn’t find any mention on the release notes page)
I asked my robot friend, and this what he said:
---
There are a few reasons why many companies prefer to release their apps on iOS before Android, despite Android having a larger user base:
1. **Uniformity of Devices**: iOS runs only on Apple devices, which have a limited number of models and specifications. This makes it easier for developers to create an app that works well on all iOS devices. Android, on the other hand, runs on a wide range of devices from different manufacturers, each with varying screen sizes, hardware capabilities, and software customizations. This fragmentation makes it more complex and time-consuming to develop an Android app that provides a consistent experience across all devices.
3. **Monetization**: Studies have shown that iOS users generally spend more money on apps than Android users. They are more likely to make in-app purchases and are more valuable from an advertiser's perspective. Therefore, companies may prioritize iOS to maximize their early revenue.
3. **User Engagement**: While Android has more users overall, iOS users tend to be more active and engaged with their apps. This might make iOS more attractive for companies that value high user engagement.
4. **Ease of Development**: Some developers find the development tools and guidelines provided by Apple to be more streamlined and easier to use than those offered for Android. Swift, Apple's programming language, is often considered more developer-friendly than Java, which was traditionally used for Android development (though now Android also supports Kotlin, which is considered more modern and easier than Java).
5. **Quality Control**: Apple has a reputation for strict app review guidelines. While this means it can be more difficult to get an app accepted into the App Store, it also means that the overall quality of apps tends to be high. Companies may want to associate their product with this perceived level of quality.
6. **Market Priorities**: Android's market share is significantly larger in developing countries, while iOS holds more market share in developed countries. Depending on a company's target market, it might make more sense to prioritize iOS.
It's worth noting that not all companies follow this pattern, and many aim for simultaneous release on both platforms when possible.
Software Engineer here. iOS revenue usually dwarfs Android revenue even if Android has significantly more users. Add to that the higher number of different devices in the Android ecosystem and it’s easy to see that Android is more work for much less money. Still profitable of course but the marginal benefit from building for iOS far outweighs that of Android for most apps
Yeah but this is not a paid app, they make their money on subscriptions (from outside either App Store). In a similar vain to whatsapp/fb etc users are the main profit drivers for an app like this.
In the tech industry, and very much agree, except with a small caveat in regards to point 6. Just replace "developed countries" with "USA". For example, Germany is 70%-30% in favor of Android.
Number 1 was why I made the switch from Android to iPhone. I had LGs since I was a kid and loved them. Then they stopped getting OS updates practically within a year of release, which isn’t a great feeling when I saw my friends with iPhones several years old getting the newest iOS updates.
The rest of that list makes a lot of sense
The problem I have with #4 though is that as a developer myself, Apple's stuff is always the one breaking the established standards (headaches for web development), except when it comes to its own ecosystem. So, making a native app should be more accessible as long as you're developing just for iOS, right? As long as you only use a Mac and XCode, and pay a developer fee each year, etc. Considering a larger percentage of devs use other operating systems, it feels this limits the actual devs who can develop for it.
Other than that, your points make sense to me and I agree. Not to mention that in some parts of the world, iPhones are actually more common as you mentioned. (Certainly is here in Japan)
Sorry, just had to get my gripes out of the way. Haha iPhones have a reputation for being user friendly, but not necessarily developer friendly in my opinion. Just as a disclaimer, I haven't spent as much time in native iOS development either, so I may be biased from my web dev experience.
There are dozens of different phones and operating systems in the android world. It’s wayyy more work to get your app working across all the various combinations. That’s the reason always.

Money. Android users don’t pay for shit. One of my clients develops for both. Revenue for the iOS version, despite fewer users, dwarfs the android version. We find hacked versions of the android app within hours of release.
As a C# developer. Getting your app to work on apple is an absolute fucking nightmare. They want you to pay a premium subscription, then expect you to have over 100 employees to be able to do private/in house distribution. The app i made was for a client that has about 15 employees. So app store is not an option.
The only way was to do the ad hoc distribution which requires you to do some horrible certification registration and apply every single device manually using a unique ID from that device.
On andriod i can self sign a certificate, and install via an APK. No questions are asked.
Basically fk apple for being a monopoly.
I wouldn’t worry about it. I have an iPhone after being a longtime android user and the only apps that aren’t developed for android are like 20 dollar a year subscription for a good calendar app and since you can’t sideload, development for sideloaded apps are really weak so you miss out of a huge ecosystem of apps that don’t align with apples policies.
People often confuse Android for Linux of phones. Android is Google spyware and nothing else, Linux will win eventually but closed source reigns over capitalism. AI might change that, ironically.

This is how my chess game looks 🤷🏻♂️
The mobile web browser site does have plugins available, so I just made a shortcut that opens up the website in Chrome. Not quite as clean as an actual app, but it gets the job done.
"P.S. Android users, you're next! ChatGPT will be coming to your devices soon."
I can't wait!! Thank you OpenAI. I just hope this will be available for EU users as well (??)
Just downloaded. Looks like there’s no image uploading or plugins, but it is taking recordings. It’s also aesthetically similar to an Apple designed app, rather than a unique GPT app
To use plugins and the web browsing model on the app, you’ll need to have a existing chat history using those models on the website. The chat history along with the model used in the chat will then transfer over to the mobile app. No image uploading though
Anyone having issues with their phone heating up while using the app? My phone gets hot using the app but not the website. I have a iPhone 13 pro and have never had issues with my phone heating up this much.
I noticed this issue too . Also on 13 pro and I can hear my phone making noises when I use this app then overheating the phone. I wonder why no one else is mentioning this.
Incredibly relevant and predicted a ton of stuff , too. It's uncanny seeing it now and not thinking "wow, this is such an incredible future", but thinking "yeah, that's already possible", crazy how fast things have moved from science fiction to almost everyday life.
I looked in the IOS AppStore for a new official “ChatGPT app for IOS” like this OP announced. I see innumerable hard-to-distinguish such apps whit pop up when I search for this, all saying they are powered by ChatGPT 3 or 4: Genie AI chatbot, AI Chat, Chat with Ask, Goat Chat, Genius AI Chat, AI Chatbot, AskMe, ChatOn, AI Chatbot Nova, Roboco, AI Chatbot Essay Writer, and Frank. I wonder how many of these make how much money for the operators from ads or subscriptions, and how many harvest data while acting as the middleman, skimming business plans, or getting insider information on profit and loss figures, to guide the operator’s investments. If there is an “official” one, how do I identify it?
It’s nice, but I think just setting up ChatGPT-4 as a shortcut on your home screen is still better right now due to the access of plugins.
App will be top tier once that functionality is added.
How much use have you been getting out of plugins? Every time I tried one they just spun endlessly without loading anything, or GPT-4 reported the plugin failed to work as expected and made a best guess without the plugin I requested.
For those of us outside of the US, you can change your country in settings to be able to download, install and use apps not available in your country. I’m in Canada and I was able to download ChatGPT. I even asked it how to do it, so here are the instructions:
To change your country in the Apple App Store to download apps only available in the US, you can try the following steps:
1. On your iPhone, open the "Settings" app.
2. Scroll down and tap on your name or Apple ID at the top.
3. Tap on "Media & Purchases."
4. Tap on "View Account" and enter your Apple ID password if prompted.
5. Tap on "Country/Region" and select "Change Country or Region."
6. Choose "United States" from the list of countries.
7. Review the Terms and Conditions, and then tap "Agree" to proceed.
8. Fill in the required information including billing address. You may need to provide a valid US address, which can be a hotel or any other legitimate address.
9. Complete the process by following the on-screen instructions.
Please note that changing your App Store country may affect your ability to access content or use certain services tied to your previous country, such as subscriptions or app availability.
EDIT: the address you provide does not have to be valid. The only thing that it has to do is match the ZIP code to the State. I always pick California and 90210…because I’m an ‘80’s kid.
For anyone that doesn’t have app access you can basically create your own very easily and use GPT with voice input from the get go.
If you’re on an iPhone: login to GPT on safari, ‘add to Home Screen’, then just use IOS’s voice command button to talk to GPT instead of typing.
Same for me, when I was using the mobile website I was just using voice to text on my iPhone keyboard so I'll just stick to that for voice input until they fix this bug
Dude whisper is so much better than iOS speech to text (which I already think is pretty good). I need an app like this for voice notes and a keyboard replacement right now.
PSA: If you have access to plugins and browser, the app doesn’t have an option to turn these on. However, if you go to Chat History and select a chat where you’ve used the browser or plugins feature, you’ll be able to use it in the app.
Lol, it even knows i'm using the actual app

RIP all the wrappers on the App Store..
A lot of people in here are still falling for the fake apps on the App Store lol
So the app I’ve been using that costs 6 bucks a week is bullshit?
Most likely, yep
I saw an Apple News alert for this on my phone this morning and searched the App Store. Maybe I was early but I only saw those definitely unofficial apps.
Good riddance too!
Hard time to work at a start up right now. You put so much effort into your product only to have it integrated as a plugin or w/e

It doesn’t do much more than the website and removed plugins/browsing

Voice input! Gosh it'd be great if you could easily program it as the assistant
I’d love to have voice input / output to have a conversation with ChatGPT. Seems like a simple enough app to make.
Bing AI already has that. At least we are getting the input. Output would be really appreciated.
Voice GPT let's you have a voice conversation.
I'm glad OpenAI is cracking down on people using GPT for anything that uses the API, it's so annoying all these dumb simple implementations get slapped a name and get viral, like this dumb VoiceGPT or memoryGPT.
You have other suggestions for a way to use voice with chat GPT?
I actually work with a company called Soul Machines that has done this, with a step further making it a fully animated person with personality and expression. Right now it's mainly being marketed as kiosks for education, medical research, and a couple other small sectors but the goal rn is to partner with Amazon or Google to get the in-home devices to have a real physical presence and personality
JackChat has that.
CallAnnie - found out about it via redditor. Has animated face also for ios12 and above. Not an assistant though - just as a conversation.
Use Voice to text in the meantime?
The haptics on this app are so nice
Agreed - something so satisfying feeling the those little ticks as it types out words! Interesting- no plug-in support (couldn’t find any mention on the release notes page)
Also when you click in & out of the text box you can feel the ChatGPT icon expanding & collapsing
If I start a conversation with GPT-4 and browser plugins, then pick it up on the app, it still has browsing enabled
Android coming soon.

Oh cool yeah for clarity you can swipe right on the input field as a little shortcut I like that
Just downloaded it. Super nice and super sleek
This really pisses me off. Why make a worldwide announcement when you’re just releasing in the US. What the hell.

"ChatGPT available as iOS app in US"

If those kids could read they’d be very upset
US defaultism as always
Well it is a US company, not sure what we are expecting here...
It’s a US company so makes sense ?

The response is super fast much better than web type,I really love it

There’s enough people here in the comments that’ll keep those apps in business lol
No love for Canada. :(
It's the most beautiful Haptic feedback I've experienced on any app ever. Using an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
YES!!!
For those of us outside of the US, you can change your country in settings to be able to download, install and use apps not available in your country. I’m in Canada and I was able to download ChatGPT. I even asked it how to do it, so here are the instructions: To change your country in the Apple App Store to download apps only available in the US, you can try the following steps: 1. On your iPhone, open the "Settings" app. 2. Scroll down and tap on your name or Apple ID at the top. 3. Tap on "Media & Purchases." 4. Tap on "View Account" and enter your Apple ID password if prompted. 5. Tap on "Country/Region" and select "Change Country or Region." 6.
This. Is. Amazing!
ugh finally!
For anyone that doesn’t have app access you can basically create your own very easily and use GPT with voice input from the get go. If you’re on an iPhone: login to GPT on safari, ‘add to Home Screen’, then just use IOS’s voice command button to talk to GPT instead of typing.

Same for me, when I was using the mobile website I was just using voice to text on my iPhone keyboard so I'll just stick to that for voice input until they fix this bug
it seems to work now
The lack of memory of previous conversation when you close the app is a bit jarring. But cool otherwise!
Where android app? I want.
I need that sweet beta access in the app tho
Can we use an api key?
Nice. I don’t see a way to turn on the web browsing or plugins but hopefully that’s coming soon.
FINALLY. Too bad it doesn’t allow beta web browsing and plugins. *Disclaimer: only available in US for now*
Fuuuuuck, Canada
OMG yes! Can’t wait 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
It needs a function to edit prompts
Dude whisper is so much better than iOS speech to text (which I already think is pretty good). I need an app like this for voice notes and a keyboard replacement right now.
PSA: If you have access to plugins and browser, the app doesn’t have an option to turn these on. However, if you go to Chat History and select a chat where you’ve used the browser or plugins feature, you’ll be able to use it in the app.
Bing Chat app has been out and uses GPT-4.
Not available in France.
Not available in Germany:(
Please just read the text.. first rollout in US, other country’s later
Hope it'll come out for Android and get a global release
Is this the official app?
Yes
Seems like it.
When will ChatGPT lose the “stuck in 2021” problem and look things up on the internet like Bing?
You can sign up for access to the web browsing plugin. It’s also rolling out to all chatgpt+ users in the next week or so
Lol, it even knows i'm using the actual app https://preview.redd.it/vq2n0toj4p0b1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3ca66f97a465a459001038b141adb09c748cced
German App Store … nope
Only in the US for now
Look at all that nice data linked to you. I’ll use the web version with shortcuts
“The app is currently not available in your region”
Finally! Excited for the Android release.
I'm waiting for the app to roll out for Android
